PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

The other thing about checking up on that pom-pom is that if shit starts happening, we won't be able to attack the enemy ship with the pom-pom. More than likely, Akitsukuni men will be on that boat, and friendly fire will need to be avoided. The Type 11 will be more precise and minimize friendly fire. Once all friendlies are clear, we can shell them with the pom-pom.

@open_sketchbook does everyone on the 103 have a rifle?

@Artificial Girl @open_sketchbook

From what little Haruna has picked up, does Sugiyama seem to be in with our cousin/a fascist?

It might influence how he acts against the gunrunner?

It's hard to say because mostly you've exchanged pleasantries or "hey I need a plaster for this cut on my finger." He does wear the armband, though.

I have a big important question for @Artificial Girl and @open_sketchbook

Is Sugiyama a human, or was he ACTUALLY made in a naval shipyard?

He's probably human as far as you can tell.

Probably.

It's not Haruna's job load the boat, it's her job to command it. If things go bad enough that she needs a personal weapon, there will surely be some that have been made available.

The Type 11 is a Not!Maxim, right? The amount of belts Haruna could bring won't make much difference, and there should already be plenty onboard the boat. If more than a couple belts are needed, the Pom-Pom is what really matters anyway. A bucket is pointless, because the way water-cooled guns are set up already includes one. There is a hose to take steam from the water jacket to a metal can with some water in it. Steam emerges from the hose at the bottom of the water and condenses back into water. When the water in the water jacket runs low, the water in the can is poured into the jacket. Little water should be lost over this cycle.

The same essentially goes for the Pom-Pom as well. Pom-Poms are simply enlarged Maxims. Maxim guns are incredibly reliable weapons. The guns have their own crews anyway, and if they're not doing their jobs to the degree that the guns are inoperable (which isn't impossible given that crane accident) an inspection now won't be able to fix that. It would take a lot of neglect to put them out of action anyway.

Now, coordinating signals is crucial because communications are hard. It's also, like, actually Haruna's job right now to coordinate with the other boat.

Haruna herself is currently not in good shape, mentally. This could well end up being a rather chaotic and panicky situation. Haruna is very much not in the right frame of mind for battlefield command right now, and this is basically the option to try to address that. Her freezing up or panicking at a critical moment is probably the worst thing that can happen short of the boat getting blown up. I'd rather risk the guns failing than that. If the other boat and the boarding party get driven off, that means it's probably time to just sink the damn ship anyway and that's what the torpedoes are for.

(You're obviously not going to carry things yourself, you're going to order your underlings to do it in the last seconds before the boat hits the water. Just FYI.)

The pom-pom btw is just a little QF 1-pounder pom-pom knock off. It's not really gonna do much to a serious naval vessel unless its another motor torpedo boat or an unarmored civilian vessel like the junks or sampans or other small vessels that you encounter running guns and doing other illegal things in the area around Cathay or Joseon.

Also yes, the Type 11 is the not!Maxim.

I wouldn't say the goal is to sink anything though re: PomPoms and weapons generally. If you're on overwatch (which is what 103 is doing), your role is to provide fire support in the event that shit epically hits the fan, as well as spot danger coming before it starts and either act menacing to scare them off or open fire to try and prevent friendlies from taking casualties.

You were actually grateful now, for the armed guard at your door. His name was Seaman First Class Shiraki and you eventually surmised he was picked for the position because he had zero interest in women, men, or anything but yelling at people and eating navy food. You caught him reading a manual on a signalling light once for pleasure. Somehow you got the feeling this man had been assembled in a naval yard, the same as the ship you rode in.

And with that, the portion of the internet Ace community that cares about such things gets in a giant slapfight about whether to be happy about representation or unhappy about negative stereotypes or somehow both at the same time.

If they've already killed, they'll just kill again. Grab some more ammo. You can never have too much ammo, or at least you have too much ammo when the boat starts to sink but anything before that is good.
