You look around, trying to locate the sound from a single tree as the clapping continues. From the pace of the claps, you can tell that they are somewhat slow for a reason, as if the display of it is merely a mocking gesture from the uninvited guests. That must mean that they think so little of you and the trainees, that means that whoever it is far surpasses all of you, or is just too overconfident.
If it's the latter case, then it's great, meaning that if all of you gang up on them. However, if the former is the case, then there is nothing that you can do if they show themselves. You'd be completely screwed in that situation.
"Bravo, bravo. Killing a bunch of trees and zombies. Truly the next greatest batch of future knights. I can feel a tear coming down on my cheek." you hear a young man's voice, one that is high-pitched and youthful. You can hear the mocking remarks coming from one of the tree that are now to the right (as they were to your left when your back was turned) and the voice echoing across the entire area. You notice that Hayashida and Mae sneer and growl respectively as they also seem to search for the voice.
"In fact, you are so good that you dragged in a civilian to help you solve your problems. That's a golden star to each and every one of you. Total excellence across the board. Maybe I chance the gold star in to a black star for that little swordsman over there." he continues to mock the trainees, not really paying you any attention at the moment and sticking to insulting them.
Good, that will give you time to analyze his behavior and see what kind of a person he is and figure out a plan.
At this point the Akira seems to have lost her cool and steps forward, a fist raised above her head. "Hey, who do you think you are?! Do you think you can just talk about us like that?! We're going to kick your sorry butt once we find you!" she screamed out loud, challenging the guy to come out.
It's then that Mae steps forward. "Yeah, for once I agree with the bookhead. Come out here and get kicked to kingdom come, jackass!" she shouts as she seconds her fellow trainee's challenge deceleration, with Ito cowardly clinging to his rifle and Hayashida gripping the handle of his longsword with a barely audible growl but with an angry expression on his face.
You then hear a sudden "VROOSH!" sound as you see leaves rustle on one tree to your right and then on three to your left. "Sorry, no can do. The fun would end too early if I just go down there, don'tcha think?" he asks as you now hear him from your left instead of your right. Were the rustling the result of his movements?
Shit, he is fast. You don't think that any of them can hit someone that fast. It's just as you feared, he is beyond all of the trainees. He is playing with them and mocking them because he is much more powerful. He's some sort of bully who clings to those weaker than him and uses his words instead of his fists. This means that he is also somewhat intelligence.
It's then that Ito raises his rifle and aims at one of the trees, completely stressed and unsure of himself. "Um, guys...shouldn't we, you know, not get into another fight?" he questions the others as you look at everyone there. You can tell that Arakawa is also apprehensive about this and you know that their stock of potions is limited. You do believe that Ito is right about this one.
Immediately the two girls turn on him angrily. "Shut it! I want to kick his ass for insulting us like that!" the Werewolf declares angrily as she glares at the teen.
"Yeah, you idiot! As future Knights of Order we need to defend the organization's honor and he is just asking for a fight!" the Werecat then joins in, seemingly in agreement with the other trainee in getting into a fight, although her reasons seem to be different. Not that it matters.
"Aw, isn't that sweet." the voice says mockingly yet again as you listen in to the words, the way he speaks and the tone that he uses. You need to study him, to see what's possible in this situation and what's not. "The kitty and the puppy and getting along. Truly a lovely sign from those old "end of days" way back when." he keeps talking and you notice that the kind of insults that he uses are childish and immature. It's possible that he is trying to figure out how easy it is to entice the two Were-girls.
"What did you just call me?!" the two girls roar in unison as they are filled with fiery anger burning through their minds. It's easy enough to tell that, and it's not good. It gives more info to the enemy about them, about their mindset and how easy it is to get them off their game.
"Shut it, brats." Hayashida says as he steps forward with a cold fury plastered all over his face, which shows that he's in no better form than the two girls. He unsheathes his swords and points it forward, his eyes looking to the left. "Come out here," he says calling to the voice. "so that I can cut your fucking head off and see your corpse getting soaked in its own blood." he threatens with a chillingly cold tone to his voice while you roll your eyes.
"Hm..." you hear a playful echo of thought. It doesn't seem like he is actually hesitating, but to him this seems like cutting his game short, if he does see them as playthings for his amusement. "Sure, why not?" the voice echoes as there is another "VROOSH!" sound. With a powerful gust of air that forces you to cover your face for a few moments, a figure appears.
The young man doesn't even seem to be that much taller than Akira. He has an olive-tan to his skin and a messy red hair, a pair of crimson-red eyes and a devilish smug grin that oozes with confidence from his entire frame. He doesn't seem very muscular, but looks can always be deceiving. He is wearing a pair of blue jeans and a green short-sleeved shirt. The shoes that he wears also looks torn and worn out.
"Here I am." he says with a playful and jovial tone his voice as he keeps his smug grin. He really is that confident. "So how are we gonna do?" he asks them almost tauntingly.
Hayashida simply enters a stance, his sword next to his head, preparing to launch forward. "I'll end you." he says as he launches forward, raising his sword over his head. However, he is quickly sent back as you notice that the figure already has his palm extended. When did he move it?
"Nah, too boring." he says as Hayashida lands on the ground and groans in pain. You study the figure, observing him. You can definitely tell a lot more about him now. "But where are my manners? I'm Katsumi Riduko, and I'm the one who opened the rift on behalf of orders from my group of friends." he says completely nonchalantly as he flaunts to the trainees.
Mae and Akira quickly step up and sneer at him. "I don't know what you just did, but if you think that we'll just let you go after admitting that, then you are in for a serious wake up call." the Were-wolf tells him as her body tenses, preparing to attack as well.
Katsumi Riduko simply smirks and crosses his arms in front of his chest. "Really? And what about you, puppy dog?" he asks her smugly, which halts her for a bit as she looks at him with a perplex expression. "I've been watching all of you all night long and I can read you like a book. For example, little puppy dog, you are impatient and always the aggressor in a fight. Are you trying to prove something to yourself? Are you trying to show how macho you are to show that you are nothing like the rest of those girly girls? You probably feel ashamed of liking the same things all the girls talk about, right?" he starts talking to her smugly and the wolf girl is clearly caught off guard and is surprised and hurt by the words that he is saying.
"Shut up!" she yells as tears start to form from her eyes. Really? Is she that easy to rile up? Is being like others girls that bad? Well...if he is talking about the type of girls that always cling to you like parasites, then you can somewhat understand her.
"Hey, nobody can talk to that furball like that! Not even me!" Akira quickly stands up for her fellow trainee as she sneers to the young man. Well at least she finally admits it. That's one headache you have to hear about.
"Well finally you admit that you care for her, little girl?" the stranger asks with a smug grin on his face, speaking with a condescending tone to match his expression. So when he was watching them all night, he was doing the same thing as you are doing to him now? Trying to psychologically analyze them and find out the type of person they are? And did he do this just so he can mess with them for his own enjoyment? Damn, this is bad. Everything is just a game to him.
His last line, which you know already from the short time you spent with the trainees, is a mental button that infuriates Akira. She could try to lunge at him at any second, which wouldn't be as successful as Hayashida's attempt. For how smart and mature Akira wants to be perceived, she has the temper and attitude of a kid.
"What did you just call me?!" she screams as she is quickly grabbed by Ito, who is holding back as she flails her hands wildly. "I'm not some stupid kid! I'll show you!" she screams furiously as some of her flailing hits Ito several times, making him wince in pain.
This Katsumi person simply laughs out loud, as if this annoying, childish sight is funny, which is astonishing to you. "Wow, I was certainly right about you. You're the type of girl who is so insecure about the fact that you look younger than your age that you try to compensate by appearing more mature and intelligent, getting stuck in a library reading dusty old book filled with irrelevant crap over hanging out with friends." he taunts the Were-cat, and like with Mae, it seems to shut her up completely. So it seems that what he's saying about her is actually true. You also had a similar opinion about Akira, but he's just using words to hurt her, where you would be blunt because that's who you are.
Akira looks at him completely stunned, with mouth agap as the expression on her face shows how much these words are affecting her as the the mysterious Katsumi continues. "You suffer from so many issues of low confidence that it's pathetic. Like, let's talk about the fact that you are so afraid that no man, especially the guy you're in love with, will ever accept you because you look like some 13 or 14 year old, so you take it out by beating him up. And how is that working for you exactly?" he continues to taunt, knowing exactly where to hit.
You can see that she turns red with embarrassment. She falls to her knees and starts to cry, weeping over how much this bastard exposed her doubts and self confidence issues. You stay quiet, now that you know what type of person he is. If he wants to hurt people with just words alone, fine. You'll play his game and you're going to win it. You may not know these trainees, but the things he's saying just for the sake of his enjoyment is sickening.
As you clench your hands into fists, you hear a scream, as Hayashida jumps up with his sword over his head. Now transformed and with a veil of red fiery energy surrounding his entire body, he brings down his sword as it's engulfed in flames, setting up a gigantic burst of fire that erupts and spreads forward over the entire place. The heat is blistering and the force of the attack is amazing, but you believe that it is going to do absolutely nothing.
The from within the flame the longsword is raised to face height, as the mysterious Katsumi walks out of the fire with a blue glow around him, much like the trainees do when they are using their spells, all the while he still looks smug. The scariest part is that he is completely unfazed by the attack. Just as you thought, he is too strong.
"Are you done? Because now it's your turn." he says, making the eyes demonic-looking Hayashida go wide with horror. He jumps back next to the rest of the group and transforms back to his human appearance.
Katsumi simply dusts his clothes as he hums a tune nonchalantly as everyone looks at him, completely horrified. "Now then, mister Cambion. What is it that you want to prove to everyone around you with that whole "I'm so edgy, too cewl for school" attitude of your? Are you maybe disappointed that your childhood was really plain or something? Do you want everybody to see you as this cool rebel who betrays the demons to join the Knights of Order because daddy left you and your boring mommy when you were little?" he mocks and taunts Hayashida with jovial and almost childish glee to his mocking tone.
He then raises his hand and points it at Ito. "You're too cowardly and tearing you and your obliviousness to pieces is just too easy. It won't be that much fun really. Well, aside from the fact that you brought a person completely under your league to deal with a bunch of monsters" he snips at Ito with the same smug smirk on his face that makes
He then points his finger at Arakawa. "And you're too sweet to be made fun of. I mean I can after your hidden snark inside of you, but I didn't see so much things to dissect you with tonight, so right now it's just going to leave a bad taste in my mouth, and that's no fun." he says to her as he looks a bit more serious than when he taunted the other three. So that means he is serious about what he is saying. At least he might have some standards after all.
He then glares at you and his his giant, ear to ear smug grin returns to his face. "And that leaves you, mister civilian." he says with a bit of anticipation as he taps his right foot on the burning ground. "You go into a situation that's way over your head with just a pair of brass knuckles and fight a bunch of monsters. Why exactly, by any measure of common sense, would you do that?" he asks you as you can tell that he is thrilled with questioning and mocking you.
"Was this because you wanted to show a bunch of knights how much of a big shot you are in the neighborhood? Is it because you have some weird "good sameritan" delusion that guides you?" he asks you, but you keep quiet. "Nah, that would require too much brain power. I think you're just the big, tough, stupid human who things he can fight monsters because he can beat some street punks." he theorizes with quite a bit of confidence in his voice.
You don't smirk. You know what type of person he is. Let's see how he likes a taste of his own medicine. "You think so? Is that coming from the bully who uses words instead of actions to hurt others." you tell him, catching him completely off guard. his eyes widen in shock and his smug grin is no longer on his face. Good.
"From what I can gather from you, you like to torment and taunt people whom you know are massively weaker than you, because they can't hurt you. That is probably because you enjoy it, but you don't get to do it very often." you tell him as you analyze him further. "From what you say, you are a part of a group of people who open rifts across the area, correct?" you ask him before continuing, not waiting long enough for an answer. "Then that means that all of them have more raw power and strength than you do, but you have a mischievous nature to you, which suppresses your desires. So when an opportunity stuck, you had to leap in." you speak with confidence in your words as you see that he is left in a state of shocked silence.
You keep your head cleared, trying to not show a sign of satisfaction from this. You need to stay calm and collected at all times. "You talk about self confidence issues? You forgot to mention yours, feeling inferior to your "friends" because they probably try to stick to the shadows and an attitude like yours can draw attention quickly, since you seem to enjoy taunting weaker people for a good laugh." you keep on talking as you know that all of this is affecting him. You can see it in his tense body language and by the fact that he is silent, despite talking a whole lot earlier.
"That rift that they closed tonight," you speak as you take out your right hand from the pocket of your pants and gesture to the trainees. "This was just a game to you. To see what the damage that it can do, looking at what type of unit would be sent to close it and once you find them you analyze and taunt and mock them just to get your monthly entertainment. Am I wrong?" you finish your long and piercing speech to him with a question, as now a small, smug smile appears on your face.
The mysterious Katsumi is utterly stunned and he doesn't say anything for quite a while after you finish talking. However, after about a minute in which of silence, he glares at you with anger in his eyes. Seems like every word you said was right, and it just pissed him off.
"That's...that's not funny. This isn't fun anymore." he says as he starts whispering something as he takes out some sort of talisman from the pocket of his jeans. "Playtime's over." he says as he moves, but all you feel is a gust of wind and a second later your right arm is raised up high, with him standing right next to you, with the talisman in his right hand.
"I was going to do this to you anyway, just so that I could make an interesting game for me to enjoy. Now though, I'm going to take a lot of pleasure in hearing you squirm like a worm." he whispers angrily as he shoves the talisman against the forearm of your right arm.
"AHH!!!" you scream in absolute agony as you fall to your knees as you watch the talisman burning away on your skin, leaving behind some sort of strange mark on it, which is the last thing you see before you close your eyes. Your skin burns as you feel as if every muscle and organ in your body is stabbed a thousand times every second.
You scream in more and more pain as you grab your right forearm and you feel your body fall to the ground as all your ears can hear are the sounds of your own screams. It doesn't take long for you to lose consciousness a few seconds later.
Prologue Has Ended!
So this is how the prologue ends. I am now going to update something in the character pages concerning the EXP, since the max EXP will grow with every level. Sorry I forgot about that.
Anyway, I have waited long to get here, since this guy, Katsumi Riduko is going to be one of the villains of this quest. Perhaps not the main villain or strongest villains of this quest, but he is still problematic. I hope that this update was enjoyable to you all. See you soon with the next update.
