But the existence of the "you" that you believe in is so tenuous - Shin Megami Tensei/Persona General

Not quite.

Shadows and Persona are opposite sides of the same coin. A specific person's Shadow is all of their bottled up emotions, all the pieces of a person that they reject or hide away.

The Persona is a representation of self actualization, an idealized representation of the self through a lens of Campbellian archetypes. It is born of Shadow, but is different.

Canon said:
Metis: What are you talking about? Don't tell me you've been fighting them
this whole time without knowing... Personas and Shadows are the same
thing. That's why you're able to fight them in the first place. Did
you all think that Shadows were mysterious invaders or something?
Shadows are the lower parts of the psyche everyone has... Suppressed
human thoughts given physical form. When people are unable to face
their darker selves, they break loose, free from all control. But
sometimes, humans with special awareness can tame their Shadows...
Those are Persona-users.

Junpei: So Personas and Shadows... They're the same thing, just different
names?

No, it really doesn't. It doesn't, at all. Persona 4 ALSO called Personas the suppressed Shadow (thanks, Naoto), and the way the Japanese language works, 'birth' can be applied to transformations. Now if you have a specific quote to give more useful context, but considering the entire theme of Persona 4 that doesn't seem likely.

Naoto said:
"A shadow is suppressed power, and when controlled by one's ego, it becomes a Persona... "

The director from Production IG suggested it would look cool.

There's also an interesting message (if you want to interpret it that way) that they're skating on thin ice with society because they're also thieves.

But I like the quoted explanation more. Anzu (the girl) looks like she's slipping, Ryuji (blonde guy) is kind of going in circles...

And the MC is just full bore 'I don't give a fuck' Jojo-ish, stylin' skating. Add the music in, and you've got one hell of an initial trailer.

Now if only I can get a PS4...

Wrong timeline, unfortunately. Persona-verse broke off thanks to the antics of Raidou Kuzunoha... I think.

IIRC the persona/Devil Summoner timeline splits off of 'SMT If...' actually, all the different timelines I think split off from that game (4 completely different story paths and endings leading to various things like allowing Raidou to stop the nuke, which is the persona/devil summoner timeline, or not, or something completely different)

Also funny enough for persona canon the main character from 'SMT If...' is a girl named Tamaki Uchida who works at the PI firm in P2: Innocent Sin/Eternal Punishment who helps you spread rumors and acts as a masked vigilante.

A lot of people doing symbolic analysis on the trailer have suggested that Morgana might represent Mercy/Virtue/True Innocence in contrast to everyone else's Seven Deadly Sins/Guilt stuff.

There's that, but the trailer does display her name with the subtitle "Luxuria Persona", so maybe not.

I should have been clearer; I was thinking more of how a cat manages to acquire human-equivalent powers of reason etc.

And don't forget her natty costume!

Well, Koromaru sets a precedent, so if she awakened to a Persona via the P5 method, it would have to give her a Phantom Thief costume as a matter of course.

the protagonist manifests his costume by supernaturally lighting himself on fire, so it's probably a henshin thing.

Because Persona has never taken the less anime-esque option.

So I looked through an analysis of a fan translation of the trailer, and the menu suggested that P5 would do away with the Social Links.

Why do you hate fun and good feelings ATLUS? Why?

:p

Weeeeeell... It's highly probable ATLUS hates humanity, and you in particular.

I mean, have you ever tried to go for the Neutral (canon) ending for SMT1?

I don't know, I liked the Social Links, but they were barely important to the plot if they weren't party members, and some were a slog to get through.

Moreover, because people weren't guaranteed to finish or do certain social links, including ones with party members, any character development gained through Social Links did not show up in the main story.

I'd like it if Social Links, or whatever equivalent there is in P5, actually affected the plot. For example, not ranking a certain characters link to a certain would have them make a different action that affected the plot, kinda like how maxing Shinjiro's link in P3P would let him survive.

That would be pretty cool. Would also probably involve taking into account other people's social links regarding how they'd respond to the different actions. And people's reactions to those reactions. That would be a lot of work, especially since a lot of people wouldn't see quite a few of the possibilities (mostly the really low SL for most of your party ones).

Yet I'd want that so bad.

But considering the Cooperation thing they look like they're using, there might be smaller heists with you and the other person that open up the stuff that social links did in the other two. And I can't be mad about that.

The Japanese games call social links "Community" or "Commu" for short, there is a tab called Cooperation. I highly, highly doubt they are going to drop one of the things that made the persona series from a side spin off to a flagship title.
