After three updates, I think it's about time we conclude this conflict between Artie and Son. Given his severed hamstrings and the Aggravated damage dealt to him, I say Artie comes out on top. As the victor, they'll decide what to do with the Malkavian Primogen during the next update.
I agree this is a good point to wrap it up. In continuation of my previous metaphor.

"I'd describe this encounter as two cutting boards in mortal combat. And then one of them got hit by an axe."

We enter this fight out of desperation and then we find out that we're perfected matched with our opponent. If it wasn't for us landing the hamstring cut, I doubt this would have gone as well. But at this point Artie has Son dead to rights. The man gives me serious Serial Killer vibes.

Oh he's also a vampire, but that's somehow less concerning?

Anyway, right now he can't walk, he can't run, he has virtually no chance of fighting us off, and he's on our bad side. Being political enemies is fine, part of democracy and all, but going after a nice person's family. 😤

Wait a second?! Does Son only have 3 dice for his total Strength + Brawl?

Maybe we pick the general approach to a fight at the start, then you roll for all the rounds in the combat and make the combat a single update, spending Hunger and Willpower at your discretion. Keeps the number of dice roll posts to one (or you can roll on something like random.org and post the results in spoilers within the update) and speeds combat up tremendously. We lose granularity, but that's the nature of the medium.

Something similar was done with Of Wolves and Witches, which also adapted an RPG with round-based combat and metacurrency.

I'll admit a part of me likes the idea of one 'long' uninterrupted fight scene. Rogue really good at writing them so, I kinda want to see what he might write if given more freedom.

But I also kinda like see the pass or failed results and analyzing and judging our next move in the fight.

The only thing that comes to mind to blend these together is to separate them entirely. We continue to make the decisions each combat round and see how the combat-related roll checks wind up, like we've been doing. These roll posts would be unmarked in the thread like they already are but wouldn't have a story section to them. Instead the story sections would be saved for one big narrative update.

———

We don't necessarily need to change anything for the quest though, perhaps in the future if a choice involves multiple checks, like a grapple, you show us the odds for each.

For example,
[ ] [ATTACK] I'll go for the grapple to set myself up for a bite attack.
Automatic Success
-Son will roll to break Artie's grapple, possibly using Blood Surge and Willpower.
Son's Strength + Brawl (Artie's Difficulty: 2)

Without Blood Surge, Son only rolls three dice for Strength. Artie is much better at hand-to-hand combat than Newberry, but the Primogen's more potent Blood adds three dice whenever he calls on its power.
Okay, I've read enough of the player handbook to know, that for this quest you use Blood Surge differently. For example, Artie rolls two dice even though he has a Blood potency if 1. Son rolls 3 dice even though he has…(checking official character now that combats over 😳) a Blood potency of 3.

That whole fight was pretty crazy, happy Artie won in the end though.
Me too.

I actually use the updated Blood Potency table from the V5 Companion, which you can find on the White Wolf wiki. The developers buffed the Blood Surge mechanic when they realized that most players didn't see the extra (singular) die they got from Rousing the Blood as worth it.

Ohhhh!
That explains it! Despite how many times I've looked at that book, I never noticed the errata. It's actually one of the very last pages of the book.

So when sun rolled 7 dice for Dexterity and Melee for example, he actually only had 4 dice between the Attribute and Skill.

Family Ties 10.10
[X] [ATTACK] Forget grappling. I'm going straight for Newberry's throat with my fangs.
-[X] I'll make a Rouse check to add two dice to my roll.
-[X] I'll spend a point of Willpower to reroll up to three dice unaffected by my Hunger.

The Beast roars within you as you leap atop Jason Newberry. For the next few moments, you are no longer Arturo Delacruz: veteran, artist, brother. No, you are an apex predator wearing the skin of a dead human.

Your teeth gnash with fury as you wrestle the Primogen of Clan Malkavian to the ground. For all the potency of his vitae, Jason Newberry lacks the skill in hand-to-hand combat to fend off your assault for long. After a few well-placed punches, you straddle your prey's stomach, and he is a second too late to block the first blow. The second strike lands just as hard, and so does the third.

Newberry crosses his forearms to guard his face, only for you to wrench them apart. For a moment, your eyes meet, and you hesitate. Perhaps you've overreacted - no. You let out a guttural snarl as Newberry's dominating tendrils shrink away from your unswayable mind, and your forehead descends on Newberry's nose as an improvised hammer. Up and down you go, furiously headbutting your foe in the nose. On the umpteenth ascent, you finally glimpse the bloody tears welling in Newberry's eyes - a sign of weakness that has your fangs out and eager to play.

Your elongated canines pierce through Newberry's tailored wardrobe and find purchase at the base of his throat. Some small part of you is surprised at how easily your fangs can tear into the undecaying flesh of another vampire, but the vast majority is only concerned with the kill to come. However, before you can finish the job, Newberry practically tears you off him like an overgrown tick. You spit out the bloody strips of cloth torn out by your teeth and look up to see that Newberry's right shoulder is a bloody ruin.

As the Primogen of Chicago's Malkavian props himself onto his elbows, you see the full extent of the damage to his body. Vitae still trickles from the corners of his eyes and down the slope of his broken nose. His shirt and coat hang by threads from his shoulders. Wine-red vitae seeps out from the puncture wounds you inflicted, staining Newberry's clothes almost black. His ruined legs lie still on the Kathy family's front lawn.

You then see Newberry weakly extend his hand out in front of him. "P-Please stop. I've had enough. Just let me go, and I promise I won't breathe a word of this to the court. I'll even leave the mortals who live here alone. We can both pretend as if tonight's unfortunate events never happened. What do you say?"

Son's words, even wracked with pain, ring with perfect sincerity. Even after what happened, part of you is inclined to show mercy to a surrendering foe, especially when the enemy is still Primogen of Chicago's Malkavians. Of course, you're nowhere near naive enough to let someone like Jason Newberry walk away without something in return. Given his severed hamstrings, Son is unlikely to find shelter before sunrise. You can use his desperation to your advantage by extracting the promise of a life boon before rendering assistance.

On the other hand, why risk having a known adversary owe you a debt? It'd be far safer for you to beat him into a torpor and leave his comatose corpse out for the sun to burn. However, Son's disappearance would raise questions in court - questions you may not want to see answered.

There is also a middle ground between mercy and destruction. If you were to put a stake through Newberry's heart, you could bring him to another Kindred for final judgment and wipe your hands clean of this whole affair.

A couple of candidates spring to mind. Firstly, there is Kathy Glens. You don't doubt that Baby Chorus's lead guitar will want to face the lick who threatened her mortal family. As the Kindred most wronged by Son, shouldn't she be the one to decide his fate?

However, the Sixth Tradition remains Prince Jackson's prerogative as Prince of Chicago. While he may have tried to kill you, Son is still Primogen of Chicago's Malkavians. Despite your status as one of the Prince's favorite enforcers, it would still not bode well for you if someone found out you beat the Malkavian Primogen half to Final Death. However, if you could get ahead of the Harpies and tell the Prince your side of the story, he might be inclined to shield you from the political consequences of your actions.

Finally, there is Bronwyn of the Blue Velvet, one of Son's fellow Malkavians. While you're frequently partnered with Alexa on Hound business, you can't say you have any real connection to Chicago's Malkavians. However, Alexa has let slip enough about Son's mandatory group "therapy" sessions for you to pick up that Son's clanmates have little love for their designated representative on the Primogen Council. As the Chicago Camarilla's unofficial spymaster and a prominent keeper of Elysium, Bronwyn could be an influential ally among the local Lunatics - if you were to turn Son over to her and allow the clan to keep things in-house.

However, there is one final option available to you. Ironically, it is an act Son told you about so many nights ago when you first brought Sierra to Elysium: diablerie, the crime of consuming another Kindred's vitae to the point of Final Death. You can't say that you like having any part of Son's essence within you. However, something deep inside tells you there is no surer way to power than to taste that last drop. The only question is whether you're willing to seize this singular opportunity.

God damn that was brutal. Major props to the writing of that scene, plus with Son's dialogue. Fear is dripping from him, to the point it makes me pity him, inspires merciful feelings.

He's a bad dude and he'll keep doing bad dude things if he lives, but he is surrendering and he's so full of fear. Straight up icing him feels wrong from a justice perspective. Surrendering him to Kathy is even worse in that sense. For that, I'm inclined to go with either Jackson or Bronwyn, but to be honest, I'm not really sure what the deal is with giving him to Bronwyn.

@Rogue Attican, why is leaving Newberry with a clanmate a way to deal with him? Does Bronwyn have beef with him? And how's she acting on behalf of other Malkavians when Newberry's the Primogen?

I hinted at this during Updates 4.01 and 4.02, but Chicago's Malkavians are far from the "one big happy family" image Son likes to portray to the court. Each member has their own agenda, but Artie's picked up enough about the clan's internal politics from Alexa that he figures none of them will shed too many tears if Son were to "disappear." Handing Son over to Bronwyn would allow the Lunatics to deal with their Primogen as an internal matter, as opposed to making them look bad by association when their representative on the Primogen Council faces the chopping block.

I'll edit the update so that the situation is clearer.

Damn for all that Artie is vampire Captain America he's still a trained soldier and monster of the night.

Killing Son will put a lot of heat on Artie, sparing him will make him hold a grudge, eating him is just not something Artie would do. So that leaves giving him to someone else, I don't want Kathy to dirty her hands with this, and if we gave this to Jackson it could cause problems for the Malks and possibly be an overreach on his part. Son is implied to be pretty horrible to his clan, they are his biggest victims so it's appropriate they decide his fate.

From what I gathered in game, Bronwyn is something like a political rival to Son's strangle hold on the Malkavians. During the Lasombre voting Son was less so voting with the consensus of his clan and more voting for what was likely in his own best interests. Given his reaction to our meddling he either has some kind of past with the Sabbat or he has a hatred for the Lasombre. He clearly felt threatened by the concept of former Sabbat Kindred being on speaking terms with the Camerilla Kindred of Chicago.

Each Lunatic having their own agenda sounds normal from what we know about vampires in general. The problem I imagine is that Son has been projecting the false image of the Chicago Malkavians being a unified front. Which is both impressive and unusual from most vampire perspectives I imagine. It also sort implies how…'authoritative', Son must have been to keep his clan in line.

[ ] [SON] I'll show Son mercy - for a price. Make it clear he owes me a life boon.

I would never trust the Boon of an Enemy. If this was coming from a friend, a stranger, or a neutral party than I'd say we should accept.

[ ] [SON] I cannot allow a monster like Son to roam free. I'll destroy him myself.

Tempting, but he's so high profile I don't know if we could get away with it. Honestly knocking him into Torpor could be easier, but I'm not sure what kind of magic the Kindred have access too for investigations.

[X] [SON] I'll put a stake through Son's heart and let another Kindred decide his fate.

In the short term this sounds like poetic justice, but in the long term this will likely lead to the final death of Kathy Glens. It might not happen immediately but who knows what will happen during the investigation.

-[ ] As a loyal Hound, I should bring Son to face Prince Jackson's justice.

We sorta talked about a week or so ago, the best excuse we have is that as part of fulfilling a boon, we attacked an unknown vampire that had been unsubtly stalking in this area. Due to the stresses of dealing with the Wight and our previous altercations with unknown vampires. We had aggressively attacked the suspect to bring him in for questioning. Than we realized we had subdued the Primogen of the Malkavian of all people.

-[X] I'll let Bronwyn deal with her Primogen on behalf of the other Malkavians.

We may not know Bronwyn that well on a personal level, but I doubt she'd be worse than Son if she took over. Not saying she specifically will but someone probably will. I get the feeling he'll 'mysteriously' fall into Torpor and no visits will be allied to see him EVER.

This kinda makes me think of selling out a bad man to the mafia, because the mafia hate the man and want their pound of flesh and blood.

-[ ] Let me write the name of a different Kindred.

Taking him to Gengis or Wainwright would be interesting. An Anarch killing a Primogen would be a powerful statement that would lead to almost immediate war between the two factions. If we wanted to cause chaos that's probably not a half bad way to do it.

[ ] [SON] I'm not just out for Son's vitae: I want his powers and soul. I'll drain him to the last drop.
The act of diablerie will cost Artie a dot of Humanity, perhaps even more…

Funny enough, Vampires with high humanity are the best at performing Diablerie. If. If we did this we will always be one power away from condemnation by the Camerilla of Chicago. It's an enormous gamble of our position, our livelihood, and our loved ones.

Side Tangent:
A part of me wonder what kind of Malkavian Artie would have been if the character creation was different. If Nos!Artie is a vampire Captain America, would a Malk!Artie be a vampire Deadpool?

I'm pleasantly surprised to hear the update got an emotional response from you. I wanted to emphasize that while Artie may be the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man monster, he's still a monster.

God, imagine having a bunch of SV users stuck in your head for the rest of eternity. That said, a lot of Artie's "good guy" traits come from the boost to Humanity that comes with being a Consensualist sort of predator.

[X] [SON] I'll put a stake through Son's heart and let another Kindred decide his fate.
-[X] I'll let Bronwyn deal with her Primogen on behalf of the other Malkavians.

This satisfies justice while also neutralising Son as a threat to other people, and it's Clan Malkavian dealing with their own Primogen, so it's more legit than if we did it ourselves.

In hindsight, I think this entire event highlights that. When Artie saw Son outside the house his Humanity thought 'Bad guy! Stop him.', while his Beast thought 'Adversary! Kill him!'. When a fight breaks out between two apex predators, it usually only end when the weaker one is dead or flees.

I wonder if this had been just any other random vampire would we and Artie have jumped to violence? Or would we have tried to talk it out first?

It's almost OOC with how quick we accepted violence as the first solution against Son. And that's kinda scary to think about in universe.

I mean, it's a vampire menacing a mortal family. Opposing the vampire with violence is the default and human thing to do, just ask any hunter. There are many times when diplomacy with vampires should be the first thing attempted, but this isn't one of them.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with both of your points. Violence was warranted in this situation, I never argued against it to any great degree. And there have been quite a few times where if we could, we talked first before turning to violence.

🤔 I'm probably just overthinking the the whole situation, and wanted to share once my train of thought finished spiraling. I started thinking of all our previous fights and how they compared to this one, than I thought about the Wight fight and our Coterie, which made me think about the entire event with the concept to Golconda on my brain. Finally I just started thinking to myself that this fight from start to finish might make a good meta example in the future of the man & beast complimenting one another in a fight, especially with how amazing Rouge is in describing the scene and emotions of characters. It felt to me the Beast was a lot closer to the surface during that mauling than earlier in the fight.

To repeat a well-known quote, the Lunatics run the Asylum. Let the madmen take care of their own, they see what may and what is and they hear the whispered and unspoken whether they are aware of it or not. We do not want to get on their bad side.

A few moments pass as you wrestle with the temptation to end things and turn Newberry to ash here and now. After all, he's already proven himself a threat to innocent mortals. Why should you risk releasing Son back onto the board because some power player in the Chicago court thought they could make a pawn out of him? Better to be safe than sorry.

Aside from the anger, there are the darker parts of yourself to worry about. They whisper sweet reminders of how easy it'd be for you to take the Malkavian Primogen's power for yourself. They speak only the truth when they say the act would be the most intense pleasure you could ever hope to experience in your entire existence as one of the Damned. There would be no shame, the Beast whispers, of drinking deep from the veins of this beaten and battered excuse for a vampire.

You force yourself to set the wrath and the lust aside and focus. If you are unwilling to take matters into your own hands, you must decide who should decide what to do with Son. Kathy is the Kindred most directly wronged by the Malkavian Primogen, but you're also one of the Prince's Hounds. Shouldn't Prince Jackson be the one to decide the fate of one of his advisors on the Primogen Council?

However, it might be better to allow the Malkavians of Chicago to decide what to do with their Primogen. While the Lunatics are disorganized even at the best times, you know of one Kindred who might be able to command their respect: Bronwyn, owner of the Blue Velvet and the Chicago court's unofficial spymaster. Handing Son over to her would allow the children of Malkav to keep things in-house, so to speak, and score you some points with the only clan that rivals your own when it comes to spying.

Your mind made up, you get back on your feet and draw your wooden stake. As you loom over Son with your weapon in a reverse grip, he extends an arm in a hopeless attempt to resist. However, the sharpened point of your stake is deaf to his feeble pleas, and a paralyzed Son collapses onto the ground. You've never been on the receiving end of a wooden stake, but you can't imagine enjoying the sensation of perceiving the world while being utterly helpless to affect it. Son can still see, hear, smell, and feel, but in his current state, he's little more than a puppet with his strings cut.

As you hoist Son over your left shoulder like a sack of potatoes, your other hand fiddles with your burner phone. As Kathy picks up the other end of the line, you raise the flip phone to your ear and utter a simple phrase. "It's done."

On the other end of the line, Kathy lets out a sigh of relief. "Thank you, Artie. You have no idea how much this means to me. I'm glad I went to you for help."

"Hey, I get it. Family is important," you reply as memories of your brother pass through your mind. The fond memories of Nick give you a moment of peace, only to be poisoned by intrusive thoughts of something happening to your big brother. Nick has already been kidnapped once by hunters - who else might go after him as an indirect way of hurting you?

"Yeah, I owe you," Kathy says, snapping you back to reality. Her voice then begins dripping with venom, the verbal poison made practically incandescent by the anger only a Kindred's Beast could unleash. "My only regret is that I didn't get to turn the bastard to ash myself."

"I'm sorry I couldn't let you in on the fun," you say, affecting a chuckle even as you wince. While you technically haven't said anything untrue, not correcting Kathy that Son is still alive, albeit staked through the heart, still feels like telling a lie. Still, it's for the best, you tell yourself. The last thing Kathy needs is an excuse to indulge in righteous anger. "That said, tonight took a lot out of me. Do you mind if I head back to my haven?"

"Not at all. I'm almost at Gagandeep's. We'll talk later."

Kathy hangs up, leaving you free to walk back and think about how you'll store Son's body inside your room at Eleanor's house until Aurelio can pick him up.

Your meeting with Bronwyn is held not at the Blue Velvet but in an office in Chicago's central business district. As a Sewer Rat, you've heard the rumors about Bronwyn's workspace in the Loop, about how she meets with human traffickers within these walls to supply blood for the Blue Velvet. Then there are the whispers that Bronwyn got the Prince to declare a Blood Hunt on several Kindred who had otherwise been thought clean. Well, as innocent as bloodsucking monsters can be.

"Bronwyn," you say as you sit on the other side of her desk at her wordless invitation. Unlike the cerulean-tinted elegance of the Blue Velvet, the office here is spartan and not meant to be hosting guests, be they kine or Kindred. Still, you can't help but notice that there isn't a speck of dust in sight. You also note that Bronwyn, the consummate hostess, hasn't offered you a drink. It's doubtful that such courtesy slipped her mind, so you take it as a sign of how seriously she's taking this.

"Delacruz," Bronwyn curtly replies as she leans forward, placing her elbows atop her desk and steepling her fingers together. Her gaze is wary but not entirely hostile. "Last night, someone informed me that I'd find something interesting if I were to open the trunk of a particular car left inside the parking garage near the Blue Velvet. Would you care to guess what was inside?"

"One unfortunate Son," you reply carefully. You never know who might be listening in these nights. "I was running an errand for someone else in our social club, and he got in the way."

"I see…Was our 'friend' flouting any club rules?" Has Son violated the Traditions?

"The second," you reply, referring to the Tradition of Domain. "Though it's debatable enough that I decided not to argue the case with club leadership. Plus, I figured it'd be best if your 'therapy group' were to decide what to do with their leader. From what I hear, he isn't quite the beloved patriarch he wants the rest of the club to see him as."

Bronwyn hums as she leans back into the leather of her office chair, seemingly satisfied with your explanation. "I've heard plenty of rumors about our 'friend,' and all of them disturb me. Not having to attend another 'group therapy session' with him is worth popping a bottle of champagne for."

"May I ask what'll happen?" you ask, morbid curiosity getting the better of you.

Bronwyn doesn't so much as smile as she bares her teeth, vampire fangs betraying the Beast's temper. "I've heard rumors that there'll be 'blankbody activity' at Lakeshore Hospital's medical waste disposal facility about an hour before five. As a concerned citizen, is it not my civic duty to inform federal law enforcement of the threat?"

You feel your lips pulling taut to match Bronwyn's grin. "Well, as a veteran of the US Army, how could I possibly discourage you from taking steps to protect your fellow Americans?"

Bronwyn nods, her vicious smile fading as she leans forward to regard you carefully. "I won't deny that you've done a valuable service to me, my kin - possibly the whole city. What is it that you want in return?"

What should you ask of the Kindred most likely to become the Chicago Malkavians' next Primogen? A few options stand out to you. Firstly, you could take the opportunity to learn new vampiric gifts. Like the Nosferatu, the Malkavians also have the power to turn invisible with the Obfuscate Discipline. However, they also enhance their perception with Auspex and sway minds with Dominate. Honing your senses to supernatural levels appeals to the artist inside you, but perhaps there's a way to gain the sort of insight the Children of Malkav are notorious for. On the other hand, controlling minds with Dominate would be an effective, if ethically dubious, way of preserving the Masquerade.

However, you've also heard rumors that Bronwyn possesses limited shapeshifting ability - the kind typically associated with Clan Gangrel and the Ministry. While she probably can't teach you how to turn into a bat or a wolf, she could pass along the basics of the Protean Discipline, like making your eyes glow red or changing your body's mass and density.

Then there are Bronwyn's connections to the Circulatory System, the international human trafficking network that smuggles vessels between domains. While your stomach turns at the thought of getting involved with modern-day slavery, you can't help but admit that the Circulatory System's fleet of vehicles would be invaluable to Crossguard Security. They aren't armored vans so much as civilianized APCs, complete with firing ports so that passengers can shoot at targets outside without leaving the safety of the vehicle's armored chassis. Such secure transit would be handy should you travel outside Chicago to domains like Milwaukee and Gary.

Last but not least, you could always have Bronwyn owe you a favor or two. Having the next Malkavian Primogen in your debt is no small thing. Of course, you could curry favor with Bronwyn by waiving repayment for removing Jason Newberry from the board. Having one of the Primogen as your mawla could open many doors for you in the future.

After careful consideration, you open your mouth to reply to Bronwyn.

You have two points to spend on rewards from the future Primogen of Chicago's Malkavians.

Gain Bronwyn as a four-dot Mawla.

Artie got a lot out of this, Kathy owes him a life boon, plus whatever he can squeeze out of Bronwyn.

Okay so we can get the Disciplines from other people so the only thing advantage of learning from Bronwyn would be saving XP. So that leaves Boons or Mawla, I think having someone who will probably become the Malk Primogen as a Mawla would be more valuable than the Boons.

Cloud Memory is probably the most important discipline in the entire game. It's intensely valuable to every vampire that wants to uphold the Masquerade, and Artie's definitely that. We really want to get this power as soon as possible, and this way it's actually a bit cheaper than purchasing it the normal. way.

The red eyes provides an intimidation boost and dark vision, but we already have dark vision, so its utility isn't worth it. The weight-reducing power is better, but I can't think of a moment in the quest where it might've turned out useful.

I absolutely do not want to build ties with the Circulatory System, whether it's leasing their vehicles or becoming buddies with the city's head slaver. That said, getting some leverage on the head slaver is both good and valuable.

There would be no shame, the Beast whispers, of drinking deep from the veins of this beaten and battered excuse for a vampire.
I like the idea that Artie's Beast isn't one for lying. It only needs to tell sweet but dark truths to tempt Artie.

I like the idea every Beast is a little different from one another. Kinda like how wild animals at first seem to all act the same, but if you observe them long enough they all kinda have their own personalities.

I get that the Beast is a manifestation of supernatural predatory instincts but Golconda would be less interesting if every Beast could be handled the same way.

"May I ask what'll happen?" you ask, morbid curiosity getting the better of you.
Gosh. 😆
We really have no control over our compulsion, reminds me that we have a reputation for asking strangers life stories.

As a concerned citizen, is it not my civic duty to inform federal law enforcement of the threat?"

You feel your lips pulling taut to match Bronwyn's grin. "Well, as a veteran of the US Army, how could I possibly discourage you from taking steps to protect your fellow Americans?"
Dang…! That's clever. Makes the whole thing seem like an random chance if word does get out. To those not sufficiently paranoid or connected anyways.

On the other hand, controlling minds with Dominate would be an effective, if ethically dubious, way of preserving the Masquerade.
Since I started watching LA By Night, my opinion of this power has been inverted. I initially didn't like it because of how morally gray it was. But watching someone repeatedly use to remove loose strings and… save innocent lives from potential Blood Hunts was inspiring.

We save on some XP but more importantly we gain an ability that could let us spare lives. We are a Hound we are eventually going to run into a situation where we'll either have to kill a human who's a loose end or ghoul them to keep their mouth shut. But this power will let us save them from the retributions of others. We've already had a few close calls with this issue.
