[] Stay awake. See this through. This isn't over yet.

You held on. Despite your own body protesting, you got a grip and forced yourself awake. No passing out yet. This was far from over. You could smell the fear coming from the officers vacating their seats. The guards had their weapons readied and primed towards Vania, they showed no signs of standing down even as she stepped forward and manifested her magic.

The winds howled from the cabin losing pressure, stifled only by the slow regeneration of the outer walls of the bridge. The commanding officers took a second to get out of their initial shock before they recognized who Vania was. They immediately raised their voices, booming commands out loud and through their terminal.

"Stand down! All of you stand down!" the Fleet Commander ordered as the nearby guards lowered their weapons. The armored guards stood alert keeping an eye on Forte's Dragon as it snarled at them while they stepped back.

Vania turned to the man who had gotten his men to lower their arms before she vanished into a swarm of bats before anyone else could react. She appeared before him and shoved him back on his seat. The officer by his side drew her gun but he raised his hand.

"Stop! I said stand the fuck down you'll get me killed!" he snapped as he kept his eyes on Vania.

The vampire gave him a cold look and said, "You're smart."

"Your Majesty, I-" he began before Vania's wings turned into a scarlet pike looming over him.

"Why are you in my territory? Who authorized your movement?" Vania questioned him with a deadly tone, "You have three seconds."

"We were given information from the Slayers' Guild regarding a conspiracy among the Vampire's Ranks. We have approval from several of the standing Noble Households that supersede the Queen's-" the Commander began explaining before Vania lowered her wing more and more, "Your Majesty-!"

"While the Noble Households do have the authority to provide you access through our lands in the scenario I am absent or incapacitated, that still does not give you full autonomy to do as you please with armed Airships within my airspace," Vania cut him off as she leaned forward, her crimson gaze staring right at his soul, "That's all you could do, in fact, that's the clause I approved myself. But that aside... This movement from your Fleet can be considered an act of war."

Kifa's eyes widened from beside you, "What... Is she doing?"

Rudolf whistled, "Oh my... That's definitely a move."

Their words could only be heard by you but you somehow got it. Gallus was betting on Sardekheim somehow instigating an incident that'll give them free reign on how they dealt with Vania's Kingdom. This whole conspiracy which led to Vania's Capture by the traitor Nobles could have been one way of them sweeping the whole board of Sardekheim's position.

If things went their way, then they would have been unhindered in their occupation. But right now, if Vania declared war on them on the grounds she's stating then the other foreign powers would have no choice but to step back or support Sardekheim's protest for this incursion.

Gallus might have the bigger gun but they wouldn't think twice dropping this fleet to avoid prey that fought back. At least not until a better opportunity presented itself.

The commander must know this too as he weighed his options.

"We... Had no intention of overstepping. Our sole purpose is to quell the growing chaos within Sardekheim's city proper and provide aid to the fleeing residents," the commander said as sweat slid down the side of his face.

Vania remained unconvinced before she turned the officers and stared at them instead.

"Call them off," Vania whispered.

The commander stared up at her and gasped as he blinked, "Your pardon?"

"Get out of my city," Vania spat as she turned her gaze back at him, "I want someone's head for this. Pray that it isn't yours."

"Your Majesty, without the authorization from command we-" the commander continued only for frost to build up on his hand.

Vania turned to see Kifa walk up to him and speak, "You should do what the scary lady says. Otherwise I'll be the one to lose my patience here. You've already caused an international incident and got Gallus' shoes dirtied."

"W-who are you?" The commander asked as he found himself unable to leave his chair any longer.

"She's my friend. An adviser," Vania explained as she and Kifa loomed over the man, "She's far better at bureaucracy than I am..."

Rudolf crossed his arms and sighed with a smile as Forte dismissed her mount and stepped forward. She then knelt by your side and helped you up. The air in the room remained tense but your party seemed to have relaxed slightly even with how things were at the moment.

"She seemed surprise by the Queen's actions but Kifa seems to have taken to the course quite well," Rudolf said as he crossed his arms.

"If she's going to be Queen herself she has to follow someone's lead. Vania isn't exactly the best but there's no denying she's still royalty," you managed to say as you hung on to Forte.

Your body refused to move. It was simply taking all you had to stay conscious.

......
.....
....

In the end, the Slayers and remaining loyalist Royal Guards were able to quell the chaos. The Gallian armaments deployed to the ground were called back and ushered out of the city as the citizens rallied to shelters set up upon Vania's return.

She quickly took control upon appearing among her subjects, ignoring the strange looks she got upon her disheveled appearance. There would be much to explain but right now she had work to do.

Kifa was with her, given her past experience her budding start to becoming royalty, the Erheni moved alongside Vania to quickly get the city under order. Thanks to the quick response from Vania, the skies were able to return to peace and the criminal elements lurking under Sardekheim have been quelled for the time being.

Because of this, the Florence was able to make to dock once more and refurbished. You currently laid on the bed of your room within the airship, body refusing to heed your command as you found no strength left in you.

You heard a knock on your door and you let out a groan.

"Come in. Just don't kill me," you groaned as you placed your forearm before your eyes.

You heard the door click open and swing before closing, footsteps walking up to you as you recognized the person's smell.

"Vania. Shouldn't you be out there working?" You said as you pulled down your arm to meet the girl's crimson gaze.

Your eyes widened to see that she had a difficult and sad expression on her face. She was better dressed now, some colour returned to her skin but the way she was fidgeting and not meeting your gaze told you a few things even as you laid on your bed.

She stood before you in silence as you felt for your spirits. They seemed to be staying out of the vicinity to give you some privacy. How considerate of those three...

"Got something to say?" You asked as you cracked a small smile.

"I'm sorry," Vania whispered as she balled her hands into fists.

Was she still not over her problems? It shouldn't come to a surprise that things wouldn't get settled overnight but...

"Look, I already forgave you. Not that it means much coming from me but-" you said but Vania cut you off.

"I... Can't come with you this time," Vania continued as she lowered her head.

Huh...

There a lot to atone for, and this isn't a bad place to start.

Dead Ends
[] "So... We're not journeying together again. Huh?"

You let her words sink in for a moment before you managed to find the strength to push yourself from lying down. Vania gave you a worried look a you glanced her way. You found yourself smiling as you looked at her. She seemed better looking than earlier, more groomed and better dressed compared to when you found her.

In contrast, you looked downright dreadful. You felt like a small gust can blow you away. Fortunately you were secured in the Florence so no devil dust would get you blown out just yet.

Still, it seemed like Vania's decision bothered her. It wasn't that she was doing this to do the right thing but because this decision was definitely what she wanted. Now it's eating her up inside, her desire to be with you tugging at her own wants.

"So... We're not journeying together again. Huh?" You guessed as you cracked a small smile.

"I... Doesn't seem so. I have work here. So many things I need to do. Things I should have done years ago. I'm sorry. I can't run from this, not anymore," Vania said as she shook her head, "It might be too late but I should at least act my station and not some broken hearted girl."

"You're acting tough but you can't fool me," you told her as you shook your head.

Vania stared at you before lowering her head, "I'm sorry. I wish I can help you. I really do but..."

"I know. You don't have to apologize. You've done enough apologies for a lifetime. Maybe more. But we can't rest yet. We still need to find Tamamo and Nagi, they're out there somewhere. Not only that but there's Kifa and her throne too. We have to make it to Rumekheim but we can't go without her racking up more glory," you explained as you shook your head.

Vania nodded and said, "I'd put a good word but I doubt the Nobles at Rumekheim would accept an heir to the throne endorsed by the mad Queen of Sardekheim."

"Right. So do what you can now here. Your people need you and it seems like you have quite the road ahead," you told her as you smiled at her.

"Marcus. Thank you for everything," Vania smiled at you with tears gathering in her eyes, "This is goodbye..."

"Yeah. At least until we meet again," you replied as she stepped towards you and gave you a hug. She felt... Good.

Soft and gentle, she gave you a brief embrace before going against her own body and releasing you. She didn't even try to wave goodbye as she left your room. She must have been holding it together for you.

You fell back on your bed with a groan.

.....
....
...

You walked out into the deck to find that the repairs were in their final stages. The crew had resupplied the Florence's munitions and had done inventory on the remaining cargo meant for Silver Lake City. You managed to make it to the railing when someone walked up to you. You turned to see Captain Jade walk up to you with her hands behind her back.

"Should you be out and about like this?" she asked with concern in her tone.

"I'm asking myself too but I can't take that room anymore. I need to breathe," you sighed as you shook your head.

"The Queen came by earlier. Did you have a fruitful talk?" Jade asked with an amused look.

"Sort of. I didn't take you for the nosy type. This recent incident spooked you from carrying us?" you asked her pointedly. Any normal person would be hesitant to carry your group further after this.

"I didn't realize I was carrying dangerous cargo in the first place so the scuffle with the Guild was on me. No harm, no foul with you though. I'd say this little stunt brought us some renown," Jade said as she crossed her arms, "Though, this makes the second little fun trip we've had with your merryband. Why I'd say, we'll be expecting more in the future?"

"If you stick with us, most likely," you replied as you sighed.

"The Vampires have paid us a hefty sum for repairs and reinforcement for the Florence, due compensation for delivering the Queen to the Gallus Fleet earlier," Jade nodded as she whistled, "I'd say it's a pretty sweet deal although..."

You frowned as you turned to look at her, "Got something on your mind."

"The Gallians are becoming bold. It'd be wise for you to do whatever it is you have planned. Especially with your Erheni friend, Marcus," Jade said as she met your gaze.

"I... Right, yeah," you replied as you turned your head down.

"Rumekheim, right?" Jade said as she placed a hand on her hip.

"Did Kifa tell you?" you asked with a surprised look.

"She came clean. Though it surprises me that this little transport airship managed to carry two Royalty during its service. Not to mention whatever Forte is. Consider myself honored... Although there is troubling news," Jade said as she looked to the side before stepping closer to you, "Rumekheim found themselves a Yaga."

Your eyes widened before you turned to her, "A... Yaga."

"The Scarlet one. The Hero Killer. She appeared in the midst of the Holy Cardinal's Mass and tried assassinating him. Though there were witnesses that saw her blade sink into his chest but she was ultimately restrained by him in the end. If you're headed for Rumekheim, you're wading straight for the storm," Jade warned you as she raised her hand and walked away, "Things are just going to get more turbulent."

The Florence's engines were lit and the crew had taken off gangway connecting to the air dock. You watched the buildings move away from the ship as it descended into the controlled path for airships above Sardekheim. The Florence's barriers were raised and it was finally in full airborne.

"You sure you didn't need to say goodbye?" Kifa asked as she glanced your way.

"Nah. If I tried, she'd end up coming with us," you told her with a small smile, "She's one of my oldest friend still around. She's needed here."

Kifa stared at you before nodding, "You're right. If it were you of the past, you'd offer her to come, no doubt complicating things. Besides, don't you have a good team already?"

"I'd say so," you sighed.

"Don't be like that, you'll make me feel bad too," Kifa said as she crossed her arms.

"Suit yourself," you chuckled as the two of you looked on to the distant castle.

Farewell Vania.

Farewell old friend.

Marina opened her eyes to find herself chained to the ground. It seemed like she failed to take the bastard out. She was alone in her cell, the ground cold to her skin as she let out an annoyed breath. She couldn't use her magic nor connect to the outside.

It was like she was blindfolded and had her ears covered at the same time. It was no different to feeling nothing at all, to be deprived of her senses. Yet here she was, staring at the ground as she gathered herself.

This was bullshit. But she supposed that this was only par for the course. She did do something incredibly stupid. She just didn't expect that man to be particularly gifted in countering her. A leech to Maya's cult no doubt, an anomaly not born from the Reincarnators that have cropped up.

Then she heard footsteps.

"Oh it's you. Come to gloat?" Marina scoffed as she blinked and got a better look, "Oh? Oh my..."

Marcella turned and looked through the cells. She was somehow battered and beaten. Her Armor marred by signs of battle. The untouchable Paladin had not escaped her quarry unscathed.

"Pfft... Pfhaahahahahahahaha! Oh god's, don't tell me... don't tell me she fucking got you?!" Marina laughed as she held her stomach. That's hilarious. Did this bitch underestimate Marcus? "Hahahaha! Oh... Oh my... Don't worry. She does that to me too."

Behind Marcella, Marina saw the Spirit that always followed her around.

The Spirit's eyes were open... And she glared at Marina in contempt.

Almost immediately Marina was slammed into the wall by Holy might, golden gauntlets pinning her against the wall.

"Gah... So rough... Getting mad for her sake? Why bother? You host's a-" Marina began before the gauntlets faded and she dropped to the ground.

"Enough," Marcella whispered.

The Spirit frowned but did as she was told. She held her hands together in prayer before vanishing.

Marina coughed and held her throat. That Spirit was bad news...

"Do you think she can do it?" Marcella asked.

Marina blinked and raised her crimson gaze, "What do you mean?"

"She told me... She told me that everything that's happened... They're not mistakes," Marcella said as she rested her hand on her sacred sword.

Marina smirked, "Do you really believe the crap she said? You? Don't tell me... You're gonna start hoping again?"

"No. I've made my choice. This is the Dead End," Marcella said with a solemn tone.

Marina stared at her other self... At a much older, more broken version of herself....

"I can't stand looking at you. But I suppose the feeling is mutual," Marina said as she shrugged.

Marcella turned to her and said, "You never answered me straight. Do you think... She can overcome this Dead End?"

Marina stared at her long and hard... She's really hung up about this. Marina can't help but wonder what happened between her and Marcus. But then again, the Witch thought about it too.

She's had her run ins with the stupid blue idiot so she had her own guesses. So she decided to humor the stuck up Paladin with her own reply.

I kinda want to do both to be honest, but I don't trust Marcella not to go out assassinating all our friends with the former.

I mean, she kinda already tried that to a degree, but...

[] "She's surprised me once. She can do it again."

Marina cracked a smile and said, "She's surprised me once. She can do it again."

Marcella grimaced as she glanced at the Witch, "Isn't that what we do when we were her age?"

"Indeed. Except this time, we're both blind since this is a new branch. I'd say kick back, enjoy the show," Marina replied as she did just that. She crossed her arms and continued, "Though I doubt you can even sit with that massive stick up your ass."

Marcella raised her gaze and stared down at Marina. The Witch felt her skin tingle at the slightest brush of the Paladin's magic. Oh she pissed her off this time. However whatever retribution Marcella had in mind never came. Instead, what Marina received was a soft whisper from the girl on the other side of her prison bars.

"I know where your friends are... And I'm going to kill every last one of them," Marcella whispered as she stared down the Witch, "Unless you offer us anything substantial, I'll serve their heads to you on a plate."

Marina's crimson eyes began to glow as she cracked a smile, "You fucking bastard."

"You're an anomaly yourself. You were fated to fall a long time ago. But instead you created a branch of your own. While Marcus' path is set, yours rings hollow. Trust me, you wouldn't want to find out where you end up next time," Marcella warned.

"Next time?" Marina scoffed as she held back her own temper, "If Marcus does her job right there won't be a next time. And I'll laugh when it's over... Laugh as you fuck up one last time, while I jam my sword RIGHT THROUGH YOUR BEATING HEART!"

Marcella frowned and turned away, choosing to walk as she left Marina roaring behind her. She's shaken that fool enough, she had no need to be here. Marina continued yelling at her as she left only to be silenced by the door shutting behind her. A sigh left her lips before she noticed someone nearby.

A man in a hooded robe walked up to her before promptly stopping.

"High Cardinal," Marcella greeted as she glanced to her side, "Why are you here?"

"I came to see you. You did not report as soon as you've returned," the Cardinal said as he glanced at the door behind her leading to the jail, "Come to visit her? I'm surprised she was your first stop."

"I heard you caught her. I wanted to see her for myself," Marcella replied as she raised her gaze, "Let's leave. The air here is suffocating."

"Very well," the Cardinal mused as he walked by her side, "So, you failed."

Marcella was silent for a bit then. They managed to get out of the dreary halls leading to the jail. It was only when Marcella walked out into the building's inner courtyard did she stop. She looked up and stared at the blue skies, wholly different to what she was normally used to. She can't help but wonder what the High Cardinal wanted with her.

The blue haired man simply kept his distance as he watched her, patiently waiting before she turned to face him.

"I did. She was prepared this time. I will not fail again," Marcella assured him.

"Even with all the weapons and armor we've given? A simple Star Eater escaped your wrath?" the Cardinal chuckled as he crossed his arms.

Marcella frowned and glanced at him, "Did my sister have any complaints?"

"The Great Ruler has turned her attention to where her body resides. The other side has its fair share of troubles. This is an unprecedented occurrence compared to the cyclical nature of this world. I think it's because the old world you both came from has begun to change that this one has begun to take its first step in a very long time," the Cardinal replied.

"About time too," Marcella said as she placed a hand on her hip, "If you can, tell her something for me."

"I'd be glad to. Our Great Ruler's own sibling, you alone are the one she has embraced among the countless failures," the Cardinal said as he bowed, "I'd e delighted to carry your message."

"Tell her to stop fucking around," Marcella said with a cold tone, "Tell her to get her doomsday machine order before it all falls flat and explodes on her face. I didn't live this long just to get dragged in her incompetence."

The Cardinal stared at her then with an equally icy look, "You would do well to refrain from speaking out against our Lady would bring about untold misfortune."

Marcella scoffed as she faced him, "Then get her to show me results."

"From one who failed to fell your weaker self? You're joking," the Cardinal chuckled as he shook his head, "You cannot impose upon her Lady without providing your own victories. I've served her the Yaga, you failed to kill Sardekheim's Queen."

"Vania is no longer an issue. The Authority of Omnipotence is no more. Not at least until another successor is found. Killing her was not in the cards," Marcella declared as she grit her teeth.

"Technicalities," the Cardinal sighed.

"Maya doesn't care. The only thing I failed in was killing the Demon," Marcella snapped as her Spirit reappeared behind her, hands clasped together in prayer before turning to look at the Holy Man, "And I will not fail again. The curse we've inflicted is eating away at her even now."

"And with such a curse, she's still managed to fend you off. A poor showing on your part, Lady Marcella," the Cardinal said only for golden swords to surround him all at once. The Spirit was looking at him in disdain and Marcella made no move to have her Spirit stand down.

The Cardinal kept his smile and said, "Killing me will earn you nothi-"

Marcella's eyes narrowed and the swords all plunged down, skewering the man from all sides. The blades then burned with Holy fire, scorching the Cardinal where he stood until he was nothing but ash.

"Very well. I'll deliver your message," the Cardinal said with a sigh as he suddenly appeared with no warning to the Paladin's side. Her eyes darted to him as she grit her teeth, "Her Lady protects her most faithful. Not even your Holy Swords could break my Faith. I bid you good day. Your next mission will be sent to you shortly, do make use of this time to rest."

Marcella watched him disappear into the shadows, fully leaving her alone. Her Spirit lowered herself to her side and placed a hand on her shoulder. The Paladin raised her hand and rested it over her Spirit's.

"I know. I hate him too," Marcella sighed as she glared after him. She turned and left the sunlit yard, her glimmering armor shrouded by the shadows as she entered the shade once more.

.....
....
...

You opened your eyes with a groan. You held your head and grimaced as you managed to push yourself up and sit on your bed. Sweat was rolling down your cheeks as you let out a shaky breath. You held a hand to your forehead and felt it throb. Headache, you were feeling a little woozy. You haven't eaten anything and the pang of hunger shook your core.

It was just normal hunger. Not the dark, creeping dread that normally rolled within your body. You just needed something to eat. Some actual food. You're not sure how long it's passed since you passed out again but you felt like you needed to get up from where you were. You made your way to the door and unlocked it.

You could hear some people moving about above deck as you felt your senses open up to you. The smell of people, their voices ringing in your ears, the heartbeats of your party whispered to you of their good health. Everything was fine...

Nothing was on fire.

You can relax.

Nothing can hurt you here.

You allowed yourself to calm down and make your way to the kitchens, following the smell of food till it led you to where you should be.

"Come for some food, huh?" the burly chef spoke up as he walked up to you, "Well, dinner was awhile ago but we've got some spare meat for you. Not sure if you demon folk prefer that but no skin off my back. Take a plate and some wine."

"Ah, thanks," you managed to say as the chef helped you gather up some food before he gently pushed you out of the kitchens so that him and his apprentices could continue their work. Seems like steak was on the menu tonight, you hungrily took a bite from your marinated meat slab and chewed as you headed back to your room.

You'll have to return the plates in the morning. Still, you felt like you were being sated bit by bit. You've pushed yourself over and over through this journey, farther than you ever could imagine yourself going. That was the only time you pretty much were intent on burning the candle of your life out.

You felt it then, it was like your entire being was becoming undone.

You reached your room and decided to finish your meal there. You drank the wine you carried back with you, washing down the after taste of the steak you just ate and sighed. You could smell the faint hint of cinders which made you look ahead of you.

"Come out," you whispered.

The air grew hot as it blew past you. You were then greeted by the sight of Orthus with her arms crossed, eyes staring down at you.

"You're getting better at noticing others," Orthus said as she raised an eyebrow.

You gave her a small smile, "Thinking about our deal?"

"Now that our little detour is over I suppose I should remind you of it. I would not have cared once but you earned your rest now," Orthus said as she crossed her arms, "Your Spirits are smart to stay out of this."

"How considerate. Still, let's talk then. What brings you here?" You asked her with a frown.

"It's regarding the Underworld and the Hells. As you know, I'm a venerated guardian much like my sister Cerberus," Orthus said as she turned to pace before your bed, "While my power may have been stolen from me, I still find myself being connected to the events occurring in the underworld. As such, I've come to you with a warning."

"What is it?" You asked with concern.

"They've turned their attention towards us. The Usurper who stole my might. She wants something... I... I feel that she's going to start hunting us from now on," Orthus said as she rubbed her arm. She looked distressed, almost panicked.

You've never seen her like this before. Orthus could be cruel, savage and sadistic, but in her helpless state she's become far more nervous. Even with your strength aiding her, you could feel her lack of confidence she once possessed.

"Why? Did we do something?" You asked her.

"The Authority of Omnipotence. The vampire Queen's might. It's a power born of an accord between the Vampire Lords and the Kings of Hell," Orthus explained as she turned your way, "The residents of the Underworld have taken interest in the person who allowed such a power to be relinquished from its current host. Meaning they've turned their gaze towards you, Master."

"Just for doing that? I didn't even do anything. Vania chose it for herself," you told her.

"Indeed. But your infamy will grow and such things will eventually draw the gaze of others," Orthus said as she placed a hand on her hip.

"So what? If they're coming for me then we'll be ready," you said as you straightened up.

Orthus stared at you before tilting her head slightly, "What do you know of the Hells, Marcus?"

"Um... Not a lot actually," you admitted, "Well, no. To be honest I don't know anything at all."

"It's where Demons came from. Our race," a voice piped up behind you. You and Orthus glanced to the side as Iza showed up with her hands behind her back. She had a small smile and said, "Sorry, I was listening."

"No offense taken. Better you than the other two," Orthus said before she glanced at you, "But yes. It is where the race of Demons and their many clans came from. The Hells and it's layers are located in a plane reverse of this world."

"It was a place which preceded the rise of the Lords... Kept separate from this plane by the might of the Lords and when they were struck down by the Slayer, the two worlds were able to make contact," Iza explained as she floated above you, "But such contact brewed conflicts."

"A war between this world and the Hells brewed. Humans, Erheni, Dwarves, Elves and Holy beings waged war against the emerging Demons and their clans, the Kings of Hell responding with bloody fury as chaos reigned for thousands of years," Orthus continued as she sat down on your bed side, "People waged death, betrayal and treachery. The night creatures, the vampires and witches conspired with the Hells while a few Demonic clans sought to be ruled by the overworlders to escape far more crueler Hell Kings. One of the boons the Kings gave the vampires is the Authority of Omnipotence the royalty carried with them, the same one you have in you right now."

"My mom and dad told Nagi and I stories of our people's past. Though that's separate from our clan as Star Eaters," Iza said as she nodded.

"The underworld which is the domain I reside in is said to be the frontline in which the Hells and the Overworld fought, turned ashen and cold as it became the pool in which dead souls gathered," Orthus explained further.

"And that's why it's the Underworld?" You asked her.

"A remnant of the earliest war in history. Where the earth's riches are hidden and the souls of those dead wander for eternity," Orthus said as she held up her hand, "I was a Guardian to prevent the souls wandering into the Hellfire of the Kings. I punished the damned and judged the guilty... Until I found myself in the state I'm in now."

"The Usurper. You never did tell us who they were," Iza pointed out.

Orthus made a difficult expression before snarling, "Charon. That's her name. She's the one who took my flames... And reduced me to what I am now."

"And she's after us now... For her own curiosity?" You asked.

"Yes..." Orthus paused as she swallowed before turning to you. She leaned forward with a pained look, her gloved hand resting on yours, "And she's coming for you. Possibly to pluck what remains of Vania's gift from your chest."

......
.....
....

The skies were clear and you were on your way to Silver Lake City. The detour of Sardekheim was long behind you and there didn't seem to be any sign of the Gallian fleet following their retreat. Kifa and Vania made sure they ran with their tails tucked behind their backs.

You leaned on the railing and stared at the open sky, remembering Orthus' words.

"What's on your mind?" A voice asked before you noticed Kifa beside you.

Her ears twitched as she glanced your way with her one eye, "You look like you have the weight of the world on your shoulders."

"Oh well... I do have it sometimes but nothing too serious. Okay well that's a lie..." You said as you scratched your cheek.

"Come on. Talk to me," Kifa urged you with a raised eyebrow.

"Well... Orthus talked to me last night," you told her slowly.

Kifa seemed surprised by that, "Huh. Never thought I'd see you two get along. So? What is it?"

Into the Storm
[] "Well, she just told me that my being here might endanger everyone. Again."

You wracked your brain as you leaned on the railing, "Well, she just told me that my being here might endanger everyone. Again."

"Oh. Good. Not too unusual for us then?" Kifa noted as she crossed her arms, "I do have a feeling we're being watched."

"How long until Silver Lake City?" you asked as you turned to her.

"Well, barring any problems that may stop us, a day or so. We have swathes of land to cover. That's not to say the journey beyond towards Gallus territory," Kifa said as she shook her head.

"You know, you're filling the role quite well," you told her with a small smile.

"Role?" Kifa asked with a surprised look.

"Yeah. Leadership role. You helped Vania a lot navigating through the aftermath of that mess. I appreciate your efforts and I'm thankful for you helping her. A familiar face she could rely on was what she needed," you explained as you smiled her way.

"I suppose you could see it that way. I didn't do much. I just had more experience dealing with Royalty thanks to some idiot princeling that went off to run his crumbling kingdom," Kifa sighed as she shook her head, "It just worked out this way."

"And yet you could have told Elisa to fuck off," you pointed out with a hum.

"I did. But at the same time, I do feel like I need to do this. Cooped up in that mansion doing nothing, managing checks and balances has caused my sense of adventure to get bottled up," Kifa stepped back and stretched her arms, "It's not so bad now that I look back into all of it. I probably could have been less of an asshole to Tamamo."

"She's out there somewhere. You don't need to worry," you told her with a nod.

"I'm not! I'm just... Being nostalgic is all!" Kifa groaned as she scratched her head, "Honestly, you just had to make it weird."

"Look, it's all right if you want to say you miss your mom," you replied with a low chuckle.

Kifa stared at you before her shoulders fell, "I do miss her. Spent so much time with her, now I can't help but think about her. These past few months have helped me... Come into terms with the things she did."

You blinked before turning to face her, "That's... That's very good Kifa. Wow."

"I don't have to like it. But I get it. I just don't know what to do if I see her," Kifa said as she rubbed her arm. She then glanced at you, "You... Think you can help me out when that time comes?"

"Kifa, you're my friend. Of course I will," you answered as you smiled her way, "Besides, Tamamo's my friend too. She's likely taking care of Nagi too so I'm gonna be grateful to her once we all meet back up."

"Then we better get to ground and link up in Rumekheim then," Kifa said as she placed her hands on her hips, "I'm counting on you for that."

"Yeah, you got it," you nodded.

"I've got places to be. Don't fall over now," Kifa said as she waved goodbye and left. You could feel the wind pick up then as you crossed your arms. She was sure in a good mood. Far better than when this journey started. Nagi and Tamamo were still out there and there's no telling where they were.

You just hoped that they were going to Rumekheim the same way your group was. All the more reason to hurry things up too...

Though as fate would find it, it seemed that things weren't going as smoothly as you'd hope.

"Storm's ahead!" the crew men yelled as they rang their bells and got to their stations. You watched as the Florence's barriers were raised and the engine roared to life in anticipation of the coming storm.

You were a bit confused as you saw people running around though you did try and get out of their way as much as possible. You walked by the corridors in the Florence and found Forte with her arms crossed looking out the nearby window. She turned to you, nodding your way as you stopped by to greet her.

"What brings you here?" you asked in surprise.

"Storm. It seems like we'll be needed," Forte replied as she gave the rumbling clouds in the distance a wary look.

"Something wrong?" you asked once more as you saw her expression.

"The sailors were speaking something about possible Raiders using the storm as cover to target us. With Sardekheim's instability and the Gallian forces' retreat from the region, criminal activity would find a ship like ours particularly enticing to attack."

"I... See. You seem happy about that," you pointed out, noticing the faint glint of excitement in Forte's eyes. She looks at you as if trying to mask her reaction but it was too late. You already noted how her breathing seemed different now that you pointed it out.

You should probably tease her.

"Happy? You're imagining things. Why must I find happiness at the prospect of an enemy attack?" Forte asked as she looked around, the cracks on her flesh glowing somehow. Was it through her emotions? That's a pretty funny thought.

"We have been cooped up here a bit. Granted we were just fighting for our lives a day ago, a little exercise here and there definitely keeps the spirit up, don't you say?" you said with a small smile.

Forte stared at you before grimacing, "So... It would seem... I felt like I could have done more in the battle. In the end, people we've met still died. I find myself lacking. I am uncertain if this is because of the corruption in me or my own weakness. I find myself thinking if I am worthy of going on this journey at all."

She has her self doubts... And regrets. The guilt of her past deeds haunts her much like Vania's sins clung to her.

"You're disappointed. Not exactly how you pictured starting your atonement, huh?" you noted as you placed a hand on your hip.

Fort's expression turned difficult and said, "Indeed."

"There's plenty of times left to prove yourself. Even then, Forte, you don't have to prove yourself to anyone. If you ask me, you're doing fine as you are," you replied with a nod.

The Dragoon seemed surprised by that before you felt the Florence shake.

"We're under attack! Battle stations!"

"Fire up the engine room! Get the barriers up! Everyone keep everything not bolted down the hull in one piece!"

Forte straightened up and said, "It seems like we're needed. My guess was correct then."
