I'm surprised there isn't a thread for this film already. Er, wait...

Anyway.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ Shutting Down Production as Letitia Wright Recovers From On-Set Injury (Exclusive)

The movie had spent the last two months shooting around the injured actress.
Wright was injured in late August while the film was shooting a sequence involving a stunt rig on-location in Boston. At the time, Marvel Studios said Wright's injury would ultimately not impact the shooting schedule of the film.

After the injury, Wright left for London, where the star has been since.

... Director Ryan Coogler is said to have shot all footage that his crew is able to without Wright.

Sources say the production is taking the hiatus to reconfigure the shoot to get things back on track for an early 2022 restart. The shutdown is expected to begin the week of Thanksgiving.

Marvel already pushed back the release of Wakanda Forever in October, moving it from July 8, 2022, to Nov. 11, 2022. At this time, insiders say, that new release date remains intact.

"Reconfigure the shoot" is PR talk that can cover a host of things...including moving the production to London at short notice to complete the thing. The money-men and their accountants will be screaming, of course, but, well... 🤷‍♂️

Do we really NEED a new thread for every sequel?

Rumors are they're gonna CGI Chadwick which.... I dunno. Seems disrespectful?

Heard some fun rumors such as whether the next panther would be T'challa junior or M'baku taking the reign

I would not be suprised if Wright had recovered but doesn't want to return to the set unless she got exemptions for her anti-vax beliefs, and Disney in turn scrapping plans of having her be BP full-time and instead use Winston Duke with the delay being to rewrite the script to accomendate the changes.

If it's for a brief goodbye/death scene with him delivering some pre-recorded lines from Chadwick just so the movie doesn't open with a rubber double in a casket with a handwave it happened offscreen, that doesn't seem disrespectful.

Now if a CG Chadwick stuck around for most of the movie, that would be going too far and ghoulish.

Not sure if I like that idea. I view the MCU M'Baku as the Grimlock to T'Challa's Optimus Prime and having him assume the BP mantle sounds weird.

I honestly think it would be better not for there to be a single successor but make it a team effort instead.

‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ to Resume Filming Next Week With Letitia Wright

The actor, who was injured in August, will be back on set in Atlanta.
Production was initially to have restarted last Monday but was delayed thanks to several cast and crew, Lupita Nyong'o among them, testing positive for COVID-19. Shooting is due to resume in Atlanta next week on the Ryan Coogler-directed picture for what sources say will be about four weeks.

... While not commenting on [Wright's] vaccinated status, several sources say those issues have been resolved.

Wright's agent also did not comment, only telling The Hollywood Reporter, "She always intended to return but just needed to wait until she had fully recovered."

Separately, sources say Winston Duke, who plays M'Baku, negotiated a hefty raise for his return to Black Panther due to what is being described as an expanded role in the Panther mythos. What that expansion looks like is unclear.

Marvel had no comment.

I'mma bet that Wright is still being an idiot about getting vaccinated. Frankly I think they should just recast her at this point, how are you supposed to believe a super-genius being played by someone who thinks vaccines are the work of the devil?

It might just be because I'm an optimist, but I wouldn't be that shocked to see she was quietly reminded about how much money she stood to lose and just got vaccinated. Monetary incentive has been shown to be powerful in motivating even anti-vax nutjobs to get it on the down low while whining the whole time.

She will never ever admit she did so, but I'd bet she did.

I'm taking a different tack, and thinking the "won't get vaccinated" story is cover for her being much more badly injured than anyone is willing to admit.

I'm thinking back on all the euphemistic statements on various productions that were cover for "Oh hahaha, we nearly killed our actress. Oh well, She's going to get nearly full mobility back eventually. Maybe. Anyway, let us distract you with this amusing anecdote!"

The 'She was way more injured then initially thought' explanation has thus far been the official story put out by Disney as to why she hasn't returned, because saying your lead actress is a zealot antivaxxer who's refusing to return to is a lot more embarassing then nearly killing her.

Yeah nearly killing an actress is pretty much par for course in the industry at this point.

Daniel Kaluuya Not Returning for ‘Black Panther 2’

Daniel Kaluuya will not be reprising his role as W'Kabi in "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever," Variety has confirmed.
Jacqueline Coley of Rotten Tomatoes first tweeted out the news on Wednesday, writing that Kaluuya confirmed in an interview that he could not be in "Black Panther 2" due to scheduling conflicts with Jordan Peele's upcoming horror film "Nope."

Representatives for Kaluuya did not immediately respond to Variety's request for comment.

Production on "Wakanda Forever," directed by Ryan Coogler, wrapped in March, and the film is set to release on Nov. 11.

Man is there a more cursed movie? I mean I'm rooting for Coogler but man is the deck stacked against him.

Saw someone posting a rumoured plot leak on SB. Take it with a container load of salt, but the basic gist was:
A science team in the ocean is using a device developed by Riri Williams to look for a new source of vibranium, get attacked by Namor who than goes after Riri who takes shelter in Wakanda that subsequently gets attacked by Atlantis.

T'Challa by that time has died of illness, Shuri creates an artificial heart-shaped herb to contact her brother in the afterlife but instead is met by Killmonger who advises her on how to be the new Black Panther. Her mom is killed during a flooding of Wakanda, but eventually Namor is beaten and peace is brokered between the two nations.

Nakia reveals to Shuri she had a secret son from when she was still dating T'Challa, and it's implied the science team who started all this were working for Doctor Doom. The secret son bit personally seems interesting, considering the current Black Panther comic has been actively shitting on T'Challa/the Black Panther Clan lineage being no longer fit to rule and protect Wakanda, and introducing a teenage hero named Tosin to replace him.

I'd buy it, I've seen a fuckton of concept art of Atlantis/Namor (it's got a very Aztec/Mesoamerica vibe, presumably the "New World" to Wakanda's "Old World"), AIUI it's not called Atlantis but something else in Nahuatl.

Other rumor I've heard persistently is that Shuri takes the lead as a Black Panther over the course of the film, but that M'Baku gets the official job by the end of the film (given that Letitia Wright has some, uh, interesting views it's not surprising that the Mouse is gun shy about pushing her to the fore).

I also heard that rumor. But
MCU´s M´Baku works better as the Grimlock to Black Panther´s Optimus Prime.

I'm bad at keeping up with actor's views, what does she have that'd make Disney hesitate about letting her step up to the plate?

She's a hardcore anti-vaxxer (along with a smattering of climate change denial, transphobia, and some general "China did COVID" JAQ'ing off), to the point of getting dropped by her original PR team because (allegedly) she wouldn't shut up about it on set.

You can read about it here, it's a bag fumble up there with Gina Carano's.

Wow didn't even know about the other stuff.

Also recall she refused to be vaccinated and due to living in the UK, she couldn't get on a plane to return to the set in the US thus massively disrupting the shoot and delaying it by several months because they already shot everything they could without her and she's the main character.

Thus making me believe the bit about them setting up a replacement to her, as both a back-up and a warning.
