Asphodel in Mourning: A Disco Elysium-Inspired Pokémon Quest

Guys I think I was wrong to worry about POISON earlier, I think STEEL is gonna kill her first.
No. It's the Chancey and Nurse Joy at the Pokémon Center that are going to kill her. And then heal her in such a way that H will be forced to take some well deserved rest. Repeated until even the voices in her head get browbeaten into urging H to take the freaking rest.

...I just had a terrible realisation. The MC has poorly defined looks, has heroic intentions, unintentionally makes herself attractive to and inspires protectiveness in people around her, and has a name beginning with 'H'.

That's right. We're an H-protagonist.

Rest is for the weak, and we aren't weak. Look at our success streak! Why, if it continues, we'd be able to pretend to be fine until the end of our life!

[X] [Poison] Challenge the pack leader with Poison-type moves. Show the Growlithes that pride can be a trap, that there are enemies who can weaken and subvert their strength, that they must watch out for treachery.

[X] [Ground] Challenge the pack leader using the environment. Show the Growlithes that this land will not theirs until they learn to master it, to use its way; that as long as they are strangers it may be turned against them.

I do honestly think that Poison is a mistake - it's certainly an in-character mistake, but I feel it's a mistake nonetheless to reach out with the voice of betrayal, underhandedness and cynicism. Ground or Fighting are healthier lessons, and between them I prefer Ground for the advice it gives these Growlithes on settling into their new homes and integrating with the ecosystem.

Edit3: Oh how did I forget to note I love how foolish our MC is, and how much I love her compare/contrast with Yellow. Ship ship ship

I'll say I like how directly this challenges H's views. Ultimately the issue of feral pokemon shows you can't put the trainer genie back in the bottle. Pokemon will naturally seek out humans, and all creating an army of ones who remember them would do is result in them eventually all just finding a person, even if it wasn't the one that traveled with, and then going to give whoever did that hell (since many trainers would be missing their own pokemon or be angry for someone who did/have an interest in making a name for themselves taking them down).

Ground is nice, and shows again how thoughtful she is, but I think we need to heighten the contradictions.
Above was initial thought, but wow the idea of leaning into feral pokemon to educate them on how to deal with humans nonviolently, and how to win when humans are wrong and then export this to their families/pack sounds amazing. Goes with N's catch and release method too.

Edit: also the idea of intentionally taking volunteer pokemon who don't actually want to live with humans, but are willing to work with them to be stronger sounds like a wonderful synthesis to the feral pokemon problem and the problem of human exploitation of pokemon:

Build a working relationship with wild populations so they know how to handle humans, and they'll know how to avoid conflict, and be strong enough to win when they're pushed into it. Like going to college and coming back to your hometown to help improve it.

Edit2: Like suppose someone had taught the leader that its shiny coat made it a target, it could have sniffed out the guys looking for it and then known we were on the up and up. Being separate is why they got burned in the first place, and that will happen for as long as they remain ignorant, even if and especially if humans don't interact with them

Because most importantly of all, helping H become more grounded is important.

Reading the discussion about how the [Fighting] vote is going to teach the Growlithes that they should seek out trainers to join has helped me work out just what it is that I don't trust about the [Ground] vote.

All of these lessons are teaching more than H wants them to. H doesn't get to pick and choose what the Growlithes take from this experience.

[Fighting] has been covered reasonably well, I think. [Poison] is also pretty obvious, put in those terms: H wants to teach the Growlithes that pride is a trap, but they're all too likely to take the lesson that honor is, as well - and given that they outnumber us significantly, that could be a mess.

So. What's [Ground] teaching, that maybe H won't appreciate?

"This land is hostile and dangerous, maybe we should pick somewhere else to live" is certainly an option.

"This land is peaceful, its inhabitants, kind."

On that note, I think we gotta get an Ice pokemon at some point. The Ice skill was funny the one time we saw her. "Get hypothermia, it'll make you stronger"
