But deeper still, truly, I wished to scream at the man for being so blind he couldn't see the enemies he had within his own academy. People would die because of his inability...and I would do nothing to aid him, not when aiding him meant putting Cinder at odds with Salem, or perhaps even leading to her death.

The world could burn for all that I cared...

...just as long as Cinder and I remained standing upon its ashes

Considering how many stories with this infiltration and double agent stuff involve the damn MC switching sides? Burn away.

Shade is going to do so much double crossing that he's probably going to unintentionally cross himself at some point.

Of course, it's all part of the plan. Sometimes you need to lie to yourself for plans to truly come to fruition. Especially when you want some good views when watching the world burn around you.

Amazing chapter really can't wait to see the rest of the reactions of his team when Wren shows his true colors.
These may be the reaction the rest of the team would face. But these are my guesses so it could go either way.

Jaune would be distraught and have conflicting emotions on his friend/teacher betraying everyone especially more evident if he try's to stop him only to be beaten by Wren in his escape.

As for Yang Wren betrayal would definitely touch her abandonment issue. Though how it will effect I not sure.

Blake is herself might feel she was played by another Adam. Someone who appeared like a decent person only to have their horrid nature come out. Making her at least able to handle Wren betrayal better than her teammates.

I opened my mouth to retort about the unfairness of it all, the lack of light in my life, the despicable cruelty of such a horrifying gesture-and then quietly brought my head down as I began to slowly walk my way outside her room.

"Also, no visitations rights," Cinder added flatly. "Next time I see you talk to Emerald about anything that is not related to an important part of the mission, then I will make it a harder punishment...on Emerald herself."

I shuddered at that. I would get the dog-out-of-the-house or the sleep-on-the-sofa treatment. I had no idea how far Cinder's punishments extended when it came to someone else. I didn't really think she'd be nice about them either, but she wouldn't do anything permanent, would she?
Again even though I like the interaction between Cinder and Wren. It does feel like I'm watching a tragedy unfold which I have no problem with it.

Its a bit funny Wren imprisonment by the WF might have saved Blake from an abusive relationship with Adam by showing her him at his most hateful by him torturing Wren.

Wren himself has fallen into an abusive relationship with Cinder. Like her it mostly being emotional abuse with threats to other people he cares about. But he clings on to who Cinder was when she rescued him after all he went through. With Cinder clinging on to him to as one of the few people who showed her kindness in her life.

Which is a bit like a mirror on the interaction of Blake and Adam in the Dc comics. But so far unlike Blake he never left and unlike Blake has no desire to partly due to clinging on to Ashleyn.

I kinda hope he doesn't leave her. There isn't anything inherently wrong with writing a reluctant villain who stays a villain because of love.

Could go tragedy and have Cinder be killed off during the fall of beacon. Shade would loose it and take over Cinders responsibilities for Salem. Bonus points if its a Schnee that kills her.

Chapter Forty-One
Chapter Forty-One

I stepped into the headmaster's office expecting an execution squad. I did not get it.

Headmaster Ozpin was standing very calmly at his desk, fingers crossed together and a pensive expression on his face. I nervously looked at him, and made an attempt at a smile.

"You set an appointment for me, headmaster?"

He nodded and pushed a button. The holographic display from his desk showed my face, my personal details which I had given Beacon Academy, and a log of my Scroll's latest traceable activities, among which one was highlighted in a crimson manner.

"Mister Night," Ozpin spoke quietly, "You missed the return bullhead last night, is that correct?"

"Ah, yes," I acquiesced, nervously nodding. "I was...well, I don't know what might get me out of this pickle that sounds nice," I chuckled, and then remained quiet.

"Silence is an option," Ozpin remarked, "But the truth is, sometimes, better."

"I...I got drunk," I said in the end. "After the event of the Breach, I got really drunk. I passed out and then, well, I woke up and it was too late for the bullhead back, so I had to walk."

"The walk was quite long," Ozpin said, "But I suspect it might have worked in freshening your spirit up for the fight, it was quite a majestic display of skill and strength."

"Thank you, headmaster," I answered, awkwardly.

"And yet you will not continue on to the semi-finals? Miss Xiao-Long and Miss Belladonna have been chosen instead," he turned thoughtful, "I would have theorized you would have been part of the couple meant for the second battle of the tournament."

I shook my head. "I don't like fighting for sport," I muttered, "I find it wrong. Like...like it cheapens the act of what fighting the Grimm is all about. I can understand it's about showing sportsmanship with the kingdoms and everything else, but I still don't like it."

"That's an interesting, and quite wise, view," Ozpin said with a nod, "Still, there is the matter of your punishment for not returning in time for Beacon's curfew. While I would be more than happy to dismiss this issue, Deputy-Headmistress Goodwitch might not like it," he made a sympathetic smile in my direction, "You will have to take extra-curricular activities to make up for your lack of forethought."

I gave a sheepish smile and a slow nod. "I understand."

"Also," Ozpin added, "Might I add how incredibly fortunate you were in avoiding the unpleasant situation at the docks with the White Fang?"

I blinked, then sighed, "I thank my lucky stars about that," I said. "Wouldn't have been much more than a skewered piece of meat if I had ended up drunk near that fight," I shrugged, "drunk me is no fighter at all."

Ozpin's lips twitched. "You understand there is little to fear in coming forward for having fought and stopped a high-ranking officer of the White Fang, do you?"

I grimaced, I didn't like that line of thinking. It meant he knew. Or perhaps he suspected, and needed some proof. I didn't like either options. "I only know that it's best to keep one's head down, always." I crossed my arms in front of my chest. "I don't like trouble; doesn't mean I'm not going to fix it when I have no other choice."

Ozpin raised an eyebrow. "Would you care to elaborate? Our conversation will remain confidential, if that is where your worries lie, Mister Night."

I took a deep breath. "It's just-after the Breach, I didn't really think the White Fang would let things lie down," I grimaced. "We went looking for them, I'll admit as much, because someone I know was invested in them-"

"Miss Belladonna," Ozpin said, and I looked away.

"Someone," I stressed out. Ozpin made a small smile. Not being willing to sell one's teammates out was definitely a plus in the reincarnating old man. "And yet I...I have experience in how criminals work," I clicked my tongue against my teeth. "I don't like talking about it, but...I knew the White Fang wouldn't let us be."

"So you took the initiative and went looking for them," Ozpin said, "And you found them within the span of a single night? There is one such thing as being skilled, Mister Night, but also at being too skilled."

"I have some peculiar knowledge on how the White Fang operates, Headmaster," I said with another, longer sigh. "They...they have a few bases in Mistral, and I had the unfortunate displeasure of being their guest for a while in my youth," it was the truth, and the emotions that flared across my face were the most honest of them all.

"I won't ask for more details on that, then," Ozpin acquiesced. "I will simply ask one last thing," his eyes settled firmly on mine. "Are you a threat to your teammates, Mister Night?"

"No," I said with a shake of my head. "I'm not."

"It is quite the unfortunate thing for General Ironwood then," Ozpin mused. "He wished to know who dealt with Adam Taurus to reward the brave huntsman, though I suspect he might have been more insistent on the interrogation."

I chuckled nervously, "Thank you for being considerate of me then, Headmaster."

"As you will, Mister Night," Ozpin acquiesced. He eyed me with careful consideration. "There is also a substantial reward-"

I shook my head. "I didn't do it for the money, just to make sure my teammates were safe," I smiled amiably at that. "So...I guess I'll have punishment with Miss Goodwitch?"

"Indeed," Ozpin said. "You will receive further notification on your Scroll about where to be and when," he added.

"By the way," I said as I made to leave, "if we're talking about rewards, there's the special edition hot chocolate from Vale's top patisseries from what I heard. I wouldn't mind if, just by chance, we could get that for the morning hot chocolate at breakfast."

Ozpin chuckled. "I will attempt such a thing, if Beacon's budget permits it."

I kept a smile on my face as I got into the lift, and then kept it up even as the doors closed and I made my way down.

One tale to the ruler atop its lofty tower,
one tale to the lover within her bedchambers,
one tale to the friends by my side,
and one final tale to tell myself, to make it the greatest of lies.

My eyes went to the hallway's windows as I stepped out of the elevator, and as I glanced at the white clouds hanging overhead, I started humming. A couple of Atlas' ships were in view, patrolling the skies for some attack that wouldn't be forthcoming.

Perhaps Ozpin might convince the council to call them back now that the White Fang had been even more harshly defeated, or maybe Ironwood would manage to convince them that only their presence made it possible to deal with the White Fang resolutely. Whatever the reasons they'd find, those things didn't matter to me anymore.

I grimaced as my eyes caught the sight of white hair, the figure of Weiss walking through the corridors of Beacon with Penny by her side. The grimace became a small smile when she noticed my presence, and as I gave her a wave, she returned one with a half-hearted expression.

I furrowed my brows at that. "Is everything all right?" I asked as she came to a halt in front of me.

"Yes," Weiss said, sounding anything but sure. I arched an eyebrow, "Just-nothing."

"Miss Schnee is perfectly healthy!" Penny piped from Weiss' side. "All of her needs are accounted for!"

Weiss sighed even louder, "Penny," she said, "Why don't you get me a glass of water from the kitchens?"

"Unfortunately I cannot," Penny answered, sheepishly. "I have been told that bottled water will suffice! I have one such bottle on my person at all times, as well as protein bars should you feel peckish, spare articles of clothing, a full set of culinary utensils-" as Penny's list grew longer and longer, I glanced at the petite frame of the android girl in question.

"Where do you even pack all of those things?" I asked, puzzled.

"A girl never reveals her secrets!" Penny answered back, hiccuping, "Because I am definitely a human girl with a really large backpack!" and then she hiccuped again, turning around to show a small backpack on her back.

"If you say so," I said offhandedly. "I'm Shade, by the way. We never did get around to properly greet each other."

"Salutations, Mister Shade Night. We did not greet properly, but I have acquired information on your person. You were born in Mistral eighteen years ago, blood type B minus and-" as Penny rattled off sensitive information which I assumed was part of my cover, Weiss' eyes widened and her face turned a pasty white.

"P-Penny!" Weiss yelled, "That's-Don't say that!"

Penny cocked her head to the side, "No? But keeping private information of someone else to myself is wrong, as you previously-"

"I did not!" Weiss blurted out, the whiteness of her face now turning crimson from the heat, or from anger, probably. "I did not tell you that!"

"But-"

"B-But nothing! Just be quiet! You're giving me a headache!" Weiss said snappishly, and Penny's lips tightened to a close.

"Oh," I said softly, "I'm sorry," I added with a sad look in Penny's direction. "Somehow I feel it's my fault you're fighting with one another."

"There's nothing to apologize for," Weiss said, "I'm just nervous, and Penny's...well, she's Penny." Weiss sighed. "I've been dealing with some...pretty hard news, and I thought I could use a distraction or two."

"So you went for a walk around Beacon?" I mused.

"Surprisingly, it gives me more freedom than any other option," Weiss bitterly acquiesced, her arms crossing in front of her chest as she looked downcast. "I watched your fight," she added, "You made the fighting look easy."

I smiled at that, "Your fight's tomorrow, isn't it? I'll cheer for you."

"If I do anything worth cheering, it will be the day," Weiss muttered under her breath. "When we meet as foes on the tournament, I'm expecting you not to go gentle." She grinned at that, and I awkwardly chuckled back.

"I'm-I'm not in the semi-finals," I said, watching with quite the curious fascination as Weiss' eyes widened in surprise, her mouth half-opening in shock. "I don't really like the idea of huntsmen fighting other huntsmen, so I told my teammates I really didn't want to fight and they accepted it."

"What!" Weiss blurted out, "That's-but you're clearly the strongest! Don't you want to win?"

I shrugged, "Winning or losing a tournament isn't anything to be bothered by," I said, "Fighting the Grimm or risking the loss of one's life, now that's something I consider way, way more important."

"That's..." Weiss stumbled for words, but then a small smile seemed to settle on her lips. "If we can fight, then we should. That's how we can make the world a better place, no?"

I grinned at those words, "Indeed! We fight for those who can't, for if not us, then who?"

"Knowing I won't have to face you in the finals makes me feel at ease," Weiss said, this time smiling with a bit more of honesty behind the emotion.

"Oh? Well, then as long as you're not fighting one of my teammates, I'll cheer for you when the time comes," I said with a grin.

In the meantime, Penny looked from Weiss to me, and then back. She kept a smile on her face, but didn't speak a single word.

As I bid them goodbye and made to leave, I began to hum once again.

It was a simple tune, but I dimly realized that Weiss had remained still by the hallway, watching me as I left. I feigned not having noticed that strange halt, and kept my walk, and my humming, happily ongoing.

When I returned to my team, Jaune had tears in his eyes.

"S-She said she hates me!" Jaune bawled out, sniffling loudly.

I belatedly realized that Yang's eyes were now on me, narrow and attempting to deliver the subtle message of 'You did this. Now fix it'.

"I didn't do this!" I said hotly, then I turned towards Blake. "Blake suggested asking! So, clearly, she's the one who has to fix this!"

Blake's eyes widened, just like the cat being caught with the paw in the marmalade jam.

"I-Well, I did say that," she said, most valiantly and resolutely, "But Emerald could have been gentler about letting Jaune down."

"Well, yeah, are you sure she said she hates you, Jaune? That sounds a bit too harsh-just how did you ask her?" Yang asked back.

"I-I met her in the hallway, waved at her and then popped the question!" Jaune said.

"How, exactly, did you pop the question?" I mused, stepping inside our team's room and closing the door behind me.

I was prepared for everything.

Unfortunately, I wasn't prepared for the Winter Nation attack.

It's good to see the return of this. It's honestly my favourite of your three Wren Schnee fics.

I note that Salvatrix, the lightsaber plasma sword, has yet to come into play. That is going to be a very nasty surprise for whoever ends up on the wrong end of it, and I can't help but feel it will either show up during the grand betrayal, or if and when Wren tries to get Cinder out from under Salem's thumb.

Say, something I forgot to ask about before, but why did Wren lie to Cinder about Adam holding him capture before and torturing him and all?

Because that would reveal that he is someone important. Someone schnee. That might make cinder split herself up on using that as leverage and keeping it a secret because shade seems wanting to stay as shade instead of wren schnee.

Also, because shade is a compulsive liar in the fiction (and maybe out of it too)

Not to mention the possibility of Salem finding out via her parasite.

Not the Winter Soldier, eh? Also Shade... Tempting fate and secrecy isnt going to end well. Realize it as well that compared to the previous two this is more classic Shade. It took his monologue in killing Adam to slap me in the face with it. He didnt acclimate well compared to the two.
Looking forward to how things turn out. He's got the odds stacked heavily against him but Im kinda nostalgic that he's in Beacon all things considered.
Family reunions OH NO in this case.

Chapter Forty-Two
Chapter Forty-Two

I felt cold. My contrite expression was probably visible from a thousand miles away, because even Jaune-foot-in-mouth Arc didn't say a word about my long face. My eyes were constantly glancing in the direction of Cinder, who had seated herself at the far end of another table, with Emerald and Mercury by her side.

My expression of longing was both a clear signal of repentance and also the hope that the punishment would soon be over with. Never before had we been so close, and yet also so far. Whether Cinder relished in it or not, it was clear by the way she would every now and then chide Emerald with a click of her tongue that she wouldn't tolerate any relenting on the punishment.

I sighed. My eyes moved away from Cinder with difficulty, settling on the cringing face of my teammate. He really wanted to say something, but apparently Yang was holding her foot down on his own, keeping him from saying a single word about it.

"How about some training to clear our minds?" Blake suggested, "Yang and I have come up with a few combination attacks we're going to be using."

"Sure," I said with another dreadful sigh escaping my lips. "Let's go then," I flipped through my Scroll, checking the arena's availability. "Someone already beat us to the punch for this time slot, but the next one's free in ten minutes."

"Someone went training during breakfast time?" Yang asked, puzzled. "They really must want to win this. Not even Jaune's training starts this early!"

"That's because I like my beauty sleep," I quipped dryly back, even as Jaune yelped in disapproval.

"H-Hey!" Jaune grumbled, "I got better!"

"That's why you no longer get woken up at eight on a Sunday, but at nine," I helpfully pointed out.

"Geez, thanks for the extra hour of sleep on a free day," Jaune said with a huff.

The training arena was occupied indeed, judging by the noises that came from within, it was quite the fierce battle too.

"You call that a riposte?! Again!" the voice was cold, and by itself gave shudders down my spine. The place wasn't locked, and as we quietly made our way inside, my eyes settled on two white-haired women, one quite viciously tearing into another's guard.

Winter Schnee's skills were truly second to none; and on the other side Weiss was barely holding on. Some blows she really didn't see coming, and judging by her aura, they didn't come gently either.

"It's unacceptable, Weiss," Winter curtly continued, "Your guard must be up at all times!"

I saw the swing come, felt it in my own bones actually, and then watched Myrtenaster fly in the air and land sharply in front of us.

Weiss looked, if anything, even further ashamed as she cradled her wrist while realizing we had come in just at the end of her 'training'.

"It appears our allotted time has come to an end for now," Winter said, coldly gazing at Weiss with something akin to displeasure, mixed with a harshness I couldn't really place. "You have gone too soft. Do not expect your past training to aid you with the tournament if you let yourself go." She clicked her tongue, and then sheathed her own weapon before walking out, not deigning us with a word, or a glance.

"Who was that bitch?" Yang asked, even as I gently pulled Myrtenaster out from the ground and walked towards Weiss to return the weapon.

"My older sister," Weiss said, "She-She means well."

"If that's her meaning well, I don't want to know what she's like when she doesn't," I remarked as I handed Myrtenaster back. Weiss took it with a small nod of gratitude.

"Winter is very strict," Weiss muttered, "But it's only because she cares."

"If you say so," I said with a faint shrug, "You definitely know her better than any of us."

Weiss appeared ever so slightly shaken still, but it was Yang who took the cue. "Hey, want to stick around?" she said. "I'm tired of always beating down on Jaune, and we're both going to be in the semi-finals anyway." She grinned. "Some friendly sparring prior to the competition won't hurt, will it?"

Weiss' lips twitched slightly. "I-I wouldn't mind that, but I need to catch my breath for a while."

"That's fine," Yang said, "I can start by beating Jaune up-"

"Hey!" Jaune exclaimed, "You're making it sound like I won't fight properly back!"

Yang shot Jaune a look, arched an eyebrow, and then smirked. "Then show me what you're made of, and maybe I'll change my mind."

I snickered at that, and then glanced at Blake. "Guess we'll be fighting one another then?"

Blake arched an eyebrow, but then nodded. Fighting Blake was like playing a game of Whack-a-cat, where the cat in question was incredibly nimble, agile, and sometimes turned the whacking into an explosion of sorts. I wasn't putting my all into the training, of course, or I reckoned I would have been able to easily hit her more than once.

Still, after a while Weiss joined in, and I took a break by sitting on the arena's bench. Penny wasn't present, which was strange, but I reckoned with Winter nearby, there wouldn't be a need for the android girl. At the same time, Winter was no longer present, and there was no trace of Penny to begin with.

Was this a small concession of sorts, unspoken and never to be mentioned?

I barely had the time to turn thoughtful about it that Jaune was sent flying by a fully powered shot-gun blast from Yang's Ember Celica, "Why do you keep hiding your face from your enemy!?" I groaned loud enough for him to hear me.

"Because I don't like being punched in the face!" Jaune retorted.

"You wouldn't risk being punched if you dodged!" I snapped angrily back. "Shield for the body, dodging for the face!"

"But she's fast!"

"So are bullets, but you can dodge those too if you practice!" I grumbled back.

To make an example, I pointed to where Weiss and Blake were actually fighting one another, the former avoiding the gunshots from the latter, and the latter avoiding with grace the Dust attacks from the former.

"See? Be like them and you'll have a shield, and an innate ability to dodge," I remarked with a chuckle.

"He's not built for that," Yang said with a smirk, "But if you're done resting, why don't you take his place and get a beating?" she grinned and flexed her fingers in my direction.

I chuckled and then descended from my spectator spot down into the arena.

Such simple, happy moments would probably become tender memories to reminisce once Beacon fell.

Training with one another, aiding one another, laughing with one another-a small part of me died every day, and dug itself deeper every hour, but that was the way of the world.

Yang and Blake had nothing to fear for their dual fight.

They'd emerge victorious, as was proper.

Yet, what puzzled me was the other double-fight.

Emerald Sustrai and Mercury Black would face off against Weiss Schnee and Penny Polendina.

That...was unexpected.

Unexpected, and terrifying to behold.

I live in Alabama, can confirm the state is filled with inbred idiot rednecks.

I was in a high school history class and one student didn't know where Japan was.

it a island in the Pacific I think?

This like most of shade writing is a train wreck that I cannot look away from.
a weirdly fitting song I been listening to as I read this.
