Breaking Generations a.k.a. My Captain Can't Be This Powerful [Pokémon AU]

[x] Gastly

Ugh I might switch later if Bulbasaur seems to be winning, if we truly can't vote for more than one option, but for now I'm going with the Pokemon I actually want, the Uber Stealth option that completes the Ghost/Psychic/Dark trinity of our special team.

Don't like Bulbasaur very much because it is a bright green tank and that doesn't fit Aya's style. Spinarak wins on sheer uniqueness points and the spider imagery is potentially cool, but it also seems underwhelming and also really brightly colored. Gastly is exactly who we choose to exploit our high Cheat stat. And it's free.

Talking about team roles, another point against taking bulbasaur as more of a tank is that Mr. Mime's screens already make it a defense specialist that can provide protection for the entire team, so everybody else can afford to be on the more aggressive side.

Meanwhile, it's worth noting that Aya's primary is noted to be a sniper and which poison types have the sniper ability? That's right, the bug types.

Do you want a pokemon that can patiently lie in wait with you until the perfect opportunity to take a shot at your target?
Do you want a pokemon that can set a trap for the enemy and drop on them at the perfect moment for maximum damage?
Do you want a pokemon that can cover the area in a highly sensetive web that allows it to act as a spotter that doesn't have to rely on sight?
Do you want a pokemon that can create ropes and nets that help you sneak and trap opponents instead of sending your pokemon on a solo mission?
Do you want a pokemon that can operate regardless of the weather, because it has enough mass to avoid getting blown away by a strong breeze and doesn't need the sun to draw power from?

If any of that is a yes, then Spinarak is your bug!

Man, in terms of versatility and various options, Grasss (5 options) and Bug (5~6 Options depending on the Skorupi ruling) vastly outshadow Ghost and Flying (Each being a unique typing). It's kind of not even funny. Luckily, I'm quite fond of the buttface spider, so I can go with the number superiority. Gengar is pretty cool though...

Fighting by the way would also be a 1.

[X] Spinarak [2 Fate Points]

Okay, so Pablo actually got pretty lucky, Murkrow's are cute, bring you gifts and are suprisingly good in competetive thanks to Prankster making for good support. Joshua though... like I'm not sure if Mr. Mime would have gotten a lot of votes given its general reputations, but if Psychic/Fairy is a unique typing now, he's really done dirty by the Ralts genocide... or maybe there's just a reason Koga things Aya wouldn't make a great successor.

Actually, wasn't vullaby/mandibuzz part of gen 5? It's some options at least.
+1 Fate Point for commentary.

I'll gradually be revealing more about how this universe works, but most of these are a bit off the mark, especially since I recently ruled custom Types for some Pokemon, and since all your MCs are unreliable narrators.

In the update, Aya claims that the Psychic/Fairy typing is unique to Mr. Mime, even though in actuallity it's shared by the the ralts line. That means as far as I can tell there's three options:
1) All the ralts died. (Probably not the case and I honestly didn't expect anyone to take it serious, so I'm now kind of tempted to make up some fake lore.)
2) There's some some divide between the regions and Aya only knows pokemon species native to the Kanto/Johto region. (Which would actually be somewhat probable and explains why the base roster only goes up to Gen 2 and why the options form other regions cost more Fate Points.)
3) The author just forgot. (Which is kind of killing them all by accident and thus kinda sorta a genocide from the meta-perspective.)
I'll reward you with Fate Points if you write an omake for it.

At the moment, I've only planned for Kanto/Johto in this entire universe (because I'm bad at big planning) but like I have hinted, I'm willing to smuggle in Pokemon from outside this continent (up to Gen IV) through use of Fate Points.

The reason why the base roster only goes up to Gen 2 is because i'm a dirty genwunner who didn't really play much beyond RSE, and didn't go too deeply into Hoenn besides. All my quests have been Gen 1+2.

+1 Fate Point for this commentary.

Very good insight.

+2 Fate Points.

Total: +6 Fate Points.

You presently have a collective total of 14 Fate Points.

Be careful; more expensive isn't always better. Fate Points are not a measure of how powerful or desirable a certain option should be. They're a measure of how far away from my... let's say headcanon (despite that I'm the QM) the option actually is.

Argh, I'm too late. But looks like my beautiful Gastly wouldn't have won anyway and Spinarak is not a bad choice.

I'd like to name our pokemon after something related to "two" as we are a second daughter, the double affinity and double Type of our pokemon.
But I realy suck at names, so best I could come up that fits the japanesque setting is
[X] Nini

Fate Points are magic and can break continuity.

Take one.

You now have a collective 13 Fate Points.

Gah. This silly genwunner forgot that Mime Jr exists. I'm swapping Jojo's Starter to the preevo.

Since Mime Jr is a baby pokemon, and there is a tradition of counting baby pokemon as more of a pre-evolution than a stage 1 pokemon, you would be will within your rights to still have him start with a Mr. Mime. (As a fellow genwunner I have a soft spot for the odd ball Mr. Mime, but find little to like about Mime Jr!)

They didn't exactly do it any favour with the shape of its head, but their actual behaviour is pretty endearing.

Although, more than that I'm kind of kicking myself for picking up that Joshua has an alliterative name, but not the second letter of his names. I'm honestly not sure if I should be giving you points for the reference, or subtract them for not going all in and giving the Jojo a jigglypuff for the music reference angle. :V

Jigglypuff would have been a Starter option if you had chosen Jojo as your MC. :D

Woo! Glad Spinarak won.

Toxic Thread is such a nifty signature move, and I think it's the best fit for a ninja.

[X] Kumori

It means "cloudy" in Japanese... except "Kumo" also means spider, so it's a dumb pun also.

Gunna be real, for a moment I was like "Wait, why is this thread toxic? Has there been some chargen drama?" XD

Then I realised it was a move.

[X] Kumori

Yes, finally someone is bringing the puns!
Gunna be real, for a moment I was like "Wait, why is this thread toxic? Has there been some chargen drama?" XD
And now I kind of want to call our spider Gift, which isn't just christmasy a term for the internet/anonymity turning people into jerks, but also the german word for poison for even more pun power.

Old.2 - Number Two

"You mean we all have double Affinities?" You grimace. "That's not exactly uncommon, and not necessarily a good thing. That narrows down our pool of usable Pokémon, actually."

Having two Affinities means that you can only use Pokémon that matches both Types, so having an extra Affinity actually reduces your versatility. Especially in the case of Murkrow and Mime Jr., because you're sure that Dark/Flying and Fairy/Psychic are unique combinations.

And as for your own Starter...

Nini is Poison/Bug, a combination you know it shares with at least the Beedrill and Venomoth lines.

"You're wrong." Pablo hums, then shakes his head. "Dual Affinities are a lot less common than most people think; maybe less than 2% of all Trainers actually have dual Affinities."

"Correct!" Joshua grins. "I'm surprised you're familiar with the statistic."

Pablo clicks his tongue. "My father was a dual-Typed Trainer, too. Anyway. The only reason you think they -- we are more common than we actually are? It's that dual-Typed Trainers typically become masters of their specific line, and tend to be far more high profile than their peers. In Fuchsia, you don't even get one from the new graduates, some years."

That... makes sense, actually. All the Trainers that you know of with double Affinities are the likes of Lance, Agatha, or Will.

"Wait. So it's not a bad thing?"

"Nope. But it's not a good thing, either. It's just a thing. Dual Affinities are rare, and most dual-Typed Trainers either flop badly, or make it big."

'Flop badly'. "That's... a way to put it."

"So that's why they lumped all of us together, regardless of Type." Pablo shakes his head. "We would have been hard to teach for a mono-Typed Trainer, anyway. And as far as I know, Fuchsia doesn't have access to any Honchkrow or Mr. Mime specialists."

You know of at least two other Bug/Poison specialists in the service of your father, though.

"Yes, exactly! And this year..."

"We have three," you finish. A bubble of resigned laughter rises up in your throat. "Might as well give up trying to get us a suitable teacher, and have us try to pick it up ourselves."

"No."

"!" "Huh?"

You turn away from Joshua's blossoming grin to face the man who's suddenly there.

He's dressed in simple loose clothes, all black and white. None of the fabric betrays any bulges that would reveal where he's keeping his Pokéballs, and... is that a PokéGear in his hand? That's... primitive. "6:00 A.M. Looks like I made it on time."

Joshua waves at the man. "You must be our squad leader."

"That's right." He tucks the PokéGear into his pant pocket, then scans over the three of you, one by one. He looks young, like he can't be more than thirty. He doesn't seem to carry the oppressive presence you've come to expect from a seasoned Trainer, either. "I'm your suitable teacher for all of your Affinities. Don't worry. You're in good hands. My name is Haku, but you can call me Leader, or Teacher."

Training kicks in, overriding your misgivings, and you snap off a crisp salute. "Yes, sir!" "Yes, sir!" "Yes, sir!"

Your leader's mellow gaze lingers on Pablo impassively for a long second, then he nods. "Good. Let's get to somewhere we can get to know your Pokémon. Follow me."

You glance at your new squadmates, but neither Joshua nor Pablo seem to mirror your hesitations.

Or if they do, then they're much, much better at hiding it.

A quiet fifteen minutes' march took you first beyond the old fortress walls, then past whatever young civilisation has mushroomed around the stronghold, and then even beyond that, into the beginnings of the Wilderness. Stone cliffs and sparse forestry surround the clearing you find yourself in, somewhere on the southeastern outskirts of the city.

Not a surprise, since this is the only direction inland from Fuchsia, which is perched right on the crown of the eponymous Fuchsian Cape.

"Alright. This should be far enough from the city, and as good a spot as any." Haku turns to face you, brushing imaginary dirt from his hands off of each other. "You haven't bonded with your Pokémon yet, right?"

"Only a rudimentary bond," Joshua says. The ceremony where you received your Starter was more useful to awaken your Affinity than actually forge a bond with your Pokémon. The moment a Pokéball is unsealed for the first time, the baby Pokémon imprints on the human who released it, and at the same time, the mana resonance is what triggers the awakening of the new Trainer's Affinity.

Well. That's the theory, at least.

A true Pokémon-Trainer bond, of course, is only forged when the two fight together, win or lose.

"Let's help you guys with that, then." Haku nods, then gestures to Pablo. "We'll start with the Murkrow."

"Yes, sir."

Pablo reaches for the Pokéball on his belt, while both you and Joshua quickly move to clear his immediate vicinity. He glances at your leader, and seeing the tacit approval in Haku's gaze, tosses the Pokéball to the ground.

"Fedora, I choose you!"

Wark!

The Murkrow appears in a rapidly dissipating cloud of smoke, and Pablo deftly catches the Pokéball on its return arc. The midnight-feathered bird is a cute little thing, just like most Starters, but there's no such thing as a helpless Pokémon.

Its feathers flutter, making a brrr sort of noise, as it peers around curiously.

Haku snaps his fingers, and with a burst of mana, another identical Murkrow is suddenly face to face with Fedora.

"!" "!?" "Oh, interesting."

Fedora bristles, puffing up its feathers to look bigger, but the other Murkrow simply preens carelessly.

"You can use weapons, if you want." Haku says. "I'll only use Pokémon and magic. You can even target me, and if you land even a single hit, I'll consider it your win. We'll continue until one Pokémon is no longer able to fight."

Pablo narrows his eyes. "I see. You're a Murkrow specialist, too. I guess I'm lucky."

Haku's lips thin into something less than a smile. "Not quite. But good guess."

"Alright, I'll play."

Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!

When did he--? A staccato of gunshots and the smell of Thunder, wisps of crackling mana smoke rising from the barrel.

Both Murkrow are gone, and Haku just nods with a quiet hum. Six craters of upturned soil draw a curved line in the grass, hinting at where the birds might have disappeared to.

"Tch. Weapons aren't gonna work, I see."

Your leader shakes his head. "Not against a Trained Pokémon, it won't."

"Hmph."

Pablo locks gazes with Haku, and nothing seems to happen for a moment.

A second, two, and then five. You swallow.

Haku cracks a smile.

"Nice try," he says.

Your eyes dart to the stray leaf gently spinning in the air as it picks up speed, and then is suddenly engulfed into a storm of dark winds, twisting together into a tornado of twisting shadows. Another heartbeat later, the streaks of shadow rip together into a flurry of feathers, and Fedora is suddenly trapped within the turbulent winds, spinning helplessly in its clutches.

Whoosh! Wa-ark!

Pablo closes his eyes, inhaling a long breath. "It was worth a shot. I'm not gonna wrest those winds away from you."

"As I said, nice try." Haku nods again. "That's quite enough, I think."

As abruptly as they began, the winds dissipate. A final gust blows past your face and tousles your hair, and then the atmosphere is still, leaving behind only a pleasant morning breeze, and none of the tension of the battle.

Hrk!

Fedora's slams into the ground with a soft thump, and Pablo sighs.

"Fedora, return."

"Phew." Joshua whistles next to you. "So this is a Trainer, huh..? I've never actually watched my Mom battle before."

You shake your head. "Me, neither. My Father, I mean."

You're not sure why, but even cadets don't get to witness a real Pokémon battle until after they graduate. That was a lot faster and more intense than you expected... And you're not sure you can perform any better than Pablo did.

The other Murkrow doesn't reappear, but your leader turns to you, regardless. "Alright, Spinarak. You're next."

Well, shit.

Despite the decisive loss, Pablo seems in much better cheer than before the fight. He actually grins at you, instead of smirking. "Good luck, Aya."

Joshua darts a hand up into the air. "Oh, Teacher! Wait!"

"Hmm?" Haku peers at him. "You wanna go first?"

"Nope!" He shakes his head emphatically. "But what if I fought her instead? At least one of us has a chance to win and grow stronger, that way."

Your leader pauses, then turns back to you. "Sure, why not. If she agrees."

You are armed with a sniper rifle, which you are confident will take down most small and medium-sized Pokémon in a single shot, if you manage to place the bullet. In a fight this quick and close, you don't expect to have any time to reload, so you might only have one chance, unless you can find a way to disengage.

You also have a nigh-infinite supply of shuriken that you can toss at will, good for either distraction, herding, or whittling down a Pokémon's health. At the moment, you can throw 4 shuriken in a single movement, but only in a single direction. You are relatively accurate, but the projectiles are slow and easy to dodge, and they do not travel very far. Regardless, you are confident this will be useful against both Haku and Joshua, no matter who you choose to fight.

Nini is small and squishy as far as Pokémon go, so you need to make sure it doesn't get hit at all. Thankfully, this is its preferred terrain, and it can likely use its webs and venom to its advantage somehow. You can communicate semi-telepathically with it, and your awakened Bug Affinity means you can not only micromanage your commands to your Pokémon, but also get some vague sensory feedback from its senses. Your awakened Poison Affinity means you have a good sense of both your own and your opponent's weak points, and you know where to hit for it to hurt... but only if you can hit it at all.

You currently have 13 Fate Points.

Gonna steal a page from konamikode's combat mechanics.

The character sheets represent some of what you and your Pokemon are able to do. If you're not sure, ask. Moves are not a thing, but you may be able to achieve some effects similar to what Moves do in canon. In effect, Pokemon are a lot more versatile in what they can do, but to find out exactly what they can or cannot do requires some trial and error.

Aya also doesn't know everything a Pokemon can do, so I will only reveal to you information that she already knows.

The traits on the charsheet don't necessarily represent what they mean in the games, so take them with a grain of salt.

Quoted directly from @konamikode :
Instead of relying on numbers, I'll write something fitting using banter, battle strategy, seriousness of the battle setting, etc, etc. Wounds and stuff will also depend on things such as relative strength and how each side approaches the battle.

Sometimes, I may still use a couple dice rolls to determine things in combat, though. Let's see. I haven't done this QM-ing thing in a long, long time.

This is basically your combat tutorial post, but I'm hoping fights won't be too common or frequent in this quest. Let's see, though.
