A Life of Coin. (A Warhammer Fantasy Mercenary Quest)

Most fights are won by tactics. In a adnd 2e game I was told by Dapper himself that shields are considered old fashioned. They also take TIME to have a wall worth shit with training.
In that game I had shields to protect my expensive ass guns. And help cover the pikelines after charge and where they failed.

It's fine to not have them. Depends on your strat.

If we're up against an enemy that bows work well only but only have four we might be toast too, for example.

As mercs we either do adventuring shit or we are hired with other mercs bands.
We aren't big enough to not do adventuring shit with a balanced spread.

By adventuring shit I mean like, go clear a village, investigate x, etc.

Also, keep in mind this is Warhammer. Brutal by ttrpg standards. It's VERY possible after all the time and money spent on these dweebs they become useless after the first fight. Morale break too badly.

Why are the spear guys in the Mace plans not equipped with shields again? Spears only need one hand in this quest's Google doc.
According to a earlier post, spears if wielded with both hands are able to attack from the 2nd rank.
Warhammer -> Reduce Armour Save by 1 (makes it harder for someone with armour to avoid damage)
Spear -> +1 Rank of Engagement if TWO HAND WIELD
Helberd -> STR+1 (Increase the chance to wound someone, high strength means we deal more damage or it is easier to apply a wound in the first place)

If you click any of the weapons or armour or purchaseables in general, you can get a drop down which tells you special rules. See here.

Ah, so that function isn't working for me on mobile, which explains why I know not the specific weapon rules. It's definitely a bit different from the tabletop, then, if that is how spears work.

What about crossbows or bows and arrows?
The idea is that the spear/warhammer line is its own independent entity led by the Captain. The Elites and Skirmishers are their own groups too, to be directed by the Sargent where they're most needed.

Standard formation probably looks like skirmishers to the front, our light infantry behind them, and then elites to the very back.

Skirmishers harass the enemy, move back when they close, and then flank once lines are engaged. Elites sit back and only commit if they see a opportunity, or if they need to reinforce our line.

Truth be told, I'd go for a full crossbow spam (the most famous weapon of a merc outside the pike), but it's a bit too late to think about it now.

It really depends on what we'd be doing. More likely we'll not be doing traditional war drafting forming an army with other merc specialists coming together, and even if we are the opponents are going to be likely monsters in this setting. Different rules. Different worries.

Ideally we become large enough a band to change specialty out as needed. But right now, we might be doing the equivalent of adventuring. What are crossbows gonna do againsts trees in the shadow forest that waited to grab you when you ain't looking?
