Breaking Generations a.k.a. My Captain Can't Be This Powerful [Pokémon AU]

[X] Kumori

It means "cloudy" in Japanese... except "Kumo" also means spider, so it's a dumb pun also.

Gunna be real, for a moment I was like "Wait, why is this thread toxic? Has there been some chargen drama?" XD

Then I realised it was a move.
Ah! This would have had a chance at winning had it been submitted earlier, I think. Or if I structured the votes better.

+1 Fate Point

For the submit, and for the funny.

You now have a collective total of 14 Fate Points.
[X] Kumori

Yes, finally someone is bringing the puns!

And now I kind of want to call our spider Gift, which isn't just christmasy a term for the internet/anonymity turning people into jerks, but also the german word for poison for even more pun power.

[X] Gift
I'm not sure I'm familiar with that jargon/slang. But good last minute effort.

Arghh Types disadvantage start to get messy with double types. Joshua has Mime Jr - Psychic/Fairy.
Our Poison does double dmg against Fairy, Bug is double dmg against Psychic, but only half damage against Fairy.
Psychic is double against our Poison, but Fairy is half damage against the Bug.
Sooo, we're at slight Type advantage against Joshua. We should hit them with Poison attacks and try to evade their Psychic attacks.
I'm actually thinking of surprising our enemy and attacking aggresively with venom bites, poison stings or whatever poisonous we got, so they can't focus enough for psychic attacks. And only retreating and hiding in canopy if we manage to deal status effect poisoning.

E:
I'll also try to guess what our Glorious Captain is using. I assume that he is Psychic/??? and his mon is probaby from Kanto/Johto. I think the Murkrow was some kind of Illusion or Substitute to confuse the enemy.
Now, there are not that many Pyshcic dual types in gen II:
Natu/Xatu - Psychic/Flying
Lugia - Psychic/Flying
Celebi - Psychic/Grass
Mr. Mime - Psychic/Fairy
Slowpoke/Slowbro/Slowking - Water/Psychic
Exeggcute/Exeggutor - Grass/Psychic
Starmie - Water/Psychic
Jynx - Ice/Psychic
Girafarig - Normal/Psychic

I doubt it's Celebi or Lugia, because they're Legendaries and I doubt it's Mr. Mime because we already have one in our party. The finishing move looked like some kind of Flying attack, it also would be easier to disguise one bird pokemon as another bird pokemon, so my guess would be Natu/Xatu.

"I'm your suitable teacher for all of your Affinities. Don't worry. You're in good hands. My name is Haku, but you can call me Leader, or Teacher."

Training kicks in, overriding your misgivings, and you snap off a crisp salute. "Yes, sir!" "Yes, sir!" "Yes, sir!"
I love that immediately after he asks them to call him Teacher or Leader, they call him "Sir" instead.

Which is perfectly valid, but seems like it might not be if you squint.

A true Pokémon-Trainer bond, of course, is only forged when the two fight together, win or lose.
The old ways. The true ways.

Haku's lips thin into something less than a smile. "Not quite. But good guess."
Inb4 ditto
Damn, someone beat me to it.

Although there is a possibility that he somehow has poke-necromancy like his face-sake, the protagonist of Solo Levelling.

I completely don't have our character's voice down yet, so I won't give exact banter instructions.

[x] Fight Joshua, but he can also use his weapons against Nini. [1 Fate Point]
--[x] Banter : Indicate that you like that idea, and ask Nini to show you what she can do.
--[x] Strategy : Strafe to one side and hurl a hail of shuriken at Mr Mime Jr.'s face, attempting to disrupt its focus and make it flinch. Nini charges in from the other side and tries to poison him.
--[x] Thoughts : If it's a choice between definitely not winning and probably winning, I'll take the latter. My opponent has a type advantage, so I need to make it hard for him to land a hit. As a young and untested pokemon, Mr Mime Jr. should lack the instincts to not drop everything and defend itself when its head is attacked, and should struggle to manifest barriers in multiple directions. Nini is also untrained, but should be capable of flanking.

Hm, so Mime Jr. doesn't look much more durable than our Nini, so one good stealth attack could put things into our favour. That being said, if filter is anything like it works in the games a poison attack isn't going to be as effective as we might hope for it to be. I guess our best hope is wishing that the mime doesn't have much in terms of psychic powers yet, otherwise Technician is another ability that actually very much pulls its weight in a fight between low level pokemon.

That being said, spider webs to slow Fortnight down enough until we can secure a shot with our sniper rifle might also be a valid strategy. Funnily enough, despite being the stealth character, odds would actually be in our favour in a straight fist fight against Joshua and given Fedora's stealth manouver, attacking the trainer does appear to be a valid strategy. Although, for a training match I assume we shouldn't be trying to hit Jojo with an actual sniper rifle.

Question, does Nini have to get in close to bite, or can we translate spinaraks starting out with poison sting into the ability to shoot poison needles from a distance? Range is going to be a huge advantage when it comes to two squishy combatants.

I see a problem here in that you're not accounting at all for Joshua taking a shot at Nini himself, given that he's also allowed to use his weapons.

throwing the shurikens at Joshua would probably be more effective. Maybe split it, 2 to each if they are close/aligned enough.

Is attacking the trainers even Koscher for the Joshua option?

Good catch lol. I wrote those parts on completely different days.

Although there is a possibility that he somehow has poke-necromancy like his face-sake, the protagonist of Solo Levelling.
I didn't think about that. Nice.

I completely don't have our character's voice down yet, so I won't give exact banter instructions.
No worries. I will adjust, regardless.

Lots of insights from both @Skewfiend and @Edgedancer, so take a combined 5 Fate Points for all of the above discussion.

You currently have 21 Fate Points.

Mime Jr. doesn't look much more durable than our Nini
Aya: Mime Jr. is twice as heavy as Nini... So even though it's a similar size, I'm pretty sure it's twice as durable, too.

Although, for a training match I assume we shouldn't be trying to hit Jojo with an actual sniper rifle.

Is attacking the trainers even Koscher for the Joshua option?
Aya: I don't actually want to kill my new squadmate... Humans are a lot more killable than Pokemon, but... Maybe something will happen if I try to attack Joshua directly? Or if I command Nini to attack Joshua? Leader said we could attack him, but he didn't actually say anything about each other.

Maybe I should still focus on taking down Fortnight, though. I'm not sure whether Joshua will try to attack me, whether lethally or not, but this is supposed to be an exercise to forge a bond with our Pokemon, not actually a life-or-death battle.

Aya: I'm not completely sure what Nini can do, yet. As far as I know, it has a venomous and parasitic bite, and if given enough time, can spin sticky webs into nigh-invisible traps. I think it can also shoot its web a small distance and use it like a grappling hook? That's about all that I know for now.

[X] Plan String shot
-[X] Fight Joshua, but he can also use his weapons against Nini. [1 Fate Point]
--[X] Banter : I would like my first battle to be with an equal. Joshua, please take good care of Nini.
--[X] Strategy : Distract Mime Jr with shuriken and have Nini retreat towards and climb the nearby trees. Nini shots her web at Fortnight from a distance, while using the foliage as cover to reposition between each shot to avoid return fire from Joshua. Continue harrying Fortnight with shuriken to draw its attention and give Nini an opportunity to drop down on it, deliver a poison bite and retreat. Once his mobility is suitably limited, try to line up a shot at Fortnight with your sniper rifle.
--[X] Thoughts : You do feel some amount of kinship with Joshua, but you'd much rather have your first battle with Nini be a victory. If that means you have to use some amount of trickery to compensate for its lack of durability, then so be it.

Right, not having a long range poison attack is inconvinient, but range is still our friend, even if we need to close in eventually. Hopefully the micromanagement from Bug will help set up a proper ambush, if that does succeed at least time will be in our favour.

Although, in all honesty, part of me is tempted to use Nini as a distraction to ambush Joshua. Nothing lethal, just wrestling him into a submission hold, or something like that. That might be a side effect pf playing a stealth character.

Maybe it's early, maybe I haven't read all the subtext properly, but I don't like Joshua's little maneuver here. An uncharitable reading (like the one I'm doing right now) would say that he wants to fight us to both have an xp advantage over the rest of us and look more competent to Teacher.

[x] Fight Haku, but you don't know what Pokémon he will use.
--[x] Banter : "I look forward to your instruction, Teacher." *bow*
--[x] Strategy : Full cheese mode; Do not release Nini until hidden, sneak around and attempt to find an angle on Teacher. When the weak spot is revealed, have Nini engage by spitting webs to try and slow him down, before knocking his lights out with the Sniper Rifle. If that doesn't work, strafe opposite directions and pin him in on either side of you and Nini, peppering him with shuriken while Nini slings around with their webs looking for an opportunity to land on him.
--[x] Thoughts : Teacher said firearms wouldn't work against trained pokemon, and that we were allowed to target him, so I should play to my strengths with trickery and stealth.

I'm not actually expecting to tag Teacher with the gun, because if his pokemon can dodge bullets he probably can too. But, hopefully, a well-executed plan that plays to our strengths gives Teacher what he wanted from this exercise.

Edit: Can we use Fate Points to assist us in the battle?

Nice. Not to be meta, but does that sound like the kind of character I would write? :D and do you think your answer would change how I write him?

Very novel interpretation!

I'm not saying it's a good or bad idea, but take 2 Fate Points!

You now have 23 Fate Points.

Edit: Can we use Fate Points to assist us in the battle?
Yes. Fate Points can be used to buy almost anything, even retcons or forbidden information. Even rollbacks and swapping characters mid-arc. It's just a matter of price and consensus. What do you want to buy? I'll tell you the price.

It might be stupid expensive even for something trivial, though. Or cheap for something non-trivial, if I like the idea.

I dunno, maybe! It's true that historically you're not writing brown-nosing rivals out to lightly sabotage their teammates, but if there ever was a time to start it would be a PokeQuest.

Could we see the price for getting Nini a ranged attack, and camouflage? I think that would be broadly in all of the player's interest to know what the prices for those would be.

Do it! (Speaking as not your QM)
You know, setting up the "take good care of Nini" only to then use it as a distraction does play pretty well into the thoughts section of using trickery if needed that I already have... Screw it, I might as well, more plans rarely hurt.

I mean, would that even be that bad? Like, if we take him up on the idea, it's because we also think we have a chance of taking him. It's not like he had any chance to rig the fight (that we know off), so it'd be a perfectly fair competition for top dog between him and Aya. Now Pablo would have some grounds to complain about being left out (which may or may not be related to him having the pretty clear type advantage over us), but we're not Pablo. Still you might want to decline on his behalf.

Interesting. I'm willing to upgrade Naturewalk to Naturestealth for 20 Fate Points.

Naturestealth grants you Stealth in grassland and forest terrains.

Stealth means you move completely silently, and you cannot be targeted by a pre-emptive ranged attack through visual obstacles. Once you launch a ranged attack, though, Stealth's effects wear off until you reposition.
Entities that can see you through obstacles can still target you normally, and AoE attacks/splash damage still work normally.

For a ranged attack... What kind of range?

Let's say we have the theoretical ranges: melee, close, medium, long.

Nini's web currently hits at close range.
Shuriken currently hits at close range.
Sniper hits at long range.

I can let you unlock Toxic Thread early, adding an instantaneous (non-persistent) contact poison effect to all of your webbing, for 30 Fate Points. You're close, since I intend to reward you for this set of comments/questions once I read them again later.

For anything else, ask, because I'm not as creative as some of you lol.

but we're not Pablo, so you might want to decline on his behalf.
??? Can you explain what you mean by this bit again? It's late and reading comprehension deteriorates fast.

I like the plan with facing Joshua, but how doe others feel about swapping out the banter from saying we want to face an equal to something more like "I would be willing to take your challenge, Joshua" or even something more combative like "If Joshua is intimidated to face Teacher, we'd be happy to accept his challenge."

Naturestealth does seem like what we're looking for, but I think without a ranged attack or way to bait targets into us we're not getting the full value. Still, something for the thread to consider?

I'd like something that hits at medium, please! A blowdart for us, perhaps, and/or a poison needle launch attack for Nini.

Honestly, I kinda trailed of at that point. It's basically just a reiterration of the point that it's arguably unfair to Pablo to get forced into fighting the teacher rather than get an opportunity to win, but that doesn't make the offer unfair towards us given that it'd still be a clean fight regardless of Joshua's motivation. Meaning that we have no reason to decline on our own behalf. (Well, unless we think we're going to lose anyway, I suppose.)

I did consider something like "Thank you for letting Nini's first battle be a victory." but in the end that struck me as needlesly combative. I'd much rather go for the contrast of polite in speech, yet agressive in action. Plus, the more we make the fight personal, the more likely he is to keep his attention on us.

I'd like something that hits at medium, please! A blowdart for us, perhaps, and/or a poison needle launch attack for Nini.
Interesting.

Spinarak/Ariados is a character I imagine to be built like a Broodmother/Spiderform Elise, so lots of mobility buffs and debuffs, traps, lifesteal, and upon evolution, the potential to build an army of Spinarak.

(Maybe i should write some of this info into one of my official posts? But Aya doesn't know. Aaaaa i should not QM while tired and sleepy.)

I'll allow you to boost Threaded to medium-range for 15 Fate Points, and coupled with Toxic Thread that gets you a restrictive web with contact poison for a total of 45 Fate Points. This gets you the upgrade for basically 3-4 levels early. (Max level is 12, btw. So you're skipping straight to midgame abilities.)

Alternatively, just spit the poison without the web at close range: 10 Fate Points.
Upgrade to medium: 15 Fate Points.
Total: 25 Fate Points.

But this doesn't upgrade your Threaded, and I personally think it's a bad investment..

Granting a new body part to Nini which will let her shoot spines or needles will be a lot more expensive, and not useful in the long run. I don't think you should build in that direction at all.

I mean. You also don't have to win this fight, though. Lol. This is more a fight supposed to teach you what you and your squad can do, familiarise everyone with each other a bit, and very much the equivalent of "How Growl and Tackle works", rather than "I need Flamethrower and Aerial Ace now.".

I think Ditto is far more likely, but other semi-plausible option would be Zoroark/Zorua. Gen 5, so I think it's available. Aerial Ace, Copycat, and Bounce are the only ways it can do a flying move, so the whirlwind/gust-like thing against Murkrow doesn't seem especially doable, and mechanically, Zoroark disguises as something on your own team, so it's pretty unlikely.

I'd like to reveal at this point that it's canonically impossible for Pokemon to use off-type abilities.

So monotyped Pokemon will only be able to use either their bodies, or whatever their Type is.

A Zoroark... Don't take this as WoGM yet, but it'll probably be either Dark/Ghost or Dark/Fairy. Does not have access to Flying.

The whirldwind/gust thing is a combined application of Dark and Flying mana by Haku to show Pablo some possible tricks of how to use his Affinity.
