Break Glass in Case of Emergency (Exalted Exigent-Creation Quest)

Voting is open for the next 12 hours, 7 minutes
Alright, time for the rolls for the Chosen of Bears.

First is the power level. DC 80 to see if the Exigent is Celestial level or not.

Roll Result: 19, Terrestrial Level

Next is Laughing Bear's chances at survival. Now, Laughing Bear is already dying here from the poison, so that's going to provide a -20 penalty to the roll. In total, for a DC of 80, that means:

Roll Modifiers: Terrestrial (-0), Minor (+0), Already Dying (-20)
Roll Result: 24 - 20 = 4, Dead of course

Lifespan this time. DC 40 for centuries, DC 100 for millennia.

Roll Modifiers: Terrestrial (+0)
Roll Result: 25, the Chosen of Bears will live a relatively normal lifespan, maybe slightly longer than usual.

Finally, we have legacy. DC 80, the Exaltation can be passed down onto someone else a few times. DC 95, it lasts forever.

Roll Result: 5, it dies with the user.

Overall, very low rolls here, and that means a very average Exigent. The Chosen of Bears is going to need to make their brief appearance all the more memorable.

You know, I just realized: Laughing Bear's Chosen is going to have a very *interesting* build in terms of Charm Themes. You'll see for yourselves once I get the next post up, which won't happen until I get off work. If you're curious, I'd suggest taking a look at his vote description and seeing how they're might be synergies.

The Second Exigent: Part 3 New
[X] Deep in the Linowan lands, Laughing Bear slumbers in his cave as he has done for centuries, playing games with the youth and granting blessings to them. Until recently. Now, his slumber is not that of hibernation but of weakness, as a poison as overtaken his body, perpetrated by an unknown figure. His unconscious prayers to you are delirious, but simple: He needs a champion to avenge him before he dies. (Northeast, Minor)

Dice Results:
Power Level: 19, Terrestrial
God Survival: 4, Dead
Lifespan: 25, Normal Lifespan
Exaltation: 5, Dies with its user

This request was quite the unusual one, not in its context but in how it was delivered. Laughing Bear was a minor god who during the winter slumbered in a nearby cave, just like the ursine he was named after. The closer to spring, the more awake he became, and so the bear god set up a friendly competition with the village's youth: Whoever was the last person to touch his fur, without disturbing his sleep, would receive a blessing of strength from him once spring had come. Of course, those who did disturb his sleep were scared away by a loud roar, but all knew that Laughing Bear would never actually attack or chase down the children, it was all just a game for him.

But something changed this winter. While Laughing Bear was in the more dormant stage of his hibernation, an assassin entered into his cave and stabbed him with a poisoned dagger, which he did not wake from due to sheer lethargy. The poison sapped away his vitality as he slept, preventing him from ever awakening fully. Worse, it seemed to separate his mind from his body, allowing his mind to become conscious (in some sense of the word) and aware of the damage being done to his inanimate corpus. This poison was one deadly enough to kill gods, and so with a delirious plea the mind of Laughing Bear begged You from inside his own body to provide a spark of Exigence, so that his death may at least prove useful and so that a champion could be created who would avenge him.

Current Traits:
Power Level: Terrestrial
Lifespan: Mortal
Exaltation: Dies With User
Charm Themes:
  • Hibernation: The Exalt will be able to enter a healing coma, rapidly restoring from harm and halting aging while asleep. (Stamina)(Gained From Patron)
  • Physical Strength: The Exalt will have great physical strength (Strength)(Gained From Patron)(Effect: +10 Bonus to Fight Events)
  • Delirious Slumber: The Exalt can think and communicate with others while asleep... to a degree. (Charisma)(Gained From Situation)
  • Poison Affinity: The Exalt can resist, identify, create and apply poisons well. (Charisma, Stamina, Strength)(Gained From Situation)
Material Affinity: Moonsilver (Neutral), All Others (Dissonant)
Martial Arts: Terrestrial
Sorcery: Ivory Circle Necromancy
Added Traits: None

You acquiesced. How could You not? Something about this situation, about being a conscious mind in an unconscious body, it wore away at your eternal valor, a wriggling fear that You too might end up nothing more than a body playing at life, stuck at the Games of Divinity for all eternity. It was... terrifying.

So You sent the still-slumbering god his spark, once again a bright white core surrounded by a rainbow flame. It entered into his body, accelerating his deterioration. At this rate, the first person to touch the dying god at all would be the first to receive his Exaltation.

Select who will be Laughing Bear's candidate, since he is in no position to choose for himself. As a Terrestrial, they will gain a +20 bonus to Events of the same type.

[][Candidate] A young man came in, bearing a spear and shield on his back. He was training to become a chief's guard, and his newfound ability to rapidly heal from injuries would make him nearly unstoppable. (Bonus to Fight)

[][Candidate] A young woman came in, bearing an ursine trinket around her neck. She had studied to become the bear god's priestess, and with his death will carry on his duties in his name, even while asleep. (Bonus to Lead)

[][Candidate] A boy came in, bearing woodworking tools on his belt. He practiced to become the best whittler in his tribe, yet his expertise with trees would give him much insight into how poisonous sap could be extracted. (Bonus to Make)

[][Candidate] A girl came in, making next to no sounds that could be detected. Her greatest power was patience, and with her passive insights she will decipher the mystery of how Laughing Bear's death was arranged. (Bonus to Sneak)

[][Candidate] A child came in, bearing a smile on his face that would morph into dismay at noticing the bear's injuries. He was skilled in both honesty and in persuasion, and with Laughing Bear's hospitality he would welcome all. (Bonus to Talk)

Your heart went out for the dying god, and with no one left to provide for his champion You must do so in his stead. You had only your mice, your panoply and Mars' blessing on hand, but hopefully that would be enough preparation for what would come.

Choose which gifts you would like to give the dying bear's Chosen. Due to a great deal of sympathy for Laughing Bear's position, the Enthusiasm cost for using the Sun's Panoply has been reduced. In addition, you may choose to grant a character more than one of the same item, but every such item after the first will provide only half its bonus, rounded down, and compounding. So 2 gifts would be +15, 3 gifts would be +17, 4 gifts would be +18, and 5+ would provide nothing more. After all, the Exalt that has one Daiklave is mighty, the Exalt that has five Daiklaves is just showing off at this point unless they somehow have 5 arms.

[][Gift] Your favorite familiars, the Mice of the Sun, are a rather sneaky bunch able to assassinate others with disease. You can easily lend one for a century or two. (Bonus to Sneak)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] You could always ask a favor from Mars, Maiden of Battles, to bless this Exigent in their fights. (One Reroll the first time that a Fight event would require Recovery, taking the higher result. ALSO guarantees that the SECOND event will be a Fight event.)

[][Gift] In this dire situation, perhaps more direct action could be taken. You shall allow this Exigent a singular use of your most divine panoply, to help them get on their feet. (Instead provides a +50 bonus to the FIRST event roll, bonus counts as part of natural die roll, will (SLIGHTLY) reduce the Enthusiasm gain for this Exigent.)

And finally, what would this child's name be?

[] Exigent's Name
[] Exigent's Appearance
[] Exigent's Anima Banner (should be bear-related)

Please write these votes in the form of a Plan.

Author's Note: Here we are with the last part of creation. Initially, I was going to use something else instead of Physical Strength again for this God, but considering that his blessing as stated in Across the Eight Direction IS a blessing of "a bear's strength," I felt that it was appropriate enough. But this will be the last time that Charm Theme is used... hopefully. That's also why it's the only Charm Theme with a revealed die effect, you all already know what it does at this point.

I can't wait to see how this goes (With whatever plan wins, I'm not assuming my plan will win)

Edit: Somehow I made them both a small kid and tall for their age, really need to figure out how I keep missing typos like this, it is ridiculous how much I space out while writing, btw also fixed the mistake

Alright, closing the vote now. I'm going to start doing the rolls now that I'm on break, so I'll make sure to double check for any mistakes later once I fully get off work. For now, Plan Bear Cub is our winner!

So, before we start with any of the rolls, let's clear up what our Charm Themes do this time, shall we?

Charm Themes:
  • Hibernation: The Exalt will be able to enter a healing coma, rapidly restoring from harm and halting aging while asleep. (Stamina)(Gained From Patron)(Effect: +20 to Recovery Rolls for Any Events, +40 if it's recovering from a Fight Event)
  • Physical Strength: The Exalt will have great physical strength (Strength)(Gained From Patron)(Effect: +10 Bonus to Fight Events)
  • Delirious Slumber: The Exalt can think and communicate with others while asleep... to a degree. (Charisma)(Gained From Situation)(Effect: +10 to a Lead/Sneak/Talk Event if it comes after a recovery roll
  • Poison Affinity: The Exalt can resist, identify, create and apply poisons well. (Charisma, Stamina, Strength)(Gained From Situation)(Effect: +10 to Events dealing with Poison)

Our Chosen of Bears is an interesting early attempt to mess around with the mechanics of the quest, able to better stave off old age through hibernation. Believe me when I say that it's going to lead to a Gift idea down the line. For now, let's get to those rolls!

Our first Event of course is a Talk event. Our Chosen is going to reveal Laughing Bear's death to the village chief, include all the details about the assassination he knows and try to persuade the Chief to pursue an investigation into the assassination.

Roll Bonuses: +20 (Focus), +10 (Poison)
Roll Result: 10 + 30 = 40... Aaaand we've already triggered a recovery roll. Good thing we're specked for it I guess.
Event 1 Recovery: 70 + 20 = 90, he recovers quickly and without issue.

The Chieftain hears his words, but decides not to drag his people into an investigation spurred on by a child's words. With little hope for getting support from higher up, the child Xylus must go his own way to search for answers.

Thankfully for him, Destiny intervenes, making the assassin a little impatient. The Assassin attacks this child in broad daylight!

Event 2: Fight (Guaranteed)
Roll Bonuses: +10 (Physical Strength), +10 (Poison)
Roll Results: 57 + 20 = 77, the assassin is fought off, though not killed, and people are alerted to its presence! It seems to be... Some kind of Demon?! Or maybe just something related to it...

Whatever manner of entity the assassin is, the boy can not allow Laughing Bear's killer to escape without justice. Xylus bids farewell to his parents, putting off his coming of age ceremony for years as he pursues the trail the assassin left behind.

Event 3: Sneak
Roll Bonuses: +15 (Gifts), +10 (Poison)
Roll Result: 77 + 25 = 102, and he manages to not just find the Assassin, but track it back to its later. It is indeed some kind of Demon, a Demon of Szoreny, summoned by an Exile of the Village who sought revenge against the place which casted him out for his crimes. With the help of some new rodent friends, Xylus is able to dispose of this sorcerer with the same ease as the sorcerer did Laughing Bear.

Now for the Bonus Events! Every Event after this point will have a +20 increase to the threshold triggering Recovery Rolls, as well as for the thresholds for the Recovery Rolls themselves. Yet, our boy Xylus here has a solution for that: Hibernation. While he can't easily avoid Recovery rolls by this point, he almost doesn't want to, since he can easily recover and gain bonuses from them.

In any case, like before I haven't assigned specific details or roll bonuses to what happens during these bonus events, but, if things go well, there's going to be a LOT of Talking in Xylus' future.

Event 4: Talk
Roll Bonuses: +20 (Main), +10 (Elder)
Roll Results: 49 + 30 = 70

Event 5: Fight
Roll Bonuses: +10 (Strength), +20 (Elder)
Roll Results: 73 + 30 = 103

Event 6: Talk
Roll Bonuses: +20 (Main), +30 (Elder)
Roll Results: 14 + 50 = 64, Recovery Triggered!
Event 6 Recovery Roll (DC 70): 18 + 20 = 38, Failure, Xylus' life ends here

Darn, I was hoping he'd roll better than that. The reason that the +20 Recovery bonus becomes a +40 from Fighting is because he heals wounds faster than anything else during Recovery. I guess that +10 bonus after Recovering isn't going to get used here. :(

With that done, the rolls are over! I will get to writing up the report next. Overall, a decent life for an Exalt that never expected to make it past a normal human lifespan.

Name: Xylus Molin
Patron: Laughing Bear, Bear God, Bestower of Gifts to Tindaro Village (DECEASED)
Power Level: Terrestrial
Caste Attributes: Charisma, Stamina, Strength
Martial Arts: Terrestrial keyword on all Martial Arts Styles EXCEPT for Bear Style; No Access to Sidereal Martial Arts
Sorcery and Necromancy: Ivory Circle Necromancy
Material Resonance: Moonsilver (Neutral), All Other Materials (Dissonant)

Appearance: As a kid, Xylus was a tiny youth with curly hair that could never be brushed straight, a result of his half-outsider heritage. Because of his frequent trips outside, he was often covered in dirt and mud. As he grew older, he, well... grew. Really, really grew, just like the Bear whose power he inherited. By the time he reached maturity, he was close to 7 feet in height, and many many pounds in weight.

Anima Banner: Xylus' Anima Banner begins as a lime green sheath surrounding his body. When it grows stronger, it develops into a dripping lime green aura, tapering off into silver at the top. When he was younger, his Totemic Display resembled 3 bear cubs cutely squeak at the world. As he grew, so did the bears, and thus now 3 green and silver bears of great size roar in defiance at his opposition.

Anima Effects:
  • Slumbering-Mind Delirium: While asleep, Xylus can still continue to perform Mental actions (except for Perception rolls) at a -2 penalty. His Charisma charms improve this effect further.
  • Blessing of Strength: By spending 5 motes, Xylus can touch a target to endow them with great strength, granting them +1 Strength dot for the duration of the scene. At Bonfire, this power becomes free and affects all allies within short range.
  • Storing the Caustic Drink: When Xylus suffers the effects of a poison, he can pay 10 motes, 1 willpower. That poison becomes added to his catalog of known poisons (Max Essence + 2). Whenever he encounters a known poison in the future, as long as he suffers its effects or can smell it, he automatically recognizes it as poison. His charms can improve this effect further.

God Background: Laughing Bear was a minor patron of the village of Tindaro. Though not the village's ultimate patron (that would be the river-goddess Yanae), he was a favorite of the people for his adoration of their children. During the winter, he would set up a challenge for the village youths: "The last to pluck my fur as I slumber and NOT wake me up will earn my strength until the next winter." Should a child wake up the bear, they would be scared away by a fearsome roar, but it was all part of the game, Laughing Bear would never chase after them or even harm them.

But one night, as he hibernated in his cave, an intruder came in. Bearing a blade coated in quicksilver sap, they plunged the knife into Laughing Bear's body. As deep into his hibernation as he was, the god could not physically awaken, but his mind awoke in a delirious state. Imprisoned within his corpus, his pain-addled mind delivered a prayer to the Most High, begging for a champion to help avenge the dying god.

Exigent Background:
Xylus Morin is a child of two worlds, raised by his Linowan mother and abandoned by his outsider father, who he would never meet. This abandonment was not voluntary, however, as his father was slain helping to protect the village from hostile soldiers, which helped to endear his memory to the rest of the village and ensured that Xylus' mother would not be looked down upon. Regardless, his mother had to rely upon her clan members to help provide for her and Xylus as he grew, and seeing this obligation at play created an obligation in Xylus in turn: While he would strive to be honest and true as all Linowan should, he would still do his best to keep a smile on his face, for his mother's sake.

That smile would eventually fall, as he, a youth of just 12 years, stumbled into Laughing Bear's cave in order to partake in the village tradition. There, he saw the weeping wound which leaked silver pus, the dagger still stuck into the god's side. Hesitantly approaching the god's position, Xylus touched Laughing Bear's hide, and that was enough to begin the process of transferring the bear's power into his new champion's vessel. As a lime green aura surrounded the child, his mind became overwhelmed with the delirious half-memories of the bear. Clutching the knife by the handle yet holding it as far from himself as he could, he ran out of the cave, his Anima Banner blazing as he cried out for the village chief.

Notable Events:
  • The chief of Tindaro, Erlaka, allowed the suddenly glowing youth to explain what had happened. His entry into the cave, noticing the tainted wound, the knife, and the transfer of power to Xylus. Even now, his words conveyed far more emotion and rhetoric than one would expect out of a mere child. At the end of his explanation, he asked the chieftan to round up the village's warriors and send out search parties to hunt down the assassin. "After all," he argued, "If they could take out Laughing Bear, what will stop them from killing the other gods of the village? What will stop the more vulnerable villagers from being silenced in the night?" Indeed, what could? The chieftan heard his words, his reasoning, his plea...

And denied his request. In the end, while she would not fault the youth for his need to avenge their patron, she had a responsibility for the village itself. If the village pursued this vendetta, sent out search parties to look for the assassin, what would stop those hunters from in-turn being poisoned and killed by the assassin? Or suffer some other dire fate while investigating? She could not risk it, despite Xylus' words. Erlaka felt for him, she really did, but she just could not risk it. Despondent that the children's favorite god would remain unavenged, he returned home to his mother, the tears of his eyes immediately spurring her to embrace him as he cried in frustration.
  • Yet, "Survival is Control," as the Maiden on the Shelf once said. And that principle would be demonstrated days later by its opposite. The assassin had not fled the village, instead having dematerialized and hiding in the shade of the trees nearby. When it heard that it's foul actions had been discovered, and as a random villager passed by near its location, it began to panic, growing desperate with a need to eliminate the loose ends. But this was no random villager that passed by, and the demon's fear (for that was what this creature indeed happened to be) was far from natural, as the inauspicious influence of the Banner, a constellation which should have had no effect on this outsider to reality, took hold. In its desperation, it rushed out from its hiding spot, materialized in broad daylight and attacked Xylus as he worked with his mother and several others to gather berries.

The demon's haste proved to be its downfall. For while Xylus was a mere youth, he was still Exalted, with a bear's strength forever in his grasp. With his bare hands he met the demon's charge, and grappled the monster down to the earth. There, he got a good look at its appearance: an insectoid... humanoid... thing covered with reflective chitin, its locust head chittering in fear. Tugging the creature's other knife away, he stabbed its tip rapidly into the demon's carapace, breaking through the protective exoskeleton and allowing its own poison to corrode its veins. Just as he was about to finish it off with its own weapon, Xylus paused as he realized that the demon's body now bled silver fluid around it. That was enough of an opening for the demon to dematerialize and escape, but unbeknownst to it, its immaterial form CONTINUED to bleed physical silver fluid, marking a bright trail as it went. If he could just follow the demon's trail, then he might be able to track it down to its layer.
  • Quickly bidding goodbye to his mother (who tried to stop him from running off, but didn't have the endurance to do so), he ran after the invisible spirit, following its mercury trail far out from the village territory. Eventually, after days of travel and foraging, he reached the outskirts of Linowan territory. The mercury trail ended there, yet the demon was nowhere to be found. Dissapointed that his one chance was gone, he moved to turn back when he heard a squeak behind him. There behind him were two mice, both covered in white fur with golden sun sigils on their back. Talking as if they were not mere rodents, they explained that they had been sent as a gift from the Unconquered Sun to help Xylus avenge Laughing Bear's death and track down the culprit. They explained that, as far as they could tell, the demon had been sent back to the Demon City by its master, who did not want a wounded servant at their disposal. But to do so, the sorcerer had to have been close by, and their scent could still be found in the region. There was still a trail.

With all due haste, the three of them pursued the new lead, heading further and further outside of Linowan territory. Eventually, the scent markers lead to a mountain cave. Inside, they found bloody sigils strewn about, painted by its infernal artist further inside. The man in question had only one arm, which carried in its grasp a leather-bound tome. It seems that tonight he was in-between summons, meaning that they had a window of opportunity before another demon would be around to potentially detect them. Still, Xylus hesitated. Even at his age, he could already tell that stopping this man from summoning more would require at minimum grievously wounding him, if not killing him outright. Xylus was 12, he had barely killed rabbits before, let alone another man! Sensing his hesitation, the two mice who brought him here looked at each other, and offered a way out: They would handle stopping this sorcerer, a task no child should ever have to endure. Xylus would just... wait outside, until it was over.

To the child's lingering shame, he did so. He sat outside the cave's entrance and fell into a very brief hibernation, exhausted from this constant search as the two mice went further in and bit the ankles of the sorcerer. With their teeth, they endowed him with a legendary curse: The Solar Plague, the bane of nations, which slays the unvirtuous as easily as a fire boils a pot of water. By isolating Xylus outside, they were able to ensure that he would not accidentally contract the disease as well before it ran its course through the sorcerer's body. By the time he woke up a week later, and ravenously hungry, all he found was a collection of nuts and berries, the two mice and a dead body covered in the worst boils imaginable.

Stifling his vomit, Xylus did his best to eat the provided fare, before lifting the body (which was no longer contagious) and carrying it with his supernatural vigor. Without a word, his newfound companions followed after him. Without a word, he resolved to himself: He would not allow others to fight his battles for him. He could not allow himself to be that weak anymore. Yet, his better nature still shined through: He also resolved to himself that he would be no deciever, and no tyrant, that he would serve as an exemplar of compassion and strength for others. In that moment, high above, the Unconquered Sun knew that he had made the right choice with this one.

After a long period of traveling, Xylus returned to his village, unharmed and still carrying around the perpetrator's corpse. With the two mice on his shoulder, he was easily able to get the attention of the village's major goddess Yanae, and with her vouching he was able to tell the tale of Laughing Bear's death and how it was finally avenged. Speaking with the chieftan once more, Erlaka recognized the man in question: An exile from the tribe, who had tried to use demonic arts to slay his rival in love. For that, he had one hand removed and a brand placed upon his face to alert all of his untrustworthy nature. With the sorcerer's death, the bear god had been avenged, and Xylus could return to a more normal life.
  • Uncommon to most Exalted of the Second Age, Xylus was able to spend the next several decades without incident, living a peaceful life. He grew great in stature, a mountain of a man who was even stronger than he looked. He married Erlaka's daughter, a political move to secure this newfound asset, but thankfully their relationship did turn to love with time. He was able to while away his years raising his children until they too had reached adulthood and sought to marry. It was only they had left the metaphorical nest that the Exigent turned his sights back onto his own ambitions.

The Linowan people treasure excellence, and hosted regular competitions to demonstrate their prowess. Those who demonstrate mastery of their respective crafts become nobility and are awarded artifact masks to show off to all their expertise. Xylus, being a rather humble sort, did not pursue much of these competitions while he was young, because he knew the result. For a Chosen like him, winning at unarmed combat (as he had become a master of Bear Style by this point in time) or rhetoric would have been easy, almost like cheating. Instead, he waited until he had no more obligations left to worry about before finally pursuing his noble title. Eventually, a summons came from the holy city of Rubylak, asking that he come to the High Queen's court to be tested for his skill in speech.

Donning a grey hood (for none may enter Rubylak with their face uncovered), he set out, arriving after days of continuous travel to the city. There, before the High Queen, he was tested in not just speech, but every skill he had at his disposal. His ability to weave stories, his endurance, his prowess in martial arts, and finally his experience with creating poisons, much as he left that last skill to the wayside for a reason. In the end however, it was his ability as an orator where he proved his mastery best, and in honor of deceased Laughing Bear, a bear mask made from redwood bark was created for Xylus' face. He returned to his village with honors, his noble status ensured.
  • As Xylus grew ever older, his beard turning from brown to white, he began to hibernate much like his patron did at times. Even when he did not slumber, winters would make him sluggish and unenthused. Still, in the remaining seasons he would instruct students in Bear Style and in speechcraft. One year, a royal in another village, Sitlaki, famed for her own mastery of the commonly practiced Bear Style, made an announcement: Any may come and challenge her for her position if they can demonstrate a greater mastery of the style compared to any other competitor, the royal herself included. This was a common practice and, indeed, a requirement of being a member of the royalty for the Linowan people, for those who bear the title of "Royal" must back it up with mastery in several fields. Challenges thus were frequent, and transfers of power just as frequent. Advised by his wife that he should go for it while he still had the chance, Xylus would enter the tournament as well to prove his prowess despite his more advanced age.

The tournament was filled with nobles eager to demonstrate their skill with the martial art. Yet Xylus was the Bear Embodied. He was not merely the Chosen of Bears, but a master of Bear Style's intricacies, with only a Solar or Sidereal able to gainsay his skill in the art. He easily demolished his competitors, landing devastating punches, strikes and headbutts. Once a rival was grappled by him, there was no chance of escape. Even when he reached the end where the royal herself was waiting, he outmatched her in every degree: Size, Strength, Skill, no facet of the art was she superior to him. In the end, she gladly gave up her royal raiment to the master, and he would bear (pun intended) his rewards and accomplishments back to his village, honoring his family further in the process.
  • But while Xylus was a man of great physicality, his preference was always towards diplomacy. So it was that when a Circle of Exalted known as the Electrum Flames (made up of Solars and Lunars) came to the Linowan lands to assert their authority, he was part of the ensemble assembled to greet them and forestall any attempts at conquering. By this point, Xylus' age was catching up to him. He very easily could have delayed his aging further by frequent hibernation, but he had no desire to outlive his grandchildren. Instead, knowing that his end would soon come to him, he participated in the event with as much energy as he could muster. If it came down to it, he would be ready to lay down his life to protect everyone else in the diplomatic party from harm.

It was a near thing. One of the Solars, a Dawn Caste, was filled with ambition and thought the Linowan an easy people to subjugate and turn into an army for his other goals. Yet Xylus patience and stubbornness won out in the end. He could not threaten the Solar, as that would just make him excited and eager to spill blood, so instead he proved a mountain which could not be overcome. Without any hint of rising anger, he countered the other Celestial's points before eventually the Circle simply gave up to go elsewhere. Decades after Xylus' death they would return, stronger and more prepared to take over the region, but his words bought his people precious time to prepare and debate on what to do. As for the Bear himself, he would spend the rest of his days alone with his wife in simple happiness.

The second Exigent's life has been detailed! For this act of compassion, YOU the Unconquered Sun have gained:

+10 Enthusiasm (New Total: 20)
+20 Effort (New Total: 20)

"I hope Jack and Gus enjoyed this excursion."

New Gift Ideas Unlocked!

[Gift] Though a Peach of Immortality was out of the question, you could certainly afford to give someone a regular supply of Age-Staving Cordial, lengthening their short lifespans. (Grants +10 retroactively to a character's Lifespan roll)
  • Gained for creating a character with a mortal lifespan.

[Gift] It might be possible to create a draught which can place the drinker into a deep, regenerative sleep. You will commission the creation of such post-haste. (Grants +10 to recovery rolls, +20 for Fight recovery rolls)
  • Gained for creating a character that could hibernate.

[Gift] After observing many cases of how superhuman strength could help an Exigent out, you decided to grant the subject an amulet which emulated the least of these effects. (Grants +10 Fight)
  • Gained for creating multiple Exigents with Superhuman Strength.
  • Explicitly stacks with Artifact Weaponry without penalty. However, further Fight Gifts will provide only a +2 bonus (then +1, then none) if both this and Artifact Weaponry are used.

[Gift] You could always ask a favor from Venus, Maiden of Serenity, to bless this Exigent's tongue in... more ways than one. (One Reroll the first time that a Talk event would require Recovery, taking the higher result. ALSO guarantees that the SECOND event will be a Talk event.)
  • "Oh, he and his wife were just so CUTE together. And the way he satisfied her, mmmmm.... Juicy."
  • Gained for fulfilling one of the following conditions:
    • Rolling poorly multiple times in Talk events with a character focused on them. (Check!)
    • Needing to recover after a Talk event dealing with an Enemy of Fate.
    • Rolling poorly multiple times in Talk events against Enemies of Fate.

Author's Note: And Xylus Morin is now done! I probably could have added a few more names for characters here and there, but this was getting pretty long already.

In any case, I'm looking at slightly changing how the Elder bonus for die rolls works (though I still used the old system here). Instead of just gaining the bonus for every event past the soft limit, the Exalt would instead need to make it past 5 events total to start acrruing the bonus. While this would hurt those Exigents that have human lifespans, it would reward those that can live for millennia, as they would be able to gain greater power more easily. Plus, it's technically more accurate considering how hard it is to get past Essence 3 for most Exalted. Still, I'm open for debate here.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me. And I'm going to get started on writing Turn 3... tomorrow. Definitely tomorrow, it's getting late here.

Somewhat mediocre as Exalts go but honestly I can't help respecting Xylus. He lived a fairly humble life but achieved peace, love, and family. It was not a grandiose adventure nor a legend that will endure til the end of time, but he succeeded in his mission and life as well.

Though to be honest, I am still really hoping we can roll an Exaltation that lasts indefinitely. Hopefully one of the weirder ones just so that there can be an Exigent of the God of Socks that randomly pops up every century or so or something along those lines.

Anima Banners, How They Look, and Inspiration New
Can you provide some Exigent Anima Banner examples so we might know what they should look like?
Sure! Using the four examples we have in canon (I'm not including the Apocryphals, because they're not actually Exigents), you have a few varieties.

There are 3 stages to an active Anima Banner per 3e rules (I'm not including Dim, because that's just the default "No Glow right now"): Glowing, where an Exalt has a glowing outline surrounding them (usually a single color here), and sometimes a glowing mark on their forehead. Burning, where the Exalt gets a big, full-on Dragon Ball Z power aura, often with multiple colors mixed in. The Anima Banner's light at this point can often have minor environmental effects, like Solar Animas being full-on sunlight that slightly warms things. Finally, the Bonfire / Iconic stage, where the Exalt's aura becomes a visible object of some kind. Usually something like an animal, an object of importance, nature, etc. These "Iconic" displays technically speaking only last for brief moments when they spend more Essence, for most of the time its the Bonfire level, which just looks like the Burning Anima but much bigger, visible for miles away.

With that being said, here are the canon examples of Exigents and their Animas that we have:

  • Strawmaiden Janest, the canonical possibility for what Ten Sheaves could have created, doesn't have a listed Glowing Stage. Her Burning Stage involves a bright conglomeration of wheat-gold, soil-brown, grass-green and the white of the noonday sun. Her Iconic Stage has a few possibilities depending on the player: A giant Strawmaiden with a Scythe (depicting Janest herself idealized), an effigy of Ten Sheaves, endless rows of wheat stalks, or powerful beasts of burden like oxen.
  • The Puppeteer, the Chosen of the Marionette-Puppet God Karana, starts as a Glowing colorless vibration. At the Burning stage, it becomes a shifting web of strings with shades of silver, black, white and violet. Once it gets to Iconic, there's a few possibilities, again based on player choice: A towering spider pulling strings, a phantasmal applauding audience, a mass of entangled silhouettes, etc.
  • The Architects of Wun Ja vary wildly depending on what City they are based in. They always Glow and Burn in the colors of their city's flags, popular sites and/or iconography. They also typically include sounds and scents common to the city. The possibilities for their Iconic display are literally so varied that I can't provide them.
  • My personal favorite Exigents, the Sovereigns of Uluiru, are unique when it comes to this: They actually have 4 active Anima stages. They Glow and Burn with the colors of the aurora, predominated with the gem-color which matches their Aspect: Pure White for Diamonds, Deep Green for Emeralds, A cloudy mix of the other four colors for Opals, Blood Red for Rubys and Bright Blue for Sapphires. Their Iconic Displays always have some manner of aurora and/or gem association, whether that be a crystal giant version of themselves, a garda bird in all the aurora's colors, a whirlwind of gem shards, etc. But it is their special Transcendent Anima Banners where the Iconic Display not only becomes permanently active (not reverting to the boring Bonfire pillar of light as is normal), even larger, even brighter and oftentimes even fancier.
I know that's not as many examples as you might want, but a lot of these Exigents are crafted for player choice, so there's a large selection of choices of what could be. Hence why I'm often vague with what the Anima Banner should be related to.

The Third Exigent: Part 1 New
You are Ignis Divine, Sol Incarnate, known to some as "Boss" but better known to all as the Unconquered Sun. And while You are contemplating your next move, You are simultaneously contemplating the offer which Mars and soon after Venus made towards You. Because after the favor You asked of Mars, she was apparently inspired and wanted to know if You could... temper your next Exigent request in a way that was more to her liking. Venus, meanwhile, just wants to get in on the apparent fad.

They were not the only ones to make a request of You. A "frequent customer" as it were, Wun Ja, Goddess of the Shining Metropolis (a.k.a. All Mortal Cities Ever) has asked You to help create another one of her Architects again. On the one hand, this was the rare case You were willing to be a bit more transactional with the spark of Exigence, considering how many times the two of You have done this. On the other... how many of these Architects had she made by now? It's at least a couple dozen, and You know that every Exigent made requires some degree of sacrifice on the god's part, even if she pays only a tiny amount. How much of her power is potentially left to keep doing this?

Regardless, You have a choice now: Whether to keep doing things as You please, or to listen to one of these requests instead.

You have unlocked Requests! Requests are optional "Missions" of a sort that you can choose, which will limit your options for choosing what to do with an Exigent in exchange for a potential reward. What is that reward? You almost never know for sure, but you'll get a hint. You can only take one at a time obviously, and they can sometimes have Gift requirements that you will need to keep in mind.

[][Request] You will keep doing your own thing, as you usually do.
  • You will have no restrictions for your next Exigent.
[][Request] Mars' Request: She wants a General. A Great General. A very, very impressive general that can lead a bunch of soldiers, wield mighty weapons, do kung fu, what next does she want them to have a magic horse? Regardless, she is offering to provide a free Blessing for the General.
  • Your next Exigent MUST have Lead be their Main Focus.
  • Your next Exigent MUST have at least 1 Gift enhancing Lead, and at least 1 Gift enhancing Fight.
  • Your next Exigent will benefit from Mars' Blessing for free.
  • Reward: Something to do with her Chosen? (Battles)
[][Request] Venus' Request: She wants a Diplomat, someone that can unite hearts and nations. She... might just be looking for another bedmate, assuming the Exigent proves interesting enough, but regardless you can see the sense in it.
  • Your next Exigent MUST have Talk be their Main Focus.
  • Your next Exigent MUSt have at least 1 Gift enhancing Talk, and at least 1 Gift enhancing Sneak.
  • Your next Exigent will benefit from Venus' Blessing for free.
  • Reward: Something to do with her chosen? (Serenity)
[][Request] Wun Ja is once again asking you for a spark of Exigence. This will create yet another Architect to help protect Creation's cities from harm. Yet... How many times is she willing to keep doing this?
  • You CANNOT choose another God for this request.
  • Character WILL be Terrestrial-level, as all Architects are.
  • Character will have some defined traits, but others can be adjusted if you so choose.
  • As this is a known phenomenon, you will learn what the Architect Charm Themes are, and what bonuses they provide for the dice starting with Part 2.
  • Reward: Her Blessing?

For now, You can instead prepare yourself for the next time a potential Exigent captures your attention. After all, it was best to be prepared for any potential gifts ahead of time, rather than on the spot.

How much Effort would You devote at this time to purchasing such Gifts?

Effort Available: 20

You may spend as much Effort as you like this turn, up to the amount you have available. You may purchase a Gift any number of times, unless otherwise stated. You may also choose to save your Effort, but if you spend none, you will have no gifts to give for this next Exigent.

[][Gift] You will not trouble yourself with coming up with any gifts this turn. (0 Effort, invalidates other options)

[][Gift] You had quite a collection of artifact weapons from millennia of gifts just lying around, they could be better used to help someone else. (+10 Bonus to Fight)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] After observing many cases of how superhuman strength could help an Exigent out, you decided to grant the subject an amulet which emulated the least of these effects. (+10 Bonus to Fight)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] While you could not assign a Celestial Lion to assist this Exigent, you do know of a minor god who can serve as an assistant. (+10 Bonus to Lead)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[]Gift] You are the God of Perfection, and that must include Perfect Education as well. You will use a mote of your power to grant the Exigent greater knowledge. (+10 Bonus to Make)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] Your favorite familiars, the Mice of the Sun, are a rather sneaky bunch able to assassinate others with disease. You can easily lend one for a century or two. (+10 Bonus to Sneak)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] By your will, you shall grant this Exigent a personal ray of light, invisible to all but spirits who will look upon them with your favor. (+10 Bonus to Talk)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] It might be possible to create a draught which can place the drinker into a deep, regenerative sleep. You will commission the creation of such post-haste. (Grants +10 to recovery rolls, +20 for Fight recovery rolls)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] You could easily craft a sun emblem out of cold iron, the better to remind the Fae that you were Creation's ultimate defender. (+10 to events involving creatures of the Wyld)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] You had quite the garden in your Sanctum-Palace, but more importantly you had quite the store of sunflower seeds, which could grow rapidly in even the worst conditions. (+10 to events involving agriculture)(5 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] Though a Peach of Immortality was out of the question, you could certainly afford to give someone a regular supply of Age-Staving Cordial, lengthening their short lifespans. (Grants +10 retroactively to a character's Lifespan roll)(10 Effort)
-[] How many?

[][Gift] You could always ask a favor from Venus, Maiden of Serenity, to bless this Exigent's tongue in... more ways than one. (One Reroll the first time that a Talk event would require Recovery, taking the higher result. ALSO guarantees that the SECOND event will be a Talk event.)(10 Effort, Can only hold 1 of these in storage at a time.)

[][Gift] You could always ask a favor from Mars, Maiden of Battles, to bless this Exigent in their fights. (One Reroll the first time that a Fight event would require Recovery, taking the higher result. ALSO guarantees that the SECOND event will be a Fight event.)(10 Effort, Can only hold 1 of these in storage at a time.)

Please write all of your votes together in the form of a Plan.

Author's Note: *Squints at clock* ...Technically not tomorrow, but it's close enough to midnight, so... Well, I guess I got a problem now.

Anyway, the requests here are inspired of course by Long Founding's requests, adapting a little to this slightly different system. Requests are not something you HAVE to do, I don't want to squash your interests in other character types too much, but if you want to pursue those rewards then feel free! Technically speaking, the Unconquered Sun probably wouldn't listen to any outside force (barring Wun Ja, who's a special case), but I felt that having Requests will help spice up some of our future Exigents.

In any case, now that this is out, and I've broken my promise of being responsible with my time management, feel free to vote! I'm off to bed, so it might be a while before I can answer any questions.

I want to do a request, just to see what we would get, but we just did a sneaky diplomat so why not have another crack at a general? The reason for talk is that allies are nice to have especially in the Second Age.

That sounds good, maybe we can do the walrus God's request next, that was pretty popular during the last vote, and the talking bonus would be nice for gathering followers
