As Black As Fate: A Mormegil Quest (ASOIAF/LOTR)

This is quite cool. Expected less than I clicked on the thread.

It helps that Turin's story is one of my favorites from the Tolkien's works.

As for the current choice, I'd urge you to vote for visiting Lord Stark. We have aided one side in the war, yet we need to hear both sides of the coin. I'd suggest going to talk with the enemy first - after all, Lord Stark might be executed or transferred, and you're never going to hear their side of the story.

Hearing how a captive man behaves could tell wonders about what his side is about.

Of course, after that, we could visit the man who owes us a debt (I'm hoping this is gonna possible), to get what the current allies are thinking.

[X] The Lord Stark is being held somewhere in this town. If you were to find him, he could perhaps explain the finer points of the conflict to you--if you talked him around to it, that is.

[X] Ser Myles Mooton told you to find him if you had need of him, and now seems as good a time as any. You will track him down and ask him to explain to you the particulars of this war.

He's the best positioned to tell us the unbiased truth.

Lord Stark is just as biased as Connington, just for the other side.

With Mooton we get a man who has a foot in each camp, he himself is fighting for Rhaegar because he was squired to the man a few years back, but the rest of his family are rebels. It's the best chance for a reasonably balanced view of the war.

Stark is just going to go on about his sister being abducted even though that might not be the case, after all Martin has said in interviews that Lyanna went with Rhaegar willingly at first, which implies that the whole thing started off consentually. Stark might talk about Aerys being an insane murderer, but he wouldn't know about Rhaegar's Plans to make Aerys Forcibly Abdicate as unfit to rule. Mooton would. That throws things into a whole different perspective, one that Stark has no way of knowing about.

Yeah, but my urging is not to go and behave as Lord Stark wants, just to hear his side of the story. Ned would go on about the mad king and his sister's kidnapping. He might not.

I just think that Turin should evaluate the enemies, before going to listen what the allies say him.

After all, same biased angle applies with Mooton (wasn't he a friend of Reagar?). Turin doesn't know who is telling the truth and I'm all for talking to both. With going to Stark first, we will know what to ask the man who is in our debt, and get a straight answer from him. For example, for now we only know the name of Stark's sister, but no details. After Stark gives us his version, we would be able to ask the right questions and get more information that way.

Mooton was squire to Rhaegar until a few years ago, but the rest of his family are rebels, he has a foot in each camp, as it were.

He's likely to be less biased than Stark or Connington accordingly, something of a middle ground, insofar as that's possible in medieval politics

Perhaps so. It's a reasonable choice based on canon SOIAF knowledge, then.

I'd argue that a better logical choice is to look at it from the lens of Turin, who doesn't know the Mooton's loyalties. He might be a complete loyalist, or be in a murky middle. Stark is an enemy we could get to know (an important one, by what we know). His info would be then used to talk to an ally that is in debt to us. That's the only true basis of my argument and choice.

... Interesting quest.

Although considering the whole Mormegil issue, one thing I am sad of was the lack of a option to truly go for Mormegil problem solving on the neutral path.

There are two armies clashing with two champions/leaders clearly identified. Why not kill both and end the war? Considering the data we had and the fact that the only thing we bring is ruin. Killing two would be kings in the same battle would have been the most Mormegil thing to do.

And the most interesting and entertaining. Both armies would have had to leave the field and the Mormegil could go south knowing that he has done some good by ending the battle swiftly.
