A Realm Divided

For the last eighteen years the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros have known peace under King Aerys II Targaryen. After the defeat of the last Blackfyre in what became known as the War of the Ninepenny Kings, the realm has recovered growing strong and prosperous. Being one with high ambitions, Aerys replaced many officials in his court with younger men, including naming young Tywin Lannister as Hand of the King.

Aerys boasted many plans and schemes over the years. Going from invading the Stepstones and Braavos to making a underwater canal in Dorne and building a new capital city of marble. While Aerys came up with grand plans his Hand, Tywin, kept the realm prospering, becoming a brilliant administrator in his own right. It was Tywin who settled the dispute with the Iron Bank of Braavos in 267 AC and repealed all the laws, rights and protections that were granted to the smallfolk by King Aegon V Targaryen. Slowly Aery's began to regret appointing Tywin, with many believing it was Tywin, not Aerys, who truly ruled the realm.

As the years went on Aerys and his sister-wife Rhaella would know nothing but tragedy suffering many stillborns or early deaths of their offspring. Only Prince Rhaegar living so far to be the King's heir. Because of this Aerys began to grow to believe that Rhaella had been unfaithful to him, even ordering that she be confined to Maegor's Hold as well as having two septa sleep with her in her bed to ensure she would remain faithful. Aerys also began to distrust Tywin, where previously Aerys had heeded Tywin's counsel, he now often disagreed with his Hand and did the opposite of what Tywin suggested. Slowly King Aerys II grew increasingly violent, suspicious and erratic, willing to have someone killed with the simplest slight.

In 276 AC the realm rejoiced with the birth of Prince Viserys, a healthy boy. Yet Aerys' paranoid grew and saw that no one saw the young prince without members of the Kingsguard present, including his own wife. In 277 AC an event took place that would shoke the kingdoms. Lord Denys Darklyn of Duskendale, wishing for a charter for his hold and after refusing to pay his taxes to the crown captured the King as he arrived to personally setting the matter. The incident became known as the the Defiance of Duskendale and would see the town besieged by Lord Tywin with a Royal Army for six months. It was through a brilliant infiltration by Ser Barristan Selmy that the King was rescued and set free.

Lord Denys immediately surrendered and begged for mercy, instead Aerys had him beheaded. The king then ordered House Darklyn utterly destroyed, along with House Hollard as they had sided with Lord Denys as well. Every last member of both families was tortured at excruciating length before being burned alive.

The Kingdoms continued to grow with families growing, roads old and new being built or repaired, great harvests feeding the people and so on. Yet in the capital things were not as they seemed. Following his imprisonment, the King refused to leave the Red Keep, lasting for the next four years. His suspicious nature deepened into total paranoia and eventually outright delusions, seeing treachery everywhere. He went so far as to believe that Tywin and Rhaegar had conspired to have him killed by storming Duskendale, so Rhaegar would ascend the Iron Throne and marry Tywin's daughter.

To prevent any conspiracies Aerys summoned his old childhood friend, Lord Steffon Baratheon, to court and made him a member of the small council. Aerys sent Steffon off to Volantis with the mission to find a bride for Prince Rhaegar of whom was of "proud Valyrian blood". Many rumors fly that Aerys intended to replace Tywin with Steffon, causing more tension between the King and his Hand. However Lord Steffon failed in his mission and even drowned off the coast of Storm's End on his return. The madness of the King Aerys grow, for he thought that somehow Tywin had assassinated Lord Steffon. The trust between the two was forever broken.

In early 279 AC Prince Rhaegar was betrothed to Prince Elia Martell of Dorne and early the next year the two were wed in a lavish ceremony at the Great Sept of Baelor. While happy his son was wed, the King did not attend the wedding fearing he would be assassinated. After the wedding Prince Rhaegar and his new bride left King's Landing and took up residence on the island of Dragonstone.

Thus this in mid 280 AC we found a Kingdom facing uncertainty as their King continues his descent into madness, rumors of betrayal and deceit at all corners, and many wondering if Prince Rhaegar shouldn't sit the Iron Throne instead of his father.

The Eyrie

A map of the Vale of Arryn
About the Vale of Arryn:
  • The Vale itself is also one of the most heavily forested Kingdoms in Westeros, with only the North and the Stormlands rivaling the amount of wood the Vale can produce. Rivers, creeks, streams, and forest trails dot the landscape as castles emerge from the misty valleys and tend to reside in the foothills of great mountain ranges while towns and villages occupy dense forested valley floors below. The Vale is also known as the "Hermit Kingdom" by many Westerosi who reside on the west side of the Mountains of the Moon in the Riverlands due to its incredibly isolated nature and unique Andal-oriented culture.
  • Springtime in the Vale is perhaps the most popular season in the Kingdom, known for the festivals held in various towns and villages, as well as the two largest festivities, the Grand Toruney of Gulltown and the Feast of the Falcons in the Eyrie, hosted by Houses Grafton and Arryn respectively. The Highroad opens for the first time in what usually is years in Spring, and overland commerce, travel, and trade between the Vale and the rest of mainland Westeros resumes once more usually within a month or two after the arrival of ravens bearing messages of the end of winter.
  • Summers in the Vale are warm and known for rain in the foothills of the Mountians of the Moon as well as the far eastern coast, while the forests of the Kingdom shade the vast majority of the towns and villages from the hottest of days. Travel is most common in Summer though bandits and highway men roam the roads of the Vale most often during this season while the notorious Mountain Clans decend from their mountain settlements to raid unsuspecting smallfolk and even vulnerable Lords and Knights.
  • Autumn in the Vale is most famous for the wide array of colors the woods display. Occasionally, forests in the Vale shine in oranges, reds, yellows, and browns for years on end until the season turns to winter. The final great harvests are done across the Vale as the first leaves begin to fall in the great forests that dot the landscape, and many Lord host Harvest Moon celebrations to mark the completion of the final growing season before winter. The days tend to be mild while the nights are chilly. The foothills of the Mountains of the Moon are known for snow in this season and the Highroad often closes due to snows in Autumn, only to re-open again in Spring.
  • Winters in the Vale range from mild to harsh, with great storms from the Narrow Sea smashing the Fingers and feet of snow fall across the mountain ranges of the Kingdom. It is not uncommon for snowfall to equal the height of the tallest of men in some parts of the Vale during winter. While snowfall is quite common across the Vale during this season, the rivers of the Kingdom rarely ever freeze over even in the hashes of winters due to the protection the Mountains of the Moon offer from the coldest of fronts coming down from the Bite and the North.
House Events: @Skrevski
  • Ser Elbert is now a man and the whole of the Vale eagerly awaits who his wife will be.
  • Ser Donnel Arryn and his wife Jyana Lipps have just tragically died to a Mountain Clans raid. Ser Denys, the Keeper of the Gates of the Moon, has vowed revenge and has given gotten a grant from Lord Arryn givign him the right to begin raising the a keep on the northern coast of the Vale to begin mounting punitive raids. The keep itself will be named Blackholm. (1/4) In addition plans are being for a mountain road running from the Vale to Heart' s Home, Strongsong, Snakewood, Coldwater, and this new keep to make it easier to strike against the clans. (1/5)

The mountainous port of Gulltown, the largest city in the Vale and fourth largest in Westeros

Economy: Good

  • The Vale is located on the eastern shore of Westeros, a land of fertile soil, rivers, and lakes, protected by the largely impassable Mountains of the Moon, the largest mountain range in Westeros. The Vale tends to be slightly isolated from the rest of the continent, and harsh winters in the foothills of the great mountains make travel to the rest of Westeros via land only possible during warmer years. Furthermore, rebellious mountain clans make travel into or out of the Vale by land even more dangerous. Luckily, the sprawling port of Gulltown, as well as numerous other ports along the Vale's coastline such as Wickenden in the south and Old Anchor in the north continue to provide access to the markets of the world.
  • Wheat, corn, and barley is grown in the Vale. Not even in Highgarden do the pumpkins grow any larger nor is the fruit any sweeter. The valley of the Vale of Arryn is perhaps one of the largest and most fertile lands in all of Westeros. Even during the heart of winter, with the surrounding peaks of the Mountains of the Moon encased in snow and ice, food can be grown and exported from the Vale. Additionally, the Vale is the largest exporter of wool to the rest of Westeros, thanks to large scale sheep farming along the Fingers and the foothills of the Mountains of the Moon where traditional agricultural goods are harder to grow. Agriculture however is not the only product the Vale is known for. House Waxley is known for producing scented candles in Wickenden, and these candles can be scented with nutmeg and other costly spices. The Waxleys have perfected the art of candle-making and thus command a near-monopoly on the market across the entire Seven Kingdoms.
Military:

Knights of the Vale

  • There are currently at least 27 principle noble Houses sworn to the Eyrie, with numerous smaller knightly Houses and vassals
  • While the Vale has a moderately sized army, her natural borders easily makes her one of the most defensible Kingdoms in all of Westeros, if not the most defensible. One of the world's largest mountains ranges, the Mountains of the Moon, divides her from the rest of the Seven Kingdoms. Here, Shadowcats prowl the mountain passes, rock slides during summer and avalanches during winter are all but common, and the mountain clans, while having been driven from the Vale Proper, still reside in the highest peaks of the Mountains of the Moon. The foothills of the Mountains of the Moon are rocky, high and wild, and each one of the dozens upon dozens of peaks that form the Vale's natural borders with the rest of Westeros are snow-capped even during the hottest of summers. The nature of the Mountains of the Moon make bypassing them to be impossible as well, as the mountain range curves around the Vale to follow her northern and southern coastline. Only when one reaches the coastline of the Narrow Sea does the range begin to taper off. The only road to and from the Vale by land is the Highroad which runs through the Bloody Gate, arguably the most heavily fortified chokepoint in all of Westeros.
  • The Bloody Gate is a legendary fortification guarding the entrance to the Vale. The most natural mountain pass runs through this crucial chokepoint, as does the only road connecting the Vale to the rest of Westeros. The Bloody Gate has withstood hundreds of assaults over the millennia, and has since been expanded to become one of the largest fortifications in all of Westeros. Considered to be an "intact Moat Cailin nestled in the mountains", the Bloody Gate can be held with just a few hundred men, though when fully manned the fortifications can house several thousand. Ser Joffrey Arryn currently serves as the Knight of the Bloody Gate.
  • Most castles of the Vale are built utilizing the mountainous landscape, and even the smallest of fortifications provides a defender with a crucial tactical advantage. Most siege equipment cannot be used in the Vale, as hauling ballista or catapults up mountain sides and along narrow cliffside paths is all but impossible. Since the Andal Invasion, it has been boasted that none of the castles strewn across the Vale have ever been breached.
  • True to the defensive nature of the Vale, the Eyrie is commonly boasted to be "impregnable". Defended by the Gates of the Moon below, as well as three waycastles (Stone, Snow, and Sky), the Eyrie is by far and wide the most easily defensible seat in all of Westeros, albeit the smallest of the Great Castles.
  • The Valemen are known as reliable warriors steeped in honor and the worship of the Faith of the Seven. As such, chivalry is considered strongest in the Vale out of all the Seven Kingdoms (save perhaps the Reach). Only the Reach boasts such strong Andal traditions.
  • Horses are used extensively throughout the Vale due to the terrain.

From Rickard Stark

Private: Jon, we must consider your nephew's marriage carefully. Perhaps it would be wise to wed him in the Riverlands to further bind them to our common interests. A Mooton or Whent maiden would be excellent, though Lysa Tully would be even better. If not the Riverlands, then perhaps one of the great lords of the Reach.

OOC: Elbert was a big friend of Brandon Stark - how do we explain that friendship?

I have received an offer from the Tullys actually. But I do want to consider my options to make sure he has a wife worthy of him. Remember he is all that remains of my brother and the closest I will ever have to a son.

OOC: Friendly Rivalry. As Jon's heir he's expected to uphold the ideals of Westeros chivalry while Brandon is a skilled fighter in his own right. And of course Ned would likely mention his brother and his skills at some point. The idea the two would try to one-up each other whenever they met seems to be inevitable.

House Tyrell of Highgarden - 280 AC

Name: House Tyrell of Highgarden
Head of House: Lord Paramount Mace Tyrell
Heir: Willas Tyrell
Religion: Faith of the Seven
Words: "Growing Strong"
Seat: Highgarden

Family Tree:

Highgarden, Legendary Seat of the Lords of the Reach
  • Highgarden is surrounded by three rings of white stone whose walls increase in height. Between the outer and middle walls is a famous briar labyrinth which serves to entertain as well as slow invaders. The oldest towers, squat and square, from the Age of Heroes. Newer towers are tall and slender, round fortifications dating from after the Andal invasion.
  • Also within Highgarden's walls are groves, fountains, and courtyards. The sept is matched only by the Great Sept of Baelor and the Starry Sept. The castle's godswood contains three weirwoods known as the Three Singers. The palatial keep is decorated with statues and colonnades. The castle's structures are covered in ivy, grapes, and climbing roses.
  • Highgarden is filled with flowers, singers, pipers, fiddlers and harpers. The stables have a fine selection of horseflesh, and there are pleasure boats to sail along the Mander. There are fields of golden roses that stretch as far as the eye can see. Fruits grown nearby include melons, peaches, and fireplums.
Household:
Lord Seneschal: Garth Tyrell
Castellan: Quentin Tyrell
Master-at-Arms: Vortimer Crane
Captain of the Guard: Igon Vyrwel
Maester: Lomys
Knights: Ser Mark Mullendore, Ser Bayard Norcross and Ser Hugh Clifton

Current Season: The Eternal Spring of the Reach (Winter for Everyone Else)
Economy: Prosperous

A Map of the Reach, detailed with crests of the major Houses and their Seats within the Kingdom

  • The Reach is the most fertile part of Westeros and has numerous and well-populated villages and towns. The Sunset Sea is found to the west, while the hills of the Westerlands are to the northwest and the Blackwater Rush of the Riverlands is to the north. The Reach borders the Crownlands to the northeast, while to the east and southeast are the Stormlands and their Dornish Marches. South of the Reach are the Red Mountains of Dorne and the Summer Sea. The Roseroad links Oldtown with King's Landing by way of Highgarden, while the Ocean Road links Highgarden with Lannisport.
  • The Reach is watered by the immense river Mander and its tributaries, including the Blueburn and the Cockleswhent. The Reach proper is centered around the Mander. Oldtown is located at the mouth of the Honeywine. The region also includes several islands, including the Shield Islands near the mouth of the Mander and the Arbor south of the Whispering Sound and the Redwyne Straits.
  • The Reach is the second wealthiest region in the Seven Kingdoms behind the Westerlands, but it is the most fertile region. Among the products it produces are melons, fireplums, peaches, apples, and grapes. The Arbor is said to make the finest of wines, from dry fruity reds to a rich golden vintage. Woodharps made in Oldtown are highly sought after.
  • The Reach is considered the home of chivalry in Westeros. It is the place where knighthood is looked upon with the greatest reverence and esteemed the most. It is also the place where the rules to tournaments are the most stringent and managed.
  • Notable houses of the Reach include Ashford, Caswell, Crane, Florent, Fossoway, Gardener, Hightower, Merryweather, Mullendore, Oakheart, Redwyne, Rowan, Tarly, and Vyrwel.

Military:

  • The Reach is the home of mythical warriors and knights such as Serwyn of the Mirror Shield, Davos the Dragonslayer, Roland of the Horn and the Knight Without Armor.
  • The Reach is the heart of the chivalric tradition in the Seven Kingdoms, the place where knighthood is most universally esteemed. Tourneys here have the most elaborate and varied rules, and are the most likely to be held for knights only. The greatest champions of the Reach became knights in the Order of the Green Hand.
  • Dornishmen have warred against the Reach for thousands of years; rivalries include the feud between House Oakheart and House Dayne. The Kings of the Reach also warred with the Storm Kings of House Durrandon, gradually conquering land from the western Stormlands. However, King Garse VII Gardener was slain by King Argilac Durrandon in the Battle of Summerfield. The Dornish Marches, the lands just north of the Red Mountains of Dorne, have long been disputed. The lords of Highgarden count Defender of the Marches amongst their titles, although most of the marcher lords now owe allegiance to House Baratheon of the Stormlands.

My son and heir Baelor remains unwed. Even at his young age my son is known to be handsome and has a splendid reputation. With his marriage to Cersi we can unite the Seven Kingdom's wealthiest houses in marriage.

The children of such a union would want for nothing and in the Hightower Lady Cersi will enjoy all the trappings of wealth she has grown accustomed. A bright future and the birth of an economic powerhouse unseen on these shores only awaits your consent.

Private, Seperate

I believe that much good can come if our Houses are joined in marriage. What do you say, my lords?

From: Lord Walter Whent

Lord Deremond, my daughter Wynafrei is four and ten and of age to be wed, I am willing to see her wed to one of your sons. I would hope it to be your eldest.

From: Lord William Mooton

Lord Darry, I am afraid I have no daughters to be wed at this time, but if and when I do have a daughter I hope that we might come to an agreement in the future?

From: Lord Renfred Rykker

My Lord Darry, I find your proposal to be a very good thing, would you accept my daughter Annara in the hand of marriage for one of your sons?

Dramatis Personae
The Most Handsome King Around

King Aerys II Targaryen, called the Fair for his stunning good looks

---

The King on the Iron Throne, Aerys the Second is everything that the Realm could desire from a Targaryen. Handsome to a fault, just observe how his luxurious beard gets knotted and tangled and has turned yellow after months without bathing, ever the dashing and chivalrous figure, trials by combat are the norm for it allows the Seven to judge the trials themselves (though Fire always seems to win), and so wise and witty that all cannot help but laugh and gush at his jokes and cunning plans, Aerys is truly the greatest king the Realm has ever had. Even the Defiance of Duskendale, perpetrated by a treacherous up-jumped whore and her spineless husband who dared laid hands upon the mighty, magnificent ruler of the Seven Kingdoms, has failed to dim his majesty with Aerys emerging from the incident wiser and with a tighter grip on his sanity than ever before.

Yes indeed, everything is just peachy with Aerys Targaryen and please ignore the screaming...that's just traitors engaged in trials by combat with vats of wildfire.

The Inexplicably Morose Queen

Queen Rhaella Targaryen sporting this season's hot new look, "My Husband Is An Abusive Monster, The Kingsguard Who Are Sworn To Protect Me Watch Him Beat Me, Please Save Me, Anyone, Please"
Mother to Aerys Targaryen's two only son, the lovely Prince Viserys who is, at age four, already the best Prince the King could ever desire and infinitely better than any other hypothetical sons plotting to overthrow their father because he's jealous of all the attention said father gets because he can never hope to compare with said father's greatness, Rhaella Targaryen is Aerys' sister and consort in true Targaryen fashion. Carrying herself in a manner befitting a Queen, which is to say inexplicably sullenly with occasional bouts of weeping despite having the love of the fairest man in all the Seven Kingdoms, Rhaella's life is a private one with the Queen rarely making public appearances. Instead, Rhaella spends much of her time within the Maidenvault alone with her ladies-in-waiting and helping to raise her son, Viserys, whose upbringing has largely been left to his mother with Aerys' busy schedule only permitting him to teach him of the important things like FIRE AND BLOOD AND BONE AND DEATH the history of House Targaryen and proper morals.

She also needs to smile more, Aerys is quite confident of that though his advice has yet to be taken for some weird reason.

The Benevolent Pyromancer

Wisdom Rossart Demonstrating The Virtues of UNLIMITED POWER!!!!

---
A Wisdom of the Pyromancer Guild and by far one of the wisest men in King's Landing, something which has been proven by how quick Aerys is to praise said wisdom, Rossart has the unique pleasure of being the King's closest adviser, the manager of his prize champion, Wildfire, and also helping Aerys with getting in the mood for lovemaking by setting people on fire for the quick romantic fix. Owing his position to his knack for burning all the things, he once even helped his family get over the plague by cleansing their bodies with fire because he's that nice, Rossart is a common fixture in the Red Keep and by far one of the most influential men in the Seven Kingdoms.

He's also really good at burning people alive if I haven't mentioned that yet.

To: My Royal Mother
From: Prince Rhaegar

I miss you mother. Would father allow you to visit me on dragonstone. Elia has yet to get with child and I fear that she finds the castle too grim for her tastes, her Dornish kin cannot make the journey in good time so I fear you are the only family she can rely upon.
