A Spell in Parseltongue (A Quest of the Potterverse)

[X] Be extraordinary

Vote tally seems a bit messed up, so it might need to be counted manually.

Was approval voting allowed or were people just making assumptions?
Programing it to start after the OP solve most of the issues, after one only has to account with the few time where the tally doesn't group answer as it should.

By my count here is the tally at this point:

Sophistication and Academia: 14
Here there be Giants: 11
Here we go again: 9
Take it to the bank: 5
Be Extraordinary: 4
Plan Puffwitch, For that nice Emigrée flavour, The Outsider: 1

I did consider going for Wizarding Patrician in Sophistication and Academia, but my goal with that plan was to give a somewhat middle ground within the constraints of the character idea I had - Ravenclaw and a flair/appreciation for sophistication, which would be of the enlightened academic in Ravenclaw. I had other potential ideas for the character, but that's dependant on the choices the character takes, should this plan even be accepted.

For example, people could choose to go a more Wicked Cultured route (because smart and intelligent villains and antagonists are the shit) or a more well-meaning one. Another option would be for the character to have a motivation of making his family rise to the very top of their society in terms of status, social, politic and economic power, so the second tier (quite rich parents but not overly so) was best for it. It's the best place for the character to actually have wealth and some status and yet want more of it, if the player base decides that, of course.

To be honest, the point of the plan is to give an easily starting point from which to work towards a particular characterization: as a Ravenclaw and a Sphinx to boot, it's easy to swing either towards a pro-Rainbow Ministry stance, a low-key Pro-Grindewaldite (and even maybe future Voldemort supporter), or go for a neutral stance in the beginning and be a able to support it within the narrative with only a
few adjustments. I honestly think going for Ravenclaw gives us plenty of options, even if it may seem like a "safe choice".

And besides, I'm itching for a good Ravenclaw quest. Too many Slytherin ones, we already got Gryffindor in canon and tbh, I don't really care too much for Hufflepuff :p

@phil03 I was wondering if you were going to change some of the lore sections of the RP or you're going to let them as they were? I've seen the few you've posted, but haven't had the chance to go over them in detail.

Also, I can't wait to see the RP characters show up.
At this point the only meaningfull change I made was having the Dragons formaly divided, I felt I needed to better drive home how badly the war had affected them. I plan to flesh out some things more when I will get to it but there won't be too many actual divergences for now. I do plan to note it when I will made changes compared to the RP, both in further developing stuff and in downright modifying when it will come to it.

As for the characters from the RP, some of the choices of the next update would have you pick some friends and rivals you made during the last four years and you can bet there will be a fair few of them as options in both regards! In fact, while I do plan to have them stay who they are at their core, they might very well be the firsts in whom you might nevertheless see some differences from the RP if your choices change their backstories ;)

As for your reasoning on your character, overall you make a solid case for your plan. The one caviat I would make would be when it come to how politics will play. Overall all choices you have will have consequences and be important in where the PC will start, how he/she is seen, his/her interactions and who he/she will be, political factions included. None of them are blankslates and the Sphinxes have their beliefs and program.

For the Sphinxes these beliefs and program include an opposition to everything they see as extremism, especially the violent kind, and that lead most of them to be fervent supporters of the war against Grindelwald. Obviously, and since we are talking about very decentralised factions here rather then political parties as we understand the term, there is always some exceptions, like Evelyn in the RP, but overall dislike for Grindelwaldism is one of the thing the overwhelming majority of them would agree on. This is reflected by the fact that choosing the Sphinx as your faction also give you the Anti-Grindelwaldite trait.

In fact, the Rainbow Ministry the (i.e the coalition government presently in charge of the ministry because of the war, more on them latter for those who didn't play the RP) is at its core an alliance between Sphinxes and Phoenixes that smaller groups joined more or less shortly after it was concluded.

Now, none of this mean that your beliefs are necessarely set in stone, traits gain be gained or lost and there is definitely ways to have a PC that is villainous for apolitical reasons. It is fair to say, however, that a Sphinx PC will start with a pretty firm position on the war and is unlikely to be convinced by what Riddle would propose without some serious changes in their ideologies beforehand.

Hopefully I didn't ramble too much but the overall point I tried to make, that choosing a faction is an opportant decision and that no matter what you choose you will open and close at least some posibilities down the line, is valid for all plan so I felt it was worth spending some virtual ink to make :p :)

Discipline At Hogwarts, or Attempts at it Aniway
And since the PC will be a prefect I tought it might not be a bad idea to learn more about discipline at Hogwarts, or attempts at it aniway ;)

Discipline At Hogwarts:

If they're is one constant in Hogwarts long and fabled history is the ever present difficulties felt by the staff in enforcing discipline. Magic, despite what many believe, isn't and can't be a solution to everything and, with hundreds of students in such a large and majestic castle maintaning discipline couldn't but present a challenge. Even if the portraits might prove willing to help with surveillances in the most dramatic situations and the prefects doing much to help the staff in that regard. We will endavour to review the structure who, through the last centuries, has ensured that Hogwarts rules where applied, or attempted to at the very least.

Prefects, Head Boys and Head Girls: In 1721, in what would become know to history as the April Unpleasantness two groups of students, one from Gryffindor and the other from Slytherin, met in the corridors of the school at night. The ensuing argument turned into a brawl and eventually into a full on battle between the two houses. Before the teachers where able to recover control of the situation a significant portion of the school had been burned to crisp/and or blown to pieces. Some of the students had suffered tranfigurations so bizzare it took a few months to give them back their original forms. A few weeks afterward, headmaster Dexter Fortescue decided that, due to the growing number of students, teaching and auxiliary staff would need further assistance to ensure discipline, particularly to patrol the corridors at night, thus the prefects where born.

While different protocols and manner of selection of prefects where toyed with during the first years of their existence, by the 1740's the process and criterias through witch they where selected, as well as their powers, had already reached the shape they retain today. Every year, two fifth years of each house, a boy and a girl, would be selected and join the ranks of the prefects. While the headmaster retain in theory the right choose the new prefects he, in practice, most often defer to the judgement of the heads of houses, merely retaining a veto on all selections. A good prefect would naturaly need to have shown academic prowess as well as reliability but would also need to be respected, even if not popular, among his fellow students in general and his housemates in particular.

Appart from patrolling the coridors of the school at night prefects are to handle any breaking of the rules they might withness or of which they might be informed,, keep order inside their own common rooms and dormitories and supervise the students of their houses in case of emergency. A fifth year prefect of each houses also traditionally make the speeches given to the newcomers. To be able to fulfill their duties prefects have been given the power to retract, or give, up to 15 points to student of other houses as well as retracting up to 25 to students of their houses and/or refer them to the head of their houses for a maximum of one day of detention as well as the ability to generally be believed by the adult staff above all other students. With a prefect badge also come far greater freedom then enjoy most students, as prefects are exempted from the curfiew and are allowed to accede to all parts of the castle safe for teacher offices, the dungeons and the forbidden section of the library (tough, in practice, prefects who desire it most often are to get all the authorisation they need in that regard). In practice, much of the responsability to respect that rules are respected fall on their shoulders.

Every year, often from the ranks of the prefects but not necessarely, a Head Boy and an Head Girl, both seventh years students, are selected by the Headmaster to coordinate the actions of the prefects. While Head Boys and Head Girls are not given much more power then most prefect in theory, with only the ability to make the schedule for patrols to be named in that regard, those nominations tend to be highly coveted nevertheless as they carry a great ammount of prestige. Moreover, as a large part of a prefect duties are turned toward students of their own house, prefects of each houses have often tended to look to one or two of their own as defacto leader a badge of Head Boy or Head guarantee to its wearer the inheritance of such a mantle.

Professors, Auxiliary Staff and Head of Houses: Appart from the caretaker, who has to refer any discipline related matter to other members of the staff, professors and members of the auxiliary staff are given great leaway in the application of the school rules. Able to withdrawn and grant house points without limitation, members of the staff can access all areas of the castle, safe for common rooms and offices of colleagues and can give up to a week of suspension to any students. Common rooms can only be acceded by their heads of houses, who are expected to handle any major incident withing them, as well as the Headmaster and Deputy Headmaster and students whose offenses are deemed to warrant harsher punishment then a week of detention are sent to their head of houses for decision. Additionally, member of the teaching staff have the power to grant permission to acceded the forbiden section to students if they see fit, such permission can be as large or as limited as they desire, both in scope and in time.

Headmaster and Serious Cases: When a situation is deemed by other member of the staff to warrant a punishment who would last for at least a significant part of the school and/or corporal punishments the headmaster would handle the matter personally. Such situations would often involve a significant ammount of violence, great risks for other students or suspected criminal activities.

Expulsion: Only causing the death or unreversable mutilation of a fellow student, hurting a member of the staff or otherwise being quilty of criminal activities can allow for the expulsion of a student. As such a decision carry with it the interdiction to carry a wand or make voluntary magic for the remainder of the ex-student such a decision isn't taken lightly and can only be made by Hogwarts Board of Governors after solid proofs have been provided. In some rare instance, however, a student expulsed for other reasons then criminal activites might be able to retain his wand if his expulsion occur after he had already completely some of his N.E.W.T exams as any student having at least achieved one Acceptable is deemed to have shown themself capable of handling the responsabilities coming with wielding a wand outside of school as an adult wizard. As such a decision carries far less implication for the future of the student and tend to be seen by Wizarding Britain as far less of a stain on the former student character (indeed, Mr. Scamander might be the most well know of the students to be expulsed in those circumstances to rise above the mistakes of his youth and achieve great successes but he wasn't the first one) the Board of Governors has tended to be less hesitant to simply cut the remain days of N.E.W.T student at school short then it is when come the time to terminate one magical education earlier on.

I did account for all that, don't worry. My reasoning was more or less what you say in terms of being able to shape the character to the point the character's political stance might shift after extensive character development: this is especially relevant when it comes to Grindelwald and Riddle, since it would take a committed player base to shift the Sphinx stance enough for the PC to consider allying with such people. Basically, if people want the PC to be villain/evil, they'd need to actually work for it given the starting political stance, which is a good thing in my opinion, since it would take commitment to go through it and not just half-ass it.

This is not an endorsement or something I'd personally vote for, mind. I just thought I should leave the option open within the plan in case people are actually interested in pursuing it, even if it might be more difficult with the options chosen than with other combinations.

Pumped to see the RP chars, then. I'll eagerly wait the update.

Also, the Disciple at Hogwarts lore reminds me we should aim to become Head Boy/Girl if we can. While it not may give much benefits at first glance, it carries a certain degree of prestige and it will certainly affect our standing with our peers, especially once out of Hogwarts. It's a good place to start networking for the future too, if people are interested in that.

Character Creation Part I.I: What is in a name?
Voting is over, the winner is:

[X] Sophistication and Academia
-(X) Wizard
-(X) Pureblood
-(X) The Sphinxes
-(X) Ravenclaw
-(X) Scions of the Wizarding Upper Class
-(X) 11 and 3/4 inches, Elm and Phoenix feather

Thanks to all who voted, it was a rather close race :)

The next major update is underway but, in the meantime...

I. Now that we know many things about you it is high time we put a name to the Wizard. To the world you are know as...

( ) (Write-In. I reserve myself to veto anything too outlandish or too contradictory with canon and the Bones, Blacks, Greengrasses, Crouches and Malfoys are off limits as they fit far better with the Wizarding Patricians background but appart from that let your creativity fly free!)

[X] Arnold Chenery

Let's go with a complete OC instead of trying to insert family ties to canonical characters.

[X] Maxwell Selwyn

There was a plot I recall I had made about Professor Selwyn being uninterested in leading the house so she'll be leaving it to one of her younger siblings, or rather the one that wins her approval. It's an interesting plot that already exists to develop on.

[X] Moses Moss

M&M, religion, and "But greens the family color son!" "I'm blue deal with it!"

Norbert ''Nobby'' Leach
I really wanted to be able to post an update this week-end but RL stuff plus the fact it will probably turn out to be even lenghtier then the first one have prevented me to wrap up everything I had in mind. I considered posting only what I had already at hand but at the end I decided against it: better to take the time to polish stuff properly and to wrap-up character creation in two updates, allowing us to move to the story itself! (And hopefully somewhat shorter updates).

In the meantime I tought it would be nice, since we are in Ravenclaw and all, to introduce you to the greatest war hero coming from our PC's house! People familliar with their HP canon might have heard his name before ;)

While I did post his character sheet on my old worldbuilding thread I never came around to introduce him the RP itself either, so this bit of worldbuilding might be new to some who played the RP as well! :)

Norbert ''Nobby'' Leach

Gender: Male
Age: 35
Nationality: Irish
Blood & Economic Status: Muggleborn/Wealthy
Hogwarts House & Year: Formerly a Ravenclaw, tough it is widely believed that he would have been a Slytherin weren't not for his blood status.
Wand: Aspen with a core of Thestral tail hair
Other Possessions: A Comet 180, a She Owl named Victoire, a whisker cat named Alfred and enough gold to distribute bribes generously.
Bio: Born from a familly of successfull muggle barristers Leach showed signs of extreme magical potency at a very young age, with his parents often finding several rooms inside their house painted in blue, the young boy favorite color, and some of Nobby plane toys flying accross the kitchen doing loopings. As a result, the arrival of Nobby's letter of acceptance to Hogwarts proved somewhat less surprising to the Leach household then to the famillies of most muggleborns and was, in fact, greeted with joy as it finally provided an explanation for the ''oddities'' of young Norbert.

While he quickly adapted to the new world he was now part of and absorbed much of its culture Leach nevertheless had to face purist prejudices and bullying. While his evident magical and academic gifts made some of the more moderate purists willing to disregard his origins, at least to some degree, they also made him even more of a target to their more extremist counterparts. Not content to simply fight back against those trying to go after him with both his wand and his wits Leach quickly took the habits to use them, as well as those of some likeminded wizards he had gathered around him, to defend any muggleborns of Half-Bloods with close ties to the muggle worlds who might need help. As such, the young Ravenclaw came be to be involved in many duels and other magical skirmishes, and was sometime severely punished for it.

Still, Nobby Leach proved to be an extremely brilliant student. Gifted with charisma and an outgoing personallity he got along rather splendidly with the majority of the school staff and students and was particularly popular among his fellow Ravenclaws. Such where, in fact, his academic prowesses that latter days magical historians would deem him the most exceptional wizard produces by Hogwarts between Albus Dumbledore and Tom Riddle and that Armando Dippet would eventually invite the young prodigy student to assist him in some of his ressearch in the very nature of magic. Therefore, actions that might very well have lead headmaster Dippet to consider its author out of contention when came the time to select prefects had they been commited by anyone else didn't prevent the student from becoming the first muggleborn head boy or head girl in close to a century. Nor did the dislike for Slytherin he acquired throughout his years in Hogwarts (the young wizard was often heard saying that it was not his blood who made him unworthy of Slytherin but Slytherin dislike for his blood status that made it unworthy of him) prevent him from becoming a member of the very first incarnation of the Slug Club.

It was there that the Ravenclaw prefect met his future wife, Antonia Malfoy. By all accounts, her adhesion to the ideology of her forefathers had always seemed rather forced but, in her own words, she lacked the courage to openly denounce it until she met and fell in love with Nobby. While it took a few months for her to convince him of the truth of her feelings the pair never looked behind afterward, even tough their relationship lead to Antonia being disowned by her familly and Nobby becoming even more of a target in the eyes of those hating muggleborns. A gifted witch in her own right, Antonia served alongside her boyfriends as head girl. Upon graduation they both joined the ranks of the Departement of Mysteries where Leach enjoyed a rather metheoric rise, becoming Guardian of the Death Chamber at the young age of 27 years old.

Despite his professional successes at home, however, Nobby couldn't stay indiferent to the events unfolding in Europe and, in 1937, he and Antonia resigned from the ministry to join the fight against Grindelwald alongside the french, leaving their two childrens under the care of friends. There they quickly made themselves widely know for both their magical might and their tactical accumens, allowing Nobby to secure the support he needed to put to execution the plan he had in mind since leaving England. Under his command he, Antonia and ten other very talented wizards marched deep into territories under Grindelwald sway, operating from the shadows they did all they could to undermine the power he had over team, carrying strike against individuals and organisations following him and helping wizards wishing to escape his domination to do so. Widely celebrated as heroes in those countries on the continent still fighting the hordes of the Dark Lord, he and his comrades in arms came to be know as The Boggarts, for their tendency to always be where and always do what Grindelwald and his followers most feared. Such a thorn to Gellert Grindelwald side has Nobby Leach proved to be that the dark wizard has reportedly come to refer to him as ''The Second Wizard of Britain''.
