An Offer She Couldn't Refuse [Exalted]

Who the fuck would use five Sidereals on a kill team for a newbie Infernal though? Like, that's literally 5% of every Sidereal in the world. :V

To kill 2% of all the Infernals in the world, obviously.

(ignore the fact that Sidereals have a respawn timer of 18 years, while Infernals have a respawn timer that is at minimum 10 days, but is more likely a few months if you use my houserules and thus acknowledge quite a lot of would-be coadjutors burn out before they can actually find someone to Exalt)

Huh. Godbloodes with obvious beastman characteristics. Tied to a local god.

Are we sure this isn't a Lunar plot, not a Sidereal one?

Five, huh.

Kind of a significant number in Creation, that.

They almost certainly want to talk to Aindriu; depending on how much trust is granted, those two escorts could be considered to be doing a favor or taking hostages.

Interesting question in why they want to talk to our heroine, though.

Are they looking for a Celestial Exalted in general, and Aindriu's just the one who's practical to locate, Blasphemy and all? Or are they trying to make contact with the Yozis for some reason?

They probably know more about Creation's cosmology than Aidriu does, regardless - and gods can have many and varied opinions on history.

You can definitely assume they're looking for something 'in the area' - it's not necessarily specifically 'an Exalt', but it's probably a person, with a specific site of interest a little north of where they are now. They don't know who, but they know that between the region and what they picked up about Aindriu from interviewing the refugees it might be what they're looking for.

They may not actually want a conversation - it's a reasonable thought, but Fionola's fears aren't baseless. They've sworn their word of honour that they'll get her back to the group safely, and that carries meaning in a premodern culture like this. But there are always people willing to break that word, and they haven't actually specified what happens after she gets back (whether that's 'look I didn't think I had to clarify I was gonna breathe' or 'exact words, she doesn't have to live longer than a minute after she gets back' is open to Fionola's paranoia).

So it's a question of how much of what they've said you believe, and what it means if it is true.

just you wait until the disguised druid dragon-blooded kill team reveal themselves

This is what Fionola fears - not specifically 'Wyld Hunt', but 'god-sent kill team'. I will say it's probably not a Wyld Hunt. Fionola radically overestimates Heaven's reaction speed.

This is a pretty meaningful distance out from the most developed regions of Creation. Aindriu Exalted about a week ago. The closest Yu-Shan gateway is about a month's travel away. By, like, airship, not walking. The Realm and Wyld Hunt resources are even farther out. 'Something happened' is known in Heaven, but Infernals are Outside Fate so it's difficult to get details on 'hey it was a Celestial Exaltation yo'. Even if a team was deployed to act or investigate, it'd be quite some distance away as of yet.

So, basic story: Heaven and Bronze Central may be semi-aware of what's up here and have a response on the way, but it's a long ways off from Pretannia. Any opposition Aindriu is dealing with right now is local, whether from direct observation (her dustup with the Rokan-jin), or from some kind of sensors over the region. The fastest things she's gonna see from the big guys are responses to completely different issues that just happened to be in the area and stumbled across her, no response to her from Heaven or the Realm is at all likely to be in Pretannia before she's gone to Hell. It's just too far out.

With that in mind, 'probably not Wyld Hunt' doesn't necessarily count out 'godblooded kill team'. They likely weren't dispatched by a central agency, but they could have been dispatched by their local divine parent/s (or ancestors, Malessan beastmen are basically swirling with divine blood so the divine ancestry doesn't have to be recent to recombine into a proper godblood), if said parent had senses or devices that indicated something of concern happened. Those would be pretty substantial senses or devices for a place out in the boonies like this - even Heaven's toys have a hard time telling what's going on with Infernals especially, though proximity could help - but it's not an impossibility.

It's less the oath - as you said, there's always people willing to break those - and more that she's leaving behind a fair chunk of her group, and likely a fair chunk of combat power.

Now, maybe she's simply betting that Aindriu's too exhausted after fighting a dragonblooded for that to matter, or that exact words will be enough to stall a fight until she's gotten Aindriu back to the refugees and her group reunifies, but those are gambles and these are pretty high stakes.

Not as such. Most Dragonblooded don't really know the difference between an Infernal and a Solar. For that matter, most of them don't really know what a Solar is. But 'some Forsaken are Green' appears to be not uncommon knowledge, if this backwater Prince is aware of it.

The fact that Anathema can have different colors is likely not too uncommon knowledge, so rumors and stories of new green ones wouldn't be too hard to believe, I imagine. There's already golden ones, silver ones, black ones and....um...hmm. Well, I can't remember exactly what other colors there are, but I know that there are more. So if there's green ones too, that's not so strange, is it?

More pertinently, not all Solars are yellow and not all Lunars are silver. And for that matter, not all GSPs are green.

Seriously - the acceptable range of anima colours is actually super broad even within splats. For example, Solars can be basically any colour the sky or sun goes - dawn pink, any range of blues all the way to deep midnight blue, red, orange, yellow, white...

(Also, for that matter, "I saw a green anima pillar" has a first reaction of "Oh, a wood aspect?")

The point that I was getting at is that Mirna likely has some rather choice opinions on opsec that contrast with Aindriu's opinions on casual murder of people who are not immediate threats. Providing that the God-blooded can ascertain that Aindriu is an exalt of hellish nature and that the God-blooded do not immediately start a fight.

The Immaculate Faith is as old as the Shogunate, that's at least 1000+ years old. The existence of the Anathema is a core part of doctrine, and the faith has been spread pretty efficiently throughout most of creation, it's true that most people won't know the complexities of what a Solar can do, but most people will however know that the wicked Silver Anathema from beyond Creation take three castes and the accursed Golden Anathema, the strongest among the Anathema, are said to consist of five castes, each one corresponding to their sins, and possess powers that seem human but at stronger levels obviously draw on the stolen might of the sun. Especially most Dragon-Blooded who are, in any way associated with a somewhat powerful polity will most likely know the basics.

It's largely unknown. A couple have been spotted here and there, but that knowledge is extremely local, and hasn't been particularly interpreted or disseminated yet.

Infernal Exalts have only existed as a concept for two years - Aindriu is the 13th to 20th to ever exist.

Leonce isn't aware of it because it's common knowledge, he's aware of it because a green Forsaken popped up in Pretannia two years ago, during the War.

He ran away rather than face a Second Circle Demon IIRC, and Aindriu thinks is dead. Telling people you ran away, even if you were facing a demon, isn't going to improve your reputation in people's eyes....and well after you figuratively sold your soul to the Yozi, returning and announcing you are Anathema is not exactly the best plan.

Julen apparently felt the same, because the boy's fist slammed against the wooden side of the wagon with a curse. "We shouldn't have let her go!"
This reminds me of a comment I've had kicking around in the back of my head for a while now. Because I've been playing with a story idea that would interact with this "doesn't think of themselves as a god, but is treated by those around them as a god", and when I first met Julen I found myself wondering --almost worried, but I'm not sure "worried" is the right word-- that this fic would end up scratching that niche well enough for me.

Which I guess is meant to be a sub-aspect of "good work, keep it up"?

Fionola frowned. She was too calm. "You've a Maeveblood."
"You've" doesn't match with "I am" in the next paragraph, so I suspect this is a typo/auto-correct-o for "you're".

The guy who ran away and who Aindriu described as dead in her writing? Or am I getting stuff mixed up?

Yes. The second battle of Krellen Ford featured the Tepet forces plus local auxiliaries facing off against the Bull of the North's sorceress, the Zenith Solar Samea, along with numerous of her summoned demons. Cearr, the heir to the Talinin throne, was in command of the Talinin force at the time.

During the battle, the Second Circle demon Florivet attacked the Talinin group. Cearr's nerve broke, and he ran like fuck, while Florivet broke through the force and inflicted grievous casualties (including wounds that would've killed Fionola if Aindriu hadn't provided immediate medical care). The battle was lost, and the Tepet/Talinin forces withdrew to lick their wounds and come back later.

Aindriu doesn't know, but Cearr Exalted as an Infernal after the battle, and provided what support he could without being spotted by the Tepet because being an Anathema next to a Realm force is just all kinds of awkward even if you're on the same side they are, before eventually going to Hell for his duties.

Aindriu is as far as she knows the only living witness to Cearr's flight (most of the other people close enough to see him run died as Florivet hit), and has been spreading the story that he died valiantly in battle rather than ran, because fleeing from battle is a deep shame in this culture, and there's not a whole lot of position left for him even if he is alive - he's forfeited a lot from running away, and he certainly would be voted out as tanaiste quickly without extensive use of social charms. He could regain a position as a private citizen with a lot of work (he's forfeited his honour-price, which functionally means he's in debt to the clan for the price he'd have to pay if he murdered a king - in most practical terms someone who fucks up this hard is most likely going to have to drop to a position of slavery, though it wouldn't necessarily be all that bad since the owner would be his father), but regaining a position anything like what he held before would be the kind of effort that gets legends told about people. Aindriu might have privately told his father and he'd probably be glad Cearr was alive despite the shame, but the King was dead by the next time she saw the capital. She never really liked him (childhood bully), but she's covering for him anyway.

Entirely unrelated to any of this, Florivet has gone back to Hell since the War (his term of service ran out and Samea summoned another demon rather than renewing his contract), and is paying absurd amounts to people who'll keep Cearr distracted from learning Sapphire Circle Sorcery.

Or even a Solar Akuma or Infernalist!

And if I remember correctly there was a Solar from the East whose anima light was color of the gunlight shinning through the leaves.

I know this was probably supposed to be 'sunlight' but I choose to assume it really is gunlight, because that sounds somehow awesome.

"You've" doesn't match with "I am" in the next paragraph, so I suspect this is a typo/auto-correct-o for "you're".

Deeeerp, thanks.

So... a girl that Cearr bullied as a child lied her ass off to preserve his honor and legacy in his homeland. This girl is now his Peer, and mainlining an Isidoros/Adorjan cocktail of "eccentric." Fun times.
