My name is Peter Parker. Though I'm far more widely known as Spider-Man. This isn't my story. My story is much longer than this, but it is part of my story. And that of many others. To understand this story you'll need a bit of background.

First you should know why I'm called Spider-Man. I was a high school student and was on a field trip to Oscorp Labs. While I was there I was bitten by a spider, this spider was...

[ ] Radioactive(Comic book Spider-Man. Gives speed, strength, agility, durability, regeneration, wall-climbing and danger-sense as well as making his body peak physical condition. Peter made his own web-shooters, which lets him alter them as needed for a variety of effects, but at the cost of needing to refill the fluid.)

[ ] Genetically altered(Spider-Man live action film, the first ones not Amazing Spider-Man. As above, but Peter's webbing is organic, so doesn't run out, but cannot be altered beyond the base webbing uses.)

This isn't what began my life as Spider-Man. No, that was the night that...

[ ] Uncle Ben died.(+1 Twist of Fate, ToF will be explained in a post about mechanics)

[ ] Uncle Ben almost died, but I managed to save him from the man who was going to shoot him.(+1 Parker Luck, PL will be explained in a post about mechanics)

After that night I did my best to live up to something Uncle Ben once said to me; With great power comes great responsibility.

From there my life as a superhero was underway. But one event that stands out above all the others is...

[ ] The death of Gwen Stacy.(+1 Twist of Fate, She believed in Heroes, and I refuse to disappoint her.)

[ ] The Advent of Venom.(+1 Twist of Fate, My dark mirror, I can never seem to escape it.)

There were ups and downs, highs and lows. But life was normal. Well, normal for a superhero, anyway. What with supervillains, fights for survival, saving people from burning buildings, and trying to find a job.

Then I was approached by Dr. Steven Strange. The Sorcerer Supreme. He told me that there was a threat, not just to this world, but to all worlds. Apocalypse on a grand scale. And apparently I am the one who needs to stop it.

(Pick one)

[ ] And me alone(+2 Twist of Fate, basic Spidey, no extras.)

[ ] But he'll be providing me some help in the form of...(pick one suboption, along with a single subsuboption if the ring is chosen.)
-[ ] A green ring and lantern from some other world... (-1 Twist of Fate)
--[ ] But I won't be able to use it, though I can give it to someone worthy. (+1 Parker Luck)
--[ ] That I can use. (+2 Parker Luck)
-[ ] Something about the ability to 'trigger', though he was somewhat vague on that. (-1 Twist of Fate)
-[ ] A bank account with funds from all over the many worlds that slipped through the cracks. (-1 Twist of Fate, +1 Parker Luck)

And then he asked if I wanted to go. Like that's a choice. He said that I could stop it, and save lives, then asked if I wanted to. I have a responsibility to do this.

So he opened a portal, and I stepped through, blacking out immediately. When I woke I...

[ ] Was 15 again. Still Spider-Man, but 15 years old.

[ ] Was the same age I was when I walked through, 20 years old.

And looking at the world around me showed

[ ] A calender with the date January 18th, 2011. (Day Taylor triggers)

[ ] A world on fire, with an angry roaring sounding. (During Taylor's fight with Lung)

[ ] In the middle of a bank, which was being robbed. (During the Undersider's bank robbery)

The worlds are ending. And I have two years to stop it.

After a few minutes to adjust to my new surroundings I stood and took stock of myself instead. Peter Parker. Twenty years old, check. Dressed in normal civilian clothes, check. Comforting feel of costume under clothes, check. A bag containing the items Dr. Strange promised, check. Speaking of...

I swung my backpack off of my shoulder and unzipped it, taking a look inside. A change of clothes and spare costume... Thank you Sorcerer Supreme. And... An odd looking lantern, glowing green, with a ring atop it. Huh. I took the ring out and studied it, finding it largely unremarkable. Just a green ring of some sort of metal with a light under an odd symbol on it. Another glance at the lantern in the bag showed a note attached.

Spider-Man,

This ring is from another world full of superheroes. I am not certain what it's powers are in full. I do know that it has a reserve of power, that must be recharged from the lantern that accompanied it, and that it's effects are fueled by willpower. The greater the will of the wearer, the more powerful the ring's effects are. While someone of weak will could maybe make a single brick, someone strong of will could create a wall.

"Sooo... It's a ring that harnesses the amazing power of stubbornness. Good to know." Shaking my head I stowed the ring back in the bag with the lantern before closing the bag up and slipping out of the alley I'd been in. The Sorcerer Supreme had said I would end up in some place called Brockton Bay. Or as Obi-Wan says, a 'hive of scum and villainy'. Sounds like home.

But the good Doctor was a bit sparse on details as to when I would arrive. So as I wandered down the streets I kept my eyes peeled for a calendar or bank sign showing the date. I couldn't find one. So instead I made my way to an internet cafe I'd spotted in my wandering. Fishing some cash out of my thin wallet I bought a bit of time on a computer. Then I sat down and first checked the date. January 18th, 2011.

Now Dr. Strange didn't give me a whole lot of information about how the worlds were going to end. He didn't even tell me what the main threat was, as his magics apparently had issues discerning that. Just that it was there and very real. But he did fill me in on a few key points. The first is that a young woman named Taylor Hebert was going to have something happen to her on this day to cause her to gain powers. I even knew where, roughly. In theory. Maybe a map wouldn't be amiss.

It was still early morning by that point, and her issue didn't occur until later in the day. So I had time to research this world a bit, learning about the Protectorate and the PRT, which really reminded me of S.H.I.E.L.D and the Avengers, and about Brockton Bay in general. It really is a hive of scum and villainy.

As I neared running out of time I found and memorized a street map of Brockton Bay, specifically routes to Winslow High School, and the place they call the Rig. Then I set out to...

[ ] Go help Taylor, requires write-in of explanation as to why Peter went there. Taylor still triggers.

[ ] From what Dr. Strange said she survives, and you have more pressing things to do. Like go to this Protectorate and see about getting a job and housing with them.

The Locker
I shook my head to clear my thoughts. Of course I was going to go help her! I would have liked some help when I was bitten. Sure, I wasn't blasted by radiation or anything, but it still wasn't entirely pleasant. Besides, if I just let her be what would Uncle Ben think? What would Gwen think?

I made my way to the school, not encountering any trouble along the way. Not sure how I pulled that off. From what I read online this city is a bit of a hotbed for gang activity. But I got there, though it was well after school let out and all the after school clubs and activities had ended. I wasn't sure why she'd still be here at this time, but from what Dr. Strange said, she would be.

Now, Peter Parker had no reason at all to be wandering around a school after it had let out. But Spider-Man? Spider-Man could be investigating a disturbance or tip.

So I ducked down a nearby alley and stashed my bag, quickly stripping off my clothes, leaving me in my costume, completed with me tugging my mask on. I've tried a lot of costumes, but you just can't go wrong with the classic red and blue. I slipped out of the alley by way of going up the wall to the roof, then jumping along rooftops until you're back at the school. Rather than try any of the doors, after the roof access and finding it locked, I climbed down a wall and slipped in through an open window.

I wasn't sure where in the school I should be looking, so I started to simply poke around, sneaking through and finding my way around. Classrooms on the second floor, empty... Class rooms on the first floor empty. And that's when it happened. I caught wend of an atrocious smell coming from one of the halls. Fortunately I could handle the smell well enough, letting me make my way down the hall, lockers to either side. The smell seemed to be originating from one of the lockers in particular, along with noises, whimpering. This... No.

Two quick shots of webbing, gave me tethers attached to the top of the locker door. A tug on those tethers caused top of the locker door to peel down, letting me move in to grab the thin metal, and rip it away, throwing it across the hall and resulting in a loud clanging noise as it struck the lockers on the opposite wall. Once the locker was opened various bits of filth came tumbling out, along with a young girl, tall and lanky with wavy brunette hair. Taking advantage of my reflexes I was able to catch her sobbing form.

"It's going to be okay. You're going to be okay." I gathered her up in my arms and stood straight, catching sight of the janitor, likely drawn by the noise the locker door made as it struck the wall. For a few minutes we were both silent, staring at each other. Breaking the silence I spoke up, "I would love to stay and chat, maybe find out how a student ended up stuffed in a locker, but I need to get her to a hospital. You should get the police here to investigate that."

I made my way out of the school, only pausing on my way to the hospital long enough to grab my bag. Then I was swinging along on the way to the hospital. You'd think that in a city full of superheroes there would be less stopping to stare at a guy in a costume swinging along. But you'd think wrong.

None the less, once I was there I made my way in through the emergency room entrance, still carrying the girl. Making my way to the desk I spoke up, "There was a disturbance at Winslow High School. When I got there I found this girl trapped in a locker filled with biological waste."

Little time is wasted as she's quickly gathered up, and the nurses tried to get me to fill out paperwork, answer some questions, and stick around for the local authorities. I...

[ ] Did so. I wanted to be around when the girl woke up anyway, and it could be a good way to get to know the locals.

[ ] Got out of there. Me and authority don't tend to see eye to eye.

Miss Militia
I decided to stick around. I may not always get along with authority figures, but this wasn't my world. Things could be different here.

... Maybe. It's possible.

I stuck around anyway. And eventually the boys in blue showed up, along with a woman with darker skin, black hair, and wearing fatigues with a flag patterned bandanna covering the lower half of her face and a knife sheathed on one leg. Upon spotting me the woman steped forward, holding out a hand.

"Hello, these are Officers Jackson and Peters. And I'm Miss Militia. I understand you're the one who brought in Miss Hebert?"

"Call me Spider-Man. And yes, though I was unsure of her name until you mentioned it. I was in the area and found that she was stuffed in a locker filled with... Waste. So I got her out and brought her here. I'm afraid I don't know much about the circumstances behind it."

Miss Militia nods her head slightly and lifts a hand, gesturing down the hall, motioning for me to accompany her.

"The police will be getting a statement from her when she's awake. Normally they'd be handling everything, but the involvement of a parahuman, even if just in bringing her here, means the PRT and Protectorate need to be involved as well. I've not heard of a Spider-Man before. Are you new, or...?"

As I followed along I moved my shoulders in a small shrug. "New to the area. Today was my first outing here in Brockton Bay. I was mostly just trying to get an idea of the lay of the land, learn my way around a bit. That sort of thing. But when I came across her in a locker... Well, what kind of hero would I be if I just left her there?"

A slight crinkling at the corners of the woman's eyes are enough to indicate she's smiling. "Not as good of one. Can you think of anything that may help us figure out what happened with the poor girl?"

By this point we were outside the room that the girl, Hebert, had been placed in. Though she was currently out of it, with an IV hooked up and with her wounds bandaged.

"I don't... Wait. The... The waste. The smell and appearance of it indicated it had been in there a while before she was forced in with it. So whoever did it had to either have her combination, or some other way of getting it in there."

Miss Militia sighed and shook her head slightly. "I wish I could say that imagining human beings doing that were impossible." She fell silent for a few minutes before turning her attention back to me. "Anyway. We, and I'm sure the young lady, are thankful for your actions. What are your plans now?"

After a few minutes I replied, "I think I'll be sticking around here until she wakes up. Speak with her a bit. After that..."

Here Miss Militia interrupted me, "After that, why don't you come by the Protectorate? I'm sure that there will be those who want to meet you. And we're always glad to help new heroes."

"... I'll think about it."

Miss Militia didn't look entirely happy with that response but she nodded her head, handing me a business card with her name and a phone number on it before she left.

The police asked me a few more questions before leaving to carry on investigations elsewhere, and I went into the room Taylor was in, and settled down in a chair to wait.

Some time had passed, though I wasn't entirely sure how much, when a tall, skinny man with dark hair entered the room. He starts to rush toward the bed that Taylor was on before catching sigh of me, stopping and staring a few minutes. Before the silence could get awkward I stood up and held out a hand.

"Hi there! I'm Spider-Man. And judging from your reaction I'm guessing you're miss Hebert's father?"

"Ah... Y-yes," the man replied, reaching out to take my hand. "Danny. I came as soon as..." His eyes flicked toward his daughter before he continued. "If I find out who did this, I..." He trails off, and his anger manifested as him squeezing my hand tighter and tighter until he realized what he was doing. "Oh! Sorry. I just... The thought of what she went through..."

I held up my hands and shook my head. "Hey! No harm no foul! And I can understand your anger. Most good people aren't able to handle this sort of situation calmly."

I was going to keep talking, but Taylor chose that moment to start stirring, causing both of us to look toward her, waiting for her to wake.

Though her screaming and shouts of 'Too much!' were rather unexpected.

I...

[ ] Did what I could to help her father get her calmed down. This could be a result of those powers she was supposed to gain.

[ ] Powers or not I wasn't entirely sure what I could do to help her calm down, so I left that to her father and medical professionals.

Waking Up
Both Danny and I ended up staring, though not even for a full second. I've superhuman reaction times and speed, and was by the panicking girl's bed in seconds. Danny beat me there.

"Hey, it's okay. It's okay, I'm here. You're safe."

Danny didn't quite seem to know what to do, opting to just take one of Taylor's hands in his as he spoke to her. I wasn't entirely sure either, but I had some ideas. I'd heard of people with enhanced senses having trouble filtering it all at first, and that's what this was looking like to me.

"Mr. Hebert. I've an idea as to what's happening. I think your daughter got powers, and isn't sure how to handle them yet. You just keep doing what you're doing. I'm going to try talking to her."

I leaned down and started to speak to the girl in an even tone.

"Taylor. I know it might be a bit difficult, but I need you to listen. You need to try and focus. It doesn't matter on what right now, just on something. The sound of your father's voice, maybe. Or if that's causing issues with your hearing then the feel of his hand on yours. Just something here, nearby."

Taylor did manage to calm down some as I spoke, though she was still flinching at things that we couldn't see and hear. But after a few minutes of the sound of her father's voice and, I like to think, my coaching her to focus on something specific in this room, she manged to calm down, lying still on the bed save for her head, turning this way and that with her eyes still closed. Her head turned toward the door, a puzzled expression crossing her features. And then all three of us in the room jumped as the door burst open, a doctor hurrying in.

"We... What's going on? We'd gotten some alert readings on the monitor so I was coming to check up on things."

I motioned for Danny to stay where he is, not that he was showing any signs of moving, and made my way toward the doctor. "She just woke up and freaked out a little, is all. Now, I know you'll want to poke and prod like a little grey alien going through probing withdrawals, but I think that it can wait just a bit while the father and daughter talk."

As I spoke I'd gently shuffled him toward, then out the door, shutting it behind him. While ignoring the snickering behind me at my choice of words. That done I turned around and faced the bed, sighing. "Much as I would love to let the two of you have family time they won't be put off for long. And then the police will want to come in and get Taylor's statement, and I need to talk to you before that."

I made my way over and stood beside the bed. "My name is Spider-Man. Hyphen between the Spider and Man. Very important that. And so many people forget it." I sighed and shook my head before growing serious again. "Anyway. Taylor. As I'm sure you've figured out by this point, you've gotten powers. I'm not going to ask what they are. That is yours to tell or not to tell. Though if you want help with them, I'll do what I can. Bit of an old hand at this. Though getting in touch for that could be tricky. I don't have a phone number yet. Or an address. Really new to the area."

I shook my head before looking back toward the two of them. "Doesn't matter. Just wanted to let you two know that this is something you'll have to figure out. What to tell the police, if you want to tell the... the Protectorate. That sort of thing. And it's really something you should figure out together. Trust me. Hiding things may make being a hero easier. But it's hell on your family and social life."

I made my way over toward a table in the room with a notepad and pen on it, pulling out the card I was given and writing the information on it down before tearing the paper off to hand to Danny.

"Since getting in touch with me may prove difficult, that is Miss Militia's information. She seemed to have a level head on her shoulders, so could probably help as well.

And with that, before they can even thank me I...

[ ] Left out the window. Because doors are for chumps.
-[ ] To find a place to stay
-[ ] To stop street crimes
-[ ] To go to the Protectorate

[ ] Left out the door. It's a hospital!
-[ ] To find a place to stay
-[ ] To stop street crimes
-[ ] To go to the Protectorate

[ ] Stuck around in case I was needed.

Enter Panacea
I simply moved toward the door, opening it up and saying to the police and doctors outside. "She's ready to see you all now." Then I moved further into the room, leaning against a wall. The doctors come in then and do some check ups on Taylor, finding nothing they hadn't found before. Then the police come in and start asking questions.

They don't get much from her before leaving. Just when it happened, how long she was in there, if she saw who did it.

"I didn't see them do it, I was facing my locker. So it'll be just like other the other times I've tried reporting what they've done. Them against me with nobody else willing to say anything."

The officers didn't look very pleased about that statement, but they don't argue it. And Danny looked incredibly angry before he was able to get control of himself with a few deep breaths.

Danny and Taylor spent a bit of time talking to each other before looking toward me again. "So. Why are you still here? Not that I'm complaining or anything!"

I looked toward the two of them before laughing softly. "Ah. Well, I'm thinking a couple things through. Considering if I want to head into the Protectorate building tomorrow, or wait until Taylor there is well enough to go with me. So she has a familiar face around. Well... Familiar mask, anyway. Not sure if I'll be joining up with them, but I might as well hear what they have to say and offer. I'm going to need some way of getting a place anyway..."

Danny chuckled softly at that, shaking his head slightly. "You really are new around here, aren't you?" You have no idea, Danny-boy... "If you'd like I can talk to a few people, and see about finding a place for you."

Taylor interrupted here. "Or he could stay with us! We have a spare room. And he could help with... What's going on with me." She trailed off after that last, which seemed to have made Danny look a little less opposed to the idea on principle.

Though not enough to stop him from arguing against the idea. Not that he gets far before the door to the room is quickly opening and closing. When I looked over, along with Danny and Taylor, I saw a young woman wearing a hooded white robe with a red cross on it. She doesn't seem to have noticed us, as she was standing there, leaning against the door and rubbing her face.

"You alright there, miss?" When I asked that she gave a start, quickly looking up, eyes wide. Something that only contributed to the mousy look of the girl.

"S-Sorry! I was just-I didn't mean to interrupt!"

Taylor and Danny whisper to each other as I moved toward the girl, holding up a hand. "No need to worry about that! I'm Spider-Man."

The girl shakes her head and replies, "Panacea. I was just trying to hide from my sister."

I raised an eyebrow at that, not that she could tell. "And why would you need to do that?"

"Because she's going to take me home, and there's more I need to do here! People who need healing!"

Whatever else was going to be added was interrupted by a pounding on the door. "Amy! You in there? You've worked all your hours for the day!" One which caused the mousy girl to look a bit panicked. I...

[ ] Hid the girl. Helping people is a good thing.

[ ] Called out to let the sister know she was in here. There must be some reason for her only working so many hours.
