Beneath Celestial Depths (An Arpeggio of Blue Steel Quest)

Calm down. You don't even know IC or OOC about the current state of the world. We know what we're doing.
As far as the state of the world, it's not that hard to reasonably guess.
We voted for two factions at the start. Those two factions were the closest to the finish line before our protagonist went under, so they and humanity* are the obvious top dogs after we went under.
Now one has to look at the world of AOBS, and the nature of the Fleet of Fog/Crimson Fleet's war.
Ideologically, the Admiralty Code's original vision, whatever it was, is dead. Now there is only cooperation or one party's enslavement of the other.**
It's a Total War. And Total War is won by economics.
With global trade gone and the limited resources of conventional construction/nanomaterials, the side which has more resources will inevitably win the conflict by replacing their losses and fielding more forces than the other sides.

With the combination of all parties involved not accepting anything but their own ideology and said parties' limited resources, the war can only have ended in two sides being conquered and repurposed or exterminated by the other. Anything else would be akin to the Allied powers allowing Nazi Germany or Imperial Japan to continue to exist after their defeat.

*Because, to give a cynical/optimistic view, they're your favorite faction/let you get creative with designing things.
**Because you also got a ton of milage out of Blue Steel going genocide-happy in the last quest.
Quite a lot has happened to make things work out this way: It'll make far more sense as you learn more.
That is what I am hoping for. That, and this all be a good story.
200 years is a long time to develop new technology too. Especially with design children still being made. It is a priority to learn what is happening politically and technology wise without anybody knowing we are alive until we want them to. Especially with the news that a union core has been reprogrammed.
Yeah. Habbie might very well end up being obsolete by this world's standards.

Huh, so that means Gunzo is dead, well barring an anime miracle that is, I did not see that coming. I thought at most he'd be an old man sitting next to a young Iona. But yeah state of the world is a big mystery, my bet is that it's a rather divided faction orientated world. Lots of different groups trying to get on top or simply get by, and the weaker are forced to be something like vassals under the stronger groups. That also means a wide variety of standards of living some are on the bleeding edge of technology, while others have to scavenge.
Gunzou did get sunk by Kongou, and is currently being 'repaired' by her in the manga so it's entirely possible that Gunzou's now some kind of Human-Nanomaterial Hybrid like his old man.

Yeah. Habbie might very well end up being obsolete by this world's standards.
This would be such an amazing twist.

I love it.

Eventually, you're forced to accept your results: It's been about 200 years. You're having trouble getting an exact date, but...it's at least the mid-2200s.
Fucking hell.

Well, for all we know Mankind has assimilated Fogtech already and improved it to the point that normal Fog!BBs now have Yamato-tier processing power.

Which makes Surcouf less of a speshul snooflak.

That explains the Insane difficulty, I suppose.

Oh, I would hate it. If I was there for the difficulty vote I would have gone for insane because A). I like a challenge. And B). We got something out of it. Right now we can't access the assimilated core meaning time and effort has to be put into it. If it's obsolete then unlocking it seems pointless and a waste of time, but I doubt that's the case the gm's wouldn't pull a dick move like that.

Indeed. If the payoff is getting 2200's tech... that just achieves parity. So our new core must somehow be able to synch with this new tech and make something greater than the sum of its parts, better than everyone else's tech, for the endgame payoff to be true.

"You know how we said there would be some massive payoff at the end for taking this difficulty? We lied, enjoy your Dark Souls Torch Run Quest."

Little message from all three QMs incoming:
We don't appreciate the insinuations that we lied or tricked you about the nature of Insane mode.

Thank you.

Apologies for my behaviour.

I really did mean it when I said I'd love such a twist. The idea of thinking we're the biggest thing around, and then being humbled really did spark my interest. I didn't mean to insult you and the others, I'm sorry for coming across as rude.

It'd be a good twist for a fanfic, but we're not in the business of tricking the players of our quests about a basic premise of the quest.
It'd be good for a laugh, but it's also good for making players jump ship, and that's not the desired outcome here.
So apology accepted. It's just that some people were starting to take that idea a little too seriously, and this isn't the first rodeo of any of the QMs. Lines of thought like that are best corrected early, in our experience.

200 years? Okay, I really don't trust brute-forcing this, now. Examine carefully, because 200 years of tech advances would likely render some rock overhead worth very little in terms of cover if somebody noticed, even more so if the war's still on and people have itchy trigger fingers. And given we might possibly be able to tank a moderately irritable pigeon, in our current state... But on the bright side, maybe a design child could genuinely help us in our quest to be not half-slagged on the inside.

(I too wish we could meet Kongo, Best Ship. Anime-Kongo, that is.)

You guys sure aren't playing nice.

The Torch Run thing was a joke, one which was in poor taste and I apologize for.

question!

what constitutes "conventional materials"?

like are we looking at replacement parts for our fried systems or something else?

Nope, which meant someone might have been poking around Surcouf's inside...

Somehow I really hope this isn't an orchestrated scenario of some kind to get us awake and going.

(Is it spelled Habakkuk, like the original reference, or Habbakuk, like the presumed typos in some of the original project documents? Just curious here.)

Pretty much anything that isn't nanomaterials. meaning that their compatibility with things made from nanomaterials is lacking.

What you make from material you gather is up to you, and you can make most tools you'd need for crafting out of your limited supply of nanomaterials.

Think of ot this way: Non-computerized human tech is your effective limit, until you have nano to work with or computers to tear apart for components.

So...keep it simple. The option is there for small things or side projects, not replacing your photon turrets.

In terms of combat or ship repair: You could build old fashioned armor or simple ship parts (doors, walls, flooring, etcetera). You'd also want to replace them with nano as soon as possible, though: They tend to get in the way when you're modifying yourself.

many thanks

because while stripping everything we can reach would work in the short term, having access to everything we possibly can is going to make our lives a lot easier. And while I doubt anyone is watching this little sub pen in the middle of nowhere, we are literally defenseless, so stealth is our single solitary means of staying alive right now
