[X] Clan Ogaren - "I am of the Ogaren, the spirits makers of Dunfearn and those who still claim the blood of Tharbad as their own". Effects: Adds Dragon's Breath to Character Skills, Adds Literate to Character Skills, Adds Primitive Alchemy to Character Skills.
[X] Yes - You will go with this Thorongil south at winter's end, to hunt and search for distant kindred at the behest of the Straw-Heads.
Alright, so I think there's a lot being overlooked with this choice and the bonuses from the Ewen are rather superficial.
So first off: this option starts us out literate - the benefit of this really can't be overstated. There are great libraries and stores of written knowledge in Middle-Earth and the library of Gondor is likely to be one of the available ones to us with the Thorongil option.
Then there's our primitive alchemy skill. I'd like you all to take a moment to consider that Aragorn is quite well versed in the elven healing arts and due in part to being a ranger has good understanding of wildlife and herbs. Going with him, we're likely to pick up quite a bit of it, especially with the not quite as martial background, not to mention Saruman is pretty into that as well.
The mid/long term goal of this quest is to make a Dunlending kingdom and I believe these skills would be far more useful for doing that successfully, especially considering Aragorn will be sure to impart at least a respectable skill with weapons upon us, which in the end is probably only capped by our own choice on how much time we're putting to improving it.
The option also grants us a link to Tharbad, a quite well situated town that enjoyed prosperity in years past, but is currently in major decline, if not already abandoned. Located on two sides of a ford with a great bridge (in disrepair). When repaired would very well turn into the main connection between the North and South. Would make an ideal capital.
Also, did I mention we could
breath bloody fire?! If that doesn't convince anyone, I don't know what would
On the note of Ewen, it grants a decent starting weapon and a bonus against Misty Mountains dwellers, the latter which is of more note, but I find it a bit lacking in scope when compared to the alternatives.
The Numenorean option is obviously a strong pick, but personally I'd rather we clawed our way to the top without the blood of the Ubermensch.
