Breaking Generations a.k.a. My Captain Can't Be This Powerful [Pokémon AU]

I have artwork for the main characters!

I'm gonna find some time over the next week to crop these properly, and then they'll be going onto the character sheet on the front page.

Current tally :
[3] Pablo Argento [DARK]
[8] Joshua Joy [FAIRY]
[8] Koga Aya [POISON]

In the event of a tie, GM's arbitration wins.

yesssss

I quite like the feel of the setting, based on the intro. Forgotten lore and a stratified society, yet a short enough modern timeline such that sweeping societal and technological changes are still happening. Militaristic education, yet the land has settled down to not be a constant deathworld (unless if you go seek for it).

Starter pokemon being preserved baby pokemon from a limited supply of pokeballs = an interesting touch. It might alsomean that we'll only have one pokemon to train and bond with for a while; it's unclear if there is much (or any) catching of new Wild pokemon or breeding of pokemon. (Quest-wise, I like this since we'll already be busy exploring relationships with squadmates, who each have their own pokemon. A medium-sized main cast already there from the start.)

ok vote time
...goddamnit, my fav two options are currently in the lead with similar vote numbers. And I don't want to see either of them lose. ;_;

At the beginning of each arc, you may re-pick one of the 3 main characters.
This will be your Player Character for the entirety of that arc.
whoa this is neat. ok QM, I'll do what I can to help get to the next arc, so that this first vote is merely about which academy graduate we first get to pilot & see more backstory for, while interacting with the other two squadmates externally.

In which case, I wanna start out with:
[x] Koga Aya [POISON]

Since I wanna see more about her life and mindset and post-graduation capabilities first. Poison expertise and maybe ninja-ing in a elite militaristic yet stably expanding-settler society. And why would her dad not train her? No need for a prepared spare heir? Is her sister Anzu just that skilled at combat and politics, and unlikely to die? And is there any other person she could have gone to for training? Beg her sister?

I *think* I'm fine with seeing the fun and mystery of Joshua Joy from the outside first, then hopefully trying him out the next arc. But I wouldn't mind starting with him. (Edit: ...I definitely have not been pokemon-ing enough. I somehow completely missed the Nurse Joy family aspect until zeromass mentioned it. Whoops. Ok I'm definitely ok with Joshua Joy as well now.)

Pablo Argento seems the most serious and political & conspiracy-ish, and could be fun as a Dark rookie in a team with a Fairy rookie and maybe a Psychic captain, as The Grey Mage hypothesized. He just doesn't seem...that fun to me at first glance. So I'd want to see more of his personality and speech first. (lol maybe it turns out he's totally chuuni, which would amuse me..)

Take +3 Fate Points for the commentary.

The thread now has a collective 5 Fate Points.

I'm happy.

What do fate points do?
You can spend them to do OOC things, or to nudge fate in your favour. For example, let's say you want to pick up a second Pokemon, many arcs before you are supposed to. Or gain access to a Pokemon you wouldn't otherwise have. If you have enough, you can even buy deus ex machina, or perhaps even change an Affinity.

Pricing is at my arbitration.

Do we get fate points for asking questions? Because I'm curious, is the typing supposed to be for the starter Pokemon or is it our type speciality?

And speaking of specialty, will there be a mechanic that affects our efficacy with that specific type and others outside that?

You do if they're a good question. I'll give you +1 Fate Point for all of these combined.

The thread now has a combined 6 Fate Points.

The Type is both. You can only train pokémon with at least one Type that matches your own, so your Starter is guaranteed to have that Type, as well.

In this universe, all Trainers are Type-specialists.

There is no mechanic that affects your ability to use Pokémon of other Types, because you can't at all.

Your dual-Typed Pokémon can still use its other Type, but... There *is* a mechanic that allows you to do interesting things with your matching Type, and not the other.

Basic physical attacks are not a Typed attack in this universe. Normal does something different, but you don't know what it is.

Pokémon can only use energy/mana of a Type they possess. So no Normal moves for a Pokémon that doesn't have that Typing.

Did I miss anything?

Hopefully lock and next update within the day, if I feel well enough.

Sorry in advance for the question spam.

What would happen if a Pokémon would evolve into your type, or evolve out of your type?

For example, could a Dark type specialist train a Larvitar because Tyranitar is Dark type, and what would happen if a Ground specialist's Pupitar evolved and lost the Ground type?

Does the 'only moves of your type' mean that Pokémon that evolve via Ancient Power don't evolve?

Do Pokémon with Abilities related to other types, (Gligar w/ Poison Heal, Seadra with Poison Point) not get access to those Abilities?

How would a Pokémon that changes type (Kecleon, Ditto) work?

Good question. I'll rule this as Pokemon in this universe having different Typings from canon.

In this specific case, Larvitar is already Rock/Dark from the get go, and doesn't have Ground in the first place. I'll handle this on an ad-hoc basis.

Does the 'only moves of your type' mean that Pokémon that evolve via Ancient Power don't evolve?
Evolution operates on a completely different mechanic in this universe. No evolution stones, no trades, no happiness, no friendship.

You don't know yet what that mechanic is, since you also don't know yet IC.

Do Pokémon with Abilities related to other types, (Gligar w/ Poison Heal, Seadra with Poison Point) not get access to those Abilities?
I'm not planning to have Moves and Abilities in this universe, only Type Masteries and what you can do with them. Abilities may still manifest, but let's see. I'll also deal with it on an ad-hoc basis. I'm still playing around with possible mechanics for this quest in the first place, since I want a less rigid system than what I'm used to.

How would a Pokémon that changes type (Kecleon, Ditto) work?
They'll be their original Type instead. In both of these cases, that would be Normal.

+2 Fate Points.

You now have a collective 8 Fate Points.
