A Spell in Parseltongue

The year is 1942 and the world is in constant peril. Muggles fight and die in their war, but the wizarding world has its own battles to win. The dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald rises in Eastern Europe, terrifying magical communities and setting into motion his plan to subdue the peoples of this world and mould the future into his wicked image. He carries a wand of unimaginable power and his minions are everywhere.

However, all of this pales in comparison to the horrors that are about to be unleashed upon the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, under the care of Headmaster Armando Dippet and his deputy, the magnificent Professor Albus Dumbledore. An evil will rise from within the school as the heir of Salazar Slytherin summons his heritage to purge Hogwarts of all those unworthy students who carry the mudblood taint. The Chamber of Secrets is open, and Hogwarts will no longer be the paradise it used to be.

And you, you who are only fifteen years old and celebrated becoming a prefect mere weeks ago, what part will you play? How will you face the challenges, old and you, that will come in this most fatefull of school year? Only time will tell.

AUTHOR NOTE:

Welcome to my quest! Here you will control a fifth year Hogwarts prefect during the 1942-1943 School Year, when the Chamber of Secrets was opened for the first time. No, not THAT prefect! Another one, that will come into being through your votes!

Between the first sparks of the wars who would dominate the years of the book, the fight against Grindelwald, World War II looming in the shadows and a Wizarding Britain going through a time of societal changes it will, to be sure, not be a quiet year!

This quest is an adaptation of an old RP of mine and the concept originally came from @ByzantineCaesar (who incidently also wrote much of what you have already read) and its mechanics are heavily inspired by @Telamon quests. All due credits to them, and to J.K Rowling of course.

NOTE ON MECHANICS

If I had to characterise the format of the quest I would use the term ''CK2-lite''. Your character will have traits that will affect how it will do in different situation and dices will be used but there is no hard mechanics dictating how the traits will work in every situation and things will work more on a case per basis and your abilities won't be attached to numbers like in most CK2-quest.

One of the challenges I faced in making the transfer from RP to quest was that I wanted to both give the players access to the large diversity of background, beliefs and outlooks present among Hogwarts students (with one key exception that will become evident bellow) but I also wanted to ensure that the end result would be a character who would make sense in-universe. The ods of having a Gryffindor muggleborn be a fervent believer in blood purity are rather small, for exemple. Those two preocupations resulted in probably the only fully original mechanics of this quest: Compatibility and Priority. They will mostly be used during character creation.

Compatibility ensure that your character won't have character traits in contradiction with each other or who would simply prevent a student from being chosen as a prefect in the setting. Sometimes options will either only be available if you gained some traits already through previous choices or would not be available because of them.

Priority means that, in case of incompatibility between two choices in the same update, one question will have priority over the other and the latter will have to default on the option with the most vote that isn't incompatible with any question having priority over it. The order of priority correspond to the order through which the question will appear in the post.

I will allow plans for the moment but it definitely isn't mandatory and I reserve myself to change my mind and/or take the total of one options that isn't part of the most popular plan if I see its the most popular options overall on a particular vote. I am also ok with approval voting.

RULES

While I do want to encourage a free debate and a lively discussion as much as possible I won't tolerate any OOC support of in-universe bigotry. It is both against the rules of the forum and in very poor taste, especially considering how closely it is inspired by RL events.

Appart from that simply follow the good old ''Be Excellent to Each Other'' and you will be fine :)

Start of the Game: We'll all start at King's Cross Station on September 1st, 1942.

I. The Wizarding World might not care all that much but it still remain part of who you are. So, are you a wizard or a witch?

( ) Wizard
Gain the trait Wizard.

( ) Witch
Gain the trait Witch.

II. Unfortunately the Wizarding World do, however, very much care about your blood status. Whether you are a Blood Supremacist yourself, deem Blood Purity a malevolent lie or simply do not ascribe much importance to the matter your blood status will affect your life, for the better and for the worst. Are you a Pureblood, Half-Blood, Muggleborn or a Half-Breed?

( ) Muggleborn

By your eleventh birthday you considered that you weren't a child anymore and you had accepted the depressing truth: magic wasn't real. It had never been a force in the world and had only existed in fairy tales, plays and novels. Then the letter came and you danced and singed, relishing in advance in the wonders of the world you were about to discover and where now a part off! Magic existed after all and you where magical! Magical and wonderful the Wizarding World definitely was but only a few weeks at Hogwarts where necessary for you to discover it's most unpleasant side, to understand how strongly wizards and witches like you where hated, to gather how much your very origins marked you as a target in the eyes of some and how many obstacles who you where could put on your path. Yet, you refused to lay low and resolved to make your way in your new world. Whatever you did with your first four years at the wizarding school of Britain you seemed to have accomplished to impress for, in spite of your origins, you were chosen as one of your house two new prefects, marking you, in theory at least, as one of the most promising wizard or witch of your year. You are a Muggleborn.

Gain the trait Muggleborn. Gain the trait The Other War, you have friends and family members fighting in World War II and wizards seeking information and discussions on the great war ravaging the Muggle World will seek you out.

( ) Half-Blood

In and of themselves your roots are far from remarkable. You are not a Muggle or a Muggleborn but you can count at least one of them among your grandparents, like a majority of British Wizards. Like a majority of British Wizards you expected your Hogwarts and yet knew the names of folks who never received theirs. Like most British Wizards you have ties to both worlds. Wizards and witches like you are as numerous as they are diverse. Among them can be found all walks of life, degrees of wealth and political opinion Wizarding Britain itself contain. And yet, while your blood status might be unremarkable something else in you must have distinguished you among your fellows for you were chosen as one of your house two new prefects, marking you, in theory at least, as one of the most promising wizard or witch of your year. You are a Half-Blood.

Gain the trait Half-Blood, giving you access to further options to determine exactly how many ties with the Muggle World your family has. Gain the trait Under the Twin Shadows, you are among the unlucky souls whose lives are affected by both the Global Wizarding War and World War II.

( ) Pureblood

Whatever ties your family once had with the Muggle World has receded far past living memories. You, your parents and your grandparents where all born in the Wizarding World and you cannot truly conceive life in another. Receiving your Hogwarts letter was not only expected but deemed by all around you to be among the great milestone of a wizard or a witch like you and when entered the time honoured hall your family name was known to many already. Moreover, and while you might or might not believe them, many consider that wizards like you should be ruling Wizard Britain. Whether it was the influence of those holding those beliefs, your own accomplishments or a combination of both that gained you your badge cannot be know for sure but the results is, at any rate, the same: you were chosen as one of your house two new prefects, marking you, in theory at least, as one of the most promising wizard or witch of your year. You are a Pureblood.

Gain the trait Pureblood. Gain the trait A House Divided, you have relatives fighting for and against Grindelwald.

( ) Half-Breed

Interactions between Wizards and other magical beings have often be fraught with tensions, to say the least. Both fearing and despising them, witches and wizards have kept Goblins, Vampires, Centaurs, Merpeoples, Giants, Hags, Veelas and Elves from studying in Hogwart's allowed halls or occupying high office at the ministry while also depriving them of the rights to hold a wand and vote to help choose Ministers for Magic. These magical beings, for their part, often resented human control of Wizarding Britain and its chronicles have often been filled with the tales of ferocious battles between wizards and witches and others who were gifted with both magic and sentience. And yet, in spite of all of this friendship have flourished between individuals of different species, allowing you, a product of the latter, to exist. In the eyes of the ministry you are to be counted among the wizards and, therefore, when you turned 11 you received your letter of admission to Hogwarts. Your years at Hogwarts have not been easy, however, as even more then muggleborns wizards and witches like you are the target of blood purists, while also having to face the prejudice, and possibly the hatred, they held toward the specie of your non-magical parent. In spite of all of this, however, you were able to gain the esteem of enough students and professors to be chosen as one of your house two new prefects, marking you, in theory at least, as one of the most promising wizard or witch of your year. You are a Half-Breed.

Gain the trait Half-Breed, You will have access to further choices to help determine your exact origins. Gain the trait Target of the Dark Lord, Half-Breed are the object of special hate among Grindewald's supporters.

III. Wizarding Britain, and generally the Wizarding World as a whole, do not contain political parties in the muggle sense of the term. That is not to say, however, that political divides do not exist inside the Ministry of Magic, for such a thing would have been impossible, but that they instead those divisions took the forms of extremely loosely structured political factions, with more then a few overlaps and allot of differences of opinions among their ranks. For all of their lack or organisation and cohesion it is around those factions that the political life of Wizarding Britain revolves and it is they who often fill the pages of the Prophet and the airwaves of the WBC. You might or might not be heavily politically minded yourself but you think of these matters often enough to have an opinion. Which faction do you side with?

The Dragons

Named after the most famous and emblematic of magical beasts, the Dragons, or their ideological predecessors, have often dominated the scene since the foundation of the ministry. Conservative, tough some would say reactionary, in nature they seek to preserve the British wizarding society as it is or to turn back the clock to its state during the late 19th century, before the pourcentage of muggleborns and the number of unions between wizards and muggles began to grew apace and before those they deem of a lesser blood status began to challenge the status quo. As such, the dragons tend to be convinced, and fairly strident, purists, wanting to further enshrine in laws the dominance of the pureblood and the relegation of muggleborns to what muggles of the 21st century would call second classe citizens. To what degree and when, exactly, was the golden age to which the needle needed to be turned back too can vary depending on which member of the faction is asked.

While traditionally the strongest of all wizarding political factions in Britain, and they probably still are, the Dragons have experienced something of a decline throughout the last decades, as the demographic trend of Wizarding Britain worked against them. Moreover, the Global Wizarding War has both lead many of their figures to be seen with suspicions by much of Wizarding Britain, isolating them from other factions, and has caused grave divisions among their ranks. Having failed to arrive on any kind of common ground on the matter the Dragons have essentially lost whatever internal cohesion they once had. While they will probably reunify at the end of the conflict the Dragons have, for the moment, essentially split into three subfactions.

( ) The War Dragons

Whether because they deem Grindelwald as much of a threat to wizarding traditions than anyone else, are disgusted by his methods, simply deem him too extreme or some combination of the above, the War Dragons have chosen to support the war effort of the ministry. As a result they have joined the Rainbow Ministry, as the political coalition surrounding Minister Spencer-Moon has been dubbed, and share the dislike of most of Wizarding Britain for those opposing the war effort. While there is an exception the War Dragons could generally be counted among the more moderate members of their faction before the war. You are a defender of traditions but you also understand that the Heir of Herpo the Foul need to fall. You side with the War Dragons.

Gain the trait Dragon. Gain the trait Purist, you are among those firmly convinced of the superiority of the Purebloods over all other wizards, especially Half-Breed and Muggleborns, and you want to see your society organised around those believes. Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions.

The Peace Dragons

Whether because they harbour some sympathies for Grindelwald and his cause or because they simply dislike the changes brought upon by the war, as well as some of those presently leading the ministry, the Peace Dragons resolutely and unambiguously oppose Spencer-Moon and its anti-Grindelwaldite politics. Their respect for the letter of the law and the care they take to not openly praise Grindelwald has kept them out of Azkaban and allowed to operate in the open but it has not dissipated the strong dislike, something verging on hatred, in which they are held by the Anti-Grindelwaldites. Nor did it do much to protect them from accusations of being covert Grindelwald supporters. Such as their unpopularity that nowhere would one of them have garnered the necessary degree of respect to make a good prefect, not even in Slytherin. Therefore, you do not side with the Peace Dragons.

Gain the trait Dragon. Gain the trait Purist, you are among those firmly convinced of the superiority of the Purebloods over all other wizards, especially Half-Breed and Muggleborns, and you want to see your society organised around those believes. Gain the trait Suspected Grindelwald Sympathiser, you are, at best, distrusted by most of Wizarding Britain.

( ) The Old Dragons

Whether because they are genuinely conflicted as to the path to follow or because they are hoping to reconcile all Dragons after the end of the war the Old Dragons have scrupulously maintained a middle ground between War and Peace Dragons. While they do not truly support the war neither do they oppose it. In effect, they adopted a kind of neutrality that lead them to act on the political scene as if the war had never happened as much as possible. You identify with their aims and also long to see the Dragons reunitied. You side with the Old Dragons.

Gain the trait Dragon. Gain the trait Purist, you are among those firmly convinced of the superiority of the Purebloods over all other wizards, especially Half-Breed and Muggleborns, and you want to see your society organised around those believes. Gain the trait Neutral in the Global Wizarding War, while not directly suspected of Grindelwaldite sympathies you are still something looked with warry eyes by many.

( ) The Phoenixes

Named after the capacity of the magical bird to ensure its own rebirth through its very ashes, they deem the Pheonix cycle of death and rebirth to be a perfect allegory expressing the fact that change was not something to be necessarely feared. The Pheonixes tend to gather under their wings all the partisans of a gradual, but real and profound, change to Britain magical society toward a more equalitarian future. Equalitarian to what degree may vary from one of their supporter to another, and often fall short to what a man like Albus Dumbledore might deem desirable, for example. Still, most phoenixes tend to be devoid of prejudices toward muggleborns and half-blood (tough they might still arbor some against other magical beings as well as against muggles) and have proven to be the soul of the War. With Leonard Spencer-Moon they have managed to make one of their own Minister for Magic. You too have come to belief that Wizarding Britain is in dire need of important reforms. You side with the Phoenixes.

Gain the trait Phoenix. Gain the trait Reformist, you believe that blood status is meaningless and that prejudices related to it are to be fought against. Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions.

( ) The Sphinxes

Given that they share some of the both the attachment of the Dragons toward the traditions and past of Wizarding Britain and the willingness of the Phoenixes to accept change, or even be agents of it, the sphinxes are curious beasts indeed. Having chosen the beast as their symbol for the wisdom they attribute to themselves, the Sphinxes are, at their core, pragmatists wanting to preserve as much of the traditions of Wizarding Britain as possible but, unlike the Dragons, tend to recognise that, to one degree or another, the present state of affair might not be sustainable in the mid to long run, or that it might be even desirable to do so. They are, therefore, open to accept, or even favour some changes to address the grievances of less favoured members of magical society. While often at least somewhat prejudiced over blood statuses, the Sphinxes have proven to be relatively amenable to muggleborn, willing to favour those demonstrating talents and intelligence and would seldom utter slurs like mudblood or actively persecute them in any way whatsoever, being essentially more elitists then purists. In fact, the Sphinxes, and their ideological predecessors, have often proven a strong bulwark against the policies advocated by the most extremists of purist in the past. The attitude of one professor Horace Slughorn gives a good idea of where the Sphinxes stand on the matter. While representing the greatest grouping of moderates among the ranks of the Ministry, and therefore keeping cordial relations with dragons (of the non-peace variety) and Phoenixes alike, the sphinxes have nevertheless proven to be extremely outspoken in their opposition to extremism of all kind, and are therefore reliable supporters of Minister Spencer-Moon in his crusade against Grindelwald. You share their doubts, hopes and fears for the future. You identify with the Sphinxes.

Gain the trait Sphinx. Gain the trait Opponent of Blood Supremacy, you might or might not be completely devoid of prejudices related to blood status yourself but you can generally be counted upon to oppose the outright persecution of muggleborn. Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions.

( ) The Owls

Taking the names of the mail carriers who play such a crucial role in the daily businesses of Wizarding Britain, the Owls have long sought to swipe any questions related to what we would call social matters under the rug to prevent them from disturbing the social peace and economic prosperity of Wizarding Britain. For many years, such an approach proved efficient from a political standpoint, if not a societal one, has the Owls have often managed to form the main centrist force in wizarding politics and monopolised the post of Minister for Magic throughout much of the early years of the 20th century. Their reluctance toward anything they deemed rash actions ended up costing them dearly, however, as it caused much of the blame for the initial inaction of the ministry in front of Grindelwald threat to be blame on them and on their minister, Hector Fawley. As a result, much of their partisans defected toward more belligerents factions like the Sphinxes and even, in some cases, the Pheonixes. Still, the Owls retain a sizable block of supporters and they have eventually come to believe that Grindelwald was a threat grave enough to justify actions they would usually be reluctant to take. As a result, they retain a few seats at the proverbial table inside Spencer-Moon ministry. You too believe that nothing good can come of openly engaging the most explosive questions existing in Wizarding Britain. You identify with the Owls.
Gain the trait Owl. Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions.

( ) The Lions

Like the Pheonixes, the Lions, who have taken the name to honour Godric Gryffindor and his reported support of muggleborns attendance at Hogwarts, have come to believe that Wizarding Britain as it exist in 1942 need to change. Unlike the Pheonixes, however, there no is vagueness whatsoever when it comes to what they would like to see come to pass. Their ethos is well encompassed by the famous quote once uttered by the most of illustrious wizards of his time, before it was repeated by his waywark former friend: ''Muggles are not lesser''. For Lions the same statement also apply to Merpeoples, Goblins, Veelas or even House elves! Wizarding Britain is changing and they might very well grow in numbers and powers but for now the Lions operate very much on the fringes of the political game. You share their dream. You identify with the Lions

Those Who Know the Truth

Under such a pompous euphemism are hidden the few active partisans Gellert Grindelwald retain at the ministry. Reduced to clandestinely they masquarede as Peace Dragons and Basilisks and they seek to assist their hero in whatever way they can without landing in Azkaban. As the mere suspicions of such beliefs would disqualify a student you, as a prefect, do not identify with them.

Gain the trait Suspected Grindelwald Sympathiser, you are, at best, distrusted by most of Wizarding Britain. Gain the trait Grindelwaldite, you are among those believing that Grindelwald has the right of it and that the wizards need to take their rightfull place in the world and seek to assist him. You have nightmares of Azkaban and are very aware of what will come to pass if you are caught.

( ) The Basilisks

The ideological precursors of those, in a future who might or might not come into being, would name themselves the Death Eaters. The Basilisks have named themselves after the snake of Salazar sigil, which they deem a Basilisks since they consider that the champion of blood purity would never, in their mind, chose a vulgar non-magical animal as his symbol. While their ideas are growing in popularity among purist minded wizards they remain utterly insignificant politically for the moment. You share those beliefs and hope to see them gain in influence. You identify with the Basilisks.

Gain the trait Basilisk, Gain the trait Neutral in the Global Wizarding War, while not directly suspected of Grindelwaldite sympathies you are still something looked with warry eyes by many. Gain the trait Purist Extremist, you believe that Muggleborns and Half-Breeds have usurped the places they now enjoy in the Wizarding World. They should not be allowed to wear wands or attend Hogwarts. These beliefs have made all wizards and witches who are not convinced purists themselves at least somewhat warry of you.

IV. Who you have become and how you firsts years at Hogwarts have unfolded has undoutebly been influenced in no small part by your house. Whether you where Rowena Blue and Bronze, Salazar Green and Silver, Godric Red and Gold or Helga Yellow and Black your house has been your community during the last four years, it has given you friends and rivals and has changed your outlook on the world. Where did the Shorting Hat sent you?

( ) Gryffindor

Honour, valiance, courage, selflessness, the Hat must have seen great potential in all of those things in you for he has sent you to the Lions. In your first four years among them you have made great friends with whom you have lived through numerous adventures in the halls of the castle and have become immensely proud of your house. Moreover, you have also gleefully partaken in your house rivalry with Slytherin, while also coming to approve of its old friendship with Huffelpuff. Often dominated by a reformist ethos your house speak with one voice in favour of the war effort, whatever what a few may think privately, and count numerous few Phoenixes and Lions (the political kind) in its ranks. Whether you share that ethos or not you have spent your first four years immersed among those adhering to it and it cannot have failed to change how you see the world, in one way or another.

Gain the traits Gryffindor, Gryffindor Prefect.
Incompatible with the traits Dragon, Basiliks and Those who Know the Truth

( ) Slytherin

Cunning, ambition, resourcefulness, drive to succeed, the Hat must have seen great potential in all of those things in you for he has sent you to the Snakes. In your first four years among them you have made great friends whom have supported you through thick and thin as Slytherin has become increasingly isolated inside Hogwarts. You are saddened by this state of affairs for you are immensely proud of your house. Moreover, you have also gleefully partaken in your house rivalry with Gryffindor, while also trying to do your part to maintain and repair its old friendship of Ravenclaw, strained by the war and by changing times. Often dominated by a traditionalist ethos, your house is known to be more divided on the matter of the war than any other and your common room and dormitories have the, justified, reputation of being the only place where one could openly talk against the war, and even utter words that might be construed as expressing sympathies for Grindelwald, without suffering social ostracism, at the very least. Whether you share that traditionalist ethos or not you have spent your first four years immersed among those adhering to it and it cannot have failed to change how you see the world, in one way or another.

Gain the trait Slytherin, Slytherin Prefect.
Incompatible with the traits Pheonixes, Lions, Peace Dragons, Those Who Know the Truth and Wizard (The male fifth year prefect for Slytherin is a certain Tom Riddle and he is an NPC).
Need the trait Pureblood as a prerequisite (Tom is a rare exception).

( ) Ravenclaw

Intelligence, originality, creativity, wits, wisdom, innovation, the Hat must have seen great potential in all of those things in you for he has sent you to the Eagles, or the Ravens as some refer to them more informally. In your first four years among them you have made great friends with whom you had many great and good natured discussion and debates. Moreover, you also partook in your house old, and most often friendly, rivalry with Huffelpuff and you might or might not hold on to the equally old, but strained by the war and by changing times, friendship with Slytherin held by your house. Though not as strongly associated with, or dominated by, a particular set of political beliefs then Slytherin and Gryffindor, the House of Blue and Bronze has nevertheless recently began to be seen as something of a haven for moderates. Has they most often hate Grindelwald and support the ministry war effort those few Ravenclaws opposing the latter or suspected of sympathy for the latter have found themselves ostracised by most of their housemates. It remains to be seen whether this state of affairs will persist for more than a mere few years. Whether you share that moderate ethos or not you have spent your first four years immersed among those adhering to it and it cannot have failed to change how you see the world, in one way or another.

Gain the trait Ravenclaw, Ravenclaw Prefect
Incompatible with traits Peace Dragon, Basilisks, Lion and Those who Know the Truth.

( ) Huffelpuff

Loyalty, patience, fairmess, kindness, hard Work, the Hat must have seen great potential in all of those things in you for he has sent you to the Badgers. In your first four years among them you have made great friends with whom you have shared all the good and bad you had to face. Moreover, you also partook in your house old, and most often friendly, rivalry with Ravenclaw and its equally old friendship with Gryffindor. While your house is generally not associated with any specific set of political belief it has nevertheless proved willing to join Ravenclaw in Gryffindor in their general dislike for all those not supporting the war against Grindelwald and those few badgers daring to publicly go against the flow most often find themselves ostracised by their housemates. Whatever beliefs you yourself decided to espouse the absence of any dominant ideological ethos of your house cannot have failed to change how you see the world, in one way or another.

Gain the trait Huffelpuff, Huffelpuff Prefect
Incompatible with traits Peace Dragon, Basilisks and Those who Know the Truth.

V. Your life didn't begin at Hogwarts and what came before doesn't limit itself to your blood status. The circumstances in which you grew up played an important in making you who you are and determining how you see the world. During the winter and summer break you return to the life you had before you turned 11. Who where you then and, to some extent, who are you still now? Who raised you?

( ) Wizarding Patricians

You where born from one of the most fantastically powerful and wealthy family in Wizarding Britain. You have been raised in luxury and privilege but also with the expectation that you will do your part for your house, as families such as yours refer to themselves as, and help expand its prestige and extend its influence inside the halls of the ministry. In an Hogwarts where nepotism is of much importance and in a society where your very name carry significant sway your origins afford you several significant advantages but it also ensure that, you will face the opposition of those disliking your family for one reason or another. Provided you are not among the few wizarding patricians whose ties with most of their relatives have been cut, of course. Your family name will do much to determine how you are seen by others, for the better and for the worse.

Gain the trait Wizarding Patrician. Gain the trait Friends in High Places, you have friends and relatives in position of influence in the halls of the ministry. Gain the trait You are gonna go far Kid, between your family name and being named as a prefect many expect great things from you. Gain the trait Very Wealthy, you have enough galleons at your disposal to pay for whatever you might fancy and help out other, less fortunate, students if you feel inclined to do so. You will gain more specific traits reflecting the special reputation of your family among wizards.

( ) Scions of the Wizarding Upper Class

You might not be from one of the wealthiest and most powerful family of Wizarding Britain but you have nevertheless grown surrounded by the wealth created by a thriving business and/or by the wages earned by high level ministry workers. Should they have enjoyed particular success or luck your parents might have even successfully built ties with powerfull officials inside the ministers, or be ones themselves! Whatever the case, you where raised in the hope you will follow in their footsteps, something you might or might not plan to do. Tough your name is assuredly less ubiquitous in Wizarding Britain then those of its foremost families in power, wealth and prestige it will still carry weight with some and attract the hostility of others.

Gain the trait Scion of the Wizarding Upper Class. Gain the trait The Familly Business, whether you plan to continue in your parent footsteps or not you do know a fair bit on all matters related to their activities. Gain the trait Wealthy, you cannot spend your galleons without care but your family nevertheless possess a rather large vault at Gringotts.
Incompatible with the trait Muggleborn.

( ) Normal Wizards and Witches

Like a large plurality of the human inhabitants of Wizarding Britain your parents where among those managing, serving the customer of and creating product for the shops and other commerces filling the streets of Hogsmeade, Diagon Alley and the mixed communities across Britain where wizards and witches gather. You might or might not wish to walk in their footsteps but your childhood had created in you a certain sense of community and understanding with all those who have grown up in similar circumstances.

Gain the trait Just Another Wizard/Witch. Gain the trait Little Shopkeeper, through your parents you have gained a certain degree of knowledge in the field of they are working in. Will gain the trait Poor, tough by no means destitute you do not have much mean to pay for anything beyond your books and school supplies, Middle-Class, there isn't much to be said about your wealth, in one way or another or Well to do, while not quite coming from wealth you tend to never lack pocket money. (A dice roll will decide).

Incompatible with traits Muggleborn.

( ) Ministry Workers

Like many wizards and witches your parents are among those employed by the ministry to maintain order, the Statute of Secrecy and the institutions Wizarding Britain need to function completely independently from the muggle world. Unfortunately they have yet to rise to a position of real influence in the center of political power of Wizarding Britain, tough they have yet to lose all hope to do so. You might or might not aspire to follow in their footsteps but, if you do, you fully expect to go further. Your selection as a prefect is, at any rate, a promising sign in that regard.

Gain the trait Just Another Wizard/Witch. Gain the trait Little Bureaucrat, through your parents you have gained a certain degree of knowledge on the inner day to day working of the ministry. Will either gain the trait Poor, though by no means destitute you do not have much mean to pay for anything beyond your books and school supplies, or Middle-Class, there isn't much to be said about your wealth, in one way or another. (A dice roll will decide).
Incompatible with the trait Muggleborn.

( ) Normal Muggles

You grew up as a muggle among muggles and your parents where, like a certain family that will eventually live in Privet Drive, proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much. They were the last people you'd expect to be involved in anything strange or mysterious, because they just didn't hold with such nonsense. Of course, when you turned 11 and the strange and the mysterious both came calling. Once able to move pass the shock, your immediate family came to accept who you where, eventually. When you return home you and close your eyes you can almost believe you are what you had once not doubted you where: the most normal of muggles.

Gain the trait Once I tought I was a Muggle. Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions. Gain the trait O Brave New World, perhaps more then any other you have embraced your arrival at Hogwarts as a new beginning and much of who you are have been forged by the last four years, for ill or for good. Will either gain the trait Poor, tough by no means destitute you do not have much mean to pay for anything beyond your books and school supplies, or Middle-Class, there isn't much to be said about your wealth, in one way or another. (A dice roll will decide).
Incompatible with traits Dragons, Basilisk, Pureblood and Half-Breed.

( ) Members of the Muggle Elites

You grew up around scholars, factory owners, bankers, lawyers and, perhaps, even aristocrat and MP's! You came from a family whose name might very well be famous among the muggles but who is unknown to most wizards. While you have entered this new world of yours with gusto and have relished in its wonders you have proved to be reluctant, to say the least, to accept that the very origins you are so proud off are seen as shameful and inferior by some. As a result, and whatever belief you might otherwise hold when it come to wizarding politics, you have grown to dislike purism and the most traditionalist wizards holding strongly to it. They are more then willing to return the favour.

Gain the trait Proud of Your Muggle Roots, Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions. Gain the trait Ennemy of the Purists, you are held in particular dislike by those believing that Blood Purity is all and you return the sentiment. Gain the trait Wealthy, you cannot spend your galleons without care but your family would nevertheless possess a rather large vault at Gringotts if they where wizards.
Incompatible with traits Dragons, Basilisk, Pureblood and Half-Breed.

( ) Parents Unlike Those of Most Wizards
Your parents might have been Muggles knowing of the existence of the Wizarding World, Cursebreakers, Potion Masters, Mazogiologists, Aurors, Magical Herbologists, Professional Quidditch Players or something different altogether. Whatever the case, their jobs have ensured that your childhood was different from those of most wizards, something that has no doubt left a mark in who you are, for the better of the for the worst.
(Will have access to further options to determine your exact background).

( ) Exiles

You are among those unlucky souls who have seen their home countries overrun by a tyrant and who had to flee to escape his wrath. Perhaps it was Adolf Hitler and the Great Muggle War who forced you to abandon your houses, or perhaps your parents where among those who unsuccessfully opposed Gellert Grindelwald. Regardless, you are among the masses of refugees who have found shelter in England and are ever hungry for news, hoping that victories for the Allies or the International Wizarding Confederation will allow you to return home. While you can generally rely on the sympathy, and sometime the charity, of your fellow wizards your situation has nevertheless caused to a bit short on money.

Gain the trait Exile. Gain the trait Anti-Grindelwaldite, you hate the Dark Lord and what he stand for and you fully support the efforts of the ministry to help defeat him. You despise those you suspect of supporting him and held even those professing themselves to be neutral in some suspicions. Gain the trait Foreigner, you hail from a land across the water and still hold to some of its culture. Gain the trait Poor, tough by no means destitute you do not have much mean to pay for anything beyond your books and school supplies.

VI. What is a wizard or a witch without a wand? Since she choose you all those years ago she had been your constant companion, your friend and teacher throughout your time at Hogwarts and your most prized possession. What is her length? What is her core? Of what wood is she made off?

So any ideas for half-breeds?
Giants, Veelas, Vampires, Goblins and House Elves are all cannonically stated to have had offsprings with wizards and witches. Merpeoples, Haggs and Centaurs are not directly stated to have done so but they seem to have kept enough contact with the wizarding world that it would not be unbelievable in-universe so they will be options as well.

It's basically a normal Witch one can see anywhere at the time. What would distinguish her? That's for us to see and do!
We'll see if we'll go from ordinary to extraordinary, I think it is preferable that way rather than start off extraordinary.

Well, and that's something we will explore more in part II of character creation where we will deal more with our PC time at Hogwarts, anybody who was named prefect had to have something to distinguish themselves in some regard.

That said, there is definitely degree to it and I can definitely understand the appeal of starting with a character as normal as possible :)

He would definitely have some character traits in common with him but his experience in Ravenclaw would probably have been massively different. Sully was something of an outcast due to his beliefs and his rivalry with Herc, to the extent that both can be deemed separate things, while that hypothetical prefect would probably have felt quite comfortable with the political tangent his house has taken recently and the unnofficial leadership of its prefects.

Well I'd love to be a Slytherin in the same house as Voldemort. I mean, monstrosities aside, he is a genius and an amazing wizard. Maybe we can be (or more accurately, become) a Grindelwald-sympathiser?

Well, normal as in it fits within the usual standards of what you'll see in Hogwarts, of course.
That comes usually with a particularly smart individual or strong individual, it depends, that got them into such a position. Like in any normal school really.
I just think it all becomes all the more interesting to build your way up rather than start on the top. It's just more satisfying.

Drawing a blank on the wand, sorry.

The character concept is fairly clear I think. Dragon is not necessarily incompatible with half-blood status, especially if the latter means that one of the parents is a muggleborn rather than a muggle. Which goes with the shiny mistery box of "parents unlike those of most wizards.

Sorry, several mistakes with this character, I should not post while so sleepy. Actually I had somewhat blanked out on us being a fifth year Prefect...

Sorry, we're not permitted half-blood slytherins. Why not vote for my Puffwitch?

Thanks for spotting that. "Exiles" should also have been the correct background.

For the moment I prefer to propose a new concept, tomorrow if votes have consolidated a bit, I may switch and your puffwitch would be my first alternative.

Looks good overall, one tidbit tough: wand cores usually came from magical creatures so I am affraid Owl feather won't do :(

A question @phil03
Could a half-blood have both wizarding upper-class parent and a muggle elite parent, or would that fall under Parents Unlike Those of Most Wizards?
I'm imagining someone who comes from moderate privilege on both sides of the divide.
Parents having grown up within the same upscale London neighborhood.

Changed it to Ironwood and Huldra tail. Or is that not a good choice either?
If it would be any other era I would be OK with it but in this instance the Huldra come from Scandinavia, who is under Grindelwald sway since a good while by this point.

Basically, as long as its a magical creature that doesn't contradict canon and isn't from central and Eastern Europe I can approve it :)

Tom Riddle, for now Voldie is only a fleeting tought in his mind. You also posted the background two times.

As for becoming a Grindelwaldite it is very probably not gonna happen for a few reasons. Even for an Old Dragon it would be a big jump ideology wise, the Grindelwaldites don't have much power in Britain and even only serious suspicions of sympathy for him by the school board would probably lead to having your badge taken away (from a gameplay wise I want the PC to be a prefect) and further event will make turning Grindelwaldites an even less attractive proposition on a practical level for a british wizard or witch.

Moreover, and I aknowledge its purely personnal here, writing a character sheet for a Grindelwaldite NPC while I was moding the old RP made me realise I didn't like being in their heads for too long so going there would be bad for my motivation. :(

Wizarding Upper-Class, having one muggle parents isn't all that unheard off. Parents Unlike Those of Most Wizards would probably refer to a situation like Harry's before he got his letter (as in having muggle guardians knowing about the Wizarding World).

Wizarding Patricians could be an option too, as the Bones are an Half-Blood and in this setting are second only to the Blacks in influence and wealth...

Alright, her wizarding side are Americans, who left to Europe because of falling in love with a muggle. So her wand is Thunderbird feather XD

@phil03 So for a half-giant with Parents Unlike Those of Most Wizards, would that mean that they could be part of a muggle circus before finding out that, no, they don't just have an enlarged pituitary gland?

On the flip side, there's a good chance it would mean they'd be semi-permanent guests at London Hospital, like Joseph Merrick was, as doctors tried to figure out what the hell was going on (since half-giants are perfectly proportioned for their size, unlike real life people with gigantism).
