PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

Not a chance. The only one of these which you would be in charge of is you might get to be in charge of one of the little boats on the torpedo boat tender.
Getting our own torpedo boat would be cool!

Anyone else get the distinct impression someone's trying to murder us with this.
Yes.

[X] IAN Hachinosu, a motor torpedo boat tender: This larger vessel carries four lean little motor torpedo boats on joists that can be lowered into the water to scout or attack enemy capital ships. She's the only ship of her class and is officially considered 'experimental' by the Naval High Command, but at least she's a combat ship. Sort of.

This ship is incrementally less likely to kill us than the other ones, plus the prospect of getting our own torpedo boat and doing something impressive.

Patrol Torpedo boats are wooden ships crewed by iron men.

As much as I'd like to vote for the kamikaze bote in the name of anti-martian preparedness, this is both the least death-trappy and the most likely to let us stand out and get ourselves a command.

Seems like the best alternative, that's least likely to get us killed while still providing great opportunities to prove our self's.

[X] I-108, a submarine cruiser: One of two of its type, this vessel is a submersible with two eight-inch guns, allowing for stealthy shore bombardments or extended ambushes of enemy shipping. It also has a rotating torpedo tube that can be lowered out of the bottom of the boat to fire in ANY direction. Whoever designed this thing is brilliant, because the Naval High Command definitely gave them a lot of money.

Das Boot!

[ ] IAN Raimeiko, a torpedo ram: Fresh off the yard and ready for a shakedown cruise, this is the newest vessel in a class of ship that the Admiralty is certain will be useful against any enemy attacks against the homeland. Or it can attack the enemy in port. And it RAMS! Awesome. Not only can it fire regular torpedoes from it's 4 tubes facing port and starboard, but the ram is designed to explode inside the enemy vessel. This ship has a lot of fighting spirit and will probably kill everyone on board.

I'm enjoying the story a lot! Few characters have established themselves as reoccurring, but the ones that have received strong characterizations and fin scenes. Curious how the transition between ships is going to go, if we get another friend

Technically a combat posting and not a horrendous deathtrap. Also corgis

Now, I'm not opposed to the not!Surcouf, I just think that a torpedo boat is a ... "safe" although that's probably the wrong word, first command.

Safe is boring. We're still a year out from the start if the war. The three other options can be counted on to have a crisis within that timeframe. The torpedo boat tender will just sit around tendering.

Well, it'll sit around tendering PT boats in a somewhat similar way to the way a carrier sits around tendering fighter planes.

Rule of cool, fellows, rule of cool. (Now I just need to read up some on what this actually is :p )

Also, such a torpedo boat tender could be easily retrofitted into aircraft carrier, no?
For a given value of "aircraft carrier" - no flat decks or catapults, or most other stuff. Just planes in place of boats.

That... is a good point, even though planes on botes are so far faar away. But still, we might get stuck here longer (or they might keep throwing around the girl...)

And I am totally looking forward to the further interactions between Haruna and Aiko, awkward as they will most likely be

I love the character interactions: they go from totally adorable and cute to satisfyingly infuriating (the prejudiced captain of the destroyer tender).

The alternatives all look like career or life ending traps, which is fun!
I think we should also consider our subpar technical skills (8), which might be a problem if, say, we are put in charge of the rotating torpedo tubes of doom.
Also, the big money invested in the submarine will not help our career when we arr scapegoated for some accident which will inevitably happen there.

The torpedo ram might be a good posting in peacetime, but a bit suicidal once war starts...
