Casca's finally going to be a character again instead of an angst prop. Didn't think I'd see that in my lifetime.

Uh question is this the place to talk about berserk fanfic stuff or do I have the wrong place? Haven't been here in a while and trying to navigate my way around

So the new chapter just dropped.

Oh wow Casca looks beautiful.

*Turns to last page*

OH NO!!! D:

I'm rereading berserk, and Guts is a lot less stoic then I remember. He's inspired so many stoic brooding characters in other manga, so it's kind of surprising how emotive he is. He sneers, and jeers and laughed and rages. His a man a gigantic mirths and larger melancholies.

Also massive shout out for the armor in this manga. It's crazy how intricate, detailed and realistic it is. I really appreciate that from a historical standpoint

That's one of the major reasons why I like Berserk and Guts as a character. At first glance, he seems like an average brooding, stoic, Anti-Hero that he's inspired.

Then you actually look at it and see that it isn't the case at all. He's actually pretty emotional....albeit after the Eclipse his primary emotion was RAGE to mask the INCREDIBLE AMOUNTS OF PAIN he felt inside.

Yeah, even early on, the fact that he is borderline in tears after riling up the Slug Count's daughter so that she finds the will to live by hating him tells a lot about his character.

I fell in love with Berserk hard and early and the panel of Guts being on the verge of tears right after his edgy "come at me when you're ready" speech (as well as how he instinctively thrust out the Dragonslayer to save her from falling despite an equally edgy dismissal of her suicidally distraught emotional state earlier) was what cinched it for me.

And while the useage of sexual violence in Berserk is hardly flawless (fuck Wyald fuck trolls and fuck the daka) the fact that Guts is himself a rape victim and it's treated with the utmost seriousness and allows him and Casca to finally grow closer through recognising each other's trauma and hardship is pretty neato.

Also the fact that like, you can visibly see the Band of the Hawk making Guts a happier and more well-adjusted person before Griffith goes and does nothing wrong ever ruins everything so you understand why this man is so goddamn motherfucking A N G E R Y all the time post-Eclipse.

For all the faults I've come to recognise in Berserk, there is a reason why it captured my imagination, and the imaginations of so many others.

I'm in fact disappointed that Wyald wasn't included in the Golden Age movies, tacky as he was:D.

Heresy. Berserk is without flaws :p.
Updating pace excepted, of course:V.

Credit where its due I'm quite like how Griffith acts in this one.

Mostly because he's subtly horrible in a way the readers can pick up on but those around him are so swept up by his charisma they don't notice.

Like during a discussion of what should be done and how the Falconia budget should be allocated, the princess puts forward a kindhearted suggestion to try and deal with all the orphans running around by setting up some dedicated orphanages. The ministers think its a nice idea but say that the budget is stretched to thin for them to be doing charity right now.

Griffith cuts in and supports the idea of helping the orphans but rather than go with what the Princess suggested he after a speech about survival and progress basically says that all children regardless of family status are to be made wards of the state and indoctrinated into the countries viewpoint. When one minster rightfully points out that parents aren't going to be happy with their kids being taken away from them Griffith just replies that they can placate the peasants with their kids getting a solid meal and returning them after a period of time, selling it as education.

Then he goes on to address the issue of immigrants He points out that the current setup could potentially promote discrimination so his solution is to have every person who wants to come into Falconia be conscripted into the army for a mandatory 10 years of service, with the bribe that if they survive ten years of campaigns the conscripts will be made citizens of Falconia and could maybe be given some basic housing in the city itself.

It's freaky how what he says seems nice and progressive, concerned for future issues and covering stuff like child welfare, discrimination etc and this lasts right until you look at what he's actually ordering done and all the super unpleasant undertones come into focus.

Especially interesting is the way he plays being savior. A lot of what he says isn't objectionable, but it gets twisted as empire building, all, in the end, for the sake of Griffith being the one savior of humanity. Otherwise, I noticed a lot of what he said was just modernization in terms of ideology. "Turn refugees and immigrants to conscripts with the guarantee of citizenship" also follows historical examples, albeit in a different way. Above all, he's adopting a recognizably assimilationist ideology. Asides, he's formed a popular movement to turn his State into an enlightenment age european empire.
