What if the Trump/Vance Administration handled the Second World War?
A Paranoid Fever Dream Political ISOT Story by E350

Oh god no.
Yep.

Aren't you already doing that ISOT story over in Fandom AH on AH.com?
Yes, this is a side project. Also I'll probably reupload that here at some point.

Okay, so what's the premise? Just Trump and Vance?
No, nothing so simple. It's them, the Roberts court and the GOP members of both houses of Congress.

WHY.
Because I need to think of a world that is worse than ours to function right now.

So this is basically an ASB handwave to get them there, I suppose.
Pretty much. Everyone in 1941 remembers Trump and co running against FDR and winning, and the ASB handwaves the court so that nobody questions that either. We're also going to suppress the issues that people like Clarence Thomas and MTG would cause people in the 1940s.

I originally posted this in PolChat on AH.com but didn't know ASB timelines were banned there and it was thus locked. I was recommended to move it here.

So, yeah, that's it. The brakes are firmly off and the train is about to sail over the broken bridge into Shitshow Canyon. Hold on tight...

TRUMP INAUGURATED: VOWS TO PLACE AMERICA FIRST

WASHINGTON DC, January 20 1941 – Donald J. Trump was inaugurated today on the steps of the United States Capitol by the Chief Justice, Mr. John Roberts, in front of a large crowd of supporters and wellwishers.

The President, accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Melania Trump, and his Vice-President Mr. James David Vance, arrived at the Capitol in an open topped limousine after a brief morning tea with leading members of the GOP caucus at the Hotel Washington. There he was met by outgoing President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, where it is said that he engaged in a cordial but frosty conversation.

After swearing in was completed, the President turned to address his supporters in his typical off-the-cuff style. He referred to Mr. Roosevelt, sitting behind him, as 'a real war monger' who the British had 'treated as a sucker' throughout 1940. He in turn promised to 'bring an end to this big, terrible war' without 'costing the American taxpayer a single dollar.' He also pledged to roll back the social programs of the 'New Deal,' and to investigate senior Roosevelt administration figures for perceived corruption.

Towards the end of his speech, the President directed his words at British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, promising the war leader that he would 'soon broker a deal that would work for both sides' of the conflict. He once again expressed his intention to meet personally with the German dictator Adolf Hitler as soon as possible.

The British ambassador, Viscount Halifax, congratulated the President on his inauguration, but cautioned that the Prime Minister may not be able or willing to consider a peace deal that would be disadvantageous to Britain's strategic situation.

BRITS TAKE TOBRUK

ALEXANDRIA, January 22 1941 – General Sir Archibald Wavell's Headquarters has announced that the 6th Australian Division has taken the Libyan port city of Tobruk from the Italians…

AVIATION HERO CHARLES LINDBERGH AT WHITE HOUSE

WASHINGTON DC, January 23 1941 – Charles Lindbergh was interviewed leaving the White House today with Vice-President Vance after what he called a 'productive meeting' with President Trump…

Conversation between Trump, Vance and Lindbergh, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover

TRUMP: …where is Toe-brook, anyway? Is that- is that how you say it?

LINDBERGH: I believe it's a major port city on the Libyan coast, Mr. President, the, uh, northeastern Libyan coast. By all accounts the Italians are collapsing…

VANCE: So what? Second rate troops. I mean if a bunch of limp-wristed pussies like the Aussies can take 'em–

LINDBERGH: I, uh, thought they had a good reputation? As sold–

VANCE: Trust me, I know Australians. They're just a bunch of nanny-state pussies kissing British ass.

[Long silence, audible sounds of discomfort/confusion.]

LINDBERGH: Yes, yes, ahem! Anyway, a-as soon as the Germans involve themselves, I think the Brits will find themselves wrapped up pretty quickly, which is, uh, probably when Churchill will come to you hat in hand.

TRUMP: And what do you think I tell him? What do you think?

LINDBERGH: Well, Mr. President, I think he thinks he can ask you to step in line and give him charity like a good little colonial subject, so what, what I'd say is, um, that he can go back and tell his Jew masters that the answer's no.

TRUMP: His Jew masters?

LINDBERGH: Oh, you didn't know? All the anti-German people are in the hands of the Jews, Mr. President. Them and Moscow, although they're basically the same thing…

"...and today we've got this William Bullitt guy, Weird Willy Bullitt, he's telling the House; 'oh! We have to back the British, because if we don't Hitler's gonna cross the Atlantic, and he's gonna take us all over.' And I'm telling you, we have the greatest battleship fleet in the world… the greatest fleet in the world… the greatest army in the world… and Hitler doesn't have any problem with us. Trust me, I believe we can do very good business with Hitler, once this war is over… and I will end this war…" – President Trump, 'radio chat', Jan 25 1941

"How big does he think our army is?!" – Dwight D. Eisenhower, in conversation with George C. Marshall, Jan 25 1941

HITLER EXPRESSES INTEREST IN DOING BUSINESS WITH AMERICA

BERLIN, January 30 1941 – In a speech at the Berlin Sportpalast on the eight anniversary of his rise to power, the German Fuhrer stated his appreciation of President Trump's stance on the war. While Mr. Hitler claimed that any ship under any flag carrying aid to Great Britain would be torpedoed, he said that he had no quarrel with the United States, and was happy to attend a peace conference on neutral ground should Mr. Churchill agree to do the same.

However, Mr. Hitler's statement that he would no longer be able to accept a 'white peace' and would be forced to demand concessions are not likely to go down well in London…

Encounter between a journalist for the New York Times and President Trump, Jan 31 1941

TRUMP: …I think he should be asking for concessions, I mean, he's hammering London, he's hammering Coventry, he's hammering all these cities, there's gonna be nothing left…

JOURNALIST: But Mr. President, they're a fellow democracy, aren't they? Surely we can't treat Britain and the Nazis as morally equivalent…

TRUMP: I think there are very good people on both sides. On both sides. And it's not like the Brits are clean either. They bombed Berlin, didn't they?

JOURNALIST: I… I do believe most of the bombing has been–

TRUMP: Believe different things.

"...yes, I'm calling from Number Ten… yes, we need, uh… Winston's requested some of the stronger stuff…" – Phone call from 10 Downing Street, Jan 31 1941

LEND-LEASE ACT TO BE VOTED ON IN HOUSE ON SATURDAY

WASHINGTON DC, February 4 1941 – The Lend-Lease Act (HR. 1776), introduced to the House last month by Representative John W. McCormack, is to be voted on this weekend.

With a Republican majority in both houses of Congress, the Democratic Party must convince members of the GOP to vote with them, a task which appears to be proving somewhat forlorn. Despite this, Mr. McCormack showed an optimistic face to reporters to-day, stating that he believed 'the members of the Grand Old Party would put country before party and support this bill.'

House Speaker Mike Johnson was rather more sanguine about the bill, stating that 'America has bigger domestic and foreign issues to consider than propping up the British.' Outspoken Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene was decidedly firmer in her response, declaring that she would 'not vote to send a single dollar to Britain when it could be better spent upholding American values at home…"

Conversation between Trump and Vance, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (Feb 6 1941)

TRUMP: …so Wilkie said…

VANCE: Uh… we German-Americans reject the, uh, lust for power of the present German government.

TRUMP: Tell him to speak for himself…

[Notes from Hoover: Gen. Marshall arrived for briefing ten minutes later. Conversation as follows.]

MARSHALL: …RAF bombing of Dusseldorf. The damage appears to be light, but it's important for the British to demonstrate that they can–

TRUMP: –he keeps crying to us about German bombs and then he does this?

MARSHALL: I beg your pardon, sir?

VANCE: Churchill's trying to present himself as this great, uh, this great bastion of goodness, but he's bombing German civilians.

MARSHALL: …there's a significant disparity in bomb weight here, Mr. Vice-President.

VANCE: Uh, sure, sure. But we can use this.

MARSHALL: I beg your pardon?!

VANCE: Put everything England does on blast, and we can, uh, we can sell the peace idea a bit better. I mean, that Gallup poll said, what, 53 percent of Americans want to help the Brits? We blow things like this up and…

MARSHALL: Mr. Vice President, with all due respect, Germany–

TRUMP: What's MacArthur up to?

[Long pause.]

MARSHALL: Sir?

TRUMP: He's a good guy, very good guy, very good general. One of the best. Anyway, that'll be all, me and JD are gonna… we're gonna have a little talk in private.

MARSHALL: …um… yes sir. One more thing; Admiral Stark has asked me to inform you that he'd like to speak–

TRUMP: That'll be all, General.

MARSHALL: …yes sir.

[Footsteps; sound of door closing.]

TRUMP: So yeah, see if we can't get this Dortmund thing on blast.

VANCE: Dusseldorf.

TRUMP: Right.

LEND LEASE ACT FAILS AFTER PARTY LINE VOTE

"...I am sure that the news from America has proven as bitter a blow to you as it has to me. Nevertheless, this government, on the advice of all three of the arm services, are resolved to continue the struggle, until such a time – and that time will come – that the New World sees the dangerous tide sweeping over the Old, and readies its vast battle fleets and it's grand armies for the inevitable struggle.

My faith in the American republic and the American people remains unshaken; yet for the time being, we must be prepared to bear this terrible burden ourselves. There remain practical, sensible reasons to continue to fight. Our battleships, our fighter planes, our great steel wall remains unconquered, despite all the force the Narzee war machine has thrown at it. Our soldiers, and those of our loyal empire and dominions, have dealt grievous blows to the Italian Army in Libya and Somaliland, and are prepared to hold against the Germans, should they intervene in Greece and the Balkans…

…to President Trump, I say I am prepared to speak with you at any time and at any place, and to have serious, practical discussions regarding the futures of our two great nations. But to Hitler, and to his armies standing on the southern shore of the Channel, I have only one thing to say; the same words uttered by the brave French defenders of the fortresses of Verdun.

'Vous ne passerez pas!' You shall not pass!"

– Winston Churchill, speech delivered over the BBC, February 9 1941

"Listen to him… you shall not pass, what's he trying to prove? Germany can absolutely pass his battleships. They've got these planes, these big, these big beautiful planes, they're called… Stukas! Stukas! And they can dive down on a big battleship, they can dive down, and they make this screaming sound, they go 'nrrrrrrrr' and they drop their bombs, and boom! There goes the battleship… there goes the battleship…"

– Donald Trump, White House press conference, February 10 1941

"It was like listening to Billy Mitchell after a brain aneurysm." – anonymous reporter, shortly after aforementioned press conference.

It is my belief that President Trump is possibly insane, but it is an insanity that could prove very useful to us… the Fuhrer has ordered von Ribbentropp to contact the American administration. Henry Ford is being considered as a possible go between, as his views on the Jews are considered in line with our thinking…

– Diary of Joseph Goebbels, February 11 1941

ITALIANS BEATEN!

TREBESHINA, February 18 1941 – After two weeks of fighting, the Greek Army has repelled the Italians from their positions in southern Albania…

…German forces are believed to be building up in Bulgaria and Romania, leading to diplomatic protests from London and the closure of British consulates in those nations…

'SIGNING THEIR OWN DEATH WARRANT;' TRUMP CRITICISES GREECE

WASHINGTON DC, February 21 1941 – The President has sharply rebuffed Athens for refusing German offers to mediate a peace in their war with Italy.

Mr. Trump declared that the Greeks were 'signing their own death warrant,' and that the Axis would 'roll over them…'

"...England is facing it's moment of crisis… even the Americans have abandoned them. They cannot last much longer…" – Adolf Hitler, speech in Munich, February 24 1941.

'REBECCA' WINS ACADEMY AWARD FOR BEST PICTURE

HOLLYWOOD, February 28 1941 – Following his victory with Gone With The Wind in 1940, David O. Selznick has pulled off his second victory in as many years, a first in the history of the 'Oscars…"

…attendees were treated to a radio speech from Mr. Elon Musk, a senior advisor to the President. Mr. Trump apologized for being too busy to deliver the speech himself…

I mean i would recommend talking to Shrink(If one can afford one in this rotten capitalist system) as more helpful than writing dystopia fiction about Trump being Nazi, but whatever helps people.

I mean we've already seen how this would end, it's called Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and every other Nazi total victory timeline ever written.

That or the British and Soviets somehow defeat the Nazis themselves.

Nah, there might be an actual revolution/civil war in the USA. This is a time when the CPUSA wasn't a complete joke and organized labour had yet to be completely defanged of revolutionary potential.

This.

A part of me is regretting clicking here at all. But well-written.

Also, please no.

I think that's about the reaction I was hoping for, to be totally honest.

I mean i would recommend talking to Shrink(If one can afford one in this rotten capitalist system) as more helpful than writing dystopia fiction about Trump being Nazi, but whatever helps people.

Yeah, the affording therapy bit is the problem...

May Satan have mercy on their souls, because God sure didn't.

I think all manners of the divine are keeping out of this one! (Well, except the ASB/ROB responsible for it, I suppose.)

I mean we've already seen how this would end, it's called Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus and every other Nazi total victory timeline ever written.

Ah, Wolfenstein. Ought to reinstall those games, been hankering for a good old Nazi shooter.

As for the latter, stranger things have certainly happened...

Nah, there might be an actual revolution/civil war in the USA. This is a time when the CPUSA wasn't a complete joke and organized labour had yet to be completely defanged of revolutionary potential.
That's a good point, especially once the Nazi invasion of the USSR gets under way. I'm keeping this in mind.

Dictator

Today's war is not a war against Adolf Hitler… it is a struggle between the German nation and humanity. – Theodore N. Kaufman, preamble, Germany Must Perish, published March 1 1941. (Historic document.)

Conversation between Trump, Vance and Lindbergh, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (Mar 3 1941)

LINDBERGH: …Thomsen seems very upset about this book, very upset indeed.

TRUMP: Understandable, understandable.

VANCE: It's tantamount to a call for, uh, a call for genocide.

LINDBERGH: I beg your pardon?

VANCE: [clears throat] Sorry, extermination.

LINDBERGH: Genoc–

VANCE: Look, the point is, w-we can use this, uh, we can blow this up. Um, do we have anyone who can–

LINDBERGH: Coughlin.

VANCE: Charles Coughlin.

LINDBERGH: The NAB took him off the air in '39, but, uh, I've been thinking. Maybe with the right backing, he could, uh, he could come back.

TRUMP: The right backing.

LINDBERGH: Yes, Mr. President. We'd need to take on the NAB and their, uh, code committee before he got back on radio, possibly in the courts, but, uh, maybe a speaking tour could work in the meantime?

TRUMP: And we'd fund this?

LINDBERGH: Uh, no, Mr. President.

[Brief silence.]

LINDBERGH: Not officially.

"And I took a look at Life today, they got this… this weepy French guy in there, and boy, if I could just sock that guy in the face, people… if I could just sock him in the face. If you wanted your country so bad, why didn't you fight for it?" – President Trump, 'radio chat', Mar 4 1941

BUCKINGHAM PALACE BOMBED

LONDON, March 10 1941 – Yesterday, German bombers once against the city of London, scoring a hit on Buckingham Palace – the latest of a number of hits on the Palace since the Blitz began last summer…

HEAVY RAIDS ON MANCHESTER

MANCHESTER, March 12 1941 – Old Trafford Stadium was hit last night, wrecking the stands…

CLYDEBANK HAMMERED BY GERMAN BOMBS

GLASGOW, March 15 1941 – Two nights of successive bombing have left the Scottish town of Clydebank in ruins…

The administration is very displeased at the lopsided coverage of the bombing war. So much has gone to press about German bombings on Britain, yet not a peep on British attacks on the Germans. The President would like to know if there are any options to fix this; perhaps some kind of 'emergency censorship board?' – Memorandum from the President's office to Senate Majority Whip John Barrasso, March 15 1941.

"...everyone's saying, oh, Winston Churchill, he's so brave, he's such a defender of democracy and liberty and… you know what folks? There was meant to be an election last year, last November, and Churchill just told the English people… he just said, 'no.' He said 'no.' 'We can't have an election, there's a war on. We can't have an election.' He just took away all the British liberties, just like that." (snaps fingers.) "Just like that."

"All this stuff about Hitler being this big, awful dictator, but we've got this other dictator over there begging us for money, for money and guns and ships, and Roosevelt was giving him everything he wanted! Everything he wanted, can you believe it folks? Well, now I'm here, and I'm looking Weirdo Winston in the face, and I'm saying… I'm saying we don't give dictators a free ride."

– Donald Trump, White House Correspondents' Dinner, March 15 1941

"How dare he?! How… how bloody dare he?!" – Ernest Bevin (quote in the diary of Clement Attlee), March 16 1941

COUP D'ETAT IN YUGOSLAVIA

BELGRADE, March 27 1941 – There were stunning scenes in the Yugoslav capital to-day as military forces overthrew the regency of Prince Paul, placing the young King Peter in full executive authority over the country…

"The United States does not condone the removal of legitimate government authority by military force. If London is involved, and we believe they are, they should know this – this is not the way to win us over." – Secretary of State Marco Rubio, March 28 1941

"The British Navy is a paper tiger. It lacks the technology and the skill to take on modern naval forces. Trust me, the mentality in the German and Italian navies is infinitely better. You can quote me on it." – Elon Musk, in an interview with the New York Times, March 28 1941

"Please send my report to the Admiralty and my regards to Mr. Musk." – Admiral Sir Andrew Cunningham, following victory at the Battle of Cape Matapan (five Italian ships sunk and two damaged to three British seamen killed and one aircraft shot down), March 29 1941

"Hello America, this is London calling. There was another raid last night, German bombers…

…I have been asked quite often by well-meaning Americans how the morale of this city has been affected by recent remarks and actions by the administration in London. Despite these setbacks, London continues as it has for the last several months, indeed for the last two thousand years. There have been no signs of despair or despondency from the average Londoner. If anything, their resolve has only stiffened.

I have also been asked if the affection towards America in the capital has been diminished. I have been told several times that, no matter what the President says, the warmth many Londoners feel to us still burns brightly. There is still a belief that, no matter what happens in the short term, that America will, in the end, do the right thing, that we are still a fundamentally decent people.

I believe this too. I know that, whatsoever the President might say, you and I and our countrymen are still able to tell good from evil, right from wrong, and will in good time take our own stand, side by side with the people of Britain, against the worst tyranny this world has ever seen.

Until then, all I have to say is… good night and good luck."

– Edward R. Murrow, broadcasting from London, March 31 1941

That or the British and Soviets somehow defeat the Nazis themselves.

There is probably an interesting tl in a fabian British Empire in an uneasy alliance with the Soviet Union to enforce something like the "concert of Europe but antifascist as opposed to pro-monarchist" over the entirety of Eurasia whilst containing an increasingly deranged USA... Though depending on what the members of the antifascist concert are like, that might alarmingly be a more optimistic TL than the current present day where the derangements of the current Trump administration are instead allowed to run riot with far less opposition than the combined might of the USSR and British Empire.

At the rate Trump is burning through diplomatic good will, this is probably the only TL where the British Empire might actually prefer the hard left opposition to the current American administration.

I think Churchill would have to bring out his 'if Hitler invaded Hell' quote to refer to another country. Perhaps 'if Hell overthrew Trump...'

FORD WORKERS STRIKE

DEARBORN, April 2 1941 – Workers at the Ford plant at River Rouge, Michigan, walked out yesterday over the Ford Motor Company's continued refusal to recognise workers' unions. The strike began after Ford laid off eight union workers.

Picketing workers are now blockading the plant, many holding signs comparing Henry Ford and President Trump to the German dictator, Adolf Hitler…

Telephone call between Trump and Henry Ford, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (Apr 3 1941)

FORD: …it's looking like I'll have to give them what they want; I mean, my god, they're smashing cars, they're…

TRUMP: Hold the line, Henry, hold the line, I'll work this out for you.

FORD: I don't- I don't have any bargaining chips, Mr. President. Chrysler, GM, they've all made deals with the damnable unions, what choice do I have?

TRUMP: We're gonna sort this out, Henry, we're gonna sort this out…

TRUMP VOWS TO BREAK STRIKE

WASHINGTON DC, April 4 1941 – Blaming 'actors in the pay of the Soviet Union,' President Trump has authorised the immediate deployment of FBI agents and federalized National Guard units to Dearborn to break the ongoing River Rouge strike…

UNITED AUTO WORKERS DECLARE GENERAL STRIKE IN SUPPORT OF FORD WORKERS

"Good God, he's an idiot! A useful idiot, and one the damn Jews can't pay off, but an idiot all the same!" – Henry Ford, 5 April 1941, according to recollection from Henry Bennett.

GERMAN FORCES INVADE GREECE, YUGOSLAVIA

BELGRADE, April 7 1941 – German armoured forces have crossed the Greek border and attacked the Metaxas Line, whilst Luftwaffe bombers have struck targets across Yugoslavia including the capital of Belgrade. German forces advancing from Bulgaria are also believed to be approaching Skopje.

The attack, launched with the assistance of Italy and Hungary, has been expected for some days, as it was doubtful that the Germans would allow the coup against Prince Paul to go unanswered…

FATHER COUGHLIN BEGINS SPEAKING TOUR IN NEW YORK CITY

NEW YORK CITY, April 7 1941 – It was a gala night for America Firsters as Charles Coughlin began a whirlwind speaking tour with an address at Madison Square Garden.

Father Coughlin, with the financial support of Charles Lindbergh who also briefly spoke, talked of the National Association of Broadcaster's attempts to silence him, blaming their actions on a secretive cabal of Jews, communists and Englishmen attempting to subvert the United States. He announced that, with the support of Mr. Lindbergh, he was taking them to court.

Predicting an 'inevitable' conflict between Germany and Soviet Union, Coughlin implied that it would be better for the United States to back the Germans and destroy Bolshevism once and for all. As for Britain, he said that they had made their bed and that they ought to lie in it…

US ANNOUNCES AGREEMENT TO GARRISON GREENLAND

WASHINGTON DC, April 9 1941 – The United States has signed an agreement to take over the defence of Greenland in exchange for air and naval basing rights…

TOBRUK BESIEGED

ALEXANDRIA, April 10 1941 – Following a lightning advance, the German 'Afrika Korps' under the command of General Erwin Rommel has forced the British back to the port city of Tobruk, which is now encircled and under siege. The stunning reversal of the past two weeks has seen most of the gains made by the British against Italy reversed…

…this comes after continued grim news for the Allies in the Balkans, where the Germans are now in a position to threaten Belgrade.

Conversation between Trump, Vance and Marshall, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (Apr 13 1941)

MARSHALL: …it would seem Belgrade has surrendered. They're telling us that one SS officer managed to do it with six men – evidently he managed to bluff the Mayor into thinking his force was bigger than it actually was.

VANCE: Incredible.

MARSHALL: It also seems they've broken the Metaxas Line; they've taken Thessaloniki and Vivi and are driving south. It's too early to say, but we might be facing another Dunkirk.

VANCE: They. They might be facing another Dunkirk.

MARSHALL: [clearing throat.] My contacts in the British General Staff tell me–

TRUMP: Your contacts?

MARSHALL: Well, sir, I, uh, myself and President Roosevelt believed–

TRUMP: You don't answer to Roosevelt anymore, you answer to me.

MARSHALL: Sir-

TRUMP: You answer to me. You answer to me. Now cut 'em, cut the contacts. I don't want contacts.

MARSHALL: Sir, the information they're giving me could be of national security–

TRUMP: I tell you what, we wouldn't be having this damn conversation if you were one of Hitler's generals. If Rommel were here-

MARSHALL: Sir–

TRUMP: If Rommel were here, he'd do what I say, and he'd do it faster. If Guderian were here, if Rundstedt were here–

MARSHALL: Mr. President, if I–

VANCE: You will shut your mouth when the President is speaking to you.

TRUMP: We've only got two generals even half as good as Hitler's, and they're Patton and MacArthur. Patton and MacArthur. I want you to be more like MacArthur.

[Silence.]

MARSHALL: Mr. President, my contacts have told me that the British Army is facing significant equipment shortfalls. They may lose more if another Dunkirk happens in Greece. I believe it is in America's strategic interest to–

TRUMP: Cut the contacts and don't talk to me about this again. If the British want our stuff, they can pay for it like anyone else.

MARSHALL: They have no cash reserves, sir.

VANCE: That's not our problem, General.

[Long silence.]

TRUMP: You can leave now, General.

[Feet stomp as Marshall leaves.]

"Marshall told me that night that the only thing that stopped him from resigning there and then was the thought of someone like MacArthur replacing him. To be honest, I think his staying at his post only delayed the inevitable." – Col. Dwight D. Eisenhower (ret), interview for The World War, 1965.

PRESS BILL INTRODUCED TO CONGRESS

WASHINGTON DC, April 17 1941 – Citing 'a clear and present threat to drag our nation into war by the use of hostile propaganda,' Representative Matt Gaetz introduced the 'Proportionate Coverage Act' to the House of Representatives.

Democratic Party politicians and free press advocates have cried foul at the text of the bill, which calls for 'equal coverage in text of the actions of both sides of the war.' The example Gaetz provided was that a newspaper reporting on German bombing of British cities must print an equal amount on British bombing of German cities, and that there be no 'sensational' or 'emotive' language that might indicate support for either side of the conflict.

In a rare comment on his successor's activity, former President Roosevelt addressed reporters from Hyde Park, denouncing the proposed law as 'unconstitutional and nakedly fascist…'

Telephone call between Trump and Lindbergh, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (Apr 18 1941)

LINDBERGH: Well, sir, this is a little constitutionally… dicey.

TRUMP: Don't worry about it. We've got the Supreme Court.

LINDBERGH: Doesn't this shoot us in the foot, too? I mean, if we start pushing pro-German articles, that would, uh, that'd 'indicate support' for a side, wouldn't it?

TRUMP: …if it's enforced equally.

LINDBERGH: In any case, this will take time, even if you fast track it as much as I can. I do have a development on our Coughlin plan though…

TRUMP: Hmm?

LINDBERGH: I think we need to start thinking of a paper.

BRITISH COMMANDOS RAID BARDIA

Telephone call between Trump and Elon Musk, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (Apr 19 1941)

TRUMP: …so these commandos basically go in and cut people's throats in the rear. Like, do real bad stuff.

MUSK: Well, that's not exactly what they're doing… but we can make people think they are.

TRUMP: And it'll turn people off the war.

MUSK: Don't worry about it, Mr. President. Lindbergh's people know what to do.

REX STOUT BLASTS LINDBERGH IN NEW YORK

NEW YORK CITY, April 21 1941 – Novelist Rex Stout took aim at Charles Lindbergh today… Stout was firm in his convictions, stating; 'A desperate war is being fought, and the winners of the war will win the oceans. No matter what we do, we shall be either one of the winners, or one of the losers… It would therefore seem to be plain imbecility not to go in with Britain and win."

"...this Rex Stout guy, trying to talk to us about foreign policy. What does he do? He writes these… detective novels. He writes detective novels. He writes about this fat guy, his name's Nero, and he solves crimes. Are we really gonna let a dime store novel hack tell us what wars we should be fighting? He's sick, folks, he's sick in the head…" – – President Trump, 'radio chat', Apr 22 1941

GALLOP POLL INDICATES 53% OF AMERICANS WOULD SUPPORT ARMED CONVOYS TO BRITAIN

"...and how's this bad news, Franklin? The majority still support…"

"The average is trending downwards, Harry. In January 60% of Americans were in favour of supporting Britain."

"I mean, it could just be a desire to keep our armed forces out…"

"There was another poll two weeks ago, just on helping England. 54% said yes."

"So that means…"

"Trump has been changing public opinion."

"Dear God…"

"America Daily, a brand new, honest and objective newspaper, will launch next week with my backing. Alongside patriots like Father Coughlin, they will bring a much needed counterbalance to the constant pro-British drivel published in the Jewish-run mainstream press…" – Charles Lindbergh, speaking to reporters in New York City, April 30 1941.

Here it comes. With the USSR entering the war, this does beg the question about British-Soviet co-operation in light of America being worse than useless. I suspect the British might be able to push back in North Africa (Rommel was a guy who thought logistics were a suggestion after all) but I don't think they'll be able to pull D-Day or the invasion of Italy without America and it's essentially magical logistics, which given Stalin's push for a second front in Europe isn't going to please him.

... I think this is a recipe for Commonwealth troops being on the Eastern Front. The BBC is gonna be getting wall to wall stories of the horrors unleashed by the Eisatzgruppen.

I don't know if this is a healthy coping mechanism but it sure is a creative one. I'm mainly here to see what meltdown trump has after Pearl Harbor.

Has the Republic voter base been retroactively brainwashed to accept the general MAGA Cult insanity as a side effect of nobody questioning Trump winning or are they going to quickly think that "their" president has gone insane?

Bismark traveled to the north sea In may historically and got sunk in less than a week of operation so that will be interesting to see how they react. especially with trump hyping up the German navy.

Ah, Rommel. If there ever was a general more overrated. I think you're right on both accounts, Africa was always a losing proposition for the Axis, but Italy and France are pretty much off the table. The Eastern Front could be a possibility. I'm trying to envision sending the 9th Australian or 3rd Canadian Divisions into Stalingrad, and it's hard to picture in my mind. (Arguably still a better idea than Dieppe though.)

(All this presupposes that the USSR will still be in the war come 1942, of course...)

There's a strange catharsis to it. Gives me that feeling that it could always be worse.

I'd say the same amount of the GOP base that is big on MAGA now are big on America First here, give or take a little. That doesn't mean Trump can do absolutely anything and get away with it though, as the auto strike is hopefully proving. That's where propaganda comes in...

We'll be getting into Bismarck, I assure you.

Is this Trump first or second term in this timeline (Oh god is he going to win multiple terms...)?
Second term, pretty much as he was on inauguration day in January.

What about Indian divisions? With no America, the Empire would probably be leaning harder on bringing in help from the colonies.

Free Speech is Back

Conversation between Trump, Vance and Marshall, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (May 2 1941)

TRUMP: …have you heard of this march they've had in Moscow? So many tanks, so many men… we need an army like that. We need parades like that.

MARSHALL: I'm not certain such a parade would go down well in America.

VANCE: We didn't ask you here to criticize–

MARSHALL: [heavy sigh] Of course, Mr. Vice-President, on to the topic at hand.

[Paper rustling]

MARSHALL: Our M2 medium program is proceeding reasonably well, but events have made it clear that it's not gonna cut it on a modern battlefield. We've got our first M3s coming off the production line, but–

TRUMP: Beautiful tanks, beautiful. They've got two guns, don't they?

MARSHALL: Yes sir, but there's concerns that they may not be– um, they're too tall, sir, and the gun can't be used when it's hull down…

TRUMP: What's hull down?

MARSHALL: Dug in, basically, or holding a position behind a ridge.

TRUMP: No, no, that's not a problem. Tanks move, right? Tanks move. They don't need to be 'hull down.'

MARSHALL: It's also too tall, and…

VANCE: Is there another option?

MARSHALL: Here. This is the T6 design. We think it'll be a massive improvement.

[Paper rustling.]

TRUMP: [whispering] Sherman?

VANCE: [whispering] Yeah.

TRUMP: [whispering] Didn't those things–

VANCE: [whispering] 'Light first time.'

MARSHALL: Sir?

TRUMP: Can it. I want more M3s.

MARSHALL: Sir?!

TRUMP: It's got two guns. Two beautiful guns. And what's this other design here? T1?

MARSHALL: Um, that's a heavy tank, sir. I really think you should reconsider–

TRUMP: Heavies. Big, beautiful heavies. That's what we need. Build those too. Top priority.

VANCE: We can call 'em Trumps. The Trump Tank.

TRUMP: The Trump Tank, I like it.

MARSHALL: Sir, I have to protest, the T6 design is our best option. The M3 can work as a stopgap until we have it in production, but–

VANCE: That's enough, General.

MARSHALL: No it is not!

[long silence.]

MARSHALL: You are the commander in chief and your word is final. But I am telling you, these recommendations have been made by experts. If you ignore them, you are going to get our fighting men killed. You–

TRUMP: You're fired.

MARSHALL: Excuse me?!

TRUMP: You're fired, get out.

MARSHALL: …very well. But I stand by everything I said–

VANCE: Get out.

MARSHALL: –and I hope to God that my replacement will make you see–

VANCE: Out!

[Clicking of heels as Marshall salutes, then footsteps and the sound of a door slamming.]

VANCE: So… [sigh] who're we getting?

TRUMP: I know exactly who I want.

HITLER PRAISES PRESIDENT, EXPRESSES INTEREST IN MEETING

BERLIN, May 4 1941 – There were stunning scenes in the Reichstag today as the German Fuhrer proclaimed his respect and admiration towards President Trump, praising his pivot from the 'dangerous and warlike' policy of his predecessor. While stopping short of extending an invitation to the President, he expressed his interest in meeting face to face.

In his review of the Balkan campaign, commenced after a British-backed coup in Yugoslavia that left his southern flank under threat, Hitler proclaimed that the German Army and its allies were clearly superior in tactics, equipment and morale to any of their opponents… [published in America Daily]

HOUSES OF PARLIAMENT HIT IN MASSIVE GERMAN RAID

LONDON, May 10 1941 – The Luftwaffe has hit London in one of its heaviest raids so far, with a direct hit on the House of Commons…

CHURCHILL'S OBSTINACY KILLS THOUSANDS

LONDON, May 10 1941 – On the first anniversary of his ascension to power, Winston Churchill's stubborn refusal to end a war he cannot win has now cost the lives of tens of thousands of his countrymen. Indeed, the destruction of the House of Commons, where democratic elections were cancelled last year, is perhaps the most apt symbolic proof of the preventable ruin into which he has led once-mighty Britain into… [opinion piece in America Daily]

HESS FOUND IN SCOTLAND

Conversation between Vance, Musk and Ambassador Hans Thomsen, secretly recorded on order of Director Hoover (May 12 1941)

VANCE: What did he think he was doing?

THOMSEN: We do not rightly know, Herr Vance. He must have gone insane. Perhaps some kind of nervous breakdown. The Fuhrer is furious, of course.

MUSK: Rightly so.

THOMSEN: Hess has no authority to negotiate on our behalf. We believe that if a peacemaker were to emerge between ourselves and the English, there would be perhaps nobody better suited to mediate it than President Trump.

VANCE: Mm-hmm. We should arrange something.

THOMSEN: The biggest obstacle, of course, would be Churchill. [clears throat] In any case, my government has been wondering; have you made any diplomatic overture towards Japan?

VANCE: Japan? Well, the big problem there is the China Lobby. They've got money to throw around, you know – and MacArthur, our new Army Chief of Staff, he's in with them.

THOMSEN: I see.

MUSK: We don't want to fight a war if we don't have to. Not with Japan at any rate. Besides, the Nips buy our oil, the Chinks don't.

VANCE: [audibly uncomfortable] Yeah, that's, uh, true.

MUSK: Look, we should be getting the President to think more on this. I'll talk to him, maybe we can get some sort of arrangement going… actually, I've got a few ideas to mention to him, get a load of this one…

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby ordered;

There is hereby established the Office of Censorship, at the head of which shall be a Director of Censorship. The Director of Censorship shall cause to be censored, in his absolute discretion, communications by mail, cable, radio, or other means of transmission passing between the United States and any foreign country…

– Executive Order, May 18 1941

"We need to stop all these bad actors, like Evil Ed Murrow, from spreading their propaganda throughout this great country, and I can think of no better person to head our new censorship office than that great patriot, that real great patriot, Elon Musk…" – Donald Trump, press conference, May 18 1941

"Well, he can't censor internal communications, so here's one for you, gentlemen – Donald Trump is the most egotistical, most insecure and most incompetent President in the history of our nation." – actor Jimmy Stewart, May 18 1941

PARACHUTISTS LAND ON CRETE

MALEME, May 20 1941 – It was a bloody day for the German paratroopers as they met fierce resistance from British Empire and Greek forces on the island of Crete. Reports are confused at this time, but I have seen heavy fighting around Maleme and have heard reports of landings near Rethymno, apparently aimed at capturing airfields.

This reporter, who has been embedded amongst New Zealand troops, can report that the Allies are in high spirits, having extracted a significant toll against the Nazi forces. Clusters of enemy troops have managed to gather, however, and there is heavy fighting on the hills overlooking the Maleme airfield. I have seen Cretan peasants marching once proud parachutists away with pitchforks and shotguns…

BRITISH SHIPS SUNK OF CRETE

HERAKLION, May 23 1941 – Two more destroyers have been sunk in Britain's ill-fated defence of Crete, as Australian and New Zealand forces continue an impotent fight against the elite German paratroopers… [published in America Daily]

HOOD SUNK

"The best ship in their fleet, and it's sunk in it's first ever battle? That's sad. That's just sad. Just pathetic sailing all round, folks. Pathetic sailing. John Paul Jones, he would roll in his grave." – President Trump, 'radio chat', May 25 1941

209 SQUADRON REPORTS NO SIGHTING OF BISMARCK STOP

War Cabinet Meeting, May 27 1941

DILL: General Wavell has informed us that Crete is no longer tenable. The chiefs of the armed services are in agreement; we're going to need to evacuate.

CHURCHILL: …our last foothold in Greece. [heavy sigh] And what of Bismarck?

DILL: There has been no sign of her. She could be halfway to Brest by now.

EDEN: Good god. The pride of our fleet sunk and nothing to show for it.

WOOD: Our monetary reserves are running out, Winston. We'll be out of gold by the end of the year, and that's after liquidating just about everything.

CHURCHILL: We must go on. How long can the armed services fight?

DILL: As long as we must, sir, but…

CHURCHILL: Go on.

DILL: We cannot win this war without American support.

[Long pause.]

CHURCHILL: Then we must go to the lion's den. Arrange a meeting. I will speak to the President in person.

EDEN: Winston, he'll never…

CHURCHILL: It is our only chance. I must try.

WOOD: And if he continues to refuse?

CHURCHILL: …I proposed that we would not end this war until each of us lies choking on our own blood. My opinion on this matter has not changed.

BISMARCK ARRIVES IN BREST

BREST, May 29 1941 – It was with no shortage of relief that the mighty Bismarck docked in Brest, having valiantly escaped the clutches of the British Navy after sinking their finest battleship, HMS Hood… [published in America Daily]

"I had a wonderful meeting with Kichisaburō Nomura today, a really wonderful, beautiful meeting… if you're worried about the Far East, don't worry anymore. I think we're getting everything sorted out…" – President Trump, 'radio chat', May 30 1941

AN: So this is my first big butterfly as to the actual progress of the war. I'll admit it's a bit of a stretch, but Bismarck was spotted on its way back to Brest by a US Navy Reserve crewman on loan to 209 Squadron RAF, helping them get used to using Catalinas. In this timeline, he's not there (and neither are the Catalinas, for that matter.) I'm aware that it's most likely the RN and RAF would still probably catch Bismarck, but I thought this would be an interesting way to highlight a lesser known US contribution to the British war effort.

It hurt to do though. The favourite Wehraboo ship being sunk by a squadron of old biplanes and a weird looking battleship with torpedoes is one of my favourite historical things, and it lose it is hard.

So far i noticed you have really touched on racism, like if Trump is going nazi POC are really going to have bad time, are you gonna skip over as something you dont want to cover, even as you cover the fascism stuff ? that or is trump power still too shaky for this @E350 i do think segregationists would get a boost by Trump.

MUSK: We don't want to fight a war if we don't have to. Not with Japan at any rate

Dear God I hadn't even thought about the war in Asia. Okay, good news is that whilst I could see Japan successfully making it to Bengal/Bangladesh, I get the feeling that they'd have their army smashed upon arrival. The go to Japanese strategy in Asia was the army acting on its own initiative to seize territory they didn't any ability to administer, meaning that by the time they reach Australia, India or even most of the Soviet East they'd be absurdly overstretched. Bad news... God it's gonna suck to live in China.
