Chapter 39: Gathering to the War Cry

Chapter 39: Gathering to the War Cry

It's been busy. It's a good feeling after so long just sitting in port waiting for one thing or another. I feel focused. Anxious. Excited, even.

And I think I know where it comes from. I have something to fight for again. A future. One with my husband and son, where we can live in a world made whole again.

I won't give up that future. Not again.

- From the personal journal of Captain Misato Katsuragi of WILLE

Near Earth Orbit, May 11th, 2028

Daniel Theisman watched the silent stars wheel by outside the reinforced window, the red Earth below them, as he sat and rested from his shift on preparing the Evas in the Wunder's bays.

Having revealed their powers, it had made his team of engineers one of the most sought after, just after Ymris and her Interfacers. Thankfully, with how much Flux they built up maintaining not only the Evas themselves but their now extensive arsenal of weapons courtesy of NERV-Euro's Paris development branch, they managed to get sufficient rest time in between shifts regardless.

So, for now, he simply sat and watched the stars, wondering what might have changed here beyond the moon and the world below him. How far-reaching were the effects of Impact events that went only somewhat out of control like this?

"Deep thoughts?"

Daniel glanced over at Eleanor, who regarded him with a slightly amused expression as he shrugged. "To some extent or another."

Before he could continue, he heard his clear pad notifying him of a call, taking it out and frowning slightly as he answered the video call.

His brows rose as he took in what was clearly a ship's bridge, the beings in what was likely the command position regarding him levelly. One was human, wearing what he assumed to be a Commonwealth uniform, a light gray thing with spare rank bars on the shoulders. The other was a draconic figure, bronze scales gleaming in the lights of the ship's interior and wearing a somewhat darker gray uniform with red accent stripes that was clearly that of the Worldstrider Seabreaker Corps.

"This is Captain Harsiranti of the Seabreaker Corps and Captain Williamson of the Commonwealth Navy, in command of the CNV Abjurant." the draconic figure said, a deep and resonant voice clearly coming over the speakers. "We'll be arriving shortly at your position."

"It's a relief to see you, Abjurant," Daniel said as Eleanor and his kids soon began to crowd around him. "When can we expect you?"

Williamson seemed to try and answer, but Harsiranti raised a staying hand, looking to what was likely one of the bridge officers. Then, she smiled, a somewhat unsettling sight with so many sharp teeth. "Look out your window, sir."

Daniel's gaze whipped around to the window, several of the kids going past him to get a better look as a Dip Drive point opened up, seemingly diagonal to their ship. Daniel expanded the window with a simple Expression as more and more people gathered at various windows to take in the sight, pulling out phones or cameras to record it.

Then, as if breaching the surface of a prismatic sea, the Abjurant slid out from the point, a vessel with a tube body shaped like a four-pointed star, a widening tail that held the vessel's eight Metos Sails, low and long things built to try and balance stealth and speed that folded up as the ship's Physical space engines kicked on to bring them into position.

Daniel looked up and down the bay, seeing the crew's disbelief, awe, and outright joy at the sight, and chuckled. "You sure know how to make an entrance, Abjurant."

Williamson smiled alongside his fellow captain. "I've been told that you and your fellow pilots have been invited aboard. Our passengers have been excited to see you again."

"Any chance we get to know how many are here now?" Daniel asked.

Williamson shook his head. "I've been asked to keep that a secret. All I can say is that I think you'll be pleasantly surprised."

Daniel nodded. "Good to know. Theisman out."

With that, the call ended, and Daniel stood, looking at the kids who now regarded him with varying levels of open expectancy. "I'm going to guess at how much you all want to come with me," Daniel said flatly, even as he smiled slightly.

"Bruder," Asuka said, "You'd have to pin us to the bulkhead to stop us."

Daniel's smile widened. "Far be it from me to try that. But we're going to have a few others coming with us."

"Unsurprising in the slightest," Rei said with a shrug as Daniel tapped on his clear pad. "The other pilots will want to see who all might be here."

"Them too, of course. Along with Misato, Ryoji, and Ritsuko." Daniel said somewhat distractedly, waiting for who he was calling to pick up.

The Children were confused only for a moment as Daniel's call connected. "Hello, Commander Kaji. I can likely assume you saw the same thing we did."

A pause. "Well, I'd like to invite you, Captain Katsuragi, and Vice-Captain Akagi to meet with our pilots. Yes, I'll let them know, and we'll teleport over."

. . .

Daniel fuzzed into the transport room of the Abjurant, a rather large space likely used for the deployment of any marine forces the ship might have, whistling softly as he stepped down from the platform, a party of a little over a dozen following behind him.

The captains were there, saluting sharply as Daniel stopped in front of them. "Welcome aboard, sir," Williamson said.

Daniel saluted back quickly. Best to get the somewhat awkward part out of the way for him. "Thank you. Even from here, I can tell the both of you run a fine ship."

"Thank you, Colonel." Captain Harsiranti said as she and Williamson began to lead them down the hall. "Williamson and his crew learn quickly. It'll be sad to give up the Steadfast as Iron, but if it's going to be put to use here, then I can't say that I'm entirely disappointed."

"Hold on, hold on," Eleanor said, making her way to the front of the group as gracefully as she could. "This is the Steadfast? You're kidding me."

"I'm going to guess this was a somewhat famous ship?" Captain Katsuragi asked.

"You could wallpaper the transporter room with the list of service decorations this ship got in the Unity War," Eleanor said in a daze. "This was part of the first line of vessels like this. How did Chandra ever get convinced to give this vessel away?"

"As far as I can tell," Harsiranti replied, "it was either going to be this or being put into mothballs. It took all Sovereign Chandra had to convince the other Sovereigns of even just doing this much, distributing the Seabreakers that they wanted to decommission."

She paused. "Though they drew the line at giving the Outriders or the Commonwealth the Martok. Or the Sheridan, the Iroh..."

Both Eleanor and Daniel's eyes were wide as dinner plates now. "You're kidding me. The Battle-fleet Carriers too?" Daniel said incredulously.

"All the way down to 9," Harsiranti said with a draconic grimace. "I have no idea how they're going to staff all the Exclusion Zones, with how they're cutting down on personnel as well. But the other Sovereigns seem confident that things are largely under control."

Daniel and Eleanor looked at each other, openly worried, before the group came to a stop in front of a door. "Well," Williamson said, "we'll leave you here at Briefing 1. Your pilots have been… interesting to have on board."

With that, the two captains walked away towards other duties, the group standing in front of the door for long moments. "Afraid of what's on the other side?" Eleanor asked Daniel privately.

"More of what's not." Daniel took a deep breath. "Well, time to find out."

Daniel opened the door and stepped into the briefing room. His eyes went wide at the sight before him, the others filtering in behind him stopping in the front of the room as 22 men and women rose from their seats, circled around each other in small clusters, and stood at attention. His shock became a smile, tears beginning to well in his eyes.

"I'd assume that you only need this many people for 7 Evas?" Katsuragi said as they continued into the room.

Daniel glanced among his friends, knowing smiles on each of the members of HERZ's faces. Then, with a mock seriousness, Daniel walked to the back of the room and came to a stop at the center of a table, long and somewhat wide, that was its focal point. "At ease, pilots."

As one, the pilots sat down and straightened out the rows of seats, Daniel looking over at a sheet-white Katsuragi and Akagi, and a rather impressed Kaji, as the kids all went to sit alongside the pilots that they'd trained. Daniel took a seat next to Eleanor and Misato, the other adults quickly sitting behind the table around him.

Daniel swept his gaze across the room in appreciation. "Ladies and gentlemen," he began, "you have no idea how good it is to see you all here."

"What can I say?" Orien said with a shrug. "When we heard what y'all were going to do, we couldn't just leave our trainers high and dry."

"What about Rift duty?" Shinji asked. "Or any of the other potential Kaiju threats? Surely, someone would have had to stay behind."

"Well," Musashi said with a slight smile, "Godzilla has things under control, Rift duty has been mostly taken care of on the other Echo, and frankly… I think people need a bit of a break from seeing Evas in any capacity at the moment."

"Why is that?" Rei asked. "Has some sort of conflict happened while we were away?"

"Oh, dear," Galina said, running a hand through her hair. "The EvaTech debacle came and went while you were gone."

"EvaTech?" Akagi asked, a brow arched. "Some sort of company dedicated to Evangelions, I presume?"

"Worse," Galina replied, her expression twisting into a sneer. "Corporate-controlled Evas. And all the bullshit that brings with it."

The words sent a shiver through those who had been away from their world. "Corporate Evas…" Hikari said quietly. "What happened, to have that sort of unregulated power just try and come into existence?"

"That, Namiri," Mavuto said, "is a story for after the operation, I think."

He looked over at Daniel. "What are our orders, sir?"

Daniel nodded, looking around the room. "First things first. I see a few new faces here, which I always appreciate. Why don't you introduce yourselves to the rest of us who've been away?"

Captain Vincennes of HERZ, sitting with the American pilots, nudged the woman next to her, who jumped slightly before nodding. "Lieutenant Brynne Cavey, Army Evangelion Corps," she said, a slight lilt to her somewhat hesitant voice.

"Any callsign?" Kaworu asked with an arched brow and a slight smile. "I recall that's how we are to refer to you in battle."

It was silent for a moment, Cavey blushing slightly. "Firestarter." Again, the word was quiet.

The Children, Daniel, and Eleanor looked at each other with interested expressions. "Now there's a story I'm interested in hearing," Asuka said. "What's your specialty?"

"Crowd control, mid-range combat, and specialized rounds through Interfacing," Cavey said. "It's still new to me, but I've gotten a decent grasp of it."

"It's good to have you on the team, Lieutenant," Daniel said. His gaze drifted over to the woman who sat between Arantxa and Ernst. Even simply from the way she sat and looked at them, back straight, arms crossed, and regarding him intently with hazel eyes, he could tell she'd have a strong will. "And who would you be?"

"Lieutenant-Commander Zoryana Tkachuk, EuroEva-Cetus." the woman said, leaning forward, her shoulder-length blonde hair not obscuring her gaze much. "I try to keep the gap that our sniper and our brawler here next to me happen to leave from getting too crowded. It's a decent job. Pays well, at least."

Daniel nodded. "Very well. Well then, welcome to your baptism of fire, as it were. The situation we'll be going into is a weird one, I can promise you that."

Daniel set his arms on the table. "We're going into the heart of an active Impact, an Instrumentality event. The forces arrayed against us are as follows; on Commander Ikari's side, three ships of a similar type to the Wunder here, which you can look out the window and gauge the general effectiveness of, alongside an unspecified number of mass-produced Evangelions, barebones things that bear no resemblance to what you might have seen in HERZ archives."

"Along with that, there is a Scion Revival force consisting of at least 35 Seabreaker vessels, likely of various designs." he continued. "They will be escorted by 12 Herald Units, which are similar to the Mass-Production Evas that you know of."

"Any details on their capabilities?" Kotone Suzunami asked. "With all that, I think we could use all the help we can get."

"Somewhat enhanced from what you're already aware of for at least 11 of the 12. There is one that is likely going to be heavily modified and definitely using Expressions that are a golden color. Do not, I repeat, do not, engage that Eva. You will not win a straight-up fight. I will not win. For that is the Hollow Saint of War. The resident god of the battlefield."

It was silent for long moments, and Daniel hoped he'd gotten the point sufficiently across before Okomah-Mordi, a thin, wiry man compared to the rather toned Mavuto, chuckled softly. "The way you make it sound, we might be getting involved in a three-way brawl. That's going to get messy."

"It certainly would," Daniel replied, glancing down at the tabletop, a smart top apparently, and found the Pneumaically marked control for the holographic display. He placed his palm on the control, linking to the display as it activated from a now transparent panel in the floor.

The display blurred to life, showcasing a red sky, an utterly smooth white surface, and five crosses, close to the command staff, stretching up from it. They were utterly black, a rainbow circling the point where both lines crossed. One cross, far larger than the rest, seemed like it had been toppled over, a commanding presence in the center of the group.

Daniel looked over at Katsuragi, linking his soul to hers. "Captain Katsuragi," he began, "if you'll allow me, I'll showcase our current entry strategy."

Katsuragi nodded, and Daniel smiled slightly. "No need to speak. Just think, and I'll relay it."

He looked back to the rather captive audience. "This is the protective cover that overlays Antarctica. We have good reason to believe that Commander Ikari, and the Hollow Saint, will try to take advantage of a weak point in space, centered on the former Calvary Base, to open a path to an Interstitial Realm known as Minus Space. There, they will try and bend this world, and its people, to their separate wills."

"We will be making a hole at a point somewhere about 4 or 5 klicks outside of ground zero." Daniel continued, a ring about that size flashing around the general center of the area. "To do so, the Val will act as a pathfinder, breaking through the ice, so to speak, and carving a path through a sea of millions, if not billions, of Failures of Infinity."

As he said the name, an image of a typical Failure, crimson red and looking like a copy of Unit-01, appeared, spinning over the landscape it resided underneath for a few moments before disappearing. "And yes," Daniel said, "they're exactly as big as you think they are."

"For your parts, you'll be contained within the Evangelion bays present in the center of the Wunder. They should be able to hold most of your Frame Plugs. You'll have to deploy and form up as we're making our descent unless you're comfortable riding on the wings as you follow after us." Daniel smiled slightly with the last words, noting Shinji and Asuka looking over at Rei and Kaworu, somewhat uneasy looks on their faces.

As Daniel spoke, the view zoomed past the white, hexagonal tiles, past a roiling sea of what looked like LCL, then one of bodies, a shimmering corridor cutting through them, taking the pilots to a view of what looked like a circle of hell. The Black Moon loomed ominously, now tilted on its end and hanging just below the swirling clouds of the Failures, the strange ritual pyramid beneath it and just above the maelstrom, so like the image of the other Impact events. The crimson curtain below, as it were, pulled back to reveal a massive outline in the rocky surface of Antarctica, the form of one of the more wildly described angels of the Bible leering back at the group. In its center, a massive hole, the very space inside its bounds shifting and twisting, was right where Calvary Base had once been.

"Once we reach this point," Daniel said, "our next objective is to ensure that Unit-02, piloted by Asuka Shikinami-Langley, reaches Unit-13."

Images of both appeared as Daniel continued. "Those of you assigned to the task may well have to get her to an active Evangelion engaged in combat. Then, as much as I'm sure you'll want to stop it, events must play out thus; Unit-13 will have to consume Unit-02, Shikinami-Langley, and the Angel contained within both."

A murmur went up around the national pilots, all of them looking at each other. "Sir," Zhou Hua said, his brow furrowed in concern, "it seems like all that's happening right now is that we're supporting Commander Ikari's plans here."

"Unfortunately, Zhou, that is what we're doing to a certain extent," Daniel replied with a grimace. "Part of our mission here as well is to ensure that the vessels under Ikari's command are able to open the portal to the Interstitial Realm, allowing us to enter."

"And how, exactly, does Asuka feel about this?" Keita asked with an arched brow.

"Ms. Shikinami-Langley is well aware of the risks," Daniel said. "She, and I, hate this as much as you do. But we both know what's at stake."

"So you're saying we're going to be complicit in the potential end of the world?" Ernst asked, his voice holding a challenging tone. "That's a bold move for a force that's generally dedicated to saving the world."

"I know. Frankly speaking, however, it's our only chance to get at the engine of this world and… tune things up, so to speak. With Ikari's plan, he will use the Wunder, along with the other vessels of her type, to open the gateway to the Interstitial Realm of Minus Space, allowing anyone to follow after him. We have no such guarantee that the Hollow Saint's entry would allow for the same."

Daniel paused for a moment, smiling slightly. "And besides, she will have some help from the inside. Asuka Shikinami will be exactly where we need her to be."

Ernst's brow furled slightly as Daniel continued. "Once Ikari's ritual is completed, and the door to Minus Space is opened, I will be leading Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu to go and hold off the Hollow Saint, who will doubtless be going after him. Your job up there will then be to ensure that no one goes in after us. We can't afford anyone coming to reinforce either side."

"Now, wait a minute," Arantxa said, leaning forward. "If you can't beat the Hollow Saint in Physical Space, what changes once you go into Minus Space?"

"Honestly, not as much as I would like. Our job is to ensure that the Hollow Saint doesn't interfere with either young Shinji or Commander Ikari. Little more than that."

"And how does that work if all this god-like power is coming down on just you five?" Howard Hansen asked. "What ace do you have up your sleeve?"

Daniel smiled slightly. "In addition to our current forces, there is a force of friendly Unitists that will be joining us. Their support will be key, as they will be conducting a little ritual of their own, to take away the Hollow Saint's source of power. That's part of what makes your job topside so important. We cannot allow their work to be disturbed by any Revival reinforcements. Otherwise, this whole world is in danger of being indoctrinated."

It was silent again for long moments. "After this ritual is completed and the Hollow Saint duly neutralized, we will assist young Shinji in transforming this world in whatever way is deemed necessary. If we succeed… you'll know it when you see it."

Again, it was silent as the display blurred and faded away, Daniel crossing his arms and resting them on the table. Finally, someone chuckled softly, shaking her head. "I should have expected something as wild as this, really," Marie said. "So, how many Misatos did you consult in making this plan?"

Daniel stole a glance over at both of the Misatos, who looked back at him. Misato was amused, a slight grin on her face, while Katsuragi was more reserved, simply regarding him with a firm stare. "All of them at once, I suppose."

That had a chuckle ripple through the room, even the corners of Katsuragi's mouth twitching upwards for a moment as Daniel sat back in his chair. "Now, let's get to the nitty-gritty of who goes where."

. . .

The Next Day

Daniel, along with his kids and several other visitors going to and from the ship, had taken his leave to the Val, Eleanor by his side as they slowly shifted, as quietly as they could, into position over Antarctica. Kensuke, glad to be back at his post, stood at the helm, Daniel and Eleanor in the area below him in front of the tactical center.

"Amaya," Kensuke asked, "what's the status of those Revival vessels in the system?"

"All ships are converging on a location just off of Europa," Amaya replied. "As far as I can tell, we will be left alone here, as we have either not been detected, or the fleet has decided to ignore us."

"Why?" Kensuke asked. "They outnumber us easily. If they decide to try a concerted strike, they have every chance to knock us out of the fight before it's even started."

"It's one of the few advantages that we might get, I think," Daniel said quietly. "Hamar'ramah is arrogant in his power. Tavis as much or even more so, from what I can tell. They may have already won, in their eyes."

"They're damn fools then," Eleanor said firmly. "We'll make them pay for that if nothing else."

"Transmission coming through for you, Daniel," Amaya said. "The source is one Receptorist Jameson."

Daniel smiled slightly as he focussed on the far wall. "Put him on the main screen."

The wall was replaced by a screen, Jameson standing on what was assumedly the bridge of his ship. "Hello, Mr. Theisman." Jameson began. "I'd like to introduce the bridge crew of the Javelin, along with the Hussar Defiant and the Nature to Eternity. We've just arrived at the far edge of the system from the Revival fleet."

Daniel nodded. "Good to see so many of you here." he paused as he glanced at the ceiling. "Amaya, can you confirm their position?"

"Yes. The three vessels are currently holding station off of Pluto." Amaya paused for a moment. "Ship records identify the Javelin as a Mystery-class command cruiser, and the Hussar Defiant and Nature to Eternity as Radiance-class heavy cruisers."

"Your vessel's voice is correct," Jameson replied. "Gathering the vessels from hiding was a difficult task, but I think it will be well worth it."

"I would think so, too," Daniel replied. "So, who's going to be going where?"

"The Javelin will be followed into this Minus Space by the Nature to Eternity. We will be commencing the unsealing there. The Hussar will be accompanying your battlegroup here in Physical space."

Daniel nodded, and Jameson continued after a moment. "Is there any particular landmark we should be centering ourselves on?"

"More likely than not, we will be either on or within a structure known here as the Golgotha Object," Eleanor replied. "As far as we can tell, that is the 'control center' of the whole place. We don't know how far or close you'll need to be for your ritual, but we'll keep Hamar'ramah's attention on us, we can assure you that."

"Good to hear. We'll look forward to your signal to show us in." Jameson said. "Javelin out."

With that, the screen blinked out of existence. Daniel sighed quietly. "Well, then," he said, equally quietly, "I suppose I should go and get ready myself."

. . .

Daniel walked silently to his quarters, passing the noise of the kids and their visitors as he stepped into the room. He made his way through the all too spacious area to the 'closet' that held the rest of his collection.

He stepped in as the doors silently parted before him, walking through rows of display cases. Soon, he came to a stop in front of one particular case, staring at it silently for long moments before he opened it.

He had to bolster his strength to even lift the somewhat ruined sword from its place, setting it in front of him as he locked it in the air. The Dragonslayer. A weapon that had killed a god. But not simply due to its nature or that of its wielder.

He ran a hand across the flat of the blade, feeling the rough, almost hide-like texture of the fuller. He felt a slight prick from a sharp point he brushed over with a fingertip. After a moment, his fingers went numb, and he pulled them away, waiting for a moment as his healing, far slower than it should have been, restored his senses.

Daniel took a deep breath, then got to work, sending Frames out into the sword itself like grasping tentacles. As they reached his prize, they began to wither and die themselves, Daniel reinforcing them continuously as he began to draw the force out of the blade.

As he did, a red gem formed in the center of the fuller, and smoke of black and red began to coalesce within the dip, cascading off the sides of the sword with a shower of glimmering golden motes held within.

Finally, Daniel pressed the force into the crystal, a thing that could not decay, and the smoke lessened, wisps of it still trailing off the gemstone as much of it dissipated. 'Good. It's ready.' Daniel thought grimly as he set the Dragonslayer back in its case.

"What is that?"

Daniel looked over to see Eleanor standing, looking squarely at the jewel that had become one of the most dangerous things in Daniel's possession.

It was silent for a moment as Daniel looked down at the gem again, at what lay within. And his next words were quiet, almost reverent. "Destined Death."

"You have the rune of Destined Death?" Eleanor asked incredulously.

"No. The rune was simply a vessel, just as this gem is. What I have here is the extracted concept itself. A force that not even the soul can withstand."

Daniel pressed the gem to his chest, and it disappeared within him. He shuddered as he felt… nothing from its passage and final resting point, a pocket space set just below the top of his sternum.

"How did you get something like that?" Eleanor asked.

"From a collision of worlds. It was Guts' only chance to surely kill Griffith. I still don't know if his victory was worth the price he paid."

Daniel was silent for a few moments, turning and walking out of the closet, Eleanor going before him as the doors shut behind him. He had a contemplative expression on his face. "Maybe I'll ask him someday if I can find him and the others. Wherever they are… I hope they're happy."

Daniel took a deep breath, then looked at Eleanor. "There's something I have to ask you, and I know you won't like it."

Eleanor's brow furled in confusion as she remained silent, Daniel continuing into the silence. "When we go into Minus Space and stand against Hamar'ramah… I want you to stay behind."

Eleanor's eyes went wide. "No, Daniel. I can't let you do that. Not when everything's at stake."

"I won't be alone. I'll have the kids with me. And I have Destined Death to bolster me. I'll make it work."

"Damn it!" Eleanor said hotly. "Don't go and throw yourself away for some glorious sacrifice."

"You think this is glorious?" Daniel asked, stepping forward. "You think I want to do this? I'm scared to every hell I know of and a few I don't, and I have to keep the kids safe. I have to make sure he focuses on me, and me alone. I'm the only one who can stand up to him for any length of time."

Before he could continue, Eleanor planted a firm smack across Daniel's cheek. "Enough of this martyrdom nonsense!" she said firmly. "You… you just came back to me. You can't leave me now. Not after everything we've gone through."

Eleanor stepped forward, putting her hands on his shoulders. "Please." she pleaded quietly.

Daniel sighed. "I need someone who can keep things in line topside while I'm in Minus Space. You're the best person for the job. Besides, you've got a knack for patching people up that I don't. That sort of battlefield medicine might mean the difference between victory and defeat. And…"

He began to shake now. "And if I… die…"

Daniel finally stepped into an embrace. They stood there for time that neither cared to count as their very souls intertwined.

"Catch me," he whispered.

"Always," she whispered in turn.

It was silent again for a moment before they parted physically, tears running from each other's eyes as Eleanor brushed Daniel's cheek. "Damn you for being so convincing," she said quietly.

"And damn you for being so reliable and trustworthy."

The two chuckled softly for a moment before Daniel took a deep breath. "Thank you, Ellie. I appreciate your help here. And make no mistake. I intend to come back."

"I'll hold you to it," Eleanor replied with a soft smile.

. . .

Daniel waited patiently in his room now, sitting behind the desk and regarding the door rather intently. He'd probably be fiddling with something else if his mind wasn't so set on what he needed to tell his kids.

Finally, the door opened, and Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu, accompanied by Marie, walked in, evidently in the middle of a conversation.

"And they actually tried to have the Commonwealth over a barrel just because they did all their nonsense in space? And after they had the gall to poach from HERZ's staff?" Asuka asked incredulously.

Marie nodded. "Once the Abjurant showed up and we got off our tails and smacked them upside the head, they finally got the right idea about what uses Impact events were for. Now, they're the best supplier of massive-scale tools and equipment in the system. And besides, once a good chunk of the top management got ousted by the workers and new management got into place, they actually started suggesting some interesting ideas."

Marie looked over at Daniel, smiling as she nodded slightly. "Well, Zapp, I should probably let you get to whatever briefing Daniel has in store for you."

"We'll talk later, Barb," Asuka said with a grin. "You'll need to tell the rest of this story to Daniel after we're done."

"So it seems," Daniel said with a slight smile. "Good to see you again, Marie."

"You too. Later."

With that, Marie left, the Children sitting in the seats in front of Daniel's desk in short order. "So," Shinji said, "I'm guessing this has to do with us going into the Minus Space?"

"That it is," Daniel said, his smile fading slightly. "There's some info I feel you should have about a space like the one that we're heading into. I don't know much about this one in particular, but I've been in plenty of Interstitial Realms before, which informs a lot of what I have to say."

"Very well," Kaworu said. "What should we prepare for?"

"First off, with a Realm as connected as this one is likely going to be to the Physical Realm, there's every chance there might be some sort of nonsense that Hamar'ramah might use to play with the timeline. Pulling duplicates of things into existence, merging the time slinky into a single point in time, anything. He might not be able to harm you directly all the time, but if something like that happens, there's a better than good chance that he might use hostage tactics."

"What kind of hostage tactics?" Rei said slowly.

"Anything from trying to use a past version of yourself here as a shield to going to the beginning of the loop and threatening to erase someone from existence. As for how effective any of those might be is up to us. The fact remains, our job is going to be keeping Hamar'ramah in place until the other Unitists under Jameson can divest him of his power."

"Alright," Asuka said quietly, her brow slightly furled and her lips pursed in thought. "Anything else time-related that we might need to be worried about?"

"Not that I can think of. This isn't the sort of Echo where time is terribly malleable, slinkyfication notwithstanding. But there is some more that you should know about the sort of things we'll be able to do within Minus Space."

Daniel leaned forward. "I told you that environments in this space are malleable to your thoughts in an Interstitial Realm, but it extends far beyond that. Attacks, your form, allies that you might spin up out of thought, all are possible. However, if you try to focus on too many things at once or on something particularly complicated, you become vulnerable to a mental attack. Part of fighting in a Mental space is ensuring that you have enough willpower to shrug off anything trying to enter your mind. If someone gets into your head and is able to manipulate your thoughts, it's a quick road to getting defeated. Or worse, getting turned on your allies."

The apprehension on their faces was evident. Good. That meant they were taking this with the seriousness that combat like this deserved. "Alright," Daniel finally said after a moment to let them think, "here's the plan."

"First things first," Daniel began, "once the portal to Minus Space opens up and we're able to access it, we're going to make a mad dash to get there first, if we can. Our priority target is Hamar'ramah, with secondary targets being whatever reinforcements he might bring in with him. We don't even need to outright kill him. All we need to do is hold him in place until Jameson and his posse do their thing."

"As I've said before," he continued, "we're going to need a lifeline. That lifeline, should all else fail, is going to be Eleanor. She'll be topside waiting for our signal to pull us out if need be."

"Wait a minute," Asuka said, sitting up a little straighter. "That just leaves you as the only one with any experience with this Hollow Saint hurensohn to go up against him."

Daniel smiled grimly. "I've been a thorn in the side of both Tavis and Hamar'ramah in one way or another for quite some time. I'm going to make sure he focuses on me if nothing else."

"Now," Daniel continued, "once any secondary forces are out of the way, I will act as the main target of Hamar'ramah's attacks, make myself a general pain in the ass. You guys will be harassing him from the sides and back, dividing his attention to make things a little easier for all of us. If he puts his attention on you, do your best to get out of the way and let me know. I'll draw him back in."

The kids looked thoroughly concerned now. "Are you entirely sure about this, father?" Rei asked. "I don't believe I need to remind you that you are not as expendable as I once was."

"The fact of the matter is that as awesome as you all are, I simply have more experience, both in Mental combat and in Interfacing in general. The last thing I want to do is put any of you in any unnecessary danger. Even if things seem to be going poorly, unless I let you know otherwise, consider me getting beat down, at least rather overtly, an illusion meant to try and distract you. Please, kids, trust me on this."

It was silent again, the kids looking between themselves. Whether they were in silent conversation, soul-to-soul, Daniel didn't know and had no desire to pry.

Finally, They all looked at him seriously. "Alright. We'll accept this plan for now." Asuka said. "But don't do anything too stupid. The last thing any of us want is a repeat of the 48th Parallel."

Daniel nodded, knowing what she meant. "Alright. I'll do my best to not get too in over my head."

"Good," Shinji said with a quiet sigh of relief. "Whatever else, though, we're here to help."

The others nodded, and Daniel nodded in turn. "And I've never doubted it."

Daniel stood. "Alright. Let's get our affairs in order before the end of the world, shall we?"

The Black Moon

Asuka Shikinami-Bradley floated, as she had grown accustomed to, in her LCL tank with her eyes closed, desperately wanting all the walking around that she'd done as a… hologram? That was as good a word for it as any, she supposed, to actually have done something to her muscles. Now they felt almost… well, frail wasn't the right word, really, but thinner than they should have been.

It was night, or at least everyone was sleeping, and it had quickly become the worst part of Bradley's day. Whatever else Commander Ikari had spiked this LCL with, it allowed her to rest, but never to fully sleep. She couldn't dream anymore. She could barely remember the last time she did, now. It was before she'd been transferred here by Commander Ikari, that much was certain.

Now, dreams were rather… fascinating to her. Not just the aspirations people called dreams, and there was a marked difference, but what people's brains conjured into being. What they meant, or more often didn't, how they shaped what people did in the waking world, and even simply what they looked like from person to person.

'Maybe, when I get out of here and I can do what Daniel and his friends do,' she mused, 'I can dream again.'

Then, she heard the quiet rumble of machinery as the wall in front of her tube began to slide away again, and she opened her eyes to see Commander Ikari standing before her. It was a sight that she hadn't seen in ages. The visor, at least, was still somewhat new to her. She couldn't tell where he was looking. Of if he was even looking at her at all.

Then, the bottom of the tank began to gurgle, Bradley feeling a gentle pull from beneath her as she looked up to see the LCL draining away. She floated for a little while longer, then stood somewhat uncertainly, her legs wobbling slightly as she felt gravity pulling her down after all this time.

Almost on reflex, she coughed up what LCL was in her lungs. That she remembered to do that after all this time both amused and unsettled her in equal measure as the walls of the glass tube rose from around her.

She took an uncertain step forward, stumbling forward and catching herself on Commander Ikari's unmoving form. He didn't even flinch. 'Man,' she thought, 'is what's happening to him really this bad?'

"Shikinami unit," Ikari said levelly. "You are to be transferred to quarters until the time has come to pilot Evangelion Unit-13."

"Can't I at least get a shower first?" Bradley replied as she steadied herself and stepped back, covering herself as she remembered she wasn't wearing any clothes. "And maybe some clothing?"

"You will clean yourself and find clothing at your quarters."

Ikari turned and began to walk off without so much as another word. Bradley followed after him, slowly at first, but picking up speed even as she tried not to shiver too much from the cooling remnants of LCL on her skin.

As they walked, she had questions. Not the sort of questions that would get her answers; she already had plenty of those from Daniel and company. No, she wanted to see what Ikari would say about them.

"So, what's this Unit-13 I'm piloting?" she said after a moment to catch her breath. "I was made to pilot Unit-02."

"Unit-13 is the key to transforming this world."

"And what does that even mean?"

"It is the vessel through which humanity will gain access to the realm of the gods, and supersede them as all become one again."

Well, that was one way to describe ending the world. "What happened to you?" she continued. "Last time, you had a pair of shades. What happened for you to need the visor?"

"A temporary need for this form from before I fully understood."

Bradley was somewhat concerned now. "Understood… what?"

"The truth of this world."

It was such a simple answer, but it left Bradley in silence as she fought not to give him any biting comments. 'Oh, you don't know how little you understand though, do ya?'

Finally, the rest of the trip, taken in silence, came to an end as they stood in front of a massive block of what looked like apartments, and in front of one door in particular. "This will be your quarters until we arrive at the ritual site," Ikari said.

He turned and walked away, leaving Bradley to wander inside, the door shutting behind her.

In front of her was a largely empty room, a small door leading to what she dearly hoped was a shower in the far wall, a single twin bed in front of it, and what looked like a Plugsuit laid across the bed.

"Well," she said as she stumbled over to the door, which opened to what at least resembled a shower, "it's better than what I had before, if nothing else."

She had a cold shower, but at least it was actual water. A plain white towel, hanging outside of the shower stall, gave what warmth the shower couldn't.

Finally, she regarded the Plugsuit that was the only source of clothing waiting for her. It looked much like the Plugsuits she'd seen kid Shinji and Kaworu wearing through Daniel's eyes. What concerned her somewhat was how well it fit, even before she sealed it to her body. 'I've grown, as opposed to just stagnating with whatever 'Curse of Eva' was going on with the others. Did some system measure me while I was in the tank?'

Then, something made the formless unease that had been bubbling in her gut during this little adventure snap into focus. She wasn't a person. She wasn't even necessarily a pilot, really. She was a tool. A commodity. Something she began to feel was becoming increasingly common with Ikari's perception of reality.

'Well, he's got another thing coming, then.' she thought with a grin as she pressed the buttons on the back of the hand, the clunk-hiss sound familiar to her as it clung to her, just as it always had. This, at least, finally felt… right.

. . .

NSS Gebet

Deputy-Commander Kozo Fuyutsuki, a title that meant next to nothing to him now, sat in the privacy of his quarters, his phone to his ear as he hoped that Ikari wouldn't notice what he was about to do.

Finally, the call connected, and a voice he hadn't heard in nearly a decade and a half spoke to him from far, far away. "Hey, Sensei. It's been a while since we've actually talked."

"Hello, Mari. It certainly has been."

For the first time in what felt like days, Fuyutsuki smiled, slight though it may have been.

"So," Mari said, "got something that you wanted to warn us about?"

Fuyutsuki shook his head. "We're on final approach to Calvary Base and should be arriving tomorrow morning, to be in position by tomorrow afternoon. Otherwise, not really. I just… miss talking to someone that I know well."

"I see," Mari said quietly. "Gendo giving you the cold shoulder?"

"Quite frankly, Mari, I'm not even sure that Gendo exists anymore. Whatever's happened to him far transcends even his desire to be reunited with Yui again."

It was silent on the other end of the line as Fuyutsuki waited for her to process what he'd said. "Damn…" Mari said quietly. "And to think that we could just get Yui out of Unit-01 whenever we want to."

Fuyutsuki's eyes went wide as Mari continued. "But we've got a plan, so for now she's going to have to be content inside the Eva for a little while longer. And we're going to have to be content with having all these Reis running around looking so much like her."

Fuyutsuki arched a brow. "And what does that mean?"

"Well, with Daniel coming from another universe, he brought a bunch of duplicates of us with him. So there's two Shinjis, two Asukas, and like 3 or 4 different Ayanamis around. It's nice though, since most of them have different names. One of them is even Ritsuko's adopted daughter."

"And what about yourself?" Fuyutsuki asked. "I would suspect you either enjoy each other's company or drive each other to madness."

It was silent again, and Fuyutsuki's brow furrowed in concern before Mari spoke again. Her voice was choked with emotion now. "It's not me that they brought with them. They brought Mariah. She looks… exactly what I thought she would."

"Oh, Mari…"

He heard the deep breaths that Mari took for a few seconds. "It's been the time of my life, getting to know my daughter for who she might be. Besides, she put me in contact with my Mariah. We've been talking when we can. It's weird to see how… calm I was again."

Fuyutsuki nodded. "I wish I could be with you. But, at the moment, I currently have you beat on the number of Ayanamis that are around me."

"Really?" Mari asked. "How many are there?"
Fuyutsuki's smile faded. "A full crew complement. For each ship. Thousands of Rei Ayanamis."

"My god…" Mari said quietly. "He really pushed the limit, didn't he?"

"That he did. All human life is no longer of any real value beyond its base usefulness to the creature that Gendo has become. I'm not sure even Yui's is of any significance anymore. He's dead. He died when he used that damn Key…"

It was silent as they both mourned the man who had once been his student, her classmate, their friend, even.

Finally, another deep breath from Mari. "Well, will you need help getting out of there?"

"If you can somehow give such aid, then I can't say I'm in any position to turn down the chance to turn myself in."

"Sensei…"

"Mari," he said firmly. "I've been complicit in all of this for the past 30 years. I've done things, and not done things, that any court somehow still functioning would be well within their rights to put me to death over. Even without that, there is still the fact that you and your companions, at the heart of it all, want justice for what has been done to you and this world. And rightly so. I will submit myself to whatever judgment you all deem proper."

"I'm not going to let them just… frogmarch you in front of people who might be baying for some blood without letting people know the sort of good that you've done for us. I know it, Captain Katsuragi knows it, and I'm going to make sure everyone does."

Fuyutsuki chuckled slightly. Mari had gotten so passionate after the accident. It would not surprise him if Mariah was similar in temperament. "At the end of the day, all I've done thus far stems from the regrets of an old man who will be gone soon, however this plays out. Even for how much I'm sure it has helped you now, it cannot make up for what has already passed."

It was silent again, and now that Fuyutsuki had spoken the words aloud, he finally, after so long, felt… content. At peace.

"Well…" Mari said. "I'm glad that you're at peace with at least, Sensei. That's still not going to stop me from trying to help you."

"That, at least," Fuyutsuki said with a weary smile, "has never changed about you. Give my regards to those formerly of NERV. I may well meet them soon."

"We'll find a way to get you out, Sensei. Promise."

With that, the call ended, Fuyutsuki leaning back against the wall his bed hung off of and doing his best to meditate at the next end of the world as he knew it.

It seems the final battle will begin next chapter. From the look of it, the stakes will be far higher than canon. Fuyutsuki knows that he will have to face Judgement for what he has done and failed to do. I won't be surprised if durring the final battle this line from Mega man zero 4 is said.

"Welcome to your front row seat for the end of the world".

She's actually appeared before in Beyond the Gates of Heaven, as the freshest Japanese Eva pilot. But it would not surprise me if she got lost in the mad backlog of other characters introduced in the fic. It's a weakness of it, and it's one I intend to rectify on the PNEUMA pass of the fic.

Chapter 40: The Breath Before Armageddon

Chapter 40: The Breath Before Armageddon

The hardest part of any operation is always the wait.

It's a concept, almost an axiom, that all of us, to some extent or another, understand. But it never makes the waiting any easier.

I can see it in every person here. The tenseness, like a coiled spring, that everyone shows to some extent or another. The forced conversations and smiles, the quiet moments together, out of sight, just in case it all goes wrong. I've heard and seen it all before. But it doesn't make the determination I have to ensure that all goes well any less for it.

- From the personal journal of Daniel Theisman

NHS Gebet, On Approach to Calvary Base, May 14th, 2028

Kozo Fuyutsuki stood on the bridge of the vessel he'd been placed in command of, watching as the Black Moon his ship was in an escort pattern with began to dip towards the waiting shell over Antarctica. Finally, the smaller end of the apple core-like Moon brushed against the shell, tearing a gash of deep red like a wound in its wake as it began to slowly, slowly descend.

'Here we are again.' Fuyutsuki mused. 'The cursed ritual ground of Second Impact. How fitting, to bring another ritual to this place.'

The Vessels were ready. Unit-13 was on track to be activated. And now, Ikari left the defense of the upcoming ritual in his hands. 'It's almost amusing, really. Everything so far has still, even to this point, gone as SEELE would have wanted it to.'

But he knew there was going to be a vastly different experience than even Ikari had planned for.

'I wonder,' he mused idly, 'how the others are preparing for what is about to come?'

. . .

AAA Wunder, Low Earth Orbit

Young Shinji Ikari looked up at the purple giant that had come to define so much of his life. As it had been so many years ago, the walkway that he stood on was at about eye level with Unit-01, and looking into its eyes, seemingly blank yet with hidden depths, felt… appropriate, somehow.

"Shinji."

Shinji looked over at Rei, wondering where they'd found a Plugsuit for her like the one she'd worn 14 years ago, an almost pure white that contrasted strikingly with her blue hair. "Yes?"

"Is there a reason that you wanted to arrive here before Daniel did?"

Shinji looked at the grated floor for a moment. "I guess… I just wanted some time alone with… my family."

It was silent between them for a moment, the busyness of the bay wrapping them in a blanket of white noise before Rei nodded. "I see."

Again, it was silent. "Thank you, Shinji."

Shinji blinked in confusion as he looked over at her. "What for?"

"For doing your best, now and then, to help me become more than I was. Even with everyone else's help, your initial push, as it were, helped me try to become more… human."

"You already were to me, Rei."

Rei looked over at Shinji, smiling slightly. "I see."

They heard someone coming up the ladder and found Daniel finishing his climb, walking over to stand next to Rei. "Good morning, you two. Didn't expect to find you both up so early."

"With what's coming, it's hard to get a decent night's sleep," Shinji said with a shrug. "Even if it's all too familiar now."

Daniel nodded before taking a deep breath and looking at Rei. "Alright. Are you ready to go back in?"

"I shall have to be," Rei replied, taking a quiet breath. "Will this process be… painful?"

Daniel shook his head as he extended his hand. "Not at all. Just take my hand, and we'll become a light that will pierce the core of Unit-01."

Both Shinji and Rei frowned slightly at the wording of it, but Rei took Daniel's hand slowly regardless.

Daniel leaned forward slightly to look at Shinji. "We'll be back soon, okay?"

Shinji nodded, and then his eyes widened slightly as Daniel and Rei… dissolved, becoming pillars of prismatic light that drifted forward, then down, flowing past the chest of Unit-01.

It had all happened so quickly that Shinji barely had time to process it before another beam of light, singular this time, emerged from Unit-01, resolving itself into Daniel, standing before him with a slight smile as he spread his arms, equally slightly. "Ta-da."

Shinji blinked. "Ta-da? Was that supposed to be a… magic trick?"

Daniel shrugged. "If it walks like magic, quacks like magic…"

Shinji smiled slightly. "Then the distinction's kind of useless sometimes, then?"

Daniel smiled warmly in return, Shinji suspecting that he'd found what he was looking for. "That's the spirit. We get so caught up in the science and minutiae of Interfacing sometimes, I think. Too often, we lose the perspective that, at the end of the day, we're doing the sorts of things that we hear in stories, faerie tales."

"Stories like mine, right?" Shinji's smile faded as he said that.

Daniel's smile faded in turn as he sighed quietly. "Yeah. You're not wrong. But on the whole, Shinji… you were an inspiration."

"To try not to screw up the universe you were in on accident?"

"To be kind. To help others see the good in themselves, especially when they couldn't see it themselves."

Daniel walked forward and put a hand on Shinji's shoulder. "You have grown strong and wise, and I am very proud of you."

Shinji nodded. "Thank you," he said softly.

"Always, Shinji."

Shinji frowned slightly as he saw Daniel's lips twitching as if he was trying to stifle laughter. "Is something funny?" he asked rather innocently.

"Well…" Daniel seemed to consider his words for a moment. "It's a story for after we've made the world beautiful again. A somewhat decent one, if nothing else."

Daniel nodded. "Well, I've got to go get some of the others ready. You coming with?"

Shinji considered the offer for a moment, then shook his head. "Not yet. I'd still like some time alone… with mother."

Daniel nodded silently, making his way to the ladder down towards the rest of the engineering bay.

Then, seemingly unbidden, a question leaped into Shinji's mind as he turned. "Daniel? Where did Rei get her Plugsuit anyway? I would have thought they'd have left those behind."

Daniel looked back at Shinji, smiling slightly. "It was in storage in the captain's quarters. Katsuragi seems to have kept one spare all these years."

He paused. "She also kept one of your old Plugsuits, Shinji. I think, even with all these years between, a part of her still held out for the day that you might need it."

Daniel proceeded to disappear from sight, leaving Shinji with much to mull on in the shadow of his mother and sister.

. . .

Mari Makinami sat in the bay with Unit-08, Mariah Marlowe at her side. Most of the crew that worked on the brilliantly pink Evangelion knew what was happening now, and knew to leave the two of them alone. It would have been rude to cut into their conversation, after all.

What Mari saw was a sight well divorced from the hard, mechanical surrounds of their bay in the Wunder. Instead, with a trick that Mariah had taught her double, they sat on that beach in Borneo that Mari had come to cherish for how distant and peaceful it now was, lounging in a sun that shone down with a gentle, if simulated, heat.

The waves of the ocean lapped on the shore, the quiet rumble of it adding to the calm breeze that gusted overhead. It was, for all intents and purposes, the picture of paradise.

And yet, Mari still couldn't shake the anxiety that had doggedly been gnawing at her since all of this started to come to a head. The worst part was that she just couldn't figure out why. Thus, a little time with her daughters (in one way or another), to either figure it out somehow, or at least get away from it for a while as they chatted idly about what those outside the bounds of the Eva had been up to, much to their all-too-literally captive audience's wonder.

Then, at last, it clicked. Here of all places, as she looked at Mariah, her Mariah. Whatever she was going to say next died on her lips as she saw the girl she loved, all grown up, and began to wonder.

"Mother?" her Mariah said, concern scrunching her face just so in a way that felt all too familiar to Mari. "Is there something wrong?"

"You can tell us, mum." the other world's Mariah said encouragingly. "After all, there's not a soul in here watching us. Except us. Y'know?"

Mari nodded slowly. "Yeah. I guess…"

She trailed off as she tried to put what she now knew into words. "All this time… I've spent who knows how long in this time slinky, as you put it, trying to be… something. A scientist. A spy. An Eva pilot. I've even been in charge of the science branch of NERV once, during one of the weirder loops. Once this is all done…"

Mari shook her head. "I have no idea what comes after. And that scares me now a lot more than it ever has before."

"I guess that makes sense." the other Mariah said quietly. "I need to get back and see my mom at some point too. After everything that's happened to her… maybe she'll appreciate a nice vacation here."

"But it's not just that, is it Mother?" her Mariah asked gently. "That's just the start of it."

"I mean," Mari said after a moment, "of all the things that I've done, all the ass that I've kicked, you're still the greatest part of my life. And… I barely know you."

"What do I do once this is done?" Mari asked as she fully looked over at her Mariah. "After everything we've gone through, how do I even attempt to be a parent? I'm able to pilot an 80-meter tall war machine, but if you ask me how to actually act like a responsible adult at this point… I might just accidentally end your world after saving ours."

Mari sighed quietly as she looked down at the sand. "I don't know. Maybe once we're done… I'll find someplace like this. Try at a nice, quiet retirement so that you can find a way through life without me potentially messing it up."

"Mother…" her Mariah said, and Mari looked up as she felt a hand on her shoulder. "Why would I want a life without you? I've spent so long in here, waiting for the day I finally get to hug you again. Please, don't take that away from me."

Mari looked back at the sand, ashamed. "No, you're right. I'm sorry."

"Don't be." her Mariah said, and Mari could hear the slight smile in her voice. "Besides, I'm going to have far more catching up to do in terms of 'adulting' than you are. I'd appreciate your help."

Mari smiled. "Thank you, darling. I'll… I'll try."

. . .

Young Shinji sat against his bunk on the floor, looking at the Plugsuit that he'd managed to get from his world's Misato. It was just as he'd remembered, the lettering and colors on it faded somewhat, and he looked intently at the '01' that was on the sternum of the strange chestplate that had made the suit markedly different from Rei's.

Even seeing it this far removed, memories, some good, many far less so, streamed into his mind. Emotions that he hadn't felt for what seemed like ages welled to the surface. But where he'd impotently given in to them before, he now examined them with the benefit of distance and perspective.

Many of those emotions, he felt, were entirely reasonable reactions, simply exacerbated by the fact that he'd felt them in an Evangelion. A part of him still wished he'd somehow gotten to his father's office before he'd been knocked unconscious. Others, he looked at with regret. Would Misato have become the woman that she had been if he'd simply said goodbye to her?

But regardless, it all led to this. To the decision to put this Plugsuit back on, and get into Unit-01 one last time.

A part of him still rebelled at the idea, agreed with those who whispered behind his back, and gave him glances with narrowed eyes. What would happen if he failed? If he simply ended the world himself, like he'd almost done every time it counted?

"So."

The voice, familiar to him now, jerked his attention up to Asuka, this world's Asuka, standing there in a Plugsuit that looked almost like a carbon copy of her Eva's current color scheme. "Oh. Hi."

"I'm guessing you're agonizing over whether or not to get in the Eva like Daniel's said you should." Asuka continued as she walked over to his side, sitting down next to him.

"I mean, with a track record like mine, a little concern isn't out of the ordinary, is it?" Shinji said somewhat dejectedly.

He was somewhat surprised when she smiled slightly. "Well, at least you're thinking about it with a clear head this time. Hopefully."

Shinji shrugged slightly as he looked back at the Plugsuit. "Well, as clear of a head as I can get right now, at least."

Shinji looked over at Asuka again after a moment's silence. "So, what are you doing here? I would have thought that you'd be going and running some tests on Unit-02 to see how it feels."

Asuka shrugged. "Already did that. Feels just like it did back when I first piloted it against that Angel in the bay."

"That was such a weird Angel."

"Weirder than most."

The two shared a chuckle at the gangly thing that Asuka had killed with such grace.

"You were amazing to watch back then," Shinji said. "I managed to catch a view of it with Misato's binoculars. I was shocked anyone could do something like that with an Eva. It kind of made me want to meet whoever was that good."

"Probably regretted that afterward, huh?" Asuka said with a grimace.

Shinji sucked his teeth for a moment, remembering her sweeping him off his feet in the least romantic way possible. "Just a little. The worst part honestly was how rude you were to Rei. I could take that sort of talk. But to attack someone else who didn't even deserve it… I couldn't stand that."

"Oh, Shinji," Asuka said quietly, in a tone that Shinji had rarely heard from her. It was a soft thing, quiet but loud enough for him to hear the tenderness in her voice.

He waited for a few moments before she continued. "You know, the one thing I hated about you back then was that you didn't seem to have a purpose. You were just plopped into the most important position in the world and didn't seem to take it seriously enough. At least, to me. I mean, purpose was everything back then. I was built to pilot the Eva. You… you didn't even seem to think it was important."

"Then time went on. We faced the Eighth Angel. I got to know you and Rei, at least as much as I let myself then. And…"

Asuka paused as she shook her head. "I actually found myself… liking you."

Shinji looked over at Asuka. "Really?"

"Yeah, actually. I tried to resist it at first. You were an idiot. You were foolish. You were reckless. But you were also kind, and considerate, even when I was an absolute asshole. I started wondering. Then we talked that night, back to back."

Asuka smiled slightly, then the smile faded. "But that was then. So much has happened since."

"Yeah. You're right." Shinji nodded. "We've both changed so much, even though it barely looks like it."

"Yeah."

Asuka was silent for a moment. "But if you manage to save the world, then there's probably going to be plenty of time to figure things out, I think."

"Even with Kensuke?" Shinji said with a slight smile. "He's been good to you."

"He's been an older brother, really. Somebody who can be patient with me. Not a lot of people were willing to do that, especially when it was early on."

Shinji nodded after a moment's silence. "It'll be strange, really."

"What will?"

"Looking as old as we are. If we manage this… we could undo the Curse of the Eva."

"Huh." Asuka paused. "I guess I hadn't thought about that."

She looked over at Shinji. "Well, seeing as you're talking like that, think you can get my eye back when you save the world?"

Shinji sighed quietly even as he smiled slightly. "Well, I can at least give it a shot."

. . .

Toph Beifong had the sense that something was up when Mari Makinami texted her, largely out of the blue, to meet with her. For as friendly as she was, they ran in largely different circles. The mystery only deepened with the stipulation that she bring 'all her bender and non-bender friends from her universe'.

So, now, here they sat in one of the mess halls, waiting somewhat anxiously for Mari to arrive.

Finally, Mari walked in quickly, hurrying to a table and sitting at it. "Thanks for all coming together, guys. It really means a lot to me."

"I'm glad that it does," Sokka said. "But, uh… what do you need our help with that couldn't be explained in your message?"

Mari paused for a moment. "Damn it. I thought I put the context in there."

She shook her head. "Well, you're here so I can explain. Anyways, I need your help to get my Sensei out of the NERV ship that he's in."

"When did NERV take a prisoner?" Toph asked incredulously. "That's hardly been their style… ever."

"Well, it's Deputy-Commander Fuyutsuki," Mari said quietly. "He needs to get off that ship, and he's too damn resigned to his own fate to try and escape himself. Not that there are any escape pods or anything that I know of on these kinds of ships…"

"Okay," Zuko interjected, hands raised slightly. "Wait. He was your teacher?"

"It's a long story that I'd love to tell you later," Mari said. "But he's still stuck on that ship anyway, and after providing us with the information he has, I say he's more than deserving of a chance to be helped himself."

"Have you talked to the Captain about this?" Mai asked. "We're happy to help, but we're scattered all over the ship's different divisions. If she, or even Daniel, could give you some more help, it could make all the difference."

Mari sighed quietly. "I tried talking to Misato. Both of them, even. There's too much invested into what's coming up to divert into an operation as small-scale, relatively speaking, as this one will be."

"And," Mari said quietly, "Daniel actually pointed me to you guys. Said that once things kicked off, you'd need something to do. Even gave me the plans for the ship so that we could brainstorm."

It was silent for a moment before Aang chuckled softly. "Well, once things get started, it's not like I'll have much in the way of logistics to worry about, to say nothing about the rest of us. What were you thinking?"

Mari smiled, wide and relieved, as she pulled up a holographic map of the ship. "Alright. Here's the deal."

. . .

Hikari held Toji's hand as they sat in the mess hall, watching patiently as Mavuto and N'Kani took what ingredients were left, along with what cookware hadn't been thrown out, and made them a rather simple affair. "How's it coming?" Toji asked. "It smells delicious."

"It comes along as it does, Olcani," Mavuto said with a patient tone. "My grandmother's ugali is not a dish to be rushed. Nor the stew to go along with it."

"As fascinating as this is," Kozo Fuyutsuki said, Naoko waiting patiently by his side, "I'd hate for it to be interrupted by the operation and the end of the world."

"I think we have time," N'kani said with an easy smile. "After all, Miss Makinami told us all that we have until the afternoon. Plenty enough time for some brunch. At least, as long as Mavuto's reverence for his grandmother's food doesn't become something of a Sunday mass."

Mavuto elbowed N'kani, who chuckled. "At least I know how to cook something beyond instant meals, university boy."

N'kani rolled his eyes. "Oh, come on. Reheating meals is a scholastic tradition."

"I made my own food in school, thank you very much." Mavuto shot back with a grin. "Even with the generous grant money that went towards the New Central African Republic, I still had to make do."

"New Central African Republic?" their final guest said, leaning back in her chair. "What happened to the old one?"

Mavuto glanced back. "Rolled up into the new one during the African Conflicts, bubblegum. Well, joined it, really. After the end of the old world, even years afterward, it still took time to realize that there was strength in community. That whatever tribe we were, our best hope was in putting aside our differences and working together."

He paused, taking in the seemingly ever-wide-eyed look that Midori gave him, and looked over at N'kani. "And I don't know about West Africa, but I think we've been doing nicely for ourselves since."

"Except in football." N'kani grinned.

Mavuto sighed heavily. "Your teams always paid off the referees, and everyone and their mother knew it."

He paused, looking down at the food. "Ah. But why let a good argument spoil a good meal? It seems we're ready."

Soon, everyone was plated up, with doughy ugali, composed of boiled maize flour, accompanied by a hearty beef stew, and after a quick lesson on dining etiquette from Mavuto, the assembled group dug in.

As they ate, N'kani glanced over at Midori. "I understand Hikari and Toji. I even understand Mr. and Mrs. Fuyutsuki to some extent. But you are a mystery to me, far beyond this world. What brings you to this table, Ms. Kitakami?"

"Well," Midori said after a moment, "my mother was a student of anthropology. Our home was covered in pictures of artifacts, of people from places she'd been before Second Impact wiped most of them out. It rubbed off on me to some extent."

"Then I could guess that the Maasai people no longer exist here?" Mavuto asked quietly.

Midori shook her head. "Not really, no. Most of Africa wasn't protected when Near-Third Impact hit. That made it a mostly barren wasteland except for South Africa."

"Huh," N'kani said with a quiet chuckle. "Figures they would ride it out."

"So, in a sense…" Midori paused. "Continuing her work, as it were, gives me a chance to connect with her again, even though she's gone. She always said… that every person in the world was special because everyone had something to teach us."

Mavuto smiled. "Your mother was wise beyond her years."

"So," N'kani said, "what would you like to know about our peoples?"

"From Toji and Hikari here, I gathered you, Mavuto, were of the Maasai people, from around where Kenya was. I'm going to guess the food was a dead giveaway even if they hadn't told me. But they didn't tell me about you, N'kani."

N'kani nodded. "Well, I'm from the state of Nigeria, which in my world is part of the West African Union. I grew up in the city of Gombe and went to New Abuja University. I joined the military to pay for school and send money back to my family, where I got into piloting helicopters. Then, I was commended by my government to join the Evangelion program. My guess, though, was it was a lottery system. Anyone could have gone."

"And yet," Mavuto said, "you're the one that pulled my ass out of the fire time and again while we were on Rift duty. You've been a good partner to have at my side, kicking ass."

N'kani shrugged. "Well, it's a living, as some might say. But I'm glad to be doing good."

"Were you alive during Second Impact?" Midori asked. "What happened to your countries if you were?"

"Well, we were young," Mavuto said, "but we were alive then, yes. The lucky ones, some might call us."

"Or the unlucky, depending on your perspective," N'kani interjected.

"That too," Mavuto replied. "But, after Second Impact happened, and the trade flowing into Africa as a whole dried up… it was chaos. Some people figured out that making alliances would be the smart thing to do, offering honey instead of a speartip. They were the smart ones. Otherwise…"

"Almost every day, there was news of a new conflict," N'kani said quietly. "Small things at first, coming as people could muster up the troops and supplies needed to fight. Then they kept getting bigger and bigger. Everyone else was too busy with their own problems. Even the extreme religious groups dedicated to spreading religion and terror in equal measure began to make their pilgrimages to various holy sites, convinced it was the end of the world. Soon enough, the first big war kicked off between the DRC and an alliance of the Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, and Angola. That's when the UN finally stepped in with its Armed Response Force. The outside world was finally paying attention to us."

"When did the wars stop?" Midori asked quietly.

"About 2012 was when the last one died down," Mavuto said. "Of course, I'd been out of soldiering for about a year beforehand and started trying to get an actual education."

"I wonder if something like that happened here." Midori mused. "I wasn't even born until 2008. Now, though, with Third Impact having scoured almost all our records of the time before then… well, it's almost like history died in 2015."

It was silent at the table for a few moments, then Kozo shook his head. "I don't know much about the area," he said, trying to change the subject, "but what language, besides English, do you speak, Mr. Okomah-Mordi?"

"It's a language called Hausa," N'kani replied, smiling slightly. "I might be the only one in this world that speaks it, but it is my family's language. A piece of home, you might say."

"What does it sound like?" Midori asked, her eyes wide with wonder that had dispelled the gloom.

N'kani smiled slightly as he checked the time. "Well, I think there's enough time for a small demonstration."

. . .

Shinji Ikari-Soryu held his wife's hand as they relaxed, at least as best they could, in one of the mess halls of the ship that had been converted into something of a lounge, a holographic screen on one wall showing the outside view of space as recorded by one of the hull cameras. Several pieces of comfortable furniture and gaming tables, what remained that hadn't been moved into some storage at Village-3 at least, were scattered around the room.

It was nice to just sit here and be with Asuka for a little while longer, and the company they kept for the moment certainly helped things.

"So," Asuka said to Kotone Suzunami, "what do you do when you're not saving the world?"

Kotone, a somewhat short girl with a head of strawberry-blonde hair and alert brown eyes, fidgeted slightly. Shinji wondered for a moment as to why. "Well, I'm usually a content creator, publishing different kinds of media on the internet or taking commissions."

"What kind of media?" Shinji asked.

"Well, all sorts, really. Online fiction, videos, some music content I dabble with, artwork and animations for commissions. Most of the money I make goes to the orphanage where I grew up."

"And the military just… lets you do this?" Asuka asked, a brow arched.

"Apparently," Keita said with a slight smile, shifting himself off of leaning on Arantxa, "Kotone's something of a PR darling. Went into the public relations branch of the SSDF and gave them a pretty thorough briefing on how to better use technology and up-and-coming social media platforms to integrate with Interfacers and other services full of our generation. Made plenty of friends along the way, too."

"Oh please," Kotone said, blushing slightly. "I just like doing what I'm doing. If it's a good look for the Eva corps, then all the better."

"Maybe you should talk to Midori and Sumire sometime after this," Shinji said with a slight smile. "Midori produces music, and Sumire writes stories herself. Maybe you three could swap techniques or stories to one degree or another."

Kotone's eyes gleamed as she nodded. "That sounds great! I always love getting to know other storytellers."

The conversation ambled on from one topic to another for a little while longer before Shinji looked at Kotone. "So," he said with a slight smile. "Have you rotated through being with HERZ yet?"

Kotone nodded. "I was part of the last group to spend time as part of the HERZ detachment. It was… wild."

"How was properly seeing the inside of the Geofront for the first time?" Asuka asked with a slight grin. "Seeing as you really only saw the inside of the medical wing."

Kotone shook her head. "It was… downright magical, looking at everything from that height."

Before she could continue, the door opened, and all looked over to see Hyuga and Aoba walking in somewhat wearily, newly fitted Plugsuits squeaking slightly as they paused in front of the group. Aoba held in his hand a guitar case, one that Shinji guessed held a glimmering blue-bodied guitar, the man's prized possession along with something he'd become used to playing alongside.

"Oh," Kotone said almost without thinking, "hello, Commander."

It was silent for a moment, Kotone blushing slightly as Hyuga's mouth hung open. "I, uh…" he said after a moment. "Am I really a commander where you're from?"

Asuka sighed quietly. "Well, take a seat and we'll tell you. Sorry to interrupt whatever jam session you might have had in mind, Aoba."

"Please," Aoba said with a slight grin as he landed in one of the nearby beanbags, "this is going to be way more interesting to hear than the same three songs I've been practicing recently."

Hyuga took a seat, a little more slowly, in a chair he pulled into the rough circle that the pilots had made. "So, how did I become commander of… HERZ, I'm guessing?"

"Got it in one, Hyuga," Asuka said with a grin. Shinji was perfectly content to let her tell the story. It'd be more interesting to watch, anyway.

"So," she continued, "as opposed to simply staying as a First Lieutenant, there was some upward movement for you and Misato. After a couple of Angels, she got promoted to a Major, and during Iruel…"

Asuka paused for a moment. "Well damn, I guess that Angel doesn't exist here, does it? Anyways, an Angel composed of nanomachine-like things tried to infiltrate and hack the Magi. Misato gave you the lead on making sure we could take down the thing's physical body while Doctor Akagi fixed the Magi. Commander Ikari promoted you to Captain."

"Wow." Aoba grinned. "You made it all the way above us other bridge birds. I hope it didn't go to your head too quickly."

"Oh, come on, Shigeru," Hyuga said with a roll of his eyes. "It probably didn't mean that much then, anyway."

"Actually, it did," Shinji interjected, glancing over to see Asuka grinning wickedly. "Because you became a captain, NERV sent another First Lieutenant to take your place."

Hyuga frowned slightly at the expression that the two of them began to share. "And who was that?"

"Her name's Adira Faez," Asuka said with an overt innocence. "Ex-special forces, painter, general woman of mystery. And you always liked mysteries, from what I can tell."

Hyuga blushed openly. "Is that all?"

"As far as details we know go, yeah," Asuka said with a shrug. "You two liked each other, NERV got dissolved, HERZ got formed, then Misato stepped down and made you, who'd become the leading major of the Operations Branch, the commander, with Faez your second."

Aoba chuckled openly. "Would that I could have seen the wedding." he mused rather absentmindedly.

"It was actually pretty sweet," Asuka said glibly. "You two were adorable."

Hyuga had his chin resting on his hands, looking at the ground while Aoba grinned. "Hey, if she's ex-special forces, maybe she's around here somewhere."

"I don't know if it would work now," Hyuga said quietly. "So much has changed, the circumstances of us hitting it off is almost impossible now."

It was silent for a moment as Hyuga's expression began to fall. "Hey," Shinji said calmly. "Even without that, after Misato, you were one of the best commanding officers we had. When we went into battle, we knew you had our backs."

"Yeah, man." Asuka piped up. "You're awesome at what you do. Whatever else, you can take pride in that."

Hyuga nodded, smiling slightly. "Thanks, you two."

He paused, chuckling softly. "Of all the people to hear encouragement from, Shinji Ikari and Asuka Langley were the last ones I expected."

"What can I say?" Asuka said with a slight shrug. "We aim to be heroes. It's a simple thing, some days."

. . .

Rei Nagisa strolled through one of the newly made storage bays in the belly of the ship, a recent addition spurred by their need to carry the cargo that was stored within. She walked hand in hand with Kaworu, several other friends accompanying them. All in all, it was a strange thing for Kaworu to call a 'date', even with the wry grin she'd seen on his face. Either way, it gave her a chance to catch up with those she'd trained, and those that they, in turn, brought into 'the business', as Misato sometimes called it.

"How is your husband, Howard?" Rei asked the man, trailing behind somewhat.

"He's doing decently," Howard said with a shrug. "Keeping in touch with Chad is kind of difficult here, but I think he should be settling into one of the government colonies popping up on Luna. I think it's the one by the Sea of Serenity."

"That's good to hear," Orien said. "He's a civil service worker, right?"

"Head of water treatment," Howard said with a proud smile. "He's always said his dream was to walk on the moon someday."

"An unsurprisingly common dream." Galina, who had accompanied Orien, said with a nod. "The stars have always been so frustratingly out of reach for the common man until now. My great-grandfather was on the shortlist to be a cosmonaut before the Soviet Union started to fall."

"Wow. Did he live through Second Impact?" Howard asked.

Galina shook her head. "No. But I think to see his great-granddaughter striding across the stars so easily would have made him proud, and a little envious."

"I would think so," Howard said. Then, he smiled slightly. "And how are things between the two of you?"

"Oh, going as nicely as they can in these circumstances," Galina said flippantly.

She trailed off as they came to a stop in front of one particular item stored here in the bay, whistling softly. "Now, how the hell does that work?"

Rei looked up to see a long staff, capped at both ends by massive saw blades. "I don't know," she admitted with a slight shrug. "But I'm confident that the NERV-Euro branch engineered it to do so."

"Well," Orien said, "I'm sure that Saveli wouldn't mind giving something like that a try."

They continued their walk through the weapons storage bay that held the weapons that Unit-02 and Unit-08 would be using. Other than them, it was empty, leaving them to peruse the bay to their leisure.

Marie, walking with Brynne, stopped for a moment in front of a massive network, likely backpack-mounted, of missile cells as the others started to go on ahead. "So," Marie said quietly, "how's getting used to everything going?"

Brynne took a deep breath. "Doing my best. But even with all the study I've done, the deployments I've been on, this…"

"It's a lot, I know," Marie said. "I get the feeling. But I think you'll do just fine."

"Are you sure?" Brynne replied. "I mean, I know you've put a lot of effort into training me, but trying to stop the literal end of the world while it's happening…"

Brynne shook her head. "I don't doubt you've got my back, but I can't help but feel we're a little in over our heads."

Marie was silent for a moment. "You studied the Angel War, right?"

"To some extent, yeah." Brynne's eyes narrowed slightly. "Why do you ask?"

"Do you want to know what Shinji Ikari's synch score was the first time he stepped into an Evangelion?"

Brynne was silent for a moment. "What was it?"

"Under 50 percent."

Brynne's eyes went wide, and Marie chuckled. "I know, right? That score couldn't even be finetuned like we have it now. It was a matter of training and, frankly, luck. The latter, Shinji had to depend on in spades, because he didn't have any of the former the first time. They didn't have many weapons more advanced than the Pallet Rifle and Progressive weapons until all the pilots were brought together in Tokyo-3."

Marie looked out at the pilots that had gotten ahead of them, focussing on Rei and Kaworu. "And yet, with the deck stacked against them, they faced every Angel that was thrown at them and won. And now, we have advantages I'm sure NERV would have dreamed of having back then."

"Like being trained by people who had fought in the Angel War," Bynne said meaningfully.

Marie nodded. "Yeah. In one way or another, we've all been trained by the best of the best, the pioneers. In some ways, I'm sure at least Shinji or Kaworu would say, we've surpassed them."

She gently punched Brynne on the shoulder. "So stay confident, but not too cocky, and we'll be making another miracle here. I know it."

. . .

Misato Kaji walked the halls of the Wunder, her husband by her side, and what Ryoji liked to call 'the old contemptibles' following behind. They took in the ship with a somewhat detached interest.

"It's fascinating, really," Yui said, looking around her. "For all the familiar concepts we've seen at work in the science of this ship, there are some remarkably novel applications."

"That there are," Naoko replied. "If the Spirits we had in the Valhalla system back home weren't as powerful as they were, the idea of a massive-scale network was tossed around."

"Well," Ryoji said, "with all our rebranding to be 'massive-scale', I'm surprised we didn't stay on theme."

A gentle chuckle from some, a roll of the eyes from others, was the response that Ryoji got before Misato, a slight grin on her face, gently elbowed her husband. "Come on. We already sound like something out of an old '70s anime. We don't need the help."

Ryoji shrugged. "Ah, well…"

Before he could continue, he ducked under a lip in the hallway as he stepped over it, something he'd done several times before. "Damn…" he said as he glanced back at both Gendo and Kozo doing the same as him. "You can really tell sometimes that this ship was made for someone Rei's size."

"Perhaps that might become useful, should we get boarded." Gendo surmised. "Any large people or armatures that find their way aboard would likely find themselves stifled to a certain extent."

"I don't know, Gendo," Kozo said warningly. "The White Cells around here seem to make their way about the ship in decent order."

Before anyone could continue, they heard the gentle thumping of heavy footsteps up ahead, pausing as one of the White Cells in question, this one painted with a uniform gold, rather expertly painted eyes lending it an almost goofy look, began to pass them. Gendo and Ryoji both regarded the thing as they looked up at it, slightly hunched though it was as it ducked under the lip with a seemingly practiced ease.

"I don't quite know what I was expecting," Ritsuko said as she held Maya's hand tightly, "but C-3PO was not anywhere close to being on the list."

"Shows that the crew has a sense of artistic style, at least?" Maya said with a shrug. "Even with the paint job, it still feels… powerful."

The others nodded as they continued on their little walk. "How are things going on your end, Ritsky?" Misato asked.
"As well as they can," Ritsuko said with a quiet sigh. "We've broken through a decent amount of programming blocks, and young Rei, at least before she got…interred, has been directing people on the… well, the unshackling of the ship."

"What do you mean by that?" Ryoji asked.

Misato looked back to see the rest of the adults in various states of discomfort. "Let's just say," Maya said, her face paling slightly, "that this ship is a lot more 'alive' than you might think."

They were largely silent for a moment before they entered the engineering bay. Most gave them a somewhat wide berth, many still eyeing who they now knew to be Gendo with some suspicion. Even with all her history with the man behind her, the looks had begun to grate at Misato.

They came to a stop at Unit-01's gantry, the limbless, dormant giant somewhat obscured by the connections and platforms that surrounded it. The group was silent for a moment as they regarded it.

"Well…" Yui said after a moment. "There I am, I guess."

After a moment, she shook her head slightly. "I hope that, whatever happens, I understand what needs to be done. I would say that I do, but…"

"This is a different universe, after all," Gendo said quietly. "But regardless, this is where Shinji's fight will be. And if there's anything that I am certain of, it's that he understands. And that he will be able to do what needs to be done."

"I have to admit," Misato said quietly, "it's still kind of strange to hear you talk like that."

"It's still strange to me as well," Gendo admitted. "But I must become used to it. Because, at the end of it all, it is the truth."

. . .

Deputy-Commander Fuyutsuki focused again as he watched the Black Moon slide into place, then stop, hanging in the air with an uncanny silence. Below it, the ritual ground, where Unit-13 rested for the moment, hung just above the place where the Second Impact had occurred.

'How poetic.' Fuyutsuki mused. 'Even with your soul gone, Ikari, you still have a penchant for dramatic irony, don't you?'

The vessels were in position, and Unit-13 was waiting. Now, the rest of the players simply needed to come onto the stage.

Then, a rapid beeping drew his thoughts back to the present. "What is that sound?" he asked no one in particular.

"Unknown anomalies have manifested approximately 3 kilometers away." an Ayanami in one of the command center seats said.

"Show me."

A screen folded out in front of him, flashing on to show him what must have been a view from the rear turret of the craft he was on. Several prismatic tears, seemingly diagonal to them had opened up, several more following after them as ships slowly slid out of the fissures in space.

"My god…" Fuyutsuki said, his horror accompanied by a two-tone notification.

"At least 3 vessels match the signature captured over NERV-Euro's Paris branch." the Ayanami unit said tonelessly. "Several larger variants, some larger than this ship, are being recorded as well."

'Wherever you are,' Fuyutsuki silently pleaded, 'get here as quickly as you can. For all of our sakes.'

"Turn about and bring the other vessels into a protective formation," he said after a moment to gather his nautical terminology. "Prepare all cannons for long-range fires. And signal Commander Ikari to inform him of the threat."

This was going to be far more than any of them had anticipated. But Fuyutsuki was hardly in the mood to let whoever these intruders were try and take control of things for themselves.

Chapter 41: Intruding In The Parliament of Conquerors

Somehow, after so long of having a metal arm that feels fuzzy, having Unit-02 back to being whole has been… surreal. But I know it's not going to stay this way for very long.

Daniel loosened Bardiel's 'chains' a few days ago after telling me what was about to happen. Not enough for him to figure it out, but enough for him to be damn annoying. But knowing that we're going into battle, which has been on my mind constantly, has got him settled at least a little.

I'm ready to get rid of this monster that's ruined my life. Whatever else, it's going to feel good having him over a barrel for once.

- From the personal journal of Asuka Shikinami-Langley

AAA Wunder, May 14th, 2028, 1341 Hours

The Wunder was ablaze with activity, those men and women still left on the ship rushing to and from their stations preparing to cast off and descend from orbit. It was time now.

Captain Misato Katsuragi rushed back to the bridge with all due haste, having sent off Asuka and Mari as they boarded their Evangelions. It was a strange thing for her to do, after so long, but she felt, now more than ever, that there shouldn't have been a screen between them when she wished them luck.

As she rounded a corner, she paused, getting out of the way somewhat as what could only be the HERZ pilots began to stream past her, toward the Evangelion bays. For a moment, she simply watched in slight shock as they jogged past. She'd never seen so many Plugsuits in her life.

Then, she blinked as she watched Misato and Ritsuko jogging past in their own Plugsuits, the sight utterly surreal. Misato's Plugsuit was a crimson affair that matched the jacket that they used to wear back in NERV, with bronze accents that reminded Katsuragi of the Yebisu beer she used to drink so freely. Ritsuko's Plugsuit seemed to hint back towards the outfit that she wore at NERV as well, white on the limbs with a blue chestplate and black torso.

"Hey there!" Misato said to Katsuragi as she passed, waving with an almost brazen smile on her face. "See you in the thick of it!"

With that, she went on with the others, leaving Katsuragi to ponder the sight that she had just seen.

"Captain."

Katsuragi found herself surprised to look over and see Eleanor, coming to a stop in front of her. "Is everything ready on your end?" she asked.

Katsuragi nodded. "At least as far as I can tell, yes, now that everyone who can be spared is back at Village-3. Ritsuko says we can turn this thing into a Spear whenever we want, the inner sentry turrets have been fully brought online, and the bays are ready to deploy your Evangelions at a moment's notice."

Eleanor nodded, then looked back from whence she came. Katsuragi followed her gaze to see Shinji turn the corner. It was perhaps the most surreal sight she'd seen, the young man walking towards her in that Plugsuit she'd kept from so long ago.

The boy came to a stop by Eleanor's side. "Sorry I'm late," he said quietly. "But I'm ready now."

Eleanor nodded. "You have Kaworu with you?"

Shinji nodded in turn. "He'll be riding with me in Unit-01. I hope he won't be too rough on my synch score."

"It should be fine," Eleanor said assuringly. "Go on to the engineering bay. I'll meet you there before I go and get ready."

Shinji nodded. "Okay."

He was still for a moment, looking up at Katsuragi. "Misato… thank you for giving me this chance."

Katsuragi sighed quietly before she nodded. "Do your best, Shinji. We're counting on you."

Shinji nodded, then began to make his way towards the engineering bay. Katsuragi watched him leave for a moment, then raised a hand. "Shinji."

He paused in the hallway, looking back at her. "Yes, Misato?"

She smiled slightly. "Do you remember the words I said to you that day?"

Shinji glanced away for a moment. "Do this for yourself. Don't worry about anyone else."

Katsuragi's smile widened slightly. "Make the world you wish to live in. I'd like to see it once this is done."

Shinji's eyes widened slightly, and then he nodded. "I will, Misato."

With that, he turned and walked away, Katsuragi watching until he disappeared.

"Captain…"

Katsuragi looked back at Eleanor and saw her hand held out to shake. "I know we've had our ups and downs during our stay here… but it's been an honor to serve with you here in WILLE."

Katsuragi took the proffered hand, shaking it firmly. "Thank you, Mrs. Theisman. Without you and the others, this wouldn't be possible."

Then, she frowned as she felt something… pulling at her. Like it was trying to lift the skin of her hand. "What the…"

The feeling stopped, and Eleanor retracted her hand and held it up, a disk of what looked like polished sea glass gleaming with an inner light stuck to her Plugsuit's glove. "Soul catcher. Just in case something happens."

Eleanor tucked the soul catcher away. "I want to make sure you see the world Shinji creates."

With that, she turned and began to follow after Shinji. "Good luck."

Katsuragi watched as Eleanor walked away, then turned to make her way to the bridge, her haste returning as she steeled herself for what was to come.

. . .

Daniel Theisman sat at the controls of Unit=00, perched atop his ship on the saucer section as it began to descend towards the deep red storm clouds that waited for them. This time, Shinji, Rei, and Mariah wouldn't be experiencing such a rough descent as when he and the kids had descended on the Hokkaido base. This time, their descent would be relatively controlled, the Aegis Drones deployed around the ship giving it a heat shield as it began to breach the atmosphere.

Daniel glanced back at the ships following them, four other ships unfurling their protections to keep from burning up as they approached. Eleanor would join them in Unit=10 once they'd gotten past the worst of it. But, for now, he simply looked ahead, watching the fires they made and hearing the wind split into thunder as they dove. Then, at last, the fires began to fade, the massive clouds of red obscuring them for long moments.

He felt a thump on the hull beside him, looking over to see the outline of Unit=10, likely having found its way over to him by Eleanor's Sight through this obscurity. In a moment, he strengthened the connection between their souls. "Welcome to the party crashing bus," he said with a slight grin.

"Hell of a party already." Eleanor mused. "You can't even see what's going on yet."

Daniel let his amusement shine through the link for a moment before contacting the bridge of the Val. "Ken, how's our approach?"

"We should be breaking through this cloud layer in the next 30 seconds," Kensuke replied. "Whatever you're going to do to break through, get it ready."
"Wait." Amaya's voice cut into the call as the clouds began to disperse. "Sensors are picking up 5 ships above the barrier."

They emerged from the swirling clouds, the stark white barrier below them. True to Amaya's word, five ships, clearly Scion Revival vessels, circled in a loose formation. And, as they saw them, it was very likely that the Scion vessels spotted them as well.

"I'm getting target locks on us!" Kensuke said, Daniel watching as the main guns of the Val began to hover in their channels. "I'm ready to fire, and I've got the others spreading out in case of area attacks."

"Good show, Ken," Mariah interjected, a note of giddiness to her voice. "But I think we're ready, right Puppy?"

"I'm ready, Mari," Shinji said with what sounded like some excitement of his own, Unit=01 and Unit=08 next to each other near the main body of the ship.

"Alright," Daniel said, smiling slightly. "Initiate Snowpiercer."

Daniel watched the glow of the AT-Field pylons on 01 and 08's shoulders rise in intensity, and after a moment, Mariah spoke again, her voice now echoing slightly as he heard it reverberating from the ships that they approached.

"Gooooood morning, Antarctica! This is Mariah Marlowe, voice of the resistance and your resident tune jockey, here to give those of you who now know your ships have been turned into the best speaker systems in the universe a good time! To let you know who we are, here's a little playlist to get the blood pumping! Hit it!"

Then, silence for a moment as they began their approach, followed by the sound of a song in the distance, growing louder as they got closer and saw the ships clearly beginning to list. "All ships," he said, "you are clear to engage. Take us in, Ken!"

"Coming to flank speed!" Kensuke said with satisfaction as the ship hummed for a moment, their speed visibly picking up as the other ships in their task force came into view, catching the floundering ships in a pincer.

"Fire!" Kensuke said, the main guns glowing purple before releasing lances of Metos, striking precisely at the few Aegis Drones that the ships had managed to deploy, the drones only soaking up a few direct hits before exploding dramatically.

Soon, the sky below the ominous crosses became awash with fire, sound, and fury as the first song finished and another song began to play. The ship that the Val had targeted, maybe a little bigger than the Abjurant, soon went up in a ball of prismatic flame as their Metos Core exploded. But it seemed that the other ships were getting ready to fight back, adjusting their courses as more Aegis Drones deployed to intercept the fire being directed at them.

Soon, Daniel stepped forward, unfurling an AT Field that felt far more powerful than usual as it blocked a shot, like a glowing golden comet, aimed squarely at their midships that had slipped past their Aegis net. The other ships in the task force became far more cautious, Daniel seeing the space around the Abjurant crackle with brilliant Flux chaff as it swirled in a knife fight with one of the ships.

"Are we able to read anything under the surface of the L-barrier?" Captain Katsuragi's voice cut through in Daniel's comms as he watched the Wunder sweep up and over a ship, twisting in the air to present its guns to a newly vulnerable top hull, its nearly automatic cannon fire raking across the ship in question.

"I'm guessing this is about all they can spare if things are going like I think they are," Daniel replied as the Val swept past two vessels, its Metos Lances fully living up to their name as shafts of baleful purple light swept across the hulls of the ships between them. "Even still, stay on your toes! We don't know if they have comms capabilities or not."

Daniel turned Unit=00 to face the ship that had been on their left as they passed, the Stellar Accelerator forming in its hands as its myriad floating sections began to spin rapidly. Daniel lined up a shot on the floundering ship's Metos Reactor, steadying the gun somewhat before, with a crack, a tiny crimson star flashed out, burrowing into the engine section. As Daniel turned away, the vessel exploded in dramatic fashion, the vessel the Wunder dueled with joining it seconds later.

"Alright," Daniel said as he observed the two ships that remained trying to break off, "get ready to follow us in once these two are taken care of."

As he spoke, he saw the flash of Dip Drive portals opening up, the smoking, somewhat burning Scion ships driving toward them without regard for the ships around them. "Are they insane?" Eleanor exclaimed as she saw the jittery and fluctuating portals, clearly unstable. "They're going to get torn apart trying to dip out of here!"

"We can't risk them sending for reinforcements!" Daniel said as he aimed his Stellar Accelerator at the ship closest to them. "Take them out!"

With that, all the weight of fire that 5 warships could bring to bear rained down on the two ships. Sweeping through their Aegis nets in seconds, the two ships went up nearly simultaneously, the Dip portals flickering out of existence.

After a tense moment Daniel spent waiting for anyone else to join the party, he breathed a quiet sigh of relief. "Damage reports?" he asked a general comm link he opened to the other ships.

"We're down a few Aegis Drones," Captain Williamson replied. "Otherwise, minimal damage that the repair teams are dealing with now."

"We're largely undamaged as well." Commander Kaji said aboard the Wunder. "Thank god for our AT Field."

"Minimal damage here, sir," Percival replied. "It seems your sonic attack was terribly effective."

Daniel smiled slightly at the completely satisfied Mariah. "Hussar Defiant, what's your status?"

Silence. "They look alright from here," Kensuke replied. "Maybe their comms got knocked out during the fight. Any personal comms you can detect on there, Amaya?"

"One moment," Amaya said.

After a minute or so, another call, voice-only, appeared in Daniel's view. "This is Captain Hrrikitari of the Hussar Defiant." a slightly buzzing voice came through. "We have sustained damage to our communications systems that should be repaired shortly. Otherwise, this attack was effective."

"Alright," Daniel said as Unit=00 strode towards the front of the Val, Rei in tow. "Now comes the hard part. Kensuke, get ready to take us in, just like we planned. Everyone else, form up behind us."

"Got it. Bringing us into position." Kensuke said as the Val began to tilt up, swooping into the air until it reached about a kilometer above their target, the ship tilting forward.

"Ready, Rei?" Daniel said as he focused, a circle of stars appearing right where their prow would hit.

Rei simply nodded, Unit=05 reaching out in front of the ship. In a moment, a massive, wide blade that gleamed in the sunlight was floating a few meters in front of the vessel. "Ready," Rei said calmly.

"Alright," Kensuke said. "We're going in!"

With that, the Val surged forward, the other Evas standing atop it gathering towards the center of the craft. After a moment that seemed agonizingly stretched out, the ram slammed into the surface of the barrier, the hexagons flying away from the impact with a sound like shattering porcelain, the ship splashing into what looked like a sea of LCL and continuing its mad dive. "Shinji, Mariah," Daniel said, "make some space for the wings!"

Unit=01 and Unit=08 reacted almost instantly, twin jets of blaring sound sweeping out to the sides, as the circle of stars followed the prow of the Val, carving a channel of clear space through the liquid and forcing it out, expanding as the Wunder came in behind them.

Down and down they dove, through the L-barrier's liquid stage, a place that lasted for long moments as bubbles floated past them, an empty sea still carrying with it a sense of foreboding, an unnatural calm before the storm. "Should I dismiss the ram head?" Rei asked.

"Not yet." Daniel replied, staring ahead at the shifting, twisting, and writhing sea 'floor' that waited for them. "We might need it to clear the path."

Rei nodded before they reached the bottom of the liquid, the Val bursting from the sea that was now above their heads to crash into a wave of massive bodies, the ram flinging the Failures of Infinity that floated in front of them out of the way, the massive tunnel that Daniel maintained with an ease that only a High Metos Level environment could provide keeping their descent quick.

Even still, it was, to some extent at least, unnervingly quiet as they passed between 'layers' of Failures. "Man," Mariah said as she watched Evangelions emerging from the ports on the Wunder's back, "is everybody really down there slugging it out?"

"I wouldn't doubt it," Shinji replied. "If there are 30 ships down there, they've probably got NERV's attention and then some."

"How close to the Black Moon, Amaya?" Daniel asked.

"We'll be reaching our destination in about 2 minutes at present speed," Amaya said. "Get ready."

Everyone braced themselves on the Val's surface accordingly, Daniel relaying it back to the pilots behind them, who were just about ready now. They could see flashes through the bodies, hear in the distance explosions and weapons fire muffled by the bodies that surrounded them.

Daniel took a deep breath, bracing himself, as he was sure the others were, as they hit what was likely the final layer of Failures of Infinity that separated their ship from the hell that awaited them.

Finally, they broke through, emerging into a scene that, indeed, looked like a level out of the Inferno. Several ships were falling to the barren earth below in flames, far more active bodies of this world's mass-produced Evangelions, tan-gray things that had barren skulls, swirling around and through the embattled formation of Revival ships. The Revival's Herald Units, shot through with veins of glowing gold and obviously empowered by Tavis, cut through them in droves, hundreds, thousands even, of cross-shaped explosions dotting the sky and in various states of fading.

And in the center of it all, two beings of immense power clashed, a purple giant with twin Spears, and a being of white and gold, seemingly far removed from the Herald Units Daniel knew it had come from, wielding a massive golden sword.

"My god…" Misato said, Daniel glancing back at the Wunder. "Talk about Armageddon…"

"Alright everyone," Daniel said to a general channel as the rest of the ships began to form up, the Wunder in the center of a formation of the others at compass points, "It's time to get really friendly with speed because that's going to be how we win this. Escort squad, watch for me and Eleanor to draw the Hollow Saint away from Unit-13. Striker squads, use your AT Fields or Interfacing to take flight and harass enemy elements. Remember the priorities; ships, Herald Units, other Evas. Shield squads spread out across the task group, and make sure nothing touches the Wunder until phase 2. All clear?"

A shout of understanding and compliance echoed through his comms, and Daniel smiled. "Alright. Let's go make a miracle! Move out!"

As a cloud of Evas lifted into the air like charging valkyries, Daniel saw Eleanor come to his side as the glass ram disappeared. "Ready?" she asked on a private comm line.

Daniel nodded, aiming the Stellar Accelerator squarely at Hamar'ramah's back. "Hey there," he whispered. "Here I am."

With that, he fired, the shot arcing across the remaining length between them for long seconds before a tendril of gold batted the shot into a passing flight of mass-produced Evas. Daniel fired again, then again, the Herald Eva finally turning to face them after the fourth shot it deflected. In the place of the usual worm-like head, it looked at them with a humanoid helmet with a sunburst of rays above his brow. And Daniel knew that, somehow, it was looking directly at him.

Daniel and Eleanor linked their souls, becoming almost one as they lifted off on wings of starlight and white-capped water, swooping towards the Hollow Saint waiting patiently for them as the guns of the task force behind them began to open up on the rest of the fleet.

Deflecting a swipe of the Spears from Unit-13, it flew towards them on strands of golden light that lashed out at them as Daniel and Elanor came close. Daniel's Stellar Accelerator shortened into a rifle that he used to pepper the Herald Unit, Eleanor diving in close to swing a massive battle-ax at it, the pair clashing ax to sword as Daniel's shots arced around Unit=10.

Its tendrils, dripping with mist, swirled and struck at Eleanor as she dodged and weaved as if swimming through the air, tendrils of her own forming from her wings to clash with the Hollow Saint's. Several dozen tendrils extended as they swooped out towards Daniel, his rifle becoming a gunblade as he switched his targeting to the tendrils, slicing and shooting the whip-like attacks. More than a few managed to get through his defenses, Daniel only taking grazing hits through dexterity enhanced to the Third Peak and an absurd amount of luck. Luck that was running out as the wounds steadily grew deeper and deeper.

'We didn't expect to keep this up forever, but this…' Daniel thought, wincing as a golden tendril sank into his chest. "Nynrya!"

Before he could continue, he felt a bloom of heat on his back, one that he suspected should have been far hotter than it was.

"I'll watch your back, Daniel!" Nynrya said. "We have warships starting to focus on us!"

Daniel didn't need to look behind him to know that Nynrya was probably right. "I think I have a better idea!" he replied as he desperately tried to balance everything around him with the added bonus of weaving an Expression that he had built before coming to this Echo.

"Hurry!" Nynrya cried as Daniel watched Eleanor's ax flying away from a strike by the Hollow Saint, Eleanor barely catching the blade as it dove towards Unit=10's core. The blade shuddered from the strength that the Hollow Saint pressed it, the tip slowly growing closer and closer.

'Just a little more…' Daniel thought, tamping down the panic as several golden lashes wrapped around Unit=10, keeping her from escaping. Then, the pieces within him clicked. 'Done! Let's hope I do good by you, Mothra!'

His Unit's wings glowed, and from within, a massive tide of stars shot out like glitter, spreading out and floating throughout the space. As it reached the Herald Unit before them, touching the tendrils, the stars began to burn through them, finally releasing Unit=10 after several tendrils had been scorched away.

As Daniel floated towards the dueling Evas, the second effect he'd threaded through the Expression revealed itself as he watched what was likely a shot from another enemy Seabreaker twisting away from them, darting between stars as Eleanor deflected the blade, reforming her ax and hacking at the Hollow Saint.

"Alright," Daniel said to Nynrya, "now you and I can focus on taking the fight to Hamar'ramah."

"With pleasure,"
Nynrya replied, her blades swooping back around into his sight to clash with the Hollow Saint.

It wasn't much, but it would give them a little more time. "Escort team," Daniel said, "If you aren't moving already, get going now!"

. . .

Asuka Shikinami-Langley stood on the wing of the Wunder and couldn't help but stare at the absolute chaos that now surrounded her. The sheer variety of lights, sounds, and effects that swirled in front of the eerily silent Black Moon. Squads of friendly Evangelions, pairs, trios, and four-man squads, hopped from ship to ship, slipping past shields and laying waste to weapons, hulls, and engines. The dark reflections of their ship took advantage of the new chaos, rising through the cloud of enemy ships on waves of scores and scores of Evangelions that Hyuga had identified as the 'Mark.07' and laying waste to those vessels around them.

She was surrounded by 5 other Evangelions, with Mari escorting her alongside Strasburg, Vincennes, Cavey, and Falkenrath. They were all wildly different from each other, and yet it lent them all a strange sense of unity; a ragtag group brought together to accomplish one thing to the best of their ability.

So when Daniel gave them his signal, they lifted off from the wing of the Wunder as one.

As they glided toward their prominent target, in the midst of a duel with several Herald Units, one already tumbling towards the earth, Asuka heard Vincennes call out on the comm channel that they shared. "Any strike teams near our position, help us punch a hole to our target!"

As the Evangelions around her manifested weapons of many different kinds, Asuka simply stretched out her hand, thinking of the chaingun in the Wunder's storage bay, her thought answered as it appeared in her waiting hand thanks to specialized transponders attached to the weapons. She brought it around, seeing an oncoming wave of Mark.07s that was crashing towards their charge. 'Perfect.'

She steadied the gun, and simply held the trigger down. The spray of Anti-AT Field rounds causing the Marks ahead to explode into brilliant crosses was its own reward. But it was hardly alone, as a barrage of elements, energy, and physical rounds crashed into the oncoming wave of bodies with a force all its own, those few strike teams that could lend a hand sending heavy munitions their way as well.

They dove through the cross-shaped explosions like crossing through a fireworks display of their own making, the chaingun running hot, then running dry. She used it like a club for a few moments, batting away Mark after Mark, then threw it into an oncoming half dozen of them, reaching out in front of her for her next weapon.

A massive shield, its front covered in missile tubes, appeared in her hand, and she held it in front of her as she waited for the target acquisition to complete, then triggered the massive storm of missiles that arced away from them, sweeping towards the Marks and making even more glowing crosses bloom in front of her. It made her grin giddily, that old thrill of piloting her Evangelion flaring to life within her as she used the now somewhat useless hunk of metal as a plow to cut a swathe through those Marks that her escort didn't manage to get out of her way.

"Heads up!" Falkenrath shouted. "MP… Herald Units inbound!"

As Falkenrath finished speaking, Asuka yelped as glowing claws, like AT Fields, speared through the metal unit she held like so much paper, stopping only inches away from Unit-02's face before slicing the rest of the shield in half. The mug that leered eyelessly at her was a familiar one, but the Eva that she'd seen in Terminal Dogma was now shot through with golden lines forming geometric shapes all around the body.

Asuka scowled as she used the halves of her former shield like a club, one after the other slamming into the Eva before being tossed away as she summoned a rather more appropriate weapon.

The strange circular-saw-headed polearm was there in an instant, the covers snapping open and the blades beginning to howl as she shouted, bringing the weapon down on the pallid thing in front of her after nullifying its rather considerable AT Field. The blade bit and tore, gouts of LCL, blood, whatever the hell these things had inside them spraying everywhere as the Herald Unit struggled to escape.

Eventually, it succeeded, its skin bubbling and twisting as it did its best to piece itself together. But Asuka charged ever onward, slashing with both ends of the polearm in a series of strikes that was almost like a dance, each move sending more and more blood flying away.

Finally, the Herald Unit disengaged, Asuka shouting in triumph. Her celebratory attitude was cut short as she watched one of the Heaven's Key vessels rising up, far too many of its eye-like turrets focussing on them for her liking.

But the flash that lit up the vessel's surface was instead its AT Field as what was either fire from the task force or the fleet that now surrounded them began to lay into it, the flashing whirs that always seemed to set her on edge instead directed over their heads. For now, that was enough. Unit-13 was close now.

That it turned from the scattering Herald Evas to regard her, in particular, sent a shiver down her spine, Bardiel within her jibbering in fear. A part of her hated how the Angel inside her had to be 'loosened', but with what was coming next, Asuka needed to trust Daniel's judgment and skills. 'Besides,' she mused grimly, 'I'd hate to leave Bradley all alone in there.'

"Alright," Vincennes said, "we've got as straight a shot as we'll get to the target! Mari, watch our backs. Everyone else, pin this thing down, and don't let the Spears touch you!"

With that, her escort flew forward towards Unit-13, which met their charge with patient waiting. As Falkenrath and Strasberg made contact first, they deftly dodged the first jabs of the Spears it held, Vincennes and Cavey batting them out of the way with spears of their own of flames and thunder as the first strikers made their way behind the massive Eva.

As Unit-13 did its best to keep up with the withering barrage of attacks, a pair of AT Fields like manacles flashed into existence on the wrists of its second pair of arms, slowly dragging them off of the hafts of the Spears and back almost painfully.

Unit-13's eyes flashed, Vincennes and Cavey veiled in an explosion that sent them flying away, Mari pausing from laying into a wave of Marks that had made their way towards them to catch them with an AT Field of her own, springing them back into the fight. As that happened, however, Unit-13 flew back, sweeping the Spears out to try to try and catch Falkenrath and Strasberg unawares.

As the two pilots swooped out of the way, two more AT Field cuffs appeared on the other arms as the cuffs expanded to lock the arms in place. "Cavey!" Strasberg called out. "Try locking this thing's body in place. We're going to be here all day otherwise."

"Good call! I'll keep its eyes shut!" Vincennes said as Cavey raised a hand, an AT Field wrapping around Unit-13's lower body while a thick AT Field from Vincennes wrapped around the Eva's head, a glow from behind it appearing for a moment before disappearing as Unit-13 struggled against its bonds.

"Alright, Asuka!" Vincennes said. "I don't know how long this is going to work! It's now or never!"

Asuka took a deep breath, retrieving the Shutdown Override Plug from the mounting on her back, then charged with a shout as the Plug in her hands primed, becoming a cross-shaped stake that she aimed squarely at the core of Unit-13.

Then, she felt a tug in the back of her head as she slammed to a stop, an AT Field blooming into existence and stopping the Override Plug dead in its tracks, inches from the core. "No!" Bardiel at last shouted. "I am free! Don't make me go back! I will not be chained again!"

"Damn you! Just let me do this!" Asuka shouted in return, trying to break the Field with all the strength she could muster. But even still, with only a sliver of herself in Unit-02 proper, Bardiel's presence overridden her, and the Field held strong.

"Fine!" she spat. "We'll do this the hard way, then!"

With that, she tore off her eyepatch, revealing the socket underneath. Within, the top of it rising out of the socket, was the small ACC Pillar that Doctor Akagi had inserted as a last line of defense against the Angel. Here, in the Evangelion, it was also the last thing preventing her from becoming what Shinji had been that fateful day in Tokyo-3 all those years ago.

Right now, becoming like Shinji suited her just fine.

She grabbed hold of the Pillar, shouting in pain as she pulled the damnable thing free. Slowly at first, slowly, then all the rest at once, the Pillar came free, her eye becoming whole again as both of them began to glow a brilliant blue.

"We're gonna do this together," Asuka said as the Pillar floated to the bottom of the Plug, "or I'm going to rip your AT Field apart to do this."

She took a moment to take in the power that she felt, seemingly boundless. Like she could do anything she needed to save the world. 'This was how important Ayanami was to him.' she realized. 'This was how important I was.'

She reached within herself, within the Evangelion, and reunited her soul, then took the straining, panicking Bardiel and lashed it to herself. It was… so simple. But even now, she could feel the change beginning, more fundamental than any she'd experienced yet.

"Get clear! Sh-" was the last thing Asuka heard Mari say before the Plug's power cut out. But it didn't matter, as she felt the Evangelion she was in in a way that she never had before. She could almost see the transformation that it was undertaking, energy blooming within Unit-02 and exploding from it, the new body she commanded growing and growing in stature as the Override Plug became a massive cross in its hands. After a moment, Unit-02, orange ribbons where its pylons once were flapping in the wind, towered over Unit-13, which now, even freed from its bonds like it was, stayed oddly still.

Even still, Bardiel's AT Field stubbornly remained, the Angel still acting as best he could in defiance of his fate. "Fine, then!" Asuka said, willing the ribbons on her shoulders to become another pair of arms that flashed down to Bardiel's AT Field. "I'll tear this open!"

She pulled the AT Field apart with all her might, Bardiel still putting up the best fight that he could. But even an Angel couldn't compete with someone as strong-willed as Asuka having ascended to near godhood. At last, the AT Field tore, and the cross began to descend on its target.

At last, though, Unit-13 acted, its eyes flashing with power. And in an instant, her hands were gone, the Override Plug consumed in the blast. Asuka screamed in pain, her hands glowing a brilliant red.

As her concentration slipped, she could feel her form shrinking, the energy that she had gathered scattering as Unit-13 drew closer and closer. Finally, Unit-13 reached up, grabbing Unit-02 firmly by the neck. Asuka forced herself to breathe through the immense sympathetic pain.

Finally, she felt Unit-13 drive its remaining free hand through her sternum, reaching for a moment before grabbing hold of what she knew was her Entry Plug. 'Come on…' she thought now, feeling Bardiel being drawn away to parts unknown within the Plug. 'Daniel better be right about this…'

Then, as the plug turned a deep, shifting blue, she saw a curtain of white part at the far end of the Plug, a silhouetted figure stepping through and floating over to stand on top of her controls.

Asuka Langley breathed a sigh of relief as Asuka Bradley crouched down in front of her. "Thank god, you actually made it. Did Commander Ikari notice you?"

Bradley shook her head. "I don't think so. I've barely been able to feel him while we've been active. It's like he's focusing on something else while I stay in the driver's seat. I get feelings, directives maybe, but not much more than that."

Langley sighed. "Well, then let's hope us being here doesn't spoil the plan to him."

Bradley nodded, then looked past Langley. "What the hell…"

Langley looked back then saw a piece of core material growing on the side of her Plug, metastisizing like some malignant tumor. "I guess Bardiel's staking his hopes on not being noticed in here."

Bradley shook her head. "Well, ready for the next part?" she said as she held out a hand.

Langley took it. "As I'll ever be. They'd better not screw this up out there."

Bradley simply smiled as they returned, Langley letting go of her form as her soul drifted into Unit-13, to a place where she would be kept safe by Bradley. All part of the plan. But somehow, Langley thought as she left Unit-02 behind, this was supposed to be the easy part.

The first song was Nothing's Gonna Stand In Our Way, like I've linked in the text (because quite frankly, The Transformers: The Movie's whole soundtrack deserves some modern rep). But I'll certainly take it as the next song in the playlist that gets mentioned later.

Having gotten Studio One Artist and with my eye on a decent Arturia MIDI keyboard, some VSTs, and classes on music production, I'm dearly hoping to put together my own little Apotheosis Symphonia at some point in the near future. So, prepare for at least Version 1s of original music sometime in PNEUMA's future.

The name of the song fits how dramatic the stakes are, that's for certain. It's also quite the banger as well.

Asuka: Orchestral music always needed more electric guitar anyway.

Shinji: Are you sure about that? As good as it is, a little simplicity goes a long way.

Well, he may not be looking to destroy this particular universe, but should it really come down to it, this is certainly a potential option for him, with the destruction stretching far past the local galaxy and unraveling the entire Echo, given enough time (which is not much!).

Chapter 42: ... No Hiding Place

Chapter 42: … No Hiding Place

It feels… strange, sitting in the Entry Plug of Unit-01 again. But somehow, it feels right. Like settling into well-worn clothes.

If I focus, then I can feel them there. Not just Mother, not just Rei, but millions upon millions of other souls. All attuned to me. All ready for something, anything to happen.

Am I ready? The question feels a little silly. Whether I'm ready or not, what's coming next will happen. But I've been prepared now. Done more than just sit in an Entry Plug.

And that's going to make all the difference, I think.

- From the personal journal of Shinji Ikari

AAA Wunder, Above Antarctica

Captain Misato Katsuragi watched the end of the world happening right outside her ship, frozen in shock at the monster that Unit-02 had become. And how easily Unit-13 had destroyed it and the Override Plug that they'd pinned their hopes on before this plan. It made it look so… easy for it.

"Ma'am," Aoba said, looking back from his monitor, "We've lost vital signs in Unit-02. The Plug has gone dark."

"Just like we expected." Commander Kaji… no, right now, he was Ryoji, said grimly. "Hope that Bradley pulled her into the Eva in time."

"Captain!" Kitakami shouted. "I'm picking up an Eva on an intercept course with us!"

As she finished speaking, the Eva in question, clad in an orange chest plate and pylons against a body of black and a teardrop-shaped mask with a prominent X across its face, a line below it to the pointed chin, landed on a section of the ship that had a camera, seeming to leer into the aperture to stare at them.

Akagi looked back at Katsuragi, her expression serious. "Pattern confirms that it's the Mark.09. They rebuilt it into a new type of Eva."

"Picking up digital contact from the Eva!" Hyuga said. "It's attempting to physically enter the ship!"

"Give it the designated systems!" Ritsuko said from behind her. "Prepare to lock down what we can before we lose access."

"Well," Ryoji said, "looks like our time in the saddle is up for now."

A warning screen, red and black, flashed into view, reading 'Reversion to Buße Programming Initiated."

"Guidance controls are offline," Nagara said calmly as the screen flashed off, the gaudy symbol of SEELE overlaying itself everywhere on the screens.

"Mark.09 is through the VD firewall gate. Still attempting physical access." Aoba said, an edge to his voice.

"Crap!" Tama said, "We're going unauthorized access of locked down systems! It's breaching our firewalls!"

"Activate Addendum 666!" Akagi shouted. "Make sure it-"

Before Akagi could continue any further, the Hirnstamm capsule went flying out of its locked position, the screens going black before the leaves of the capsule split open, the bridge crew bracing for the impact and still being jostled as the locks for the bridge clicked into place.

"666 has been activated!" Tama said. "Progress on hacking of locked down systems has slowed considerably."

"What about the other Heaven's Key-class vessels?" Katsuragi asked.

"They're disengaging the Scion fleet, descending rapidly towards the underside of the Black Moon," Kitakami replied. "And…"

She looked back at the command staff. "The Scion ships have stopped firing on them. They're clearing a path for the other ships."

Katsuragi was silent for a moment, then nodded. "Take us down with the Vessels if you're still able to, Nagara. It looks like we're up now," she said grimly.

Nagara nodded, and the Wunder drifted away from the formation that had thus far protected it. "Inform the rest of the task force to maintain distance, but descend with us." Katsuragi continued, taking a deep breath. "I don't think this little shooting match is over just yet."

"Otherwise," she continued as she looked over at Akagi, "inform the rest of the crew to begin final preparations on the conversion of the ship. Whatever else, we'll be ready for that."

As the ship drifted into place, Katsuragi, along with the rest of the crew, watched as best they could as the three sister ships of the Wunder began to glow, the crystals that took the place of the Wunder's radar dishes screeching as pillars of prismatic light lanced out from them, stretching into the sky to become wings of light. Wings that stoked old memories, old fears, in Misato Katsuragi.

Beneath them, the red ripples parted, revealing that massive, many-winged form that had been etched on the surface of Antarctica where Calvary Base had once stood.

"It's almost fascinating."

Katsuragi looked back at Akagi with some consternation as she continued. "Up until now, Ikari's been following SEELE's plans for Instrumentality almost to the letter. Now, here, we're seeing the implementation of forces far beyond what even they could have imagined. Another Impact. A Final Impact."

As they spoke, the Black Moon split in half, each part becoming almost clay-like as they molded themselves into a new form, a form almost like an unfurled Spear, containing within it the night sky above as its points faded into a familiar crimson color.

"We have an intruder on the bow deck!" Aoba said, pulling up a camera feed and sending it to the main platform.

True to his word, there on the outer hull of the ship stood a single figure, a human that was eminently familiar. "Commander Ikari…"

Then, Katsuragi jumped slightly as her phone rang. She picked it up quickly. "Yes?"

"I see that Commander Ikari has landed on the surface of the vessel." the other Gendo Ikari replied. "You still require time for your preparations."

"Yes. What are you suggesting?" Katsuragi asked.

"Yui and I will go up there and ensure that you have adequate time for the preparations at hand," Gendo replied firmly. "I suspect it might come to blows."

It was silent for a moment as Katsuragi considered the offer. "Very well. But I have some business with him as well."

"I see." Gendo paused for a moment. "The Fuyutsukis and young Miss Akagi will remain to assist your engineers. I am confident that they will ensure the readiness of this vessel. Good luck, Captain."

It was perhaps one of the strangest things she had heard today. "And good luck to you as well, Co… Ikari."

The call ended, and Katsuragi looked over at Akagi and Kaji. "Alright. Let's go and talk to the Commander."

. . .

The being that had been Commander Gendo Ikari stared up at the sky that surrounded him, taking in a sight that, while tarnished by outside forces, was still well within the bounds of the plan that had been set out in a time long before this frail form. The Black Moon, the final key, hovered above, as ships from unseen shores continued to battle the altered shells of humanity's interstitial stage. Flames, energy, light and darkness plumed all around him, almost framing the scene in a way that Ikari would have found almost artistic. Seemingly at the center of it all, the being that he had dueled with now clashed with two other Evangelions, their power seemingly on full display.

"It's been quite some time, Commander."

He turned and saw Colonel Katsuragi, Doctor Akagi, and the rather surprising sight of Inspector Kaji standing before him. "I commend you for your work, Colonel Katsuragi," he said simply. "Now, however, this ship will fulfill the role it was designed for."

Before he could continue, a shot cracked through the air, slamming into his visor and sending him reeling for a moment. "Ah. Doctor." Ikari said as he regarded both her and the inspector with their guns raised. "I see that you now shoot first and ask questions later. Even still, you show no hesitation when it comes to accomplishing your goals."

"I learned from you, after all," Akagi said coolly, then pulled the trigger again, then again and again, the inspector joining in as they unloaded into the head and body of the man that had orchestrated so much of this world's sorrows.

As Ikari's body hit the deck, his blood and brains splattered across the metal, Akagi kept her eye on the man. Then, all their eyes went wide as he slowly rose to a knee, gently taking a chunk of brain matter in front of him and placing it into the hole in the back of his skull that her shots had made.

"Gods require no barriers. No cages." Ikari said calmly as the last remnants of his visor fell from his face. In place of his eyes, a gaping maw, from which a light that burned red at its fringes emitted, split the top of his face, another crack perpendicular to it aligned with his nose. "We accept all things that come to us and adapt accordingly. This is the godhood humanity so feebly possesses."

"Is that what the Key of Nebuchadnezzar does to someone after this long?" Kaji asked. "I'm glad I was able to get it out then. Maybe there's hope left for you, too."

"I have appended upon this body information and power that transcends the logic of this realm," Ikari replied. "My humanity has been magnified by the power of the first creators."

"I somehow doubt that."

Ikari turned his gaze and saw a man and woman approaching. The man seemed familiar, from his voice to the way his hard blue eyes seemed to pierce into who he looked at. "You've shed your humanity," the man said, "just as I would have in your place before now."

Ikari regarded him, then the woman standing beside him. And a distant part of his mind snapped the puzzle pieces together and started screaming.

On the surface, Ikari was silent for a moment. "There are no problems, mirror image," he said simply.

As if on cue, the massive, gory head of Unit-02 splattered to the deck, narrowly missing all of them as what had tossed it began to rise before them. "I will slay what Gods remain, bind their power with humanity, and through the sacrifice of the Angels, complete the gathering of humanity's souls into a new God, through Complementation and Instrumentality."

All but Ikari looked up and saw the Entry Plug that was clasped in its jaws. "And you would sacrifice as many versions of Asuka as you need to," Katsuragi said in disgust.

"The Shikinami type, as the Ayanami type before it, was prepared for this moment," Ikari said, commanding Unit-13 behind him to complete the sacrifice. "There are no problems."

Unit-13 bit down on the Plug, splitting it down the middle as a flash of light burst from it, the Eva returning to that luminous white as the massive Spear that floated past them picked up speed.

Then, Katsuragi pulled out a phone, her eyes going wide and face pale. "What?" she said numbly.

"We're on our way! Contain them!" she said a moment later, putting the phone away and pulling out her gun. "Keep him busy!" she said to his mirror image as Akagi and Kaji ran with her.

Then, they were alone together. It was silent for a few moments, the two staring at each other as the Spear pierced the veil between this world and the Minus Space, a rippling burst of prismatic light followed by an eruption of massive purple beings, much the same as the Failures of Infinity that wheeled above them began to flow towards them.

"So this is it…" the mirror image of Yui said. "The gathering of all life that has ever existed on Earth…"

"Is this what's required to begin the Final Impact?" Gendo mused as the beings flew over them and around them, the entire battlefield becoming cloaked in the writing mass for terrifying moments.

"Yes," Ikari replied after a moment's silence. "As the Second Impact purified the oceans, and the completed Third purified the land, the Fourth, Final Impact will gather and purify all souls for their ascension. These Infinite Evangelions are the materialization of souls, and through them, humanity will blossom from this seedbed of life we call Earth, to grow to an unsullied paradise where we shall command the universe itself."

It was silent again, the Infinite Evas thinning out before Ikari continued. "With Second Impact, Doctor Katsuragi proved the validity of his Instrumentality Theory, allowing SEELE to feebly grasp at a lesser glory."

"If there is anything I know about Misato Katsuragi," Gendo replied, "it is that she will not allow the culmination of that theory to come to pass."

"Then she is a fool," Ikari replied. "Possessing the Fruit of Knowledge, only two paths remained for humanity. To be exterminated by the Angels, the possessors of the Fruit of Life and the masters of this world, or to destroy the Angels, robbing them of their place before the Creators and usurping them in turn as we surrender our intellects and enjoy…"

Gendo and Yui blinked as Ikari paused, and they could swear he was wincing for a moment before his measured neutrality returned. "And enjoy the gift of eternal life as one being." Ikari finished. "We must choose. NERV's Human Instrumentality Project was the result of SEELE's feeble resistance against the Creators, employing the powers held within Adam as children of Lilith. Their efforts, while straying from the path, were a worthwhile start."

"Think for a moment, Gendo," Yui said, an almost pleading look in her eyes. "All of this, for me. All this suffering, all this pain, what you've done to our son. Why would I want you back if you continue down this path?"

Ikari winced again, his hands shaking for a moment as they began to reach up. Then, he stilled again. "The needs of this creation have superseded this body's base desires," Ikari replied. "Gendo Ikari gave himself as a willing vessel of Adam. Through his exposure to the progenitor of the Fruit of Life, he has made himself capable of doing what needs to be done, starting again where the Creators have failed."

"How did they fail?" Gendo said, glancing up as the Golgotha Object, a purple, smooth cross with spiral patterns pierced through by another perpendicular branch, became visible.

"The division of life was flawed," Ikari replied, looking back up at the Object. "Now, with the empty home of the Creators revealed, the flaw will be mended, and all life made equal."

He looked back and saw Gendo rocketing toward him, his fist covered in a gauntlet of familiar transparent orange as it planted a hook across his face causing him to stumble back.

"You are a fool," Ikari said as his hands began to glow with an AT Field. "Human sentiments and force of arms cannot change what is to come."

"I disagree," Gendo replied, encased in armor now and sporting the strangest thing on his face; a cocky grin. "We just have to keep you busy for long enough, and I think it's been a while since your last barfight."

Ikari stepped forward, then found himself peppered with lances of energy. He looked past and saw Yui, similarly armored and likely controlling the small drones that were attacking a now-raised AT Field. "It seems that the Gods, as always, must teach frail humanity its place," Ikari said, his eye flashing with power.

. . .

Kyu Akagi found that programming was a remarkably difficult task when done under fire. She held the tablet in her hands and stayed behind the Plasm cover that Grandfather had made as best she could, helping the Achiral System here complete its tasks as several people, armored and carrying what were clearly weapons of Worldsea origin, tried their best to stop the final steps of the conversion.

Her grandparents stayed behind a barrier, allowing the two automatic turrets here in the server room to keep them protected as they continued their work. Kozo had a Grip, shaped into a pistol, that he sometimes fired at the intruders.

"Dear," Naoko said as Kozo got fully into cover once again, "any chance you could pick up a computer and make this go a little faster? I'd like to go away from the gunfire, if possible."

"If it wasn't shot out of my hands in the first few seconds," Kozo said patiently, "I'd be helping at this very moment."

"Oh good. At least your heart's in the right place." Naoko retorted as her eyes narrowed slightly.

"Grandparents…" Kyu said absentmindedly as she heard the clunking of heavy footsteps coming towards them from the opposite door, one which they'd sealed. "I believe our reinforcements are here."

It was only a few seconds later that the door blew off its mountings, shooting forward into the group of boarders and slamming into two of them. From the smoke emerged a massive form, its streaked and slightly scorched paint betraying the fact that this White Cell, Data, Kyu believed it was, had seen combat.

It wasted no time striding over to the half-dozen remaining boarders, their harried shots dissolving against an AT Field that stayed up until the moment it stood in their midst. Then, it got to work, grabbing at boarders and tearing them apart with an ease that spoke to its true strength.

For a moment, the gory, macabre sight held Kyu's attention as her lines of code were finished. It was beautiful, in a rather terrifying way.

"Are you all alright?"

She tore her gaze away from the fight that was rapidly wrapping up to see the security chief, one Toph Beifong, barging in with a security team, pistol in hand and a strange armor on, at least compared to the rifle and kevlar that her compatriots wore.

"I believe we are unharmed, for the most part," Kozo replied before looking at the three dead technicians that had been caught out by the teleporting boarders. "I do hope that what comes next is good for them."

Kyu looked away as she heard the White Cells clomping away, seeing Capitan Katsuragi, Doctor Akagi, and Commander Kaji walking in. "What's the status of our preparations?" Doctor Akagi asked.

"All our outer nodes are ready to go," Naoko said as she looked down at her tablet. "We still haven't managed to connect to the spinal column to shift it into place."

"That should have been finished well before you," Akagi said, going over to a console that wasn't smoking and filled with holes. As she tapped on the keyboard, she pulled up a security feed of the engineering bay, the only entrance to the spinal column, and everyone gathered around her to see an engineering bay filled with armored figures, some rather larger than others, and the bodies of the WILLE engineers.

A spike of fear planted itself in Kyu's heart. That was where Maya, Mother, both of them, had been directing things. Had they…

Almost everyone shared a grimace as what was likely the two ringleaders, as it were, became revealed. Kyu recognized the woman HERZ records identified as Aaminata, as well as the woman that Daniel identified as Yzma.

"It looks like we've got one last fight in front of us," Kaji said. "I hope at least some of them made it out alive."

"We'll go make sure of that," Katsuragi said firmly, taking a stowed submachine gun from one of the security personnel. "Get everyone together. We're going to throw these boarders out of here."

. . .

In a shadowed corner of the engineering deck, Ryoji Kaji hid within, both Mayas, Ibuki and Akagi, sequestered in the dark with them.

He should have expected something like this to happen. Should have been quicker to get Ibuki out of the line of fire. He knew Maya could handle herself well enough, but now he had to find his way out of this section.

"Ibuki?" he asked Ibuki, soul to soul. "How are you holding up?"

Ryoji grimaced at how shredded her body and soul had been by that first volley. If he'd been even a second slower…

"I'm… this is so… weird…" Ibuki said, her soul's Framework pulsing weakly as Maya worked on it.

"Maya," Ryoji said as he shifted his attention, "how's work on her coming?"

"Not having a body to stabilize is really throwing me off," Maya replied, her voice laced with concentration and a mounting anxiety. "I wish Hikari or Eleanor were here to help guide me. But I'll do my best."

"Awesome,"
Ryoji said as he kept watch. Whatever he might have said next withered as he saw a squad of souls approaching. "Maya! Pause for a second!"

She stopped, and Ryoji did his best to draw a veil around them to prevent them from being seen. Whoever these people were, he could guess they were well-armed. They chattered to each other, whether by talking or by some other means he didn't know, but they hadn't spotted them yet.

'Come on…' Ryoji thought as he shrank back further still into the nook, watching them intently as they came to a stop in front of him. 'I'd hate to see what fighting with a shadow looks like.'

Then, there was a noise, a dull thud, that penetrated even the shadows, drawing the attention of the four in front of them as they darted away, towards what he remembered to be the access ports to the bay. As he watched them go, he thought for a moment, toying with the Expression that hid them from the rest of the bay as the noise happened again. "Alright. Maya, keep working on Ibuki. I'll go see what's going on." he said as he finished his modifications.

He only saw the assent she gave him through her Frames as he slowly parted from the shadow they were in, creeping to another spot and peering out from his umbral veil. He saw the corpse-strewn bay laid out before him, the boarders stacking up near the three doors into the bay that now had several dents in each of them.

Whoever was coming through, they were about to get lit up. Now, all they needed was a second to get through and break up the party. A second he could give them…

He saw the several dozen soldiers clumped around several points behind cover and reached out with Frameworks to weave Expressions beneath the squads, hoping against hope that he wouldn't be noticed by the Interfacers that led out these raiders.

There… the shadows underneath them would be a decent enough anchor for what was rapidly becoming quite a complicated Expression. 'Come on…' Ryoji thought as the doors began to buckle in again. 'Please don't look behind you…'

Finally, the doors burst in, and Ryoji activated his Expression, shadows snaking up the bodies of the boarders in a flash, blinding them as the room became sound and thunder and fury once again.

He aimed for stealth and surprise as the chaos unfolded and his focus narrowed to keep from getting overwhelmed, literally melting in and out of shadows to put a blade in someone's back or a bullet through their skull before moving on. He had to be quick, he had to be careful, and he had to stay out of the way of those White Cells as they ripped through the bay, man after man finding themselves ripped apart as AT Fields protected the White Cells from the devastation. Fire and water and shards of metal flying alongside stranger energies made the bay the epicenter of a maelstrom, one he had to navigate as deftly as possible…

Then, there was a flash of light, a light he could feel, grasping his shadowed form with unyielding fingers as it tore them off him, leaving him in the flesh, in the middle of a battlefield that was very much detrimental to his health.

He ducked into what cover he could steal from the man he killed, then looked around for the source of the light. He found it in the young woman Daniel had identified as Yzma, shaking her hand as dust fell from it. "A light to dispel all shadows." he heard her mutter as she looked around, finding him and grinning slightly. "Ah. There you are. And…"

She looked around again, Ryoji following her gaze and feeling his jaw tighten as she caught a look at both the Mayas. His world's Maya kneeled over the prone Ibuki, the woman thankfully far less riddled with holes than she was before.

But he needed to stop whatever they might do to them. He broke cover, charging as whisps of shadow began to cover his armor again as he fired his pistol again and again to draw the woman's attention.

But his shots ricocheted off the back of what looked like a flat, manta ray-like Spirit summoned out of thin air as it had been when this whole thing started, the Spirit flowing onto Aaminata's otherwise unarmored arm as she interposed herself between him and Yzma with a vacant, golden stare.

It was not a fight he intended to give her as Yzma stalked toward the two, Maya hurrying as her Grip manifested into a pistol. So, Ryoji went around Aaminata, dissolving into shadows that swept around and past her legs before he reformed, again firing at Yzma's back.

The shots, little sharpened shadows, simply bounced off her, leaving little dents in her skin under where they tore cloth as Yzma turned to face him with a chuckle. "Oh, you're a feisty one. I like that."

She became a shadow herself, Ryoji diving after her soul as he followed her lead. The world around them disappeared, becoming little more than an almost distinct haze as he chased her through the bay, and past the walls, going deeper into the ship.

Here and there, they clashed, coming together for the briefest of moments as they stabbed and slashed and shot at each other. Whoever she was, she was clearly at least somewhat more skilled at him on this battlefield.

As they came to another brief stop in a hallway, he resolved to change that, grabbing her soul and yanking them both out of this shadow space, the world snapping back into color and focus as he landed on top of her.

"Oh, dear." Yzma chuckled, an amused look on her face. "A married man in this position, Inspector? What would your wife think if she saw this?"

Ryoji was confused for a moment before he realized she was looking into his soul through the connection he'd used to drag her out of the shadows. He jumped to his feet, severing the connection as Yzma laughed, the woman flowing to her feet.

"Alright," Ryoji said. "Just the two of us."

"Oh. Just the two of us." Yzma replied sardonically. "All for those pretty little things? You're the most pitiable creature, aren't you? A white knight."

'Wow. Does she get under everyone's skin like this?' Ryoji mused as his Grip became a long combat knife, his senses on edge as he circled her slowly.

Then, he felt someone appear behind him, glancing back to see Aaminata carried by that manta ray that protected her. "Yzma," she said tonelessly. "The ship is lost. Our attempt has failed due to an underestimation of their forces. We must return to the fleet."

He heard a dramatic sigh from behind him as Yzma floated in shadows past him to appear at her side. "Anything else?" she grumbled.

"The rite is beginning," Aaminata said tonelessly. "We must ensure that it is not interrupted."

Yzma nodded and looked back at Ryoji with a critical eye, silent and still for long moments. His eyes went wide as he realized what information he might have given her. 'Damn it! I need to stop them now before she tells anyone.'

As he reformed his pistol, however, Yzma shrugged as she unstoppered a vial, coating her dagger in whatever liquid was contained within. "Well, it looks like it's time to jump ship."

Then, with seemingly all the casualness in the world, Yzma planted the dagger low in Aaminata's back.

As Ryoji's eyes went wide, Aaminata's face went slack, the golden glow fading as she collapsed to the floor.

"Ah, well." Yzma sighed. "It's just a shame dear old Shang and I only get to watch things play out on the periphery. Damn sigil won't come off our brows, either."

She shrugged, and Ryoji raised his pistol. "What the hell? Why?" he said, his mind still reeling.

"Because either my free will gets taken away," Yzma began as if speaking to a toddler, "or Shang and I get chased by you lot once things are finished up here. Whatever happens here, it's going to be very unhealthy for a girl my age."

"Make no mistake though," Yzma continued as her voice took on a hard edge, "I'll tame these wannabe gods, just like I brought Supai to heel and took his power for myself. Unity's a good deal, after all."

She paused, then grinned. "Well, see you around. Maybe."

With that, she melted into shadows, her form seeming to fall through the floor as she disappeared.

Ryoji took a deep breath, dismissing his Grip as he came over to Aaminata's body. "Damn…" he said, gently scooping her up after a moment. "Well, hope you aren't going to turn on us for healing you. Now, how to get back to the engineering bay…"

He made his way as quickly as he could to the engineering bay, entering to see utter carnage. Bodies were strewn everywhere, and there were more than a few people, all of the WILLE, leaning on walls or sitting on chairs, that were tending to wounds or being tended to.

As he approached, more than a few heads turned to ogle at who he carried. One in particular dropped what she was doing, rushing over to Ryoji.

"What happened?" Ymris asked, clearly shaken as Ryoji set her down on her side.

"That shadow witch, Yzma, stuck this knife in her back before she teleported out," Ryoji replied, noting a rather pale Maya coming over to inspect the scene. "I guess she wasn't as loyal as we thought."

"And why the hell did you bring her back here?" one of the security team members said, pointing a gun at the prone Aaminata. "She took out most of the bay, and butchered several of our men during the fight."

"She isn't fully in control." Ymris shot back as she slapped the barrel of the rifle away. She looked over at Maya. "Is there anything you can see in her that should worry us if she wakes up?"

Maya studied the woman lying before her with a critical eye. "Let's see…"

Ryoji watched silently for a moment as Maya worked, glancing up at the rest of the bay and scanning it. His eyes went wide as he saw Captain Katsuragi, nursing what looked like a shot wound on her shoulder, Commander Kaji by her side as Kyu Akagi worked on her with Interfacing.

He rose almost on instinct, making his way over to her quickly. "How is she?" he asked Kaji.

Kaji took a deep breath. "Some pretty bad bullet wounds, and an arrow of all things, but Kyu here's managed to patch her up a decent amount."

"I'll be fine, Ryoji," Katsuragi said, wincing in pain as Kyu sealed another wound. "Both of you. I almost forgot how much you worry." she chuckled.

Then, not for the first time, the cabin shook, a muffled boom seeping through from the surface.

"Man," Kaji said as he looked at the ceiling. "They're still going at it?"

"Ikari was a bar brawler," Ryoji replied. "Our version at least. I think he can take a few hits."

"What's this?" Kyu said, drawing their attention to her as she studied Katsuragi's shoulder. "Grandmother, can you come here for a moment?"

Naoko, perched over a console, looked back over at them as she walked over. "What's the matter?"

"I'm seeing a strange Framework here in Captain Katsuragi's shoulder," Kyu said as Naoko stopped by her side. "Here. I can't seem to get it out…"

"Don't worry about me," Katsuragi said firmly as she gently pushed Kyu away. "We need to get this Spear ready for when it's needed."

Kyu regarded her for a moment, then nodded slightly. "We're almost done with preparations. I would recommend clearing the bay of any survivors once we're finished."

"Good point if Ikari's going to break Unit-01 out of here." Commander Kaji said as he stood, looking over at the security team. "Get everyone out as quickly as you can! We'll call the medical teams to do triage."

Toph nodded, beginning to get those who could walk on their own to leave the bay as more able-bodied security members began carrying those who couldn't. Ibuki, now conscious, was the last that was out carried out of the door, after a quiet moment with Akagi. Soon enough, only the technically involved, the command staff, and the dead remained.

Those working did so with all due haste, fingers flying over the main consoles of the system here. "Alright," Vice-Captain Akagi said after what felt like too long. "Our preparations here are done. I don't see any need to be here much longer."

She paused for a moment, obviously thinking before turning to Naoko. "Mother, can we guide this ship in remotely?"

"It would be possible, I think," Naoko replied. "But we'd need control of the ship's engines and control surfaces."

"Easy enough for the ship to hack into, I would think, Grandmother," Kyu replied. "And it takes the risk of having anyone on this ship for longer than necessary out of the question."

"Well, I don't see why not." Commander Kaji said. "Talk to your people, Mrs. Fuyutsuki. We'll get ours ready."

Ryoji was now, for the moment, simply an observer here in the bay as preparations to evacuate got underway. "Alright," Kozo said after a moment, "we've begun the evacuation of all remaining crew. We'll be teleported out shortly."

"I'll stay behind for a moment," Ryoji said, drawing confused looks from everyone for a moment. "I'll just be checking the ship one last time, make sure our Scion friends didn't leave any surprises behind. I'll be quick."

"Then I'd get to it quickly." Captain Katsuragi said. "We need to be out of here soon."

Ryoji nodded, vanishing into shadows like a puff of smoke as he flew away toward the first section that he needed to check.

. . .

Captain Katsuragi waited patiently for this all to be over, the sealed wound in her shoulder still aching as she watched. Anxiety, seemingly omnipresent now, quietly ticked away within her as she heard the reports from the Val of crewmen being teleported aboard.

"Alright," Naoko said quietly as the last of those souls not in the engineering bay vanished from the ship. "Here we go."

Kozo nodded, silently relaying a message to the other Gendo Ikari via their soul link. "Gendo's been notified. He'll be joining us shortly," he said.

Katsuragi closed her eyes, taking a deep breath and waiting for the strange, fuzzy feeling of teleporting away from the ship she'd dedicated so much of her life to.

She felt the ripple of the process beginning. But then, the… thing in her shoulder flared, and the rippling sensation disappeared as she opened her eyes in shock to an empty bay. 'What the…'

Her eyes went wide, and she stood and dashed towards one of the exits. She had to get clear now. If Ikari was going to…

She just barely reached the door and opened it before…

She woke up slowly. Achingly slowly. When the hell…

Her ears rang, and the first thing she felt was the pain waking her up the rest of the way as she tried to look behind her. The engineering bay had disappeared in flames, Ikari's explosive method of freeing Unit-01 having pushed her free from the fire.

It had also, she found as she tried to get simply to her hands and knees, pushed no small amount of shrapnel into her body. It was a miracle that she was still alive. Why hadn't she teleported out? What had that witch shot into her with that arrow?

She crawled over to a wall, pulling herself to her feet as best she could. Finally, she began the slow walk up to the bridge.

After what felt like ages, her mind caught up, and a hand slowly went down to a pocket. What she pulled from it was a mess of plastic and glass that had once been a phone, along with being smeared with blood. She was probably losing a lot of that. It felt strangely… warm as the ship shook slightly, the world beginning to spin as Katsuragi paused.

Then, from the shadows, Ryoji emerged. 'You came back for me.' her addled mind thought. 'I'm a lucky girl… should I be?'

Her thoughts made her miss what Ryoji said to her at first, but she could not miss the panicked expression, the strange sensation of healing beginning to go to work.

She blinked, and he was on a call with someone. She focused, straining her still distant hearing to listen.

"I don't care what was supposed to happen, damn it! She's still here, and she's wounded. We need to find a way to get her off the ship now!"

A pause, his expression slackening. "What? What the hell's an Anchor… no. No, that's a stupid question. I get it. I'll get her to a hatch, fly her over when you get close."

"Ryoji."

The name felt slurred, spoken by lips that still hadn't fully regained their sensation, but it made him pause, just as she wanted.

"Somehow… I think this is where I need to be. No need to worry about anyone hijacking the ship from you if I'm at the controls." she said.

"We won't let someone do that," Ryoji said.

He was panicked. She couldn't remember the last time she'd seen him like that. "I'm near death anyway, Ryoji," she said as firmly as she could. "You could patch me up, but we both know I've lost too much blood at this point. Just get me to the bridge, and Mrs. Theisman will make sure I'm taken care of."

Ryoji's brow furrowed. He was on the cusp of continuing to argue with her. Then, quietly, he sighed. "Alright. Sit still."

Ryoji disappeared from sight as she felt more pieces of shrapnel being removed, the wounds pinching together and sealing almost painlessly. She watched, and waited, until finally, Ryoji came around to her again. "Alright." he said, "get ready. I'll get you to the bridge."

He picked her up gently, and she felt the equally strange sensation of dissolving as she became a shadow with him. The world, vague and shifting now, blurred by as Ryoji flew, snapping into focus once again on the command platform of the bridge as she was helped to her feet again.

"Anything I should take back to your husband?" Ryoji asked.

"Tell him…" Katsuragi was silent for a moment. "I'll see him again soon."

Ryoji nodded. "Good luck, Misato."

"Thanks."

With that, he disappeared. And the bridge, once again, was hers.

Katsuragi took a deep breath as she walked over to a rail. "Magi, begin vocal command automation, and transfer all controls to command, authorization K-0916 Alpha."

A quiet tri-tone told her it was done, and she looked at a screen beside her that showed the battle going still as Unit-13 plunged into the Minus Space.

"It's up to you and yours now, Daniel," she said mostly to herself as she reached for her messy, tangled hair, pulling the bun apart.

The door opened, and she whipped her head around to see… two of the White Cells, their pain scratched and seared off enough that she couldn't make out which ones they were. "Oh. Good," she said quietly. "You two keep me safe, alright?"

She couldn't tell if it was the blood loss or the resulting delirium that made her see one of them nodding as she turned back to her window to the end of the world. "Shinji…" she said as she removed the tie that kept her hair up, finally letting it fall free as she let go of everything else.

"Good luck," Misato said. "I'm ready to see the world you make."

. . .

Daniel watched, strangely relieved, as the brilliant Unit-13 dove towards the opening in the world, disengaging with the Hollow Saint as all watched.

"Alright guys," he began to say to the Children. "Get ready."

He watched the Hollow Saint for a moment, hoping against hope. Finally, he dived after Ikari, Daniel content to let him get a little distance before going after him. It would give him a little time to take care of the wounds, and the Flux, that even just a few minutes of combat had given him as the others gathered to his side.

"We're ready, Bruder," Asuka said quietly, Daniel glancing over to see Unit=01, Unit=02, Unit=05, and Unit=06 by his sides.

He took a deep breath, then made Unit=00 dive towards the open Doors of Guf. "Let's end this."

I hope that the casualties on the protagonists side are minimal, if not zero. The Gendo vs Gendo fight I find most interesting. Both are empowered in different ways.

Chapter 43: Tumbling Down, Tumbling Down

Chapter 43: Tumbling Down, Tumbling Down

Writing about it now, it still hurts.

Not just the physical pain that I endured, though that still lingers to some extent with the marks I received. But what others had to endure. What I brought my Children to accomplish and suffer through with me.

I wish I could do this alone. Spare those I love the pain of doing what I do. But I know I could not do it without them. That they went willingly with me into Armageddon. Whatever power I stood before then, that was what carried us that day. A unity that Hamar'ramah could never understand.

- From the personal journal of Daniel Theisman

NHS Gebet, Over Antarctica

Toph Beifong was never going to get used to teleporting anywhere. That feeling of weightlessness, of being taken off her feet, wouldn't ever sit well with her, no matter how well she could see now.

That they'd gotten on at all was something of a miracle in and of itself, with the ship's AT Field raised as it now was to stand against the dull booms of the Scion fleet's guns. Their only chance at escape, and Mari's friend's only hope of rescue, was in the strange signaling device that all of them carried, a small hexagonal pillar and base, and the spare that Toph kept on her.

But right now, as they appeared in a thankfully empty hallway, she had other things to worry about at the moment.

She stamped a now bare foot, closing her eyes as the sounds rippled through the metal of the ship. She could 'see' every nook and cranny that the sound reverberated in, in a way that no one outside of her family could. Such as the precise locations of the sentry turrets that were waiting for them.

She took a solid stance, reaching out and taking hold of them mentally, seemingly grasping them with her hands as she pushed them together. The accompanying crunch of a long line in the ceiling folding in on itself was nothing if not satisfying.

"Come on!" Korra called as she and her companions began to run up the hallway. "It's like navigating the Wunder! We should be there in no time!"

The former Avatar and his companions stood there for a moment before Toph shook her head. "Damn kids." she sighed quietly before they followed after. "Always rushing into things."

"Says you," Aang said with a slight grin, the grin disappearing for a moment as they ducked into cover and dealt with a pair of turrets as quickly as they could, he and Toph tearing them free from the ceiling and their ammunition feeds.

"Hey, at least I managed to get old and have the chance to learn my lesson, twinkle toes," Toph said with a roll of her eyes. The motion still felt utterly novel to her.

As they charged through the hallways, those metalbenders among them turning the automated turrets into so much mangled scrap metal, they began to hear the heavy thumping of steps coming towards them. Finally, as they caught up with the younger Avatar and friends, they came to a stop beside them as two White Cells stood sentinel in the hallway before them.

All looked behind them, the way back barred by another two White Cells. They would never cease to be creepy, with their almost pure white skin, puffy lips, and slight grins that always creased their faces. Now, Toph and the others had to deal with them face to face.

"Great," Sokka muttered as they circled up, what weapons they had at the ready as the White Cells began to encroach on them. "Any chance we can make a new path out of here?"

"Don't think so," Toph replied. "Thick walls around us. It'd probably take too much time to cut through."

"Well, it's not like we're getting through an AT Field, either," Korra replied. "So, how do we fight these things?"

"We go around their barriers," Aang said as he settled into a relaxed, open position. "These things can only focus on so many things at once, surely."

It certainly wasn't the worst plan that Aang had come up with. But here, against a field that they couldn't pierce with anything they normally had, that felt like far too cold a comfort to Toph.

. . .

Shinji Ikari waited patiently, feeling the massive number of souls within Unit-01 as he dived toward Minus Space. They swirled within the core of the being, whispering wordless power to Shinji's soul that he hoped would put him on par with his father.

He remembered that day so long ago, that feeling of power that he'd had when he tried to save Rei. He didn't realize it back then, but that power was… intoxicating. But he needed to keep it under control as he focused.

There. He felt a change in… the air? The space? Whatever he was surrounded by now, it was not an entirely pleasant sensation as it prickled through him from the feet up. 'This must be Minus Space.'

He took a deep breath, then connected himself to his mother, to Rei, to all those beings that had once lived on this earth. And as he saw the white space around him, pinpricked with dots and swirling with nebulae of deepest black, he acted.

He felt an arm swirl into existence, the hand shooting up to wrap itself around Unit-13's neck, squeezing tightly even though Shinji knew it wouldn't amount to much.

"So," he heard his father's voice echo in the Entry Plug, "the Colonel and her allies hid you away in your rightful place. How surprising of them."

Shinji said nothing as he felt the rest of what now felt like a second skin return to its proper form, a new free hand grabbing at the Spear in Unit-13's right hands.

As he summoned legs to kick off of Unit-13 and its grasp, he felt the strange feeling of someone… leaving. "I'll keep them safe for you, Shinji," Kaworu whispered to his soul. "Do what you must."

Shinji set his jaw as he shoved off Unit-13, the Spear of Longinus slipping out of its grasp as it remained in his. He focused, and with only a moment's resistance, the Spear twisted and softened as it formed into something new, something Shinji knew could match the destruction of the Spear of Longinus.

"So," Father said, "you choose Cassius, the spear of hope."

"Father," Shinji said, "please. If there's any way to stop this, you need to. There's a way to get Mother back without ending the world."

"There…" Father paused, and Shinji wondered what was going on in the still Unit-13.

Before Father could continue, they heard a hollow, almost musical explosion above them, and Shinji looked up to see a gleaming golden comet streaking toward them. In the all-too-literal blink of an eye though, he saw five other Evas, surely Daniel and his cohort, slam into the comet, knocking it away from them as they pushed it down and down out of sight.

Shinji blinked again, then looked up to see one of Unit-13's massive hands around the haft of his Spear of Cassius. "There are greater deeds that must be done for the sake of all," Father said as Unit-13 drew close, taking him into a grapple.

Then, they fell, down and down and down past darkened galaxies and into a grove of umbral dots, towards… something.

Even with the power at his fingertips, Shinji struggled to break free from Unit-13's grasp. 'Come on.' Shinji thought as he grimaced. 'Are you so powerless in there, Asuka? Is that just how strong the Angels are?'

He managed to catch two dots in the distance as he spun, more defined against the pale space as they passed in front of a 'star'. More ships like the ones out there? He hoped these were the friends that Daniel had mentioned.

"Father," he said as calmly as he could, "you need to let me go. We've got bigger problems to deal with before this."

It was silent for a moment, then Unit-13 let go. "You are correct," Father said, turning and flying away towards a strange, blocky object. "The intruders must be dealt with."

"What is that?" Shinji asked as he trailed behind, only half expecting an answer.

"That is the true form of the Golgotha Object." Father replied, surprising Shinji slightly as they flew 'up' the length of the Object, in the shape of the purple, Spear-like thing that he'd seen. "From this outpost, the Creators scattered from this place six Spears, the progenitor Lilith, and the fractured form of Adam. Mankind fumbled through this place many years ago, back to the promised land where all things began and where the Creators' implements must inevitably return. Only here can be changed those things thought immutable. This is the one and only place where even fate may bend to one's will."

He watched as Unit-13 dove into the arm at the very top of the Object, disappearing almost as if Shinji had blinked it out of existence. He took a deep breath, then followed after, wondering what battlefield he might find himself on next.

. . .

Daniel Theisman stood in the ruins of a city that he'd called home, the world swirling around him alongside the stars and drifting flecks of gemstone.

"Whoa…" Asuka said from beside him, Daniel looking over to see her in her Plugsuit, arcs of lightning and slivers of metal orbiting her as if she were a star. "What…"

Daniel blinked, and the world changed again, an apartment from Germany, familiar to the both of them, taking its place. "Like I said," Daniel began, "this place will change on us from moment to moment."

"It is the truth of godhood. Mind over matter. Order to the chaos." a slightly echoing voice said, the echoes carrying the words with a deeper and deeper pitch.

From a darkened hallway emerged Tavis Farhaven. Or, at least, what now wore his face. His eyes were a solid gold now, a shifting blade upon his brow as luminous mist pooled at his feet and swirled up in tentacles that seemed almost alive. "You face me in my domain." he continued. "A foolish endeavor, so close to the levers of change."

Daniel took a deep breath, and in the space between moments, Unit=00 took his place as a swordspear of glittering white appeared in its hand. "We'll see."

With that, he burst forward, the remade Herald Unit appearing in an eyeblink as it casually parried his blow, lashes of gold and mist caught by the others as the fight commenced.

For Daniel, the scenery changing, from Germany to a massive chapel, the place of his greatest mistake, to places scattered throughout Tokyo-3, to places only he'd seen on his journeys, faded into the periphery. All that mattered now was strike and counterstrike, missile and melee weapon, movement in the air and on the ground as he did his best to occupy the god that he now stood before. The others swirled around him, intercepting strikes meant for him as they tried to weasel their way through his defenses.

Hamar'ramah approached this impressive display of violence with a casual ease that belied how devastatingly skilled he was, uncountable time fighting and waging war evident in the way that any strike he or the kids or even Nynrya, now joined into the fray as they came across what must have been her home once, made was so close to striking true. But only so close.

Finally, as Hamar'ramah turned his attention towards Shinji for a moment, Daniel found his opening, a long sword that Daniel had exchanged his swordspear for lancing out to finally cut a shallow gash in Hamar'ramah's arm.

Daniel stifled the triumph that instinctively rose within his chest as the sword came away from a place where it looked like nothing had touched it. The only indication that the Hollow Saint had even been hit was the flinch before he flew away from them all, landing some distance away in the Geofront as the group gathered itself.

"You should know better than to try and harm my body in a place like this, Daniel," Hamar'ramah said, his tone a chiding thing that grated at Daniel's nerves. "You can only delay the inevitable."

Daniel steeled himself to attack again, then found himself caught off guard as Unit-13, of all things, appeared, charging at Hamar'ramah with a Spear of Longinus leveled at his chest.

The Hollow Saint frowned slightly as every lash that he directed at Gendo Ikari, or at least what had once been the man, disappeared under the power of the Spear, finally revealing a lithe blade of golden filaments as he batted the strike aimed at his heart aside, swiping at the Unit and finding his strike blocked by an AT Field that even his power struggled to circumvent.

Then, Daniel's eyes went wide as he saw Unit-01, wielding the Spear of Longinus as he tried to join in, Daniel charging forward. "Get out of here, Shinji!" he shouted as a far larger and longer sword, one another son of his would have wielded, appeared in his hand. "Let us deal with him!"

He set his mind to prying apart Hamar'ramah's defenses, his cohort joining in as both the Ikaris of this world slipped away from the corners of his vision. This battle was hectic, Hamar'ramah seeming to try at chasing after the pair as Daniel kept him at bay.

The kids and Nynrya were really giving their all now, cuts beginning to appear and disappear on the Hollow Saint's form more and more. Finally, Daniel aimed a devastating chop at a busy Saint's shoulder, intending to cleave him in two.

Against all odds, the strike connected, the blade sweeping through from sternum to hip as, finally, Hamar'ramah cried out in pain. But mist bound his form together as he became it, slipping past the attacks that the others tried to lay on him.

Now, as they paused again, Daniel looked up to see the sun, the Geofront they had been in blasted open like that time so long ago.

"I would have thought that you'd taught your compatriots how to harm in this world," Hamar'ramah said. "It would be foolish of you to distract me otherwise."

He paused. "Unless the distraction is the point. You seek to enable these people to carry out their short-sighted goals." he sighed as he shook his head. "Such heroic nonsense."

He wasn't wrong. And Daniel hoped against all doubts that he wouldn't realize he wasn't right.

. . .

Toph really should have studied how many White Cells were normally in a ship like this. Even with how many she recalled being painted up on the Wunder, an informal registry of the near dozen that people had slapped a different appearance on, she knew that there were still dozens more that went blank.

It was a weird thought to cross her mind as the White Cell in front of her threw another punch at her head. She blocked it with the help of the impromptu metal armor that she'd torn from the walls as they went, still feeling the strain on her forearms as they likely began to hairline fracture under the stress.

She took a step back as she tried to gauge her next move, her eyes going wide as she caught the low hook rising towards her with a blistering speed. She reacted, an arm going down to try and catch the blow as it connected, shoving her arm into her stomach and the rest of her into the wall of the hallway that they battled in, feeling it crumple slightly as she wheezed.

It was a moment of instinct that made her bend, the metal that wrapped around her arms in a vambrace unfurling and enveloping the fist of the White Cell, a moment's further bending shifting the followup to slam into the wall.

She tried to launch the other piece of 'armor' that she wore at its other arm, but the sheet of bulkhead simply slammed against an AT Field, Toph silently cursing as she continued to keep its attention. 'Come on… someone…'

Eventually, thankfully, someone was there, and she watched a lance of fire, white-hot, bubble through its core of crimson gemstone, the thing slumping to the ground in an instant as the AT Field flickered out, revealing Zuko.

Toph took a deep breath she knew she desperately needed. "Thanks."

"Of course," Zuko replied, looking over at the remaining White Cell as Aang and Korra kept it busy.

Korra was in front of it, Aang to its left, and Korra stood firm as the White Cell lumbered forward. She tore free a piece of the bulkhead with her metalbending, flinging it forward in a maneuver all of them that remained knew would be useless.

As expected, the AT Field the White Cell raised stopped the chunk of metal dead in the air, but before it could flicker out of existence, Korra began a series of swirling smooth movements. 'Is she trying to waterbend the thing to death?' Toph wondered. 'It has blood. Or at least something that looks like it. Maybe…'

The AT Field, after a moment, began to ripple, the waves on its surface growing stronger and stronger as Korra likely poured all her power into what she was doing. Aang, realizing whatever Korra was doing, joined in, and in a moment, the AT Field ripped apart, and Katara, hanging back, sent twin whips of water flashing forward, wrapping around the exposed core of the White Cell and tugging it free after a moment's effort.

As the White Cell slumped to the ground, they found themselves in a moment of respite.

"How's everyone doing?" Katara asked, looking around at the now rather smaller group. "Does anyone need to get out of here?"

Toph shook her head. "I think we're still only down to 7 at the moment. Just enough for you to patch up quickly."

Asami, Mako, Suki, and Mai had all needed to be evacuated after some rather grievous injuries. But they were close now.

Katara nodded, returning the whips of water mostly back to her canteen as she approached Toph. "You took a pretty bad hit there," she said. "Let me get you first."

Toph shook her head. "Don't worry about me just yet. I'm pretty tough…"

She trailed off as her hand, tenderly on where the hit connected, shifted, and she felt pieces of something very important shifting in the pouch under her combat vest.

She got into the pouch, pulling out several fragments of the signaling device meant for Fuyutsuki. "Damn," Toph muttered as she threw them aside. "We're going to need a new plan."

Sokka nodded, pulling out the signaling device that he wore around his neck. A slight turn of the pillar and a click activated the communications device within it. "This is Rescue. Our way out for Fuyutsuki's been destroyed. Is there any way you can lower this ship's AT Field so you can teleport us out of here?"

"It's going to be… difficult, without destroying the ship." the woman that Daniel called Amaya said. "However, we can give it a try. Kensuke and I will reroute several Evas to the Gebet."

The ship shook, and everyone in the hallway heard the buzz of the eldritch guns firing in return. The sound had faded into the background as they had pressed on.

"Whatever you do, just make sure you beat the fleet outside to the punch," Sokka said.

"Get to the command gondola," Amaya said. "You'll likely find Fuyutsuki there and it'll be the most heavily protected spot on the whole ship."

"Were it so easy?" Sokka muttered. "Alright," he said to Amaya, "we'll get there as quick as we can."

. . .

Shinji Ikari followed his father through strange vistas, and familiar places, until finally, they ended up in a space he'd seen before; the massive chamber of Terminal Dogma. Looming large, as he expected, was the form of Lilith. But strangely, instead of being a pallid white, it was pitch black, that mask that looked like Sachiel's was replaced by a strange purple mask that had an inverted triangle, seven eyes going down its length.

"What is this?" he asked Father. "Lilith?"

"Yes," Father answered. "It is the Imaginary Lilith, both the mind and soul of the progenitor of the Seed of Knowledge returned to her home, alongside the power suffused in her by the imaginations of her children. Only humanity, with its ability to believe equally in fantasy and reality, can access her power."

Father turned to look at him, that glowing crack in his face still creeping Shinji out to no end. "In order for mankind to achieve the power to change fate, you must relinquish your Spear."

Shinji looked down, seeing the Spear of Cassius still in his hand. He hesitated for a moment, even knowing somewhat what came next. Finally though, after what felt like too long under Father's scrutiny, he let go, the Spear flying away from his hand seemingly of its own accord. Flying into the air beside it was the Spear of Longinus, the two orbiting each other as they became more in shape like their titles, long thin rods.

"The Spears of despair and hope, mingled together, will move the thoughts and soul of Lilith to action, blending Imaginary and Reality together, and allowing Lilith to complete the task at hand," Father said as the two orbiting Spears became a single, black one, unfurled completely as it leveled itself at the Imaginary Lilith's chest.

As it sunk in, the flesh of the Imaginary Lilith slowly returned to that pale white hue Shinji was familiar with, the giant's arms moving as its hands, pierced by massive nails, became seemingly like dough as they lifted off the nails. The mass of twitching legs that he'd seen on Lilith so long ago swirling into twin pillars seemingly more suited to the titan before him.

It splashed into the LCL before them, the eyes on its mask glowing as they became sprinkled with a rain of the stuff. "This is the only means for the Creators to taste the vengeance of their creations," Father said as they watched Lilith, slowly becoming more defined and far more womanly, rise up out of Terminal Dogma.

"The ritual of Final Impact has begun," Father said as Lilith disappeared. "Now, the Imaginary Lilith must be protected until her work is complete."

He seemed to stare at the space in front of him for a moment, then reached out a white-gloved hand. The air fuzzed for a moment, and then Shinji's eyes went wide as a new Spear snapped into existence, Father taking it so casually.

"Mankind could not access the other Spears sent here after the Second Impact," he said matter-of-factly as he walked back towards the exit to Terminal Dogma. "Now, the intruders will know of its power."

'Intruders…' Shinji's eyes went wide as he ran after him. 'No! I have to warn Daniel!'

. . .

Eleanor glided through the air, her target a ship that looked much like its compatriots as they clustered together to protect each other from the fire of the remaining Scion ships, now about 19 or so in number. "Misato, Ritsuko, Mariah, Mari, on me. If we can draw out the Masters of the NERV vessels, we can disrupt their AT Fields at the source. Everyone else, continue running interference and focus on the Herald Units. Until they're definitively out of action, they're still a threat."

Her compatriots formed up on her quickly, wings or 'jetpack' boosters allowing them to soar through the still chaotic air above Calvary Base. There were still plenty of mass-produced NERV Evas flying around, and 3 of the Herald Units that remained, their numbers now only 7, were engaging not only a squad of HERZ Evas but one of the NERV vessel's Masters as well, the area around the battle awash with light and energy as they danced across the surface of the vessel.

The Gebet's Master was already out of its berth, its black and white body accented by a gray chestpiece and an opened visor as it stared at the battle. Already, there were Scion vessels that bore more than a few scars.

"Heads up!" Amaya said Eleanor's comms as her squad dodged and weaved through the firepower, both NERV and Scion, that was directed their way. "The Wunder's Master is breaking off and going after you!"

"Duly noted," Eleanor said calmly as they made it through the storm of energy, landing on the top hull of the Gebet as its master turned to face them, twelve baleful red eyes regarding them just for a moment before its uppermost eyes flashed, the Evas scattering as the top of the vessel went up in an explosion that barely scratched its hull.

Eleanor waited for a moment as Mariah and Mari, almost mirrors of each other, charged after what was likely the Mark.12, dancing past its follow-up shot as they swiped at it, a halo forming around its back as it danced away, continuing to fire at them.

"Need any help?" Eleanor asked as Mari and Mariah closed the gap, AT Fields flaring to life on the Mark.12's arms as it blocked their strikes.

"We've got this one locked down for now," Mariah replied, Unit=08 glancing back at them for a moment before she blocked a punch from the Mark in front of her. "Right now, just watch our backs!"

Eleanor nodded, looking back as the reconstructed Mark.09 landed on the deck, wasting no time as it fired its flashing blasts at them. An AT Field, somewhat hastily erected and buttressed by Misato and Ritsuko, barely contained the force of the explosion.

"Ready to really get to work?" Eleanor asked Misato and Ritsuko.

"Am I ever," Misato replied, Eleanor hearing the grin on her face as a massive two-handed mace of deep blue ice formed in Unit=12's hands, mist falling from it to the hull they stood on.

"I'll provide harassment while you both go in for the kill," Ritsuko replied calmly as a pistol of smooth white porcelain, accompanied by a large, almost riot-sized, shield formed on Unit=13's offhand. "Stay alert. We might have company at any moment."

Eleanor hefted the sea-glass battleax Unit=10 wielded, then charged alongside the crimson and bronze Unit=12 towards the Mark.09. It waited patiently for them, two long, whip-like AT Fields forming on its arms as they got close.

The whips flashed to life, both Eleanor and Misato battering the strikes aside as they began a series of attacks in almost perfect concert, all three of the HERZ pilot's souls linked to inform each other of their coming strikes.

The withering barrage was punctuated every once in a while by the crack of Ritsuko's pistol, a sound like shattering porcelain, the shots often deftly deflected by an AT Field or a 'tentacle'. But more and more, as Eleanor and Misato pressed the attack, more and more attacks began to get through, a grazing slice on the leg here, a solid blow on the upper arm there.

'Come on…' Eleanor thought as they began to overwhelm the Mark.09's defenses. 'One more slip up…'

Then, she caught a flash of golden light from the corner of her eye, both her and Misato dodging back from the Mark as a blade of deep gold slammed into the hull between them. Eleanor glanced around her as, one after another, the remaining four Herald Units dropped in around them.

"Damn!" Misato said. "Just what we needed."

Eleanor wanted no time. "Marie," she said into a quickly opened commlink, "get who you can and make your way to our position, quickly!"

"On our way," Marie replied, Eleanor returning her attention to the slowly circling Herald Units as Ritsuko made her way over to them, twin blades of porcelain floating in the air by her pylons.

"How long do you think we need to hold out?" Ritsuko asked, her pistol only shaking slightly as she swept it across their newly arrived foes.

"Not long, I don't think," Eleanor replied as the Herald Units continued to try and surround all four of them, even the Mark.09 forced to turn its back on the HERZ Units. "I saw Marie and a few others on our approach here dealing with one of the Scion Vessels."

She glanced up at Mariah and Mari as they continued their duel, Mari sweeping around the Mark.12 with her whip and binding its arms as Mariah darted in for the kill, a gleaming lance of what was likely Lancium goring the core of the Mark.12.

It slumped over, and Mariah and Mari turned to realize their situation. "We'll have a fair fight on our hands soon enough," Eleanor said with a smile.

"Much as I'll appreciate their help," Misato said as her mace became a rifle, "I'd like something a little better than 'a fair fight'."

Before any would say anything else, before anyone could even begin to move, an unseen presence, massive in power, made everything pause. Eleanor looked out towards where the hole in Calvary base, now massive in size, was as she slowly, slowly crept forward.

The Herald Units, their ready stances slackening, allowed her to pass as she came to the edge of the ship, looking down at the ground of Antarctica far, far below as her eyes went wide.

Emerging from the portal to Minus Space, an utterly massive head of bright blue hair, falling around a mask that should not have been so familiar to this world, began to rise slowly, slowly into the air, everything around it becoming silent as all began to notice.

The mask began to slip off, falling back into Minus Space as the face of Rei looked around her surroundings with eyes easily twice again as wide as any ship here was long.

"My god…" Eleanor said quietly, then quickly pulled up a feed to the rescue team beneath their feet. "Rescue, the AT Field should be down now! Secure Fuyutsuki and teleport back to the Val as soon as you can! You don't have much time!"

. . .

Within Minus Space, inside the bounds of the Golgotha Object, Daniel Theisman, exhaustion and Flux lacing his body seemingly in equal measure, stepped back from Hamar'ramah, spotless, once again, his back to the massive lake that glittered in the imaginary sun of a ruined Geofront.

"You lack the power to slay a god," Hamar'ramah said simply, "but you also lack the conviction. This farce will end shortly."

The Herald Unit that Tavis piloted raised its arms, veins of golden light like rivers flowing to his fingertips and disappearing into the air as the space around him began to stretch.

"Get ready," Daniel said to the others, tapping into that part of him that held Destined Death at last. "It's time to go hot."

His kids and Nynrya, who had been filled in on the particulars now, channeled the strength of their souls as the space around the Hollow Saint tore open the space around him, a brilliant white void almost blinding them before a massive shadow began to step out of the light, revealing itself to be Sachiel, well over twice their height as it looked down at them.

"What the hell…" Shinji said, Daniel sure his eyes were as wide as Shinji's. "How did Sachiel get so big?"

"He's pulling Angels from previous loops," Daniel said as he saw yet more Angels beginning to emerge, different sizes and shapes, and even Angels he'd never seen before, all beginning to stream from the portals. "Take them down!"

The group scattered as the massive Sachiel's eyes flashed, the ground erupting where Daniel had just stood, the HERZ Evas replying with withering fire that pierced through the AT Field that the massive Eva set up like so much butter, cracking through its core and sending it falling back towards a few more of its massive compatriots.

Daniel channeled Destined Death into the massive blade that he held as best he could, the edges beginning to glow a deep red as he came face to face with a rather smaller Zeruel than he was used to, flanked by several other Angels.

He cut through them all with ease, their AT Fields, their armor, nothing, mattering as his sword seemed to sweep through open air. Their flesh went grey, and they didn't even explode as they fell to the ground, their life stolen from them as Daniel charged in, swinging with wide sweeps all around him at the Angels that stood against them.

Hamar'ramah simply stood in place maintaining the portals as Daniel began to see Mass-Production Evas and even copies of the original Evangelions charging through. A spike of fear planted itself in his chest as his Sight kicked on, looking as best he could between the lines of Angels where his kids had gone, keeping an eye on them for a moment as best he could, then back at the Evas that had emerged from Hamar'ramah's portal.

The large ones were the easiest to read in between dealing Death to those around him, and they largely were familiar to him, the Framework within their souls much like the Evas he'd worked on in the Echoes before. Looking up at where the pilot should have been, he found…

There were pilots in there, and the glitter of golden light, though tiny, was around them. 'Damn you.' Daniel thought as he tore through yet another line of Angels, uncaring of the superficial wounds he received. 'Damn you!'

"Those Evas have pilots in them!" Daniel said to the others, feeling their shock reverberate through him. "Target the cores, but if you don't have a choice, just get them out of your way! We need to get to Hamar'ramah!"

He was close now, Daniel likely only a few ranks of Angels and Evas away from the Herald Eva. But the tide of bodies being sent against him was unrelenting. Especially, now, that he had to take care to cut through the core of half a dozen Unit-01s, Unit-02s, and Unit-00s.

"Man…" he heard Asuka say, obvious guilt cutting through the strain in her voice. "I'm sorry Shinji…"

"Focus, Liebling," Shinji said firmly. "Once we set things right, we can undo this, surely."

Daniel, even in the heat of battle, still couldn't help but smile slightly at his kids, the ranks of Angel and Eva beginning to thin. Was the Hollow Saint running out of fodder already?

Then, the gates began to flicker, the back of the Herald Unit beginning to glow with that golden light as it began to shudder. After long moments, the shuddering intensified as the Evas began to pause before sliding back towards the portals, what few Angels still living following them quickly after as Hamar'ramah began to shout.

As the last body tumbled through the portals, they snapped shut, the glow on the Herald Unit's back snapping off as it stumbled forward. 'Good.' Daniel thought. 'It looks like Jameson's ritual is working.'

"What…" the Hollow Saint said, and Daniel wondered if Tavis was getting a chance to speak now. "What have you done?"

"What we must, Tavis," Daniel replied. "Give this up, before it consumes you like it almost did me."

The Herald Unit looked up, and Tavis snarled at him, his eyes flickering slightly from their golden hue. "Never."

Before Daniel could reply, he heard a harsh whir as something flashed past him, the Herald Unit reappearing as its hand flashed out to catch the Spear of Longinus that hurtled towards it.

Daniel looked back to see Unit-13 slowly advancing towards them, reaching a hand out to manifest yet another Spear. His eyes went wide as he focused, searching for a Spear himself as he saw Shinji, still himself, trailing behind.

"Such petty weapons cannot simply be tossed at me." the Hollow Saint said, golden light cracking through the Spear like lightning before it shattered with a boom.

"Then I shall simply have to hold the Spear when destroying you," Ikari said, charging forward.

Daniel jumped out of the way as Unit-13 and the Herald Unit clashed once more, still searching… searching… there! Two more Spears were tucked away in a pocket dimension. He reached out, the Frames of his soul lashing onto it and pulling it into his hand. "Shinji!" he shouted, tossing the Spear towards the boy.

Unit-01 caught the Spear, the weapon beginning to shift into a Spear of Cassius as he ran in after his father.

"Come on!" Daniel shouted, leaping towards the Herald Unit. "Let's settle this!"

. . .

Professor Kozo Fuyutsuki watched and waited as the Imaginary Lilith, for that was all it could be, rose into the air, shattering the red world around him like glass and revealing a golden, almost tiled look to the space they now occupied, a twinkling wave of light transforming the Infinity Evangelions that still remained here, along with all those around the world, condensing them into still more perfect vessels, pale and porcelain-like women, headless, that began to fly into the air.

"So," he said quietly as a wave went past him, "it finally begins."

The Ayanamis that commanded this Vessel paid him little mind. Not that it mattered much. It wouldn't be long now until he, and everyone else on this ship, was rendered into LCL, released from the pains of this world. At least here, he would have a show, as he watched the Infinite Vessels grab each others' hands, those still in the air becoming a swirl of spiraling patterns.

He pulled an old photo out, and studied younger days. Happier days. 'Yui…' he mused silently. 'I'm sorry. I should have done something sooner. But… I miss you.'

Then, he heard a distant thump, a crunch of what must have been metal somewhere close. "What the…"

Then, the world went blank as the Hirnstamm module the bridge was safely tucked away in screeched out of its closed position, snapping open to reveal a set of somewhat distant figures. Two of them moved, and the distance began to close rapidly as the command gondola screeched forward itself, stopping in the opened position these people had somehow forced it into as the force of the impact sent several Ayanami clones flying from their seats.

Fuyutsuki reached out on instinct, then his eyes went wide as a man, moving in a swirling fashion almost like a kata, somehow slowed the nearly half-dozen Ayanami's floating gently to the floor.

"Who…" he asked the assembled group, his eyes going wide at the remains of at least 3 White Cells scattered across the command gondola's floor.

"Val, this is Rescue!" one of the men there said into… something. "We're here with Fuyutsuki! Can you get a lock on us?"

"We can, Rescue." A woman's voice replied. "Prepare to extract."

"What is going on?" Fuyutsuki finally said. Then, he seemingly had his question answered for him, the bridge of the Gebet fuzzing out of existence as he appeared… somewhere else.

"Congratulations, Deputy-Commander." A man he hadn't seen in years said to him.

Fuyutsuki was silent for a moment as he tried to process all the faces that he was seeing, for the first time and after so long. "I suppose," he finally said, "that I will be able to thank Mari for this?"

"That you will." Doctor Akagi said, quite literally beside herself, or at least a version of her with a hair color he hadn't seen in decades. More than a few people here were in a similar situation. Except…

He looked over at Ms. Katsuragi, his brow furrowing slightly. "Are you… this world's version of Colonel Katsuragi?"

Misato shook her head. "Captain Katsuragi is still on the Wunder. She'll be guiding it in as phase 2 starts."

Fuyutsuki's eyes went wide. "Why?"

"Partly by choice, Sensei." a voice, its owner hidden from his sight but still achingly familiar. "But also by a grievous act of Interfacing. Magic so to speak."

Gendo Ikari, his eyes bare of any glasses or visor, made his way through the small crowd. "She will not sacrifice herself in vain, however. We will make sure she returns to her family."

"Gendo…" Fuyutsuki said quietly, stepping forward. "It's… it's good to see you again. Like this."

Gendo smiled. He smiled, and took Fuyutsuki's hand. "I'm glad you could see what you remembered of me, at least one last time."

Gendo looked back, and Fuyutsuki followed his gaze, gasping softly as… she walked forward. As if out of the picture in his hand. "Yui…"

"Hello, Sensei." Yui Ikari said slightly. "It's… good to see you."

For the first time in what felt like ages, Kozo Fuyutsuki smiled fully. "And you too. At least to some extent."

He took a deep breath. "But I assume that we'll have time for reunions after this has ended. What is next?"

"As far as we can tell, Sensei," Yui said as they walked out of the room they were in, "this world's Gendo is attempting something beyond the confines of the Instrumentality Project. Not only is he attempting to bring the souls of all humanity together, but he's also attempting to elevate them all to the level of Angels."

Fuyutsuki's eyes went wide. "How? We have no idea what might happen if something like that occurs."

"We certainly don't." the other Doctor Akagi agreed. "But I think that whatever Ikari has become does."

. . .

Daniel, Nynrya, and the kids, almost six bodies with a single soul, weaved and dodged in and out as they used what strength they had left to give, their weapons and attacks glowing with a power that they'd restrained until now. Both Ikari and young Shinji seemed almost, but not quite, amateurish in their attacks, blocks, and parries in comparison to the flowing, almost dance-like attack their compatriots gave.

The Spears, however, seemed to make up for whatever deficiencies they might have had in comparison, cutting through the attacks and defenses the Hollow Saint put up with an ease that was only matched by the Destined Death that Daniel now channeled in bursts, graying skin on Unit=00's arms slowly healing.

Even with how exhausted he was, how exhausted they all were, there was a fire in Daniel's heart that he only partially got from Asuka, sharing it with the others as they kept on pressing the Hollow Saint. He was genuinely trying now, making an effort that was keeping them at bay for the moment, dealing our almost as many wounds as he received in turn.

They were close. The thought of it, for all of them, was exhilarating.

Finally, as Daniel flowed back from a strike, Rei and Kaworu lashed down the Herald Unit's arms as Shinji and Asuka, wielding hammers of flame and unforged metal, of all things, crashed in, past the defenses that tried to stand against them, and sent the hammers flying into the Herald Unit's chest, the sheer force of the impact shattering his manacles and sending him flying.

He landed on the ground near the glittering NERV-HQ pyramid. And for long moments, he didn't get up. He didn't so much as even move.

The HERZ Units and Nynrya, beset by exhaustion as they were, paused for a moment. "Is this it? Did we just win?" Nynrya asked, and Daniel shared fully in the hope that suffused her voice.

"It will be once we lock him down and give Jameson the time he needs," Daniel said, not risking saying anymore in case the Hollow Saint was still listening in.

A flash, Rei's point of view from behind him, gave Daniel all the warning he needed to turn and block the plunging blow that Unit-13 offered him. "Ikari," Daniel said calmly. "Focus on priorities. We're so close to ending this, here and now."

"That we are," Ikari replied. "You are exhausted now. When your power is rendered inert as well, the ritual can continue and be completed."

"Father!" young Shinji shouted as he interposed himself between Ikari and Daniel, batting aside the next strike as Daniel put up his guard.

"Foolish boy," Ikari said, drawing back in a measured retreat as young Shinji charged after him, meeting blow for blow. "My will cannot be surmounted. This world will bend to me."

"Nynrya!" Daniel said. "Help him!"

Nynrya leaped forward, Unit-13 slapping aside her blades with an AT Field-veiled arm.

"I'll go!" Kaworu said, Daniel catching Unit=06 beginning to move.

"No!" Daniel said as he began to turn. "We need to finish…"

His next words were cut off as a lashing tentacle, thick as his torso was wide, crashing into him, flinging him away as he tumbled through the air for terrifying seconds. He felt the breath leave his body as he slammed into the far wall, sliding to the ground weaponless and wheezing as he desperately tried to piece himself together again.

He looked up, and Ikari, young Shinji, and Nynrya were gone, the trio now likely on another mental battlefield all their own.

And he barely needed to enhance his sight to see the glowing golden power that wreathed the Hollow Saint as the Herald Unit he piloted stood against four Children.

Asuka, of course, was the first to act, charging at the Hollow Saint with a war cry that echoed through Daniel's soul and striking at him over and over, years of training shining through as she ducked and dodged and weaved, the others joining her.

But the Hollow Saint simply waited for an opening, long and agonizing moments passing for Daniel, now on hands and knees, until he batted Asuka's greatsword aside, sending a bladed tendril blazing toward Shinji.

"No!" she screamed, leaping in front of him and beginning to hold out her right hand, an AT Field or act of Interfacing, Daniel could not say through the jumbled, terrified mess that Asuka's mind had become.

But it did not matter, the blade flying through and into her hand, through her wrist, and deep into her arm, Daniel feeling the blade stop at the elbow as they all screamed as one.

For Asuka, at least, the scream finally stopped as she fell to the side, a trailing tendril from the Hollow Saint piercing Unit=02's left eyes and shattering the Framework of her soul as she died.

Daniel acted on instinct, drawing the now untethered soul into him as he felt Asuka begin to go. "I've got you," he said to her as he bound the core of her soul to him. "I promise, I've got you."

He could feel Asuka's gratitude for a moment before it became engulfed by Shinji's rage, washing over all of them as it joined with all of theirs. He charged as well, a shield of sound deflecting what blows he might have taken as he pushed forward, his wild, almost frenzied attacks coming closer and closer to the Herald Unit's body.

Daniel was on his feet now, taking a labored step as Shinji finally connected, his bident of fire and thunder slashing through the arms of the Herald Unit as Shinji shouted in triumph.

The triumph was cut short as four tendrils, writhing and slithering across the ground, arched up, diving towards Shinji's back with a speed that caught everyone off-guard. Shinji's cry of rage became a scream of pain as Unit=01 was lifted into the air on golden 'wings', a scream that, as he struggled, became quieter and quieter as the Hollow Saint… infected him.

Daniel began to run, crashing through the massive lake that separated them as he reached out to Shinji's soul, rushing to quickly, however painfully, tear it from the body that Hamar'ramah seemingly wished to puppet. It was painful, for him, for Daniel, for everyone whose souls were linked together, but at last, Daniel pulled the core of Shinji's soul into his body as well, the weight and strain of such a venture now evident as Daniel went to a knee in the middle of the lake, Unit=00 nearly sinking out of sight as he tried to desperately adjust.

It did not keep him from feeling the overwhelming power that Rei and Kaworu channeled within themselves, the strength of their forebears, of Lilith and Adam, making even the very air, the very space around them, around Daniel, waver and tremble.

Daniel felt the rippling of an AT Field, almost like a tidal wave, as Kaworu directed it towards the Hollow Saint, Rei adding her power to Kaworu's and causing the world to tremble still more. He finished his calibrations and stood, the prismatic light washing out almost all else around him as he saw the might of old gods turned against one older still, a might which, despite all he tried to do, rooted him in place in awe at the majesty.

He could see the golden light, struggling to break through the prismatic light that pressed down on the Hollow Saint, growing more and more intense. It flickered for a moment, then began to grow in brightness and intensity, and above the growling hum of the AT Fields, he heard the shout of exertion and agony and rage that pierced all their souls.

Then, the AT Fields, Unit=05 and Unit=06, the world around them, was consumed in an explosion of fog, Daniel stepping back as he opened the spectral eyes of his Sight. Even still, he could see nothing. "Rei! Kaworu!" he said, speaking to their souls as even the connection between them made finding them only slightly easier. "Be careful!"

The AT Field that had been so powerful flickered out, its light fading as Daniel came to the shore. Then, as Daniel took a step forward, he felt a nearly blinding pain from Rei, a hot spike of power burying itself into her stomach.

Old memories mingled with new terrors as Daniel snatched her soul away as well, sick to his stomach as he felt Kaworu floundering in the mist, desperately trying to find something to hit, until he too was snuffed out, his head flying off his shoulders.

Daniel drew him, at last, into his body, anger burning within him as he felt the fog recede, and coalesce back into Tavis Farhaven. He looked up as he secured their souls within him. "How dare you make a mockery of my children's suffering." he spat.

"Their wounds are etched into the World Engine of this Echo," Hamar'ramah said calmly. "I have simply ensured that what must be comes to pass."

"What must be?" Daniel said incredulously as he marshaled his strength. "There is nothing truly immutable about Reality. Not this Echo, not this World Engine, and not you."

"You deceive yourself," Hamar'ramah said after a moment. "You, who leads these children astray with foolish dreams of a valiant resistance against the inevitable. Their suffering, their deaths, are on your head. And try as you may, however feebly now, we will fulfill the mandate of our creation to its fullest measure. We will bring order to Reality."

Hamar'ramah paused, and Tavis Farhaven smiled hungrily. "And if there is anything that we agree on," he said, "it is that you must be punished."

. . .

Young Shinji Ikari found that fighting alongside someone made a remarkable difference here, as he stood against his father.

"Your strength is of no use here," Father said as they went from place to place, most familiar to him, some strange. "The ritual will be completed, and all life will be equal to the Creators, as intended."

"By who?" Shinji shouted. "You? Whatever's in you? Fight back, Father!"

Unit-13 stumbled, pausing for a moment. Shinji and Nynrya both charged, slamming into a powerful AT Field. "Enough!" Father shouted, the AT Field pushing them back and sending them flying.

Young Shinji shook his head as he found himself, once again, in that strangely open Geofront, getting Unit-01 to its feet as Nynrya, strangely at height with Unit-01, rose as well.

She looked behind her, and Shinji didn't miss her eyes going wide. "Daniel!" she shouted.

Shinji's attention was drawn to where she looked, and his eyes went wide as he saw the bodies of the other Evangelions strewn around Daniel and the thing that he called the Hollow Saint.

Daniel was alone now, kneeling before a thin, dark-haired man who bound his right arm up in front of him, driving a crescent-shaped blade in between his middle and ring finger and pushing it all the way to his elbow as Daniel screamed.

"Your punishment begins with the wounds you withheld from them until now." the Hollow Saint said, a tendril of glowing mist rising from around him and driving a spike into his left eye.

"I'm coming!" Nynrya said, Shinji glancing between her and Unit-13, who stood oddly still, watching the spectacle unfold.

"No!" Daniel managed to shout with a ragged breath, causing Nynrya to pause. "Stay back! No one else is dying for me."

"But regardless of whether they try to interfere, you will not die, Daniel Theisman." the Hollow Saint said, four tendrils stabbing into Daniel's back as a ring of golden mist made a circle around them. "You will live as we punish you, render unto body and mind every pain and breaking that can be imagined. We will grind you down until the fragments of your very soul beg for a mercy that will never be given. And before the end, you will witness our triumph, and yours, for the Unity of all things."

. . .

Captain Misato Katsuragi stood on the bridge of the Wunder, watching intently as the world went even more insane around her. The Heaven's-Key vessels were now going up in flames around her, sinking to the barren earth below as HERZ and the rest of her cohorts broke them apart. The other fleet, strangely, was moving past them, beginning to circle the massive Rei that had now sprouted wings of white and lavender across its body, holding its detached head above its equally detached hands.

It was an utterly surreal sight. And now, she'd have to go through it, glancing over at a console that said that the Spear that they'd made from this ship was beginning to form.

"I've got to be crazy to say this," she said quietly, "but I think I'm actually going to miss you, Wunder. Thank you."

It was silent, but that mattered little to her as she spoke again. "Divert all power to engines, weapons, and AT Field. Set a collision course for the right eye of the target as planned on my mark."

She paused as the Magi system onboard did its thing, then took a deep breath. "Mark."

Misato felt the rumble of the engines kicking on, watched as her target, and the fleet, grew ever closer. This was it. Everything seemed to lead to this very moment.

As they came into range of the fleet, she closed her eyes for a moment as she listed to the distant thunder of the guns opening up on the Scion fleet, the Magi system deftly utilizing the AT Field of the ship to bounce around defenses and clearing the path for them, the AT Field otherwise deflecting what fires came towards them.

For a moment, as she opened her eyes to see the ships around her flashing with weapons fire and burning from the Wunder's returns, she could swear that she felt the ship humming, hear something that almost could be understood as it helped the ship towards its final destination. Was this what Rei heard?' she wondered, taking it in as it sang. Sang to the ship and sang to her.

Then, finally, something got past the AT Field, slamming into one of the guns. As the ship shuddered, something else made its way through, taking a radar dish and another of the guns.

"Focus the AT Field on the Spear, the engines, and the command gondola!" she said, feeling the ship's song change as her command was carried out. The guns continued to fire for as long as they remained, but at last, the ship was rendered silent as the last gun went up in an explosion, the rest of the ship soon pummeled by fire.

She watched out the window as a series of missiles came streaking toward the command gondola, toward her, and she braced herself as best she could as they slammed into the AT Field. Instead of exploding, however, they continued to drive towards her, their glowing tips like a drill slowly tearing apart the Field. Seemingly perfect for a defense like this.

Misato braced herself for the end, for a moment where she'd go up in flames. Then, her eyes went wide as a beam of energy swept across the missiles destroying them with a brilliant explosion.

What cameras were left on the hull of the ship showed the Val, their apparent savior, flying above them, the other ships flying below and beside her at compass points as the Evas flew around the Wunder in a grand, blazing procession that laid waste to all around her.

"Put any power left to the engines!" Misato shouted, a flame of boldness lighting in her chest and swelling as they pressed on, on and on and on through the fleet, explosions like fireworks going off around them as those ships wounded by the battle before finally going to their deaths.

As they drew closer and closer to the massive Rei-like Lilith, a ship, obviously heavily wounded, threw itself in front of the Wunder, perhaps hoping its sacrifice would slow it down just enough. But as Misato braced herself, the speartip of the ship, becoming a Speartip of its own, crashed through, the ship blooming with fire as its right wing swept through what was likely the power core of the vessel.

At last, they were through the line of ships, racing towards the giant Rei as it placed its massive, city-sized hands in front of its head. But the weight of fire directed right where the Wunder would be stopped was immense, a power that could likely shatter moons and puncture stars brought down on that single spot by all who wished the world reborn anew.

The fire stopped as she approached, and again the Spear that they had built pierced through, the now seemingly hollow wings of the Wunder snapping off with a pealing crash. But now, at last, she was through.

Misato took one last deep breath and closed her eyes as she dove toward the massive eye before her. 'I'll see you soon, little Ryoshi. I promise.'

Then an impact, and fire, and the feeling of something fundamental being tugged away before… nothing.

. . .

Daniel Theisman did his best to stay cognizant through the pain, a patch of emerald covering his now thoroughly ruined left eye as a seam of quartz ran through his arm, keeping it together.

As the Hollow Saint finally paused, Daniel slowly, slowly, got to his feet, taking as deep a breath as he could as he squared his shoulders.

The Hollow Saint, or at least Tavis, looked utterly confused. "Why?" he asked. "Why do you do this? You are at my mercy, doomed. What good is defiance here? Why do you persist in this pointless struggle? Because you somehow think you can win?"

"No," Daniel said quietly. "Not because I can win. Because it is right."

"It is right." Tavis was fully in the driver's seat at the moment now, his voice dripping with derision. "Your ideals will not survive this."

He drew an arm back, a blade of mist coalescing as he prepared to stab him in the chest.

Then, Tavis' eyes went wide as the seal loosened again, more Composites escaping through as a gleaming golden tide.

"N…No!" the Hollow Saint said, and Daniel watched the rift in the Herald Unit's back begin to close again.

Now. Now he had to act. No more blades, no more bullets. Just Using Destined Death to give life.

Daniel charged, taking the rift in his hands as he directed the power of Destined Death through them, pulling open the rift still wider. He felt Shinji, Asuka, Rei, and Kaworu, all four of them lending their power to him as he struggled to keep Destined Death contained, struggled to keep the rift open as he watched the Composites become almost like a pair of golden wings.

"Damn you!" he heard the echo, the tone of Hamar'ramah fading as Tavis shouted, driving a short blade into his stomach over and over again. "Stop this!"

But Daniel held fast, wings of starlight, sound and flame, ink and glass, metal and lightning, held him there with Tavis as the man tried in vain to escape.

Finally, Daniel watched over the shoulder as some forms of the Composites gained definition, arms, hands, grasping fingers that reached back into the body where they had been held prisoner, slowly but surely dragging something out. Someone. Him.

Daniel watched, spellbound, as what could only be Hamar'ramah himself flew past grayed, dying hands, the rift lifting of the Herald Unit and snapping shut as Daniel finally contained Destined Death again. A few Composites, seemingly staying and watching for a moment, remained until they too disappeared.

Daniel stepped back, stumbled really, and found himself falling into the arms of Nynrya. 'I don't think I've ever done that before.' Daniel's addled brain thought as he set himself to the task of healing himself, at least as best he could.

As he did he watched Tavis Farhaven sink to his knees in the dirt, hollowed gray eyes staring into his. "What…" he said weakly. "What have you done?"

"Saved what I loved," Daniel replied, his voice barely above a whisper.

The words made Tavis look down at the ground for a moment. Then, he became mist, his form collapsing as the mist dissipated.

He was gone. Hamar'ramah was gone. Daniel's part in this, at last, was finished.

I will say that I've toyed with Daniel (and potentially company) making a trip to Wallachia 14(27 if I recall correctly), perhaps touching base with another group of monsterhunting people who's lives Daniel has touched (who I may or may not be writing about now...). Whether as a Fragment or something greater, I'd have fun with Castlevania.

I would love to read that, especially if Shinji and co accompany Daniel. A funny thought that occurred to me is their reactions to this.

Alucard: I can't believe I had a better childhood than you.

Trevor: And your dad's fucking Dracula.

Chapter 44: One Last, Long Awaited Conversation

But in the end, the Children got what they needed. Everyone, to some extent or another, did. I won't pretend that the cost, the pain and suffering, wasn't high. But at last… it's just done.

The weight of Hamar'ramah's been lifted off my shoulders. Now, I can focus on helping this world fully before I and the others go. Where to? Well, who can tell at the moment?

- From the personal journal of Daniel Theisman

Minus Space, May 15, 2028

Daniel Theisman was tired. No, he was utterly exhausted. But there were still just a few more things to be done.

He stood after long moments, Nynrya helping him to his feet as he turned to face Shinji and Commander Ikari. They both still stood there before them, Shinji openly shocked and Ikari still unreadable with the crag-like fissure inexpressive mouth that now defined his face.

Ikari began to step forward, hefting the Spear of Longinus in his hand as he likely prepared to renew his offensive.

Daniel sighed. "Enough of this," he said wearily, stepping forward and placing a hand on the chest of Unit-13, stopping it in his tracks as he reached into the soul of the vessel of Adam.

The outline of his hand glowed as it pushed, slowly at first then all at once, into Commander Ikari's chest, the man before him once again as he rooted around in the space for a moment.

"Daniel…" young Shinji said somewhat hesitantly. "What's going on with your…"

Daniel looked over at Shinji, who pointed at his head. Frowning slightly, he raised his hand, a reflective gemstone showing him a hazy view of what had unsettled Shinji so. His face, even in the imperfect reflection, swirled, his hair shifting between blond and brown and orange and blue and ashen gray, and if he focused, his eyes darkened, then brightened in color before shifting to red and back to blue.

"Hm. Interesting." Daniel said as he looked back, finally catching hold of one of the souls he was looking for.

Pouring what little strength remained, he pulled, and from the chest of Commander Ikari, a hand in a crimson Plugsuit emerged, Asuka Shikinami-Langley coming along with it. As she finished emerging, her left hand had a hold of another hand, pulling with her Shikinami-Bradley.

"Whoa," Langley said, looking around at the sight of the ruined Geofront. "This feels… familiar…"

Then, Langley and Bradley's gazes both settled on Daniel, and they both gasped slightly. "Mein Gott…" Langley managed to say. "You…"

"Got your scars." Daniel smiled slightly as he reached, yet again, into the now thoroughly startled Commander Ikari, the smile fading. "You remember these, don't you? If you look hard enough."

Both Shikinamis frowned as Daniel pulled Kaworu out from Ikari's body, Langley looking down at her arm, felt around her left eye. "Yes… how…"

"My guess?" Daniel said as he walked over to young Shinji. "With how the Hollow Saint messed with time in this place, you're about to experience… a lot of different memories."

He paused as he stood before Shinji. "I'm getting Rei out. Just be ready."

Shinji nodded, taking a deep breath as Daniel's hand sank into his chest. After a moment, he pulled, Rei emerging from Shinji's chest and looking around herself in turn.

Daniel, at last, turned back to Commander Ikari. "Gendo," Daniel said quietly. "In any other place, at any other time, I'd try to reach out to you. Try to connect to that part of you I know is human. But you threw your humanity away, sold your soul to a being intent on the destruction of everything."

He stepped back towards Ikari, a hard look in his eye. "You became what I once was. And that is a line that cannot be crossed lightly."

"Now," Daniel said, pausing as he shoved his hand back into Ikari's chest, the man gasping as he went to his knees, "I have to ensure that there's still someone left in there."

Finally, he caught hold of… something, his arm shuddering from the effort as he pulled. Ikari's hands flashed up to Daniel's bicep, desperately trying to pull back whatever Daniel was uncovering.

Then, a quick tug, and Ikari's face slackened as Daniel pulled out his arm. "What did you… do?" Kaworu asked.

"I put what piece of Adam was latched on to Commander Ikari's soul into the body of Unit-13," Daniel replied simply. "Now, he can leave this place."

"Wha…" even with the state of Ikari's face, it was clear that he was confused. "Where…"

His gaze landed on Shinji and Rei, his jaw dropping. "Yui… Yui!"

He started to scramble forward, Shinji and Rei stepping back before Daniel caught hold of his shoulder. Ikari still reached out vainly. "Yui! I should have known! Please, let me help!"

Daniel placed a hand over Ikari's eyes. Whatever the man was about to say next died on his lips as he gasped quietly. After long moments, Daniel lifted his hand from Ikari's face, revealing eyes that were whole. So much like Shinji's, as he looked up at Daniel in desperation, confusion, grief. "What have I done?" he whispered.

"What you thought was necessary," Daniel replied softly. "Now, you will have to go and be judged when all this is over, as I must inevitably be. Not as a god, but as a man. Nothing less. And certainly nothing more."

Ikari sank to his knees, silent in his defeat, as a hollow crash, like a glass ceiling breaking in the distance, drew the attention of all others up as something glinted in the clear blue sky, dropping towards them.

Shinji, knowing now what was happening, stepped forward, reaching out to catch a remarkably strange Spear, a central haft of shifting colors, purple and green, red and orange, blue and white, surrounded by two strange, organic 'wings' that swirled around the central haft, each wing taking one of the colors as it shifted.

"Is this… the Spear of Gaius?" he said, the Spear of Cassius in his other hand forgotten for the moment. At least, until the Spears began to vibrate, humming softly.

Daniel frowned slightly. "That's new," he said, looking over at the Spear of Longinus, now dropped a little ways behind Ikari, as it too hummed and vibrated.

He walked over to the Spear, picked it up, and walked over to Shinji's side. "I wonder…" Daniel said, holding up the Spear of Longinus close to the other Spears. They began to vibrate more and more in turn, their forms fuzzing slightly as they came closer together.

"Do they combine?" Shinji said. "Like the other ones that woke up Imaginary Lilith?"

Daniel looked back at Kaworu, who seemed equally confused. "I would not know. I do not think… anything like this has ever happened before." Kaworu said.

Daniel looked back at the Spears. "Well, if two could awaken Lilith… then perhaps three could help us achieve still more."

He pressed the Spear of Longinus into the Spear of Gaius, Shinji following his lead. As the spears combined, the Spears of Longinus and Cassius disappeared into the Spear of Gaius, which began to shift and distort as the colors began to swirl faster and faster. The 'wings' became long and straight blades, the trident-like end of the Spear of Gaius becoming fused into a thick-bladed bident that flowed into the larger blades. At the Spear's end, once a hollow circle gripping a small, pointed rod, it fused into something reminiscent of Cassius's blade, the green gem appearing on its midpoint as the colors began to swirl into something like an AT Field.

Then, it was done, Shinji holding something utterly new in his hands as the other Children gathered around to see it.

"It's… a new Spear," Rei said quietly.

"Gaius Cassius Longinus." Daniel breathed, chuckling softly in amazement. "Would you look at that? The Spear of Destiny."

"Hope, despair, and the human will." Kaworu wondered. "A Spear that can pierce the very foundations of this world, its very soul. Allow one to begin all things again in the manner of one's choosing."

"A neon genesis…" Shinji said.

Daniel smiled slightly. "Indeed, Shinji. Whenever you're ready… take it away."

Shinji nodded rather uncertainly, looking down at the Spear in his hands. Then, turning the points down towards the ground beneath his feet, he poured all his will, all his strength, into just… changing things.

And as he felt the Spear of Destiny respond, he plunged it into the ground, the world disappearing in a brilliant light.

. . .

Shinji Ikari found himself feeling… well, he wasn't quite sure he could ever know fully what he was feeling at this moment. It felt… powerful was the only description that he could give it. He took a deep breath and felt something, many somethings, being released as he exhaled. Almost like a frosted breath, he could nearly see what could only have been the millions of souls interred in Unit-01 as they floated up and away, back to the world that they belonged to. A world that, with only a thought, began to right itself as he began to come apart in a way that was fundamental.

He focused on looking around for the others, trying to find them in a space that he could not perceive at the moment, a space that almost hurt to… see? Feel? Touch? None of those, and all of them at once, applied as he turned his attention back to his task.

As he looked and focused, he could feel… definition. Not quite a physical body, but becoming finite again, somehow, orderly, like lines on a canvas, words on a page. He wasn't sure if that wasn't quite literally the case.

'I need to remember.' he thought, and thus, he did.

The weight of all his knowledge, all the memories that the soul of Shinji Ikari had obtained over thousands, millions, of cycles of time almost looping, hit his consciousness like a sack of bricks. He didn't know how long it took him to sort through all the memories and view them with the somewhat detached, arguably necessary perspective that he needed. He didn't know how long it took him to ponder on it, consider it, how it related to who he was, or what it could be. He wasn't even sure if time had any substantial grip here.

"Hey there."

Shinji, somehow, turned in the void he floated in, coming face to face with… a drawing of Mari. It was almost sketch-like, lines defining face and body, splashes of color defining skin and glasses and Plugsuit. All of it was slowly becoming more refined, less sketch-like and more real.

"Mari?" Shinji asked. "How did you get here?"

"I'm Ms. Lifeline," Mari replied with a slight grin. "If I wasn't able to get here, I'd be doing a pretty terrible job."

She paused for a moment. "Besides, I think you know this isn't our first rodeo."

Shinji nodded, strange as the term was. Floating like this was familiar, now that he remembered. "But this is different. More."

Mari nodded. "Yeah. So keep focusing. Think of a place where we can land. Walk around. Make a start at putting everything else right."

Shinji closed his eyes, or at least thought he did and focused on the one place that, regardless of the time or distance, had always seemed like home.

"Nice digs." he heard Mari say. "You keep a tight ship around here."

He opened his eyes, and found himself, once again, in the living room of Misato's apartment. The first true home he'd ever had. "Thanks," he said offhandedly as he looked around, his gaze landing for a moment on the dining room. He remembered, in this latest battle, sending that same table, stacked with bottles of alcohol and cans, flying everywhere as he fought his father.

"It was usually this clean." he continued. "At least, after I got here."

Mari nodded. "I remember coming here, once. During one of the weirder loops. You did keep it a lot like this. Even with Ms. Misato's indulgences."

Shinji nodded. "So, where do we go?"

"Good question," Mari said. "Maybe let's try out the door."

Shinji looked over at the entry hall. "It's as good a place to start as any."

They both knew, Shinji was sure, that they didn't need to walk to the door. They could just appear there, appear anywhere. But doing something that was even moderately normal was grounding to Shinji, in the midst of all this… whatever this fully was.

They reached the door, pausing in front of it for a moment before Shinji took a deep breath and opened it. Thankfully, finding the others seemed to have an easy start.

Asuka, Langley it seemed, stood in front of them, dressed in a simple yellow tank top and exercise shorts. The casual dress that Shinji remembered she had a fondness for. And that matched Misato to a clearly non-coincidental degree.

"Oh," Asuka said, blinking in surprise. "There you are."

She paused for a moment, taking in Mari. "So, besides Mari, do you have anyone else with you?"

"Not that we can tell here, Princess," Mari replied with a shrug. "I'm guessing you managed to find us before we found you."

Asuka nodded slowly, looking at the apartment before her silently for a moment before looking at Shinji. "So," she said quietly, do you remember too?"

Shinji simply nodded, and Asuka sighed quietly. "So… what's next, then? We take a trip down memory lane to figure ourselves out before we go back to Kansas?"

Shinji, even with his vast well of memories, found himself rather confused. "Uh… well, seeing as we're here, and we likely have all the time we need to do it… why not?"

Asuka took a deep breath, nodded firmly, and then grabbed Shinji's hand. "Alright. Might as well dive in feet first, get this over with."

Shinji blinked, and found himself elsewhere, Mari gone as he and Asuka stood in what looked like a hallway of the Geofront's… medical center…

'Oh, no…' Shinji realized why they were here. What they were about to see. The worst part of their little story, as it had always been.

He looked over at Asuka and saw that, as much as she hid it behind confident blue eyes, she was scared as well. She looked over at him, and Shinji couldn't find it within himself to fault her somewhat accusatory expression. "You wanted to figure us out as much as I do," she said firmly. "So let's start with the worst of it."

Shinji looked around in slight confusion. "What… happened to Mari?"

"I don't know," Asuka admitted, a puzzled look of her own. "I think…" she paused for a moment as her brow furrowed. "She's, well, put together enough to follow us around if she wanted to. Unless…"

"She remembers this too, somehow," Shinji whispered.

They contemplated the possible versions of that fact, and Shinji, at least, searched his memories for a moment, desperately hoping it wasn't in the way he might have been thinking.

"Well, Shinji," Asuka said, snapping him out of his reverie. Her voice was quiet, and Shinji could hear her voice quivering, much as he was sure that she tried. "Let's get this over with."

Shinji took a deep breath and stepped forward. "Yes. Let's go."

They walked down the hallway, only distantly cognizant of the fact that they were still holding each other's hands. They slowed for a moment, seeing an open door coming up on their right. Then, just before they could stand before it, they came to a stop.

Shinji looked over at Asuka, seeing the conflict more openly in her eyes. "Do you really… need to see this to talk about it? Do we really need to relive this?"

Asuka considered the question silently, looking at the door, then at Shinji. "Honestly…" she finally said. "No. Let's just… sit somewhere, okay?"

Shinji nodded as they walked past that door, eventually simply sitting on the floor, facing the window that showed a view from so long ago. They sat there in silence for what felt like ages, each of them trying to find some way to give voice to the tragedy that they had passed.

"So… why?" Asuka finally asked. The question, one that should have had a fire, a righteous indignation behind it, was instead contemplative. "I've seen you do it so many times. And even in any given Instrumentality, I've only ever seen your side of it. Never truly wanted to understand it. Why?"

Shinji sighed. "I was… past my breaking point. Everyone I cared for was distant or dead. Everyone expected me to keep on doing the impossible. And I desperately needed help that no one was able to give me. No one except you."

"What took me over then was…" Shinji sighed as he shrank further into himself. "Base. Needy. Disgusting. You couldn't help me like you did back then. So I helped myself to…"

He paused, shaking his head. "Even talking about it like that feels dirty."

"Yeah," Asuka replied. "But I've done some pretty nasty stuff to you in that place, too."

Shinji nodded. "So, I guess I get to ask you the same question. Why?"

Asuka took a deep breath. "I finally saw you need me. Finally saw you acknowledging my usefulness long after I'd written it off. I got... angry. What took you so long? Why now and not before? Why here? And it all just… boiled over. And I remembered it, some of it at least, when I tried to punch through that glass to knock you to the floor after you woke up."

She sighed quietly as she looked up and out the window. "I'm sorry, Shinji."

"And I'm sorry, Asuka." Shinji's gaze followed hers.

It was silent between them for a moment, then they looked at each other. "Is it… really that simple?" Asuka asked.

"I guess it is," Shinji said after a moment. He paused as he frowned. "And I guess we should get used to saying that a lot."

"Yeah. There's a lot to say that about. For the both of us." Asuka admitted.

Then, she stood. "Well, let's go find the others while we keep apologizing. They have to be around somewhere."

. . .

Rei Ayanami floated calmly in the void of what must be Instrumentality, remembering not only her past lives in this world and time but every version of herself before now. But there was something… missing.

'My link to Lilith is severed here.' Rei finally realized. 'I am… alone.'

It felt almost fundamentally wrong to her. And yet, she knew it was true already. She had felt only a connection to the Wunder since her emergence from Unit-01, which was now gone. So, she floated, alone, in the void.

'No. Not alone. Where is… anyone?' she thought, focussing as she searched. But how could she find anyone in this void…

That question, at least, seemingly answered itself as she blinked, and found herself in her old apartment in Tokyo-3. Always downtrodden. Always in disrepair. Always alone.

"Then you and I are alike."

Rei turned to see… an even more bare room, and it was only a single room, a single cot the only furniture to mar the cleanliness of the concrete interior. On the cot sat Kaworu Nagisa. The human face of the ancient enemy that every part of her had screamed instinctually to hate, to shun, to kill. But now, that scream was… missing.

"How did you do this?" Rei asked, still somewhat cautious.

"As I'm sure you can tell," Kaworu replied, "I have a somewhat finer control of all this. A part of me derives from the Father. Adam, Kronos, Enki, Ataguchu, the Children have had many names for him. But Adam… something just sticks for him. As Lilith is an innate part of your self, Rei."

"Then…" Rei said, pausing for a moment. "You've seen what I am. What I am supposed to be."

"A tool," Kaworu said the words quietly. "An implement to allow someone to fulfill their desires for ascension, at the cost of those that we come to hold dear."

Rei considered the boy's words for a moment, then nodded. "Perhaps that is so. But even still, I cannot help but…"

She realized she could put an exact word to the usually vague, distant, fuzzy thing that she knew was an emotion. "I fear for your intentions with those I care for."

Kaworu nodded, his expression falling. "And, with past experience as your guide, you would perhaps be right. Only now have I decided to look back, study the past, after all this time."

Kaworu shook his head. "Even with all my age and power, I truly am still a child, aren't I?"

It was silent between them for a moment before Kaworu sighed quietly. "I realize, now, that there is so much for me to learn. To try and learn. For all my attempts, I still do not understand them. I still do not understand them."

He looked up at Rei, a searching look in his eyes that were so much like hers. "Do you?"

It was such a simple question. And yet, she thought and pondered silently for what felt like ages. "There are still things that I do not know. And yet, I think there I things that I understand that you do not."

Rei regarded her compatriot with a surprisingly firm gaze. "So, will you make the world one where we can perhaps learn together? From what I have gleaned from Doctor Akagi, research and experimentation are best undertaken in a space of collaboration."

Kaworu regarded her intently for a moment, and Rei didn't think either of them fully understood the look in his eyes. Then, he smiled slightly before Rei felt a ripple of unadulterated power wash through the room and her, changing… something. "Enough repetitions, I think. Yes. Let's go forward together."

He stood and approached Rei as a door appeared behind them. "I think there is much we can share with one another as we learn how to be more… human."

. . .

Asuka Shikinami-Bradley was in that damn room again. Not even the bunk room from so long ago, it was simply rows and rows of empty tanks. She walked and walked, trying to find someone. Something. She didn't know how long she'd been walking. Only that the room seemed to stretch into forever.

She didn't know where she picked up what she did next from, or if she'd 'picked it up' from anyone at all. As far as she knew, she was alone in this place. But she spoke anyway.

"I think I get it." she started. "The others, they're more important to whatever the hell this is than I am. The constants in whatever program this is. I'm just the unexpected variable. A little bit of scrap code that got caught up at some point in whatever this blender of time is."

"They change the world. Every time." her voice went quiet. "I'm barely even there. If at all. Who am I when…"

The question trailed off, sinking into a whirlpool of almost crushing despair. Then, she set her jaw.

"No. No, who I might have been doesn't matter. Right now, right here, I'm Asuka Shikinami-Bradley. I'm Langley's older sister. All the other Shikinami clone's older sister. I need her. She needs me. And I am not going to just go into some good night because my little bit is done!"

She finished the sentence with a shout, her defiance rising with her voice as she spoke. The shout continued as she did. "I'm going to find my sister, and her boyfriend, and all my friends! And I will not be left behind! I won't be a footnote in the story!"

"Perfect!"

Bradley jumped as she turned to face… Mari. That was right. "I wondered who was doing all the shouting when Princess ran off with the Puppy. I figured it was your sister. Must run in the family, eh?" she said with a shrug.

Bradley was taken aback for a moment, then scoffed slightly before chuckling. "Yeah, I guess it does."

Mari nodded. "And I get it, girlfriend. I spent a lot of time as a historical footnote myself. Now we're here, though. Now, the story's finished, and it doesn't matter what part we played. Only that we did a damn good job at it."

Bradley nodded, looking around. "It's going to be weird, though."

Mari glanced away in thought for a moment, then nodded. "Yeah. I guess normal life is going to be a little weird compared to what we've been doing. But I'm sure that Asuka Langley won't mind."

Bradley smiled. "I think she might if we have the same first name. But we can figure that out later."

Mari grinned widely. "That's the spirit! Let's go and find the others. Get out of this dreary little prison. I've got a great idea of where we should go next."

. . .

Daniel Theisman hadn't quite expected to be caught up in all this, but it allowed him to make sure a few things got done. For one, he sent the bodies of his kids' Evas back up into the real world, sent Gendo up to the Val for later alongside the souls, reattached to healed bodies, of his Children, and sat for a while as he healed some of the soulscars he'd accrued here, then simply watched and waited. He was alone here, wherever this white expanse was. It was… strangely calm.

Then he blinked, and he saw a mirror in front of him. He stood, approaching it, coming face to face with himself. The only difference seemed to be that his reflection had the mark of the Hollow Saint painted on his forehead, glowing softly. "Interesting…" Daniel said softly.

"I would hope so." his reflection replied. "Otherwise, this gets really difficult to try and do."

Daniel blinked. "That's… concerning. Am I still mad?" he mused.

"Uncountable years of wandering from place to place, a lot of the time with only your own brain for company?" his reflection replied. "It won't matter how sane you look, you can't change what's happened to your soul since then."

"But," it continued, "in a place like this? You have a chance. You have a chance to get rid of this thing. To finally be free. You defeated the Hollow Saint, sent Hamar'ramah packing in a way that he can't recover from. Now, there's only one last thing to do. Wipe this away, at last."

Daniel regarded the paint for a moment, his reflection still following his lead as he reached for the mark. "It's… tempting. Yes, it really is. But I know that just wiping away this thing isn't going to make me what I'm not anymore. This won't leave me even if I wipe it away here and now."

"But…" Daniel trailed off as a fingertip gently touched the middle of the mark. "I can change what this means. Make it a mark of pride instead of the brand of a slave."

With that, he drew his finger down, the mark flaking away as if it really were dried paint until, at last, it was hollowed out, a vessel for a will that was fully his. "Now that its old purpose is gone, I can make it whatever I wish. A hollow blade, able to be filled with justice instead of control. Raised to defend those that I love."

He stepped back as his hand fell from his forehead, and his reflection hummed softly. "So that's what we're doing then? Alright."

The mirror vanished before he could blink, and Daniel reached for his forehead again. It was untouched by anything that resembled paint. Had he actually… done that? It was possible. He'd have to find out.

"There you are."

Daniel turned and saw Nynrya standing before him. Now, they stood in the middle of a field, a city in the far-off distance, and a mountain range surrounding them. "Is this… your home?" Daniel asked.

Nynrya nodded. "Yes. It's been so long since I've seen it. Even in this dream… it feels good to be back. If only for a moment."

Daniel nodded, regarding her silently for a moment before he focused, channeling what little strength remained in him to tap into the transformative powers of this place. He willed it, and it was done.

He could see on Nynrya's face as it happened, the shock of being free. Of receiving a body, at last. He smiled slightly at the wonder on her face. "There you go," he said quietly. "The body that you needed for me to truly uphold my end of the promise."

"Daniel…" Nynrya whispered. "Thank you."

"It's the least I could do for someone who's watched my back like you have." Daniel paused. "Now, you're free to go. I'm sure that, if you want to get somewhere without me, this place will be swarming with Seabreakers soon enough."

Nynrya frowned. "Why would I leave?"

Daniel was silent for a moment. "You don't need to be tied to me. You've been that way for all the time I've journeyed. You deserve to see the rest of Reality on your own terms."

"And I will," Nynrya said. "With you and Eleanor and the others."

"Nynrya…" Daniel sighed. "You don't need me anymore."

"No. But I appreciate being by your side. And I will leave it only when I am satisfied."

Daniel regarded Nynrya with some shock. "Please, Nynrya. I'm not some lord to swear fealty to. You have no need to uphold some oath."

"I don't need a lord," Nynrya said firmly. "I want to stay with my friend, who has kept me safe for all this time. Who was my first friend after my darkest moment, and who I kept away from for so long."

It was silent between them for long moments, Daniel regarding the defiant glare that Nynrya gave him for as long as he could before he finally relented. "I'm sorry, Nynrya. I just want the best for you, after everything."

"And you have given me what you can," Nynrya replied. "Now, I can't wait to see what we'll find out there now that I can touch it."

He looked up, and she was in front of him, a hand on his shoulder and a warm smile on her face. "Thank you, Daniel. Now, let's go and find the others."

. . .

Shinji Ikari found himself, at last, on a familiar beach, a sea of blue lapping up against the brilliant sand in that cove that was so far away. Now, the line of ACC Pillars was gone, and only the brilliant blue sea stretched out before them. He and Asuka were… alone now. He'd felt something inside him vanish before they arrived here. He wondered if that was Mother, gone to be with Father.

"I can see why you'd want to come back here," Asuka replied, a slight smile on her face. "It's been too long since we've been anywhere so… peaceful."

Shinji nodded. "I just wish that the others were here to see it before we finally decide to go."

He looked over at her and blinked. She looked… older. More defined. And she wore a familiar yellow sundress now. When had that happened?

Asuka frowned slightly as he stared, then her eyes went wide. "The Curse of Eva…"

She let go of his hand, gently feeling herself. "We're… what we're supposed to be, now."

Shinji looked down at his hands. "Strange. It doesn't really… feel that different."

They looked at each other again, then out to the waves. "Well," Shinji continued, "this is as good a place to wait as any for the others."

He walked out towards the waves, pausing close to them as he took a seat in clothes that looked similar to what he'd worn before all this had happened. Asuka sat next to him, staring out at the waves that had been their first piece of tranquility in what felt like so long.

"So," Asuka said, "is this place still around? What with the water level being different and all in a non-Impacted world. This place is probably going to be a hillside once things get going."

Shinji frowned slightly, then focused, willing the skeins of reality that he found around him to change things ever so slightly. Then, he smiled as he let them go. "Well, it would have been. But there's a new beach there now. Just like this one."

"Careful," Asuka said with a slight grin. "Don't let that godlike power go to your head."

"What's this about godlike power?"

Shinji and Asuka looked up to see Mari and Asuka Bradley standing behind them. Mari was dressed in a button-up shirt and plaid skirt while Bradley simply wore a plain t-shirt and sweatpants.

"Oh, nothing," Shinji said somewhat airily. "Just making sure a view like this doesn't disappear when we're done here."

"Nice place," Bradley said as Mari sat next to Shinji, and Bradley next to Asuka. "Daniel told me about it, even showed me some memories of what it was like, but being here…"

"It really is nice," Asuka replied, her words contemplative and almost quiet.

They all sat in silence for a moment, watching the waves in contemplation. Then, they all heard two other pairs of footsteps on the sand. "Ah," a familiar voice said, "this is what I missed due to my confinement."

They all looked back to see Rei and Kaworu, standing and looking out at the waves dressed in clothes somewhat like what they had worn in years and loops past. "It is a nice view." Kaworu agreed. "Very tranquil."

"Well, take a seat and enjoy it, then," Asuka replied. "There's plenty of beach."

Rei and Kaworu both took a seat Shinji and Asuka respectively, the pair scooting aside somewhat to give them a view. And there they sat, taking in the beauty of an unspoiled world, or at the very least, the image of it that they would return to.

At last, Kaworu broke the silence as his gaze shifted to Shinji. "Shinji?" he asked, his words rather… hesitant.

Shinji looked back at Kaworu. "Yeah?"

"There are… things we need to discuss," he said, glancing away as he blushed slightly. "Things I need to apologize for."

"Well, don't worry about keeping it in here," Asuka interjected. "It's not like we need to go anywhere quickly."

So, it began. First with Kaworu and Shinji, the others all joining in with their own needed discussions, as they all just… talked. Laughed and cried, argued and celebrated, mourned and comforted, here in a sanctuary that was beyond the mere grasp of time and recognizable space. They talked for as long as they needed to, their words and silences able to fill a library full to bursting. The conversations ebbed and flowed, like the waves before them, until, at last, there seemed to be nothing more to say here.

Shinji took a deep breath, wiping away tears that he was somewhat surprised were there, and looked around at his friends. "Well, I think we should go, now. No sense in just… staying here, I think."

The others nodded, and in the blink of an eye, they were… elsewhere.

They all sat or stood on and around a bench, their clothes changed. Shinji now wore a simple t-shirt and chinos, Rei and Kaworu now could have almost passed for any other person in the world were it not for their hair and eyes, and Mari wore a pink coat and simple pencil skirt.

"Where… are we?" Bradley asked as she looked over at Shinji, as confused as the others likely were.

Shinji, however, looked equally confused. "I… don't know."

"You're at the Ube-Shinkawa station in the town of, well, Ube."

They all turned to the familiar voice to see Daniel and the woman he was fighting alongside approaching, the woman wearing a rather strange dress with swirling patterns on it while Daniel himself was dressed in something more recognizable, a rather sporting black leather jacket over a dark t-shirt and some jeans. "This place doesn't exactly mean much to any of you, I think," he continued, "but it represents something greater. The stepping stone to moving somewhere else."

"And where might that be?" Asuka asked, her eyes narrowed slightly.

"On," Daniel replied. "Wherever that might be. But for you, I think, it's the last station before you get home."

He looked over the group before him, smiling slightly. "It's good to see you all as you really are. I'm proud of you all. Say whatever else you need to. I'll be waiting outside."

He turned, then paused for a moment. "When you exit the station, don't forget solid winter clothing. It's going to be a little chilly in Antarctica now."

"Wait," Shinji said as Daniel began to turn away. "So… what about the Evas? Do they just… go away? Do we just leave them behind here?"

Daniel paused as he considered the question for a moment. "As long as there is anyone that remembers it," he replied, "then the Evangelion will live on in the hearts and minds of those touched by it. I doubt now that it could ever truly go away. But, that doesn't mean that the world needs them anymore. At least, at the moment."

. . .

Daniel, satisfied with his words, turned and waved as he walked away, up the stairs as Nynrya followed him.

"So," Nynrya said, "what comes next?"

"Well, I'm thinking we stay here for a little while," Daniel replied. "Help get things moving around the world. There's a lot of reconstruction that the kids are going to be privy to. With some help from our previous Echo and the League, of course."

They crossed through the lobby, past empty ticket booths and powerless turnstiles, and came to a stop in front of the door as Daniel looked over at Nynrya. "I am serious about those winter clothes," Daniel replied. "I'd hate for you to freeze to death."

"I've been in a sub-zero environment before," Nynrya assured him. "Come on. Let's go."

Daniel nodded, and the pair stepped out the doors…

And into the snow and ice of Antarctica. It was overcast, cloudy, and very, very cold, even with the clothing that they now wore.

Daniel blinked, pulling the heavy coat that he wore open somewhat and seeing his Plugsuit underneath. "Huh. Interesting," he murmured.

Then, he felt a twist of space behind him, looking at the Children of this world as they emerged behind them, thankfully wearing appropriate clothing for the weather as they looked around in awe of the sight.

"Wow…" Shinji said, looking at the vast field of snow that surrounded them. "Is this what winter is like?"

"In its most extreme form, yeah." Daniel chuckled. "You probably won't get something like this up in Japan… ever."

He looked up at the sky and smiled as he saw the Val descending towards them. But it did not descend alone.

He looked up as a fat, heavy snowflake, the first of many from this sky, drifted down, touching his nose. He took a deep, frosted breath as he closed his eyes for a moment, letting the first snowfall of a new world touch his face. After a moment, he looked back through the snowfall to see the wonder in the Children's eyes as they took it all in.

"Wow…" Shinji said, his breath a gout of frost as he caught snowflakes in his gloved hands. "Is this what the older me was talking about?"

Daniel nodded. "Yes, Shinji. Something like this."

Then, Daniel felt the buzz of a communicator in his Plugsuit, opening the channel Pneumaically. "Hello?"

"As much as I'm sure you'd love to play in the snow," Eleanor said, Daniel able to hear the wry grin on her face, "I think everyone would like to come home."

Daniel chuckled. "We'll be in soon. We'll even try not to make a mess in the entryway."

Daniel relished being able to hear her laugh. "Alright. Let us know when you're ready."

Daniel kept the channel open for a moment as the Children, truly child-like in their wonder, played for a little while with the snow. "Alright," he said as they began to shiver from the snow they had flung in each other's faces, "I think they're ready now."

No more needed to be said as they teleported into the Val. They would have stepped off the teleporter pad, had there not been a boarding party of sorts waiting for them, the assembled crowd of WILLE members clapping and cheering as they appeared.

Daniel looked around the room, then at the Children, as he began to shed the layers that were now beginning to stifle him. Clearly, this was still a little much for Shinji.

Those that had piloted the Evas, it seemed, all still wore Plugsuits underneath their coats and pants, sized up to fit them even now in their adult forms. It was a somewhat strange sight, but one that he'd gotten used to in the meantime.

Looking out into the crowd again, he could see it parting, a head of familiar strawberry-blonde hair making its way up to the platform, then out from the crowd as Eleanor stepped onto the platform, coming to a stop in front of Daniel.

They looked at each other, smiling slightly, then simply took each other in a deep kiss. The crowd, quite obviously, went wild, many hooting and hollering at the sight.

Finally, after long moments, they parted, Daniel's smile having become a grin. "I think you might have missed me." he surmised.

"Smartass." Eleanor retorted.

The crowd began to clear away as Daniel and Eleanor stepped off the platform, the Children, and a small contingent of the bridge crew of the former Wunder, following them to the bridge.

They emerged shortly, Mari regaling Midori and Sumire with tales of what had happened in the Minus Space as Daniel clicked his Plugsuit off, the rough 'uniform' of WILLE revealing itself.

He paused as he saw his Children, Shinji and Asuka, Rei and Kaworu, standing there waiting for them with the other Children from his Echo. He smiled, then paused as he took in their looks.

"Did you get that…" Mariah asked, pointing at Daniel's face. "Down there?"

Daniel reached up to his face, feeling the starburst scar around his left eye. He took off the denim jacket that he wore, revealing a long, pale scar that started at his right elbow and wrapped around his arm longways, passing through his ring and middle fingers like a river through a valley.

"Oh, yeah," Daniel said quietly. "These scars."

He paused as he looked at his Children. Asuka and Kaworu's scars were visible. Shinji and Rei's, while hidden, were still likely there.

Daniel took a deep breath. "They're a price worth paying for the destruction of the Guide of War as he was."

"But there will be time for that later." Daniel continued. "For now, we've got a world to rebuild."

He looked back at Kensuke, standing at the ready by the wheel. "Ken, set a course for Village-3. We're going home."

A/N: And that, ladies and gentlemen, Nephelim and distinguished others, is just about that. Save for an epilogue that's waiting for approval at the moment, the trilogy is finished with its creation. It's been a real joy, getting to create this absolute monster of a trilogy, and I'm looking forward, in the future to getting through the PNEUMA remakes/rewrites. But now, for a little while... I'm going to rest on any big, multi-book-spanning projects. After that, well, Daniel and company will be going to the stars of another Echo. A Spectre Echo, if you will. So, stay tuned for that when it comes out... a few months from now, perhaps?
