PLEASE READ THE QUEST RULES BELOW

You collectively vote on the actions of Arisukawa Haruna, the first woman to serve openly in the Imperial Akitsukuni Navy.

This quest is set in a universe which is much like our own circa 1910, but with different politics, cultural norms, and ideas about gender and sexuality, as well as some unusual and advanced technology in places.

We are using this quest to explore themes like breaking the glass ceiling, divergent outlooks on gender and sexuality, colonialism and imperialism, and the place of royalty.

Content Warning
This quest goes some dark places.

There is violence, often explicit, often unfair, often against undeserving targets.

There are not always good options forward. The protagonist is not necessarily a good person.

There is implied content and discussion of sexual harassment and assault.

This is a world where people are often racist, sexist, queerphobic bigots. Sometimes, even the PC and the people they are friends with.

Voting Rules

We will tell you if write-in votes are allowed. If we do not say that write-ins are allowed, they are not. This is to prevent people from unrealistically hedging their bets.

You may proposal other options in a non-vote format, subject to approval, on non write-in votes.

We will tell you when a vote allows approved voting. If we don't say the answer is no, pick an option. We like making people commit.

Discussions makes the GM feel fuzzy.

Game Rules
When we ask you for a roll, roll 3d6. You are aiming to roll equal or under the value of your stat. If you succeed, Haruna gets through the situation with no real difficulties. If you roll above the target value, Haruna will still succeed, but this success will cost her something or add a complication.

Whenever Haruna loses something or faces hardship from a botched roll, she takes Stress. The more Stress Haruna has, the more the job and the circumstances she's in will get to her, and it'll be reflected in the narrative. Haruna must be kept under 10 Stress: if she reaches 10 Stress, she will suffer a breakdown and the results will not be great for her.

Haruna loses stress by taking time for herself, by making meaningful progress on her dreams, and by kissing tall, beautiful women.

Meta Rules
Author commentary is in italics so you know it's not story stuff.

Please don't complain about the system or the fact we have to roll dice. We've heard it before, we've heard it a thousand times across multiple quests. We're not going to change it, and it wears at our fucking souls.

Just going "oh noooo" or "Fish RNGesus Why!" is fun and fine. Complaining at length because you didn't get what you want less so.

If you have a question, tag both @open_sketchbook and @Artificial Girl. If you only tag one of us, you will be ignored. Seriously, we both write this quest.

And yes this is an alt-history type setting with openly gay and trans people, ahistoric medicine, and weird politics. Just... deal, please?

This quest employs a special system called Snippet Votes. Please read this post for more information.

A lot of these suggestions seem funny, but not particularly wise. Here's for a better bit.

[] Haruna has an earnest discussion with the nurse. The reality of the war, what war neurosis is, how the doctor treats his subordinates, and so on...

[] Haruna gives conflicting information to each doctor to get them to argue among themselves about what's wrong with her.

This is petty and juvenile and I absolutely love it. Not to mention it's absolutely in line with some of the dumb shenanigans soldiers can get up to, especially when bored.

[X] Diplomacy

I'm not completely certain why you're telling us this but...

[ ] In view of her bad experience with the ridiculous not-Webley, Haruna considers whether a rugged automatic pistol with a proper magazine could be made for shipborne use.

:V

It's 1911 in Asia, not 1911 in Not-America.

[ ] Haruna receives some kind of medal for rallying her mixed Army/Navy unit together and holding Hill 191 against the Caspian counterattack when most other units broke and routed that day.

[ ] Haruna will not spend her entire treatment in bed. She will be as physically active as she can get away with.

[ ] Haruna asks the nurses for well, basically all the privileges of 2 weeks leave.

[ ] Haruna helps Min-Seo get comfortable in her role as a maid (making clear what will and will not be asked of her)

[ ] Haruna talks to Min-Seo about Min-Seo's past and what she wants for the future.

[ ] Haruna dusts off her courtly manners and acts like a respectable (and stable) Akitsukuni noble lady.

[ ] Go back over the battle and learn from it. If they're going to lock her up and make her talk about her experiences then she might as well get something useful out of it.

[ ] Haruna meets other patients in the ward. Some of them seem as okay as she is... but some don't.

[ ] Haruna tries to figure out if she can get that Army captain a posthumous medal or otherwise see him honored. She'd probably be dead without him rallying the infantry and he likely has family who would care.

[ ] News filters back to the hospital about what's going on at the front.

[ ] Haruna requests that she be able to visit any of her men who were sent to this hospital for their injuries.

[ ] Haruna is in the garden one day when she sees a cat running around and, while trying to coax the cat into letting itself be pet, is reminded of the cat on the Okinami, and reminisces about her previous postings and how they've changed her.

[] Haruna has an earnest discussion with the nurse. The reality of the war, what war neurosis is, how the doctor treats his subordinates, and so on...

[ ] Honesty work with the doctors about her experience, stress and sexism

[ ] Write to Akio about the situation.

Basically, voting for All The Things.

Does the color coding mean anything in particular?

I like this one, seems fitting.

CAT.

Okay, this one I think is very important. If the conclusions Haruna just reached about what's going on with Min-Seo just stay in her head, there will be who knows how much future trouble springing from this dynamic. Best to get it out in the open here and now while it is relatively safe to do so, and figure out together what ought to be done to get Min-Seo through the war safely with as little stress and as much dignity as possible. She shouldn't have to constantly worry about how to maintain Haruna's favor for protection, and certainly shouldn't feel compelled to do something she doesn't want to because of it.

[ ] Haruna has a long open and honest conversation with Min-Seo about the situation they find themselves in and what led to it. Haruna explains that she's been looking out for her because it's the right thing to do, not because she expects something in return, and maybe elaborates on some of the important realizations that led to her current less awful than usual views, and they talk over what to do next to best secure Min-Seo's well-being for the duration of the war with that in mind.

And, a few from other people that I like.

[ ] Get a speedloader, and maybe a new revolver with less kick.
[ ] Write to Akio about the situation.

[ ] Honesty work with the doctors about her experience, stress and sexism

This is important:
Provides a template of how can doctors work with women in the conflict in the future instead of half assing it so they can have a better understanding in how to help women with war neurosis since its sort of different compare to men.
Might as well make the most of it though I do felt a sense of irritation.

One new vote, the rest doubling up on other people's suggestions.

[ ] Restless and frustrated, Haruna finds herself among a circle of similarly imprisoned junior Army officers. One man, from the country gentry, has found a particular interest in the nature of Joseon mud and its differences from his familiar native soil. Eventually, commiseration about mud and water turns to a discussion on the relative merits of each others' footwear. Army vs. Navy, Official Issue vs. civilian-market, high-leg vs. ankle boot, and more.

Finally got around to my reread of this thats been on the backburner, and while i've got a bunch of saved up quotes from this and Aircraft quest to make some megaposts out of, couple things i noticed:
1. Haruna lived because she had a fancy officer helmet on. Said helmets (and the regular infantry helmets at that) are super limited, so she had it because the small navy presence got relative priority even while army units near the front lost out. The army commander that helped us make our stand...died because he was shot in the head while wearing a 'soft cap'... thats certainly gonna fuck up Haruna when she realizes it D=
2.
You wondered if she had even taken any brass, or if that was simply a fabrication. Either seemed possible. You were going to have to talk to her later, and that was going to be complicated, but one thing at a time.
Didn't see in my skimming of non-story posts a snippet for this, so...

[] Haruna, during one last checkup on her physical head injury makes the connection that the army commander that helped her died from basically the same thing...only he wasn't lucky enough to have a helmet, while she did. Maybe she tries to write back to family with connections/use some of her family funds to push greater helmet production?
[] Haruna, among the many other conversations she and Min-Seo need to have, idly asks whether she'd actually taken any brass. Min-Seo assuming this is leading to a punishment can be a jumping off point for a discussion on how she won't be punished like that
[] Haruna is in the garden one day when she sees a cat running around and, while trying to coax the cat into letting itself be pet, is reminded of the cat on the Okinami, and reminisces about her previous postings and how they've changed her
