Some IRL matter made me put this off, as well as wondering how to structure this update exactly. In the end, I decided to make it a two-parter.

Among other things, an enlisted would have a better idea about things like what reasonably-acquired little luxuries might improve soldier moral or how much food we can expect them to scrounge up themselves and thus free space on the supply wagons for things like ammo and fuel.

They also would have a better idea about the sentiment of the civilian population, which is important when we're based in a city overcrowded with refugees and whose agricultural hinterland no longer exists.

Given that whatsherface is on the same front as us, better that our boss know the details so he can be forewarned of potential disaster.

Question for @Vocalend :

In Hertz's opinion, what does the Liutenant Commander want from her? It apparently can't be handled with him just giving her an order, and it requires Hertz in particular instead of the other mages on the front. It also warrants both researching Hertz and offering a favour in exchange. All this and knowledge of her own abilities and war maybe gives her some kind of a clue as to what's going on here?


To fellow voters:
I'm inclined to decline this offer. It seems to be shady (for reasons mentioned above), and we all know that if someone demands an immediate answer to a mysterious deal, it is always because further research to the subject would (rightly) guide the answer to be a negative.

Also, if the liutenant commander is trustworthy Hertz loses nothing by declining, and if he isn't Hertz shouldn't accept in the first place. This means that this is just an option to take an Unknowably big risk, for very minor gains. I'll wait for the QM's answer, but thus far this is something more suited to an opportunist adrenaline junkie than a regular person. We can of cause make Hertz be like that, but I'd rather go for something a bit smarter and careful.

She has absolutely no idea. A Mage is essentially a 'toolkit' and can be employed in many a circumstances. In particular though, it doesn't feel like Jorgen is lying or researched Hertz at all or more pertinently, picked her specifically. The topic came up and he offered a hand. It does not have anything to do with petty politics and what not though, so there's that.

There is also, however, a sort of unspoken rule that when trying to court a Mage, one needs a sufficient bribe/offerings/sacrifice. It's basically what happened on the start of the week, with Karamovich bribing you with the mutton and quail sandwich plus gourmet dinner arrangement for the past five days. The same thing, in effect, is happening with Jorgen. He's clearly willing to, in two days time, find (from the way the vote is going) an Enlisted personnel for Hertz. What remains to be seen, is what sort of services that the Lieutenant Colonel is willing to extract.

Also Hertz is a generalist when it comes to Ides Manipulation. She has high potential in Ides usage, but she's very much a jack-of-all-trades. A well-equipped toolbox, to extend the analogy.

I'd also like to add to "Why Hertz specifically?" Well, it could also that he's looking for a decent mage that just newly arrived and hasn't dealt with any of the local politics yet. Or Hertz's specialty happens to be exactly what he's looking for.
"Nothing to do with power plays and military politics" with Hertz's specialty that he can't just command her to do? The request afterward could be him asking Hertz to find spies or dismantle smuggling ring, neither of which is within Hertz's purview as a logistic officer. Well, the latter might be, if there's proof they've been mooching off the logistics.

I think I get it now. There seems to be a commonly known market for mage services outside of the military system. Taking that into account, we are dealing with a pretty normal trade here instead of anything too weird. A bit corrupt from the Liutenant Colonel to offer to change some Second Liutenant's posting for personal favours, but probably pretty mild considering the surrounding culture with nobles and all.

Yeah, that changes things. It seems that there are some norms to cover these sorts of exchanges, and that along with the good impression from the Liutenant Colonel suggests that Hertz won't get into too much trouble here. Enlisted personnel sounds ideal, with clear benefits and no extra troubles.
