You focused on keeping up with your self defense training with Giles and Buffy. You wanted to be reliable when you followed after her in the fights, and to be able to protect Amy and Willow when you stayed behind. You still felt a thrill when you sparred with Buffy directly, even if it was matched by the regret that you would never be able to really match her.
On the other hand, Giles and Ms Calendar were starting to draw closer to each other. You didn't know if you wanted to cheer Giles on or be grossed out by the two adults you liked best being gooey with each other. Buffy certainly seemed to be supportive of it, and Amy wanted her mentor to be happy. You decided as long as it wasn't in your face you'd leave the girls to cover whatever support they'd want to give.
Of course it wasn't long after that Buffy came back from a routine patrol with Angel in tow to inform everyone that someone had gone grave robbing. Which was definitely new and different from the corpses walking out on their own. It had been a dead girl from school as well. Someone wanted their corpse nice and young. Willow and Giles instantly headed into research mode, while you quietly backed out. You'd be there when there was action going on, but research was not your friend. Besides, the science fair was mandatory participation this year, and you needed to come up with a project. Cordelia came in looking to grab Willow's help to slap together something for a passing grade for minimum effort in the fair.

I'm guessing that joint projects are allowed? In that case, I think Xander would do better working with someone else than working alone. We can't really choose any of the other girls after Buffy's dance, or we might make Amy even more insecure. Also, Willow is already being badgered by Cordelia so I don't want to put more on her plate.

I'm entirely on board with working with Amy. Largely because she'd be very deadpan and unimpressed with us trying to foist off group-project work on her like I'm guessing Xander often did with a willing Willow and he wouldn't want to look stupid or unhelpful to her so might actually try when it comes to study.
I'm not actually sure what the relationship is with Angel at this point? Xander certainly doesn't suspect they're dating or snogging on patrols.
Also would it be "awk-weird" for Xander to give Giles respect for dating Jenny and look to him for dating advice in future? I mean Ms Calendar is a fox and even Xander can't believe Giles has never dated before, so if trouble comes up with Amy it'd be nice to have an adult guy to talk to about relationship problems.
I really hope that if this episode goes as canon Xander handles the aftermath better, because this was one of the earliest points Xander was a genuine hero and saved Cordelia's life... only to be comically rude in brushing off her sincere attempt to thank him.
It was kind of the beginning of the end for his character as the writers started insisting whenever Xander did something well he'd ruin it quickly afterwards as comic relief, then over time they just stopped having him be helpful too and instead bad things happening to Xander was the comic relief, which necessitated making him a jerk enough times that people wouldn't feel bad laughing at his misfortune. They tried to recover it near the end when life got more serious in the final seasons, but it never fully worked and just made him a rather sad and painful character.

The joys of a limited viewpoint: Xander doesn't know what's up with Angel, and so neither do you
I am definitely not gonna have Xander being a jerk for no reason.
For looking up to Giles, Xander definitely does that but I don't think he would ask Giles for advice even if he believes Giles knows the right answer, because he isn't great at dealing with adults in general and would most likely prefer asking someone his own age. If you could think of a way for Xander to build that kind of relationship with Giles it would be interesting to see play out

You convinced Amy that working on the science project together would be fun. You didn't know what you wanted to do for the science project yet, but you could take some time and brainstorm it together. Maybe you could find something inspired by your comics to do a science project on to make it a little less boring. Or you could do a potato battery. That was always possible.
Willow was doing something much more complex looking into ultra violet waves, determined to beat her rival Chris this year. She was raving when she came in and told everyone that Chris said he was marked higher because he titled his science fair projects something that the teacher didn't get. She worked to make her stuff approachable, and it had been pulling her down! At least she had that tip now.

That should be simple. And hopefully not end up with anything weird happening to it. It should be fine if Amy kept it in a purification circle while you ran your experiment, right?

It seemed someone was being more creative than normal with their science fair project this year. At least it gave you something to start with, since Willow knew six students at least capable of making cuts as clean and neat as the ones the body parts had.

I'm glad that Xander seems to be putting some effort into his studies. Hopefully, he and Amy will get a good grade.

You headed out to get the scoop on the six students and their partners that Willow knew to have the skill in biology to do what had been done to the corpses. You started with Peter Clarner and his girlfriend Debbie. Peter was fine as long as you were talking to him, but was clearly just using the science fair to spend more time with his girlfriend, creating a carousel powered by candles somehow. Katherine Wexford and her friend Cindy were doing a project on hydroponics, while Holden Webster and Gary had partnered up for a hypnotism experiment to test improved study habits. Andrew Wells was working alone on a project about Pavlo's Dog and how it correlated to learned behaviors in school, and Warren Mears was building a droid to beat people in chess.
You couldn't find Chris Epps, the last person on your list, though you found his partner for the project Eric, taking pictures of girls around school and clearly being a creep about it. He brushed you off when you asked about the science fair project, saying that they'd just breeze through. How Willow's rival managed to be friends with him was beyond you. Eric is clearly acting suspiciously, though I'm not sure that Xander has clued into it. At this point, I think we should look for the project. Maybe Chris is with the project. Though I have to wonder what Willow and Buffy were doing while Xander was interviewing the suspects.

You met up with the others to comb through the school for where the possible jigsaw corpse was. None of you are too happy to be spending extra time in school looking for dead bodies. You do find a teacher's stash of dirty magazines, which was a definite plus. You hadn't thought old Ferman had it in him. Your search did eventually lead you out to one of the old science labs. Sure enough, on a gurney was a stitched together female corpse. There was just one thing missing: the head.
"Well, we found it. Now what?" you asked.
"We find who made it and stop them from finishing it," Buffy said firmly.
"Why isn't it finished?" you ask. "They had three good heads."
"Cause the brains would deteriorate if not fresh," Willow answered grimly.
The meaning of her words sunk in. If this frankenstein bride was gonna be completed, someone would need to die.
"Chris couldn't do this," Willow protested. "He's smart enough, but he's not a creep."
"Even after his brother's death?" Amy asked. "You know that messed him up."
"So guess we need to find Chris after all."
