The Lords Unforgiven are one of several Successor Chapters of the Legion Penitent, the famed First Successor. Much like their progenitor-chapter, the Lords Unforgiven boast a sizeable store of Crusade-era wargear and vehicles, preserving the might of the Great Crusade. They are highly disciplined warriors who rely on rapid combat insertion via drop pod. They specifically target high priority targets and seemingly innocuous positions to cull the enemy leadership. They espouse close combat far above ranged, though have shown that they are just as skilled in both forms of warfare. The Lords Unforgiven first appeared in the early 37th Millennium during the Defense of Cobalt Valley, providing crucial aid to the Cadian XV and XXII Regiments on Mihok Secundus against the Alpha Legion.
The name, "Lords Unforgiven", follows the naming conventions of the Legion Penitent. This cites some unknown sin the chapter has committed in the distant past. Like their progenitor-chapter, the Lords Unforgiven lack any psyker ability.
Chapter History
Appearing for the first time in Imperial records during the Defense of Cobalt Valley, providing aid against an army of renegade Alpha Legion traitors in 361.M37. The Mihok System had quickly fallen under the sudden strike, but when the renegade Legionaries reached Mihok Secundus, the found the world already garrisoned by the Cadian XV "Kalliagh's Heroes" and the XXII "Bloodhounds of the Emperor".
The two regiments held for nearly a week before the Lords Unforgiven appeared in orbit. The chapter fleet destroyed the traitors' ships and bombarded the Alpha Legion with lance strikes and precision drop pod deployments. In mere moments, the Alpha Legion had been defeated and the system saved.
Born of Disgrace, They Fell from the Sky
The Lords Unforgiven are the second eldest of the known Successor Chapters of the Legion Penitent. It is believed that a schism in the Legion Penitent led to the Successor's creation; the rebellious sons leaving to become a new force of astartes. This is countered by the Lords Unforgiven' fanatical loyalty to the Legion Penitent and there is little to refute that.
Like the Legion Penitent, the Lords Unforgiven lack any psyker ability and have exhibited signs of sharing the elder chapter's propensity for blanks; soulless abominations who are an anathema to those touched by the Warp. They are immune to all Warp effects and sorcery, seemingly dark voids to the sight of the Warp-touched and psykers. This makes them incredible assets in any fight against Chaos and Inquisitorial efforts to bring the Legion Penitent and its Successors under their authority have failed repeatedly. Other than several astartes joining the secretive Deathwatch, the Prospero-born astartes defy the Inquisition on a regular basis.
Chapter Badge
The badge of the Lords Unforgiven depicts a man being pierced by a sword.
This possibly has origins in their supposed sin against their progenitor-chapter, the Legion Penitent, though the exact details are unknown.

The Defense of Vidium (649.M40) - The Lords Unforgiven come across Hive World Vidium in the midst of a Dark Eldar raid. The raiders are slaughtered for their heresy.
Victory Over Emiline's Hope (425.M41) - The Lords Unforgiven deployed over the planet, Emiline's Hope, in the Yerena System. They fought against an Ork Waagh! fleet under the command of the Arch-Maniac of Calvera, destroying the invading fleet in the void. They failed to prevent a small ork force from landing upon the world and assaulting a Sororitas convoy ferrying the remains of an Imperial saint. Though the remains were preserved, a stain on the chapter's honor remained. The Lords Unforgiven swore an oath of reparation to the Order of the Bleeding Heart that has yet to be fulfilled.
Chapter Organization
The Lords Unforgiven is a Codex-compliant chapter of the Adeptus Astartes. Barring a preference to close quarters combat, the Lords Unforgiven carefully balance the various doctrines of the Codex Astartes to suit their needs. The chapter does not know (or does not reveal) the identity of the Primarch and turns their fervour to the veneration of the Emperor. They have also been known to adopt the recent Prospero practice of likening the sun to the Emperor's light, turning their prayers to the system's star as a more direct avenue of worship. Ecclesiarchal inquiries have caused great tension between the Imperial Cult and the new religious faction that has risen; tensions have only heightened since the current Chapter Master of the Legion Penitent, Solaire Canderom, has taken to this method of worship.
Leading the Lords Unforgiven is their Chapter Master, Velkan of Depths. Born on Prospero itself, he rose to prominence after his slaying of a greater daemon in single combat. Soon after, a divisive argument broke out between Velkan and several captains over their personal beliefs, resulting in a schism that drew over eight hundred astartes to Velkan's side. Together, these marines split from the Legion Penitent to become a new chapter, the Lords Unforgiven.
The Chapter Master holds supreme authority over the Lords Unforgiven, though there are rumors that he follows the directives of their progenitor-chapter, the Legion Penitent, without question. Similar rumors for all Legion Penitent Successors circulate the higher ranks of the Adeptus of Terra and Ordos of the Inquisition.
Arguments are made in the Legion Penitent's defense, citing the similarities to the Dark Angels and Ultramarines.
Leading the Chapter is the Chapter Command Squad, comprised of the Chapter Master, the Forgemaster, Head Apothecarion, the Honor Guard Captain and the Chapter Standard Bearer.
Below them are the Ancients; astartes who have been entombed within Dreadnought bodies after suffering wounds greater than his own incredible constitution can hope to handle. Astartes of the Lords Unforgiven are more sturdy than any other chapter, outside their bloodline, due to the massive amounts of augmentics one collects as they age. Oft times, a senior battle brother will be naught but his mind encased in an adamantium shell within his body. Such practices renders the need for a Dreadnought obsolete in most circumstances. It is only upon request and the most dire of circumstances that an astartes of the Lords Unforgiven is entombed into an adamantine sarcophagus.
Observations indicate that the Lords Unforgiven is slowly evolving away from this mindset as more and more astartes deny this urge with greater success.
Typically, the Lords Unforgiven sends out several scout squads under the cover of night to identify and designate high priority targets. The chapter will then deploy via drop pod or Stormbird right on top of those targets, engaging in melee while any scouts still remaining on the planet provide precision sniper support.
Should this be untenable, the chapter will deploy tactical squads numbering between ten and twenty marines per squad. This squad is usually led by a Sergeant and certain astartes are deployed bearing powerful special weapons, such as Barrage Plasma and Conflagration Pattern Meltaguns.
Supporting these squads are a variety of formations that change to suit every enemy, though each one features a majority of melee-oriented astartes.
The Lords Unforgiven does not maintain a Librarium due to their lack of psykers, exhibiting the traits of blanks through a flaw in their gene seed or some strange mechanism they refuse to share.
A Voyage through the Night
The Lords Unforgiven are a fleet-based chapter, commanding twelve ships of varying make and size. They regularly patrol the darkness of Segmentum Tempestus and the western edges of Segmentum Ultima.
Their fleet is comprised of two battle barges, four strike cruisers and strike destroyers, a class of vessel made redundant during the end of M32.
Battle Barge Ariamis - Flagship and mobile fortress-monastery of the Lords Unforgiven. Gifted to them by the Legion Penitent as a gesture of good faith.
Battle Barge Ariandel - The most recent addition to the chapter fleet, the Ariandel was built in the Prospero System by the Legion Penitent as reparation for a slight between the chapter masters.
Prospero Class Strike Destroyers are a reforged remnant of the Great Crusade designed and extensively tested by a joint taskforce of the Adeptus Mechanicus and Legion Penitent. Designed to revitalize the outdated voidship, the Prospero Class Strike Destroyer boasts more firepower than any destroyer. Rivalling low-tier strike cruisers, the strike destroyer relies on its superior speed and maneuverability to fulfill its intended role: a voidship capable of entering the upper atmosphere of a world to provide close range orbital support and rapid deployment.
So far, the design has shown great promise.
Notable Members
Chapter Master Velkan of the Depths - Velkan was taken into the Legion Penitent as a young boy during the Sanguinalia Celebration. The 5th Company Captain took the boy from the Prospero Orphanage after finding something admirable in the then-child. After many years of service, Velkan would rise to the rank of Captain of the Legion Penitent's 6th Company.
There was a disagreement in Velkan's personal beliefs and how they interacted with the chapter's glorification of the Emperor and the Sun. This disagreement simmered for over a century, coming to a head when Velkan took the 6th Company and seven hundred additional astartes with him in the creation of a new chapter. The captains of the Legion Penitent were outraged by the rebellious Velkan's actions but at the command of the 6th Chapter Master Ephraim the Bold, gave up retribution.
Velkan goes into battle wearing an unknown pattern of terminator armor with robes adorned similarly to the Dark Angels Chapter. Bearing a massive scythe as his personal weapon, Velkan is a dread reaper on the battlefield.
Emperor's Champion Aldritch - The close companion and trusted confidante of Velkan, Aldritch was among the same group of neophytes as the chapter master. It was during the Imholt Crusade that Aldritch would attain great glory in the destruction of the orks' gargant.
Aldritch enters battle in a variant of the MK II Crusade Power Armor, similarly decorated to Velkan's robes. He wields a massive scythe, though has been known to use a wrist-mounted Flamer when needed.
Brother-Captain Lymoan - Captain of the 5th Battle Company and a master marksman, Lymoan has led the 5th Company for two hundred Terran years. Under his guidance, the 5th has garnered many honors for the chapter.
Lymoan goes into battle clad in an Artificer suit of Mk VIII Errant Power Armor, armed with a power sword and Mastercrafter Stalker-Plasma Combi-Bolter.
Master of Recruits Vogal - Head Apothecary and 7th Company Captain, Brother Vogal ascended to the rank of captain after his defense of Illidan IX, leading the 7th Company's aspirants and scouts in a daring last stand against an Ork Waagh. Since then, he has served in both capacities as Head Apothecary and Brother-Captain, earning the title of Master of Recruits. For nearly a millennia, Brother Vogal has overseen the birth of hundreds of battle-brothers...and the births of their gene-sons.
Vogal goes into battle clad in a set of Artificer Terminator Armor, adorned with the sigils of the Apothecarion. He carries the Narthecium and a Stormbolter to defend the fallen.
Chaplain Pellis - A brother-chaplain of the Lords Unforgiven, Pellis has shown great promise. Honored by the Legion Penitent's Chapter Master Silas G'ware, he was gifted with a relic chainsword he later passed on to his gene-son, an Initiate named Vetch.
Pellis goes into battle armed with relics granted to him by the chapter, such as a Relic Power Fist and Crusade Pattern Plasma Pistol; both are Prospero variants. He wears a set of MK III Prospero Pattern Iron Armor with the pelt of an unknown beast at his waist, set in the colors of the Legion Penitent Chaplaincy.
Famed Chapter Relics
Mantle of Sin - An unknown pattern of terminator armor worn by Chapter Master Velkan. Its dark robes are stained with a mysterious black fluid and is curiously silent, despite its massive construction. It appears to be based off of Cataphractii Terminator Armor, aesthetically.
Ring of Sacrifice - A ring bearing a blank sigil, it marks the most honored of the chapter. The astartes who bear this ring are the first into battle, throwing themselves upon the enemy with reckless, yet silent, abandon. Their behavior is likened to the Death Company of the Blood Angels and their Successors.
Ashbringer - A heavy flamer with esoteric markings. Its make and origin is unknown.
