PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

If we're planning on doing wider ranging patrols later on in our deployment, wouldn't we want to start with the quartermaster (synergy with drumming up funds) and then do our XO when we go on those patrols?

No, because getting to know our XO first makes it possible to send him off on patrols both short and long without our presence.

We do want to get to know the quartermaster and Maeda, but they are frankly less important to us in the immediate. Our XO can handle our quartermaster if he has to, but we have to handle the XO, and Maeda is strictly speaking not in our chain of command, he's a shore facility officer, not a shipboard officer, and theoretically and according to custom our superior. Not that he's acting it.

Shouldn't Lieutenant Maeda be in overall command because his commission is dated before ours? Certainly in the RN, which the IJN was based on and which the IAN is further based on, the Navy List was the ultimate arbiter of who commanded and if your commission came through the day after someone else's then you were subordinate to them forever unless you got your next promotion before them. Which you very seldom did. Haruna has been skip-hopping her way up the ranks so she's been less bothered by this than most, but Maeda has been the commander here for long enough to introduce everyone and therefore should have gotten his promotion before Haruna did.

He's not an Imperial Princess as well as a lieutenant. There's some cultural conditioning here that inhibits him from directly assuming command. If Haruna wants to she can order him to take up command according to tradition and damn her social position, but he won't do so naturally unless things have gone vastly pear shaped.

Technically, they're two separate commands with no shared command structure. :3
Also, while Haruna is the junior officer here, she did just roll up on the town with the Akitsukuni equivalent of the Navy Cross, a Purple Heart, and a Lifesaving Medal, and having fought in the two largest actions of the war so far. That tends to get people making room.

Haruna has spent her career so far yearning for respect. Well now, she'll get all the respect she can handle.

I'd say it's more like the Navy and Marine Corps Medal than the lifesaving medal. What Sketch said tho.

[x] Take the boat on some wider ranging patrols than usual. (Will make everything else harder)

[X] See what funds you can drum up to pay to distract them. (Subterfuge roll)

[X] You need to take some time to talk to this girl and find out what she wants. (+1 Stress)

[X] You can take an afternoon out of your schedule to Be Royal for a while.

[X] You gotta keep an eye on that one. Just in case. (Subterfuge roll.)

[X] Get to know Ensign Ishinari, your second-in-command.

Oh, snap! Silphium didn't go extinct in this universe. (Silphium was an IRL plant that supposedly worked as both a contraceptive and abortifacient. Records claim it went extinct in the 1st century CE.)

This quest always has such interesting choices
[X]Plan Readiness and Relations.

Investigating Nashimoto might be self-fulfilling prophecy, but Haruna is good as subterfuge and there's too high a likelihood of him wanting to avenge his brother. If he seems decent, we can befriend him.

Gah! I want to get to know all the options, but the second-in-command probably takes priority as I think he'd be most likely to lead a coup. Lieutenant Maeda (the other most senior officer) should be the next person we get to know, as he's the other most likely coup-leader. Then I'd suggest the radio operators because I want to make sure there are no 'miscommunications'.

[X]Plan Readiness and Relations.

Yeah, trust is nice but knowing is nicer and Haruna is good at Subterfuge. I'm willing to roll those dice. Also @Hazard if you want the tally to process this vote properly you need to indent the subpoints like so:

[] Plan Name
-[] Subpoint
-[] Subpoint
-[] Subpoint

This probably isn't strictly necessary, since the tally links to the post in which you made the plan, but it'll make things easier to keep track of.

Yup! If memory serves, that's a big part of the setting's explanation for Europa's more egalitarian situation re: gender roles.

[X]Plan Readiness and Relations.

Yeah, it might be a self-fulfilling prophecy but this station is going to be outright boring without a mutinous conspiracy or something. If we know what it is then that's great. If we happen to start it then that's fine.

Well, one success, and one partial-failure/success. Did we actually vote to make extra-special enemies with a relative or not? I admit I was overwhelmed with all the choices and therefore didn't vote.

The winning plan:

[X]Plan Readiness and Relations.
-[X] Cross-Train the crew hard. Ride them on it until everyone can do everything. (+1 Stress)
-[X] See what funds you can drum up to pay to distract them. (Subterfuge roll)
-[X] You need to take some time to talk to this girl and find out what she wants. (+1 Stress)
-[X] You can take an afternoon out of your schedule to Be Royal for a while.
-[X] You gotta keep an eye on that one. Just in case. (Subterfuge roll.)
-[X] Get to know Ensign Ishinari, your second-in-command.

Finally (re)caught up! Love the story a ton, lost it for a while, now I have un-lost it. Praise the Chrysanthemum Throne!

Edit: Also, subby tied-up Haruna is best Haruna. Just read that little side-story.

Every time I'm super nervous about writing smutty bits so its always really reassuring when people say they like it. :3
