Adapt (SMT/Worm AU)

Looked at the pictures...yep it looks really stupid. (but thanks for informing me that it was a thing in the crossover.)
I beg to differ, the horn looks awesome (even if the Demi-fiend really does look like he came out of a heavy metal album cover), but eh, to each their own.

If memory serves, the horn is a secondary brain, which makes me wonder what would happen if it broke. Also, the whole thing about Taylor being outed because of the horn is idiotic because, unless you forgotten, she has GLOWING TATTOOS! Even without the horn she'd still get outed thanks to that, and there is no make-up in the world that would cover it up.

GLOWING TATTOOS! Even without the horn she'd still get outed thanks to that, and there is no make-up in the world that would cover it up.

You have obviously not see some of the aging celebrities'... (yes, sort of joking) gloves, thick clothes and stuff for her face, it's probably at least possible to cover it up. Nothing you said really changes the fact that the horn looks stupid. (though the glowing lines are neat in that heavy metal cover way.)

You could also go the other way, full coverage in costume and blame the glowing stuff on tinkertech or something that happened in your civilian id.

My control over bugs improved dramatically since that day in the alley to the point I could connect to hundreds of thousands of bugs within a 2-kilometer radius. However, the more bugs I controlled, the less comprehension and control I had over them. It was possible that I would be able to refine my control and manipulate them in other ways than simply just order them around, but for now, re-enacting a scene straight from the bible was all I could do at the moment.

I'm very confused, does she have shitter bug powers than cannon but bigger range?

I'm very confused, does she have shitter bug powers than cannon but bigger range?
My understanding is she has her canon power but with faaaaar larger range, so it's going to take her longer to adapt (heh) and have fine control. It's also possible she can control what her range is, and the less she's controlling at once the easier it is to work on the individual level, but I'm less sure about that part.

I'm very confused, does she have shitter bug powers than cannon but bigger range?
She has her canon powerset, but it has a much wider range than before. She can also possibly affect demons instead of just bugs, but demons are slightly harder to control.

And if she gets sufficiently accustomed to her powers and gets stronger...well, let's just say Khepri will be making an early debut and leave it at that, hm?

And if she gets sufficiently accustomed to her powers and gets stronger...well, let's just say Khepri will be making an early debut and leave it at that, hm?
Oh fuck no.

I agree with @GunnarS14 that statement is all sorts of varying levels of horrifying. There is a reason why Khepri's spoken of in the same vein as Contessa in Ward.

Oh, trust me, my naive little boys and girls. You've yet to see the depths of my madness.

You think I have Cthuhlu's second cousin on speed dial for show?

All jokes aside, I do come up with some batshit insane ideas from time to time, but I like to think they aren't nearly as nutty as some would believe. In this case, Taylor growing to Khepri levels is actually a good thing for when the SMT elements of Adapt kick into high gear.

...she doesn't even need to manage early Khepri in order to hit Khepri levels of terrifying, you know.

There's plenty of demons that are bugs. Even some high-tier ones.

Baal/Beelzebub exists.

Oh god.

I'm getting Death Flies flashbacks...
Please don't make my utter terror even worse.

I didn't think that was possible, so please don't.
For those unfamiliar with SMT or may not know who they are talking about...
The image thingy is being a dick, so just click on the link. You want the "SMT II" tab image for reference.
Ugly bastard isn't he? And for those unfamiliar with Beelzebub and why it would be terrifying if Taylor ever met him, Khepri mode or no...

Well, one of his titles is "Lord of the Flies". Make of that what you will.

Oh, and change your pants will you? I can smell the poop bomb from here.

"I'm sorry, what?"

Panacea nodded. "It's true. That horn on your neck? It's a secondary brain."

I stared at the girl for several seconds before I sat down on a table. She finished examining my body for any unusual abnormality my Second Trigger may have caused. I wasn't sure what to expect, except maybe hearing how weird my body was now. The results of Amy's diagnostics were not what I was expecting. Judging by Miss Militia's expression neither was she.

"A secondary brain? You're certain of this?"

"I'm certain, though I should mention it doesn't function like a normal brain. It has the same parts a human brain has: Central sulcus, parietal lobe, cerebellum, brain stem, but their make-up isn't the same as a human brain. I can't make heads or tails of it. It's the same with the rest of her body. Externally, there's nothing different about her biology, but internally, the whole system's changed. It resembles a human biology, but its different. If I had to make a comparison, someone swapped her biology for something similar aesthetic-wise, but functions differently."

The soldier-themed cape frowned heavily. "Will it affect her negatively in any way?"

"Not that I could see. If anything, it's improved her. Her cells are working thousands of times more efficiently, dead cells are non-existent and she's all-but guaranteed to live a long life. By my estimate, Taylor can easily live to be well past 200 and barely look middle-aged."

I stared at Amy, my jaw metaphorically kissing the floor.

Glory Girl whistled. "Daaamn… Not gonna lie, kind of feeling jealous. So, what about the tattoos? That part of the whole new biology package?"

"That's another thing. They're not tattoos." We stared at the healer. "They're a lymphatic system."

Miss Militia and I were incredulous. "A lymphatic system?"

"Way better than a human's, too," Panacea added. "Between that and her new immune system, she'll never get sick."

I stared at my hands. The tattoos glow a faint dark blue, pulsating like a heartbeat. The more I looked at myself, the less I recognized what used to be me. It was like I was a stranger in my own body. Despite all the positives Amy listed, I felt apprehensive. My body being more durable didn't change the fact that I was…something less now. They insisted the change was because of my Trigger, but something in me doubted that. Whatever this new change was… It wasn't because of my Second Trigger. This was something else.

I just wish I knew what.

A few days went by after my first meeting with Glory Girl and Panacea. My transfer papers were finalized, and by March 1st, I would be part of a new team. I was a little disappointed I would have to leave so soon. I was starting to get a better grasp of the Wards, or at least the ones I met and got to know. I wouldn't go so far as to call Chris, Vista and Dennis "friends," but at the very least they were better people than Emma was.

It only occurred to me then that I never once thought about Emma since this whole thing started. Emma, the girl who used to be my best friend. Emma, the girl who threw our friendship away for Sophia.

When Dad came to visit, my curiosity got the better of me. I asked him about the Barnes while we hanged out in the recreation room.

"To be honest, I haven't talked to Alan in months," Dad said as he bit into his sandwich. After a few thorough chews, he swallowed the stuff in his mouth. "He did call me to ask how things were when…when your video was posted."

I grimaced. "What did he say?"

"The same stuff everyone at the docks said, offering their condolences and how sorry they were to hear what happened." A dark look flashed on his face. "I've been getting real sick of hearing that lately, never mind the phone calls I keep getting."

"I'm sorry."

"What do you have to be sorry for, kiddo? You didn't do a damn thing wrong. The only thing you're guilty of is being at the wrong place at the wrong time." He finished the last portions of his sandwich, gulping it down before taking a sip of his water. "But, enough about that. How are things here with you? Getting along with the Wards?"

"For the most part, yeah. I've only really talked with Vista, Kid Win and Clockblocker." There was Trent of course, but interactions between them were incredibly scarce to the point that she rarely, if ever, saw him up and about off duty. "Haven't had much time with Aegis or Gallant, though. I did get to meet Panacea and Glory Girl, though."

Dad smiled wryly. "The Dallon kids? I bet that must have been a treat."

It was, but not as much as it should have been. I debated whether to tell him about what my horns and tattoos really were, unsure how he'd react. Would he feel disgusted? See me differently than he did now?

I chose to say nothing of the matter. Instead, I changed the subject. "What about you, Dad? The transfer papers are finally settled. By next week, we'll be…"

"Yeah, I know…" His hand reached for mine. I didn't pull away. His hand felt rough and callous, probably from long years of work. He squeezed mine as if in reassurance. "Hey, it'll be fine. Your old man is a tough bastard, I hope you know."

The joke didn't lift my spirits much. I understood we needed this, but I felt so irritated. It was starting to feel as if we were reconnecting and I wasn't fucking it up, and now he had to move away from me while I stayed in another city. It was unfair. It was so fucking unfair I wanted to scream.

"I know that better than anyone." A forced smile, anything to reassure him. "What city will you be going to?"

"Boston. While there's no Dock Workers Union there, there's an opening for warehouse storage management near the wharf."

"That's good at least."

Dad sighed. "It'll be tough, considering how long I've been fighting for the guys at the docks. Probably won't be as hard as it will be for you. Have they told you what city you'll be assigned to?"

I learned the answer an hour after Dad left the building for his temporary apartment. Armsmaster himself came to inform me about my transfer.

For the second time today, I was rendered almost speechless. "…what? I-I'm sorry, I don't think I heard you correctly. Where did you say I was going?"

Beneath his beard, Armsmaster smiled slightly as if amused by my reaction. "I said, by the end of the week, you'll be shipped out to Houston, Texas. You should feel proud, Taylor. Not many new Wards get to say they trained under Eidolon when they're starting out."

Eidolon. The Eidolon. One of the most famous capes in the Protectorate and one of the Triumvirate, the strongest heroes in the world. The leader of the Houston Wards and colleague of Alexandria and Legend.

For the first time since this shit started, I felt ecstatic. I was getting to train under Eidolon!

"W-why?" I couldn't help but ask. "Don't get me wrong, this is-i-it's amazing, but why? Out of all people, why me?"

That was really the only thing I couldn't wrap my head around. As awesome as it was to hear that I would be training under a Triumvirate hero of all people, why did he pick me? I don't know the first thing about my powers aside from me being a tough Brute. I didn't have time-stopping abilities like Clockblocker, spacial-warping like Vista or techno-babble smarts like Kid Win or Gallant. I was average; an ordinary girl who just happened to be able to throw a punch or two.

So, why me?

"I'm afraid I don't know that myself," Armsmaster shrugged. "Maybe he took a personal interest in you? Who can say?"

Armsmaster didn't seem to be interested in why Eidolon picked me to be part of the Houston Wards. He probably thought it wasn't weird at all, or maybe he didn't care. The Tinker walked away after telling me the news, no doubt heading off back to his lab or to speak with Director Piggot.

Just as I was about to leave myself and head back for the recreation room, someone bumped into me. "Oh, sorry 'bout that!" I looked up and blushed. In front of me was a teen, either Aegis or Gallant, sporting sparkling eyes and a smile that would make any girl swoon. "I wasn't looking where I was going."

"It's fine, it was my fault," I said. "I'm Taylor. I guess your either Aegis or Gallant?"

"Gallant, though since I'm out of costume, feel free to call me Dean." Gallant and I shook hands. "I hear transfer papers went through. How does it feel knowing you'll be training under one of the most famous heroes in the U.S?"

I was excited, cautious, fearful; I wasn't sure how I should feel.

"Not sure. I'm still processing all of this…"

"Yo, Dean, what's the hold up?" Another teen with long hair and foreign features appeared from behind Dean, clasping a hand on his shoulder. "We're gonna be late for class." He paused when he saw me. "Oh, you're the new girl. Taylor, right?" I nodded. He smiled and extended a hand in greeting. "Name's Carlos. Nice to meet you."

"I'd love to stop and talk shop, but we gotta get to class now," Dean said abashed. "You should be lucky you don't go to Arcadia. Mr. Tyrone is a real hard-ass."

The mention of school gave me pause. Was there a school in Houston that would accept me? If it was possible, I would give anything to continue my studies. If the whole cape angle doesn't work out, I could always be a teacher or writer. I could practically see the headlines in the newspapers now. On the other hand, my circumstances weren't exactly normal. The horn would be easy to hide with a hood, but I don't think make-up or cosmetics would help hide the glowing tattoos. Maybe there's some kind of tinkertech that would hide my appearance?

If I was that lucky…

I spent the rest of the day in the recreation room, lazing about on the couch. I was in no mood for power testing, the Protectorate capes were out on patrol and the Wards, minus Vista, were all at school. There was nothing interesting on TV, either, and I didn't want to risk flipping through the news channels and see myself on the screen. I saw the video once and that was enough.

There wasn't anything interesting on PHO, either. Some were the same old discussions about who could beat who, who was better, supposed cape sightings, etc.

One thread did catch my attention, though.

Okay, so we've all had our fair share of crazies over the past couple of decades both before and after Scion showed up and people started getting superpowers. You've got the religious nuts who still believe the world is coming to an end, you've got Satanists and the usual nine-to-five devil worshipers, you've got the Fallen and their worship of the Endbringers...

And now we've got more crazies. I've been prowling PHO for a while, and lately I've been hearing people talk about what sounds like Case-53s coming out of the woodwork or biotinker creations (hoping to god Nilbog isn't looking to expand). Standard fare for cape crap, right?

Well, apparently, the newest crazies in the block are saying otherwise. They're saying the monster sightings are demons. Normally, I'd just write this off as the usual superstitious bullshit, but I've also been hearing rumors of this "Demon Summoning App" thing that's being given out by a PHO user named Lord_of_Flies.

Anybody got any info about whether this stuff is cape related or just more superstitious bullshit?

Don't know much about the topic myself, but there's been a lot of talk about that app here in Brockton Bay. I think its mostly bullshit, though.

I mean, come on, really? Demons? What are we, five?

I assume your talking about the Gaia Initiative, right? I happened to across their thread the other day.

I never thought I'd say this, but I would rather be an Evangelist than be part of these whackjobs.

I've been looking up information myself, and so far, I've got nothing. Pictures about the so-called "demons" are scarce, and what images I was able to find are shoddy camerawork.

At best, all I can say is that there are definitely some unique-looking Case-53 or biotinker creations. This is one of the better images I was able to find.

So, moving away from THAT godawful image that will require months of brain bleach, I've been hearing about monster sightings in New York. Supposedly Flechette ran into some kind of demon dog with two heads.

I doubt its her. Unless she's suddenly capable of creating new breeds of dogs, she's no biotinker.

That being said, assuming the dog is alive, I'd advise against telling her about it. God knows she might try and get it to join her.

On the subject of the Gaia Initative, I hear there's a chat room of the same name run by Lord_of_Flies. Any correlation between them?

►Nod
Replied On Feb 24th 2011:
Not sure, but based on heresay, it's probably likely. To get into the chatroom, you have to contact Lord_of_Flies and answer some questions before you get the access code to the chatroom. There are different questions every time from what I've heard.

As for the cult, they're pretty weird even by today's standards. A "might makes right" kind of group that believes humanity can stand on par with the gods if they cull weakness. Or some shit, fuck if I know.

We're getting off-topic though. Back to the subject of so-called "demons" I've heard there been some sightings of monsters in Houston.

"What…?"

I opened the link Acree provided.

The image was on a cape rumormonger site. It was blurry, almost impossible to make out, but the individual Acree mentioned was circled in green ink. I couldn't see his face due to the poor quality, not helped by the fact he was wearing a hood, but I could faintly see it in spite of the blur.

Gold eyes burning like embers, and green tribal tattoos that seemed to be glowing…

Okay, even I'm starting to feel worn out about this arc. Not sure if its because it's literally just been Taylor talking with others and learning more about her new condition or the lack of progression.

On the one hand, I imagine people will be happy if we end this quickly and get on to the real meat of the story, which is when Taylor's in Houston. On the other hand, I also don't want to rush this.

…ah, fuck it. I'll see if I can't wrap up this arc by next chapter but without rushing. On another note, I have scrapped the Browbeat interlude in favor of something else. The interlude is already finished, and you'll see it when this arc is wrapped up.

Oh wow, Taylor learning about her predecessor early? I can't even begin to image what a meeting between those two will be like.

I won't lie, this arc is probably one of the slowest you've done, but it's ultimately your story. Just don't screw yourself over, man.

So, is the Lord of Flies person actually Beelzebub? Or good ol' Louis? Or somebody else? (I mean it can't be Stephen, not unless you make it actually be Stephen Hawking, which would be kinda weird to see. He would have existed in Bet, after all.)

Also... uh oh. Gaia Initiative is always a bad sign... It's basically an entire organization of Shadow Stalkers. Unlike other SMT protagonists, I can't see Taylor having even slightly cordial interactions with a Chaos faction like them... and I also can't see her not filling all of the orifices of anybody from the Law faction she meets with all the bugs.

...Shit, Taylor's really perfectly set up to go down the Neutral/True route, huh? Like there's no way she could ever tolerate anything else, given her character and experiences.

Low-Tier demons might be able to kill them if they are lucky with Mudo; Mid-Tier demons could take them in a straight fight; High-Tier demons would outright laugh at them. And this is only if none of them aren't using a special gimmick. LOOKING AT YOU MOT!
