Astro Force Quest - Be the Redshirt (New Frontiers)

[X] Call the higher-ups
-[X] See if anyone has figured up anything from the logs/charts from the navigational computer.
-[X] Ask how long we can safely enter the engine room (In case of emergency)
-[X] Ask how the bridge team is doing and if they learned anything else

RADIATION ALERT: 130 mSV/h.
Hm, That's fairly close to the 125 mSv dosage, which this site lists as:
  • 8 hrs exposure AT 0.125 Sv/Hour or 125 mSv/hour or 125,000 uSv/hour or 12.5 Rem/hour
So we'd have a little less than 8 hours exposure before we would risk any radiation sickness/death... and that's discounting any shielding the armor gives.
(This calculator affirms the 8hr limit.)

Since we know that (and/or it should be easily calculable from our equipment), know we aren't in immidate danger; however, it would probably be a good idea to repair their reactor before it breaks down even more.

-[X] Request an engineering team in radiation-hardened suits for repairing the engine.
-[X] Ask how the bridge team is doing and if they learned anything else.
-[x] Ask about the possibility of transferring the crew and passengers/cargo to our ship.

You key in your wristcomm. "LT? This is Haori."

The furry face of your superior appeared in fisheye perspective on the tiny screen.

"Ensign. Hold one, I'm putting you on with Casey."

There was a little whine of static and the screen split, showing Casey's masked helmet.

"Casey, your report?"

"We've secured everything up to the bridge door. They've closed some kind of blast door, so we're at, like, an impasse. We've encountered at least five guys who didn't want to come quietly; we captured two and a third is dead. The others made it into the bridge before the sealed it off."

"One of them is dead?" The LT said, real concern in his voice.

"Yeah. Alex hit 'em with a stunner at close range and they just up and died on the spot. I dunno my xenobiology, but I'm guessing cardiac arrest? All these dudes look on their last legs. Was probably just too much."

"Alright. What about you, Haori? I understand you've established communication?"

You gave a quick summary of everything that happened thus far, forwarding sensor data from your WristComm.

"... our prisoner popped the engine room hatch, which is leaking rads. We let him crawl in to get his cooperation; I think he's an engineer of some kind. It's unlikely he's going to try and funny business with his royalty onboard, but I can go get him-"

"No-go. None of you are going in; the radiation might be even worse down there. I'll get some of Marcotte's team to come in the airlock in their vacuum suits and police the room."

"Yes sir. The prisoner gave us the ship's destination, says their computer knows where it is. Any chance we can find that out?"

"I think one of the rooms we secured is their computer room, boss. Probably has their nav info." Casey chimed.

"Good. I'll relay this to the captain and get a computer team. Casey, you're on babysitting duty when they arrive. Haori, post somebody at that hatch, then secure the cargo bay. I want to meet some royalty."

The screen blinked out, and you hefted your pistol. "Xareed, hold the fort until Marcotte shows. Everyone else, cargo bay."

With a chorus of ayes, you made your way back down to the cargo bay doors. Two hatches, on either side of the door. Both of them looked as though they hadn't been opened in years. They were secured with a mechanical bar, but there was also a small console next to each door, possibly an electric lock. The face was missing from one console, while the door opposite looked almost rusted through at the locking bar.

What do you do?

[x] Plan: Open Sesame
-[x] examine the faceless console, scan it (and the working console) too.
-[x] if your standard equipment can emulate the face use that; if not then:
--[x] attempt to open the rusted door w/ console,
--[x] disengage faceplate and see if you can wire it into the other console and open the door.
--[x] Kick the rusted bar if needed.
---[x] Is shooting it safe? Shoot it if it needs it.
----[x] We're Redshirts: shooting is always an option.

[x] Plan: Open Sesame

Shooting is a solution to most engineering problems. In fact, it is a solution to most problems, period. I approve.

You take a look at the panel and poke it a couple times. You pull a few wires loose and press all the buttons.

"Anyone have any idea what to do with this thing?"

There was a collective shrug.

You have no Science, and no Skills that would give you more Science. So when you try Science stuff, it just doesn't happen!
"Alright, time for traditional method. 'Rex, get over here."

You line up to kick the door open.

Check 4d6 please.

Dice?

Not good dice.
"1... 2... 3... argh, fuck!"

You and Mo'rex kick at the locking bar at the same time, which results in nothing but a sore toe and a scuff on your white boots. Rex swears in his alien tongue and hops on one foot.

"Alright, plan B." You draw your ACER pistol and turn the knob until it clicks onto EHP, then you hesitated a little.

Emergency High-Power mode was your pistol's desperation mode; it just dumped the battery in a huge blast of light and electricity. Even if you didn't use up the battery, you were going to fuse the lens chamber shut and render it inoperable.

Fire anyway?
[ ] Yep.
[ ] ... maybe there's another way? (Start writing in)

Do we have people who can open it on board of our own ship? And can they kindly walk over? I mean, we must have our own engineers.

[x] Plan: Open Sesame II
-[x] Ask for two engineering teams.
--[x] One w/ radiation hardened armor to repair the leaking reactor.
--[x] One to open these doors.
---[x] Remember to give a detailed description, and scan, to the higher ups so they can forward the info to engineering.

Aight, sorry about that.

I went to Metatopia last weekend and ran some pretty killer playtests of New Frontiers. I got a lot of good feedback and have done some rewrites on the system. In particular, lower-ranking characters are getting something of a power boost, and I'll have a cool set of new ethics systems for you to answer about your character in the interlude.

We'll finish out this episode, then I'll update your character to the new system.

[x] Plan: Open Sesame II

With security mostly handled, it didn't take long for the alien ship to start swarming with orange and yellow environmental suits. One of the engineers you requested stopped by with a mag cutter and, after struggling ineffectively with the lock, took the entire door off by the hinges.

There was a steep, twisting staircase down into the cargo bay. The room was cold, even in your suit, and frost clung to every surface, but it looked it much better shape than the other decks. It was probable that nobody had been down here in years.

Under a thin layer of ice were dozens of coffin-like pods, linked to the roof by heavy cables. You knew a cryo-pod when you saw one; you wiped the frost off one and were greeted with the frozen face of the inhabitant under glass. This one looked a lot healthier than the last, almost like a different species; fuller faces, softer features, and smooth scales with an iridescent sheen. An orange button glowed softly on the console next to the pod; the obvious disengage mechanism.

The other members of the team were likewise rubbing away ice, revealing a variety of creatures. Most of them were of the same species, but you found a few canine-like animals you assumed were pets, and one beast that was perhaps meant to be ridden.

"Hey Ensign, take a look at this one." Doyle said, scraping more ice off one of the pods. "This guy looks important."

Inside this pod was a male who was decked in serious finery. His clothes looked as though they were woven from fine metals, and there were rings with a variety of exotic stones. He was frozen with his arms crossed in front of him; in one hand was a pistol, and in the other some kind of strange barbed whip.

This must be that Prince Tewa-fa the crewman told you about.

[ ] Open the pod.

I'd rather not play around with life support systems we don't know much about.
