2025 - Or, How I Learned To Stop Worrying and Use More Boosters (Co-opEmpire Builder)

We are well beyond the kickstarter(lol kickstarter) stage.... We're already in the black while printing parts.
We could still use the Kickstarter to fund manufacturing of 3D printers for many more units and drive the price down so that the costs are more accessible when we hit the market.

A example I can give is comparison between a auto-factory and a helicopter manufacturer. There are many more cars made and prices to buy one vehicle compared to a helicopter is a lot cheaper.

If we really need to expand faster to lower unit costs, we can court investors after the press release and schematics are ready for viewing rather than deal with printing toys selling our proprietary, bleeding edge 3D printing technology to anybody that wants it.

Metal, motors, circuit boards - the full size version can print a whole Dragon V2 in a couple of days.

Yeah, you guys can go ahead and make up plans if you like - saves me having to write options if you already know what you're going to do :p
if there are any new options from having hired the specialists, it would be nice to see those. but otherwise it seems the plan is 'double up on press release, and have R&D/engineering do the same thing they did last time'

The only new option you've got from either of them right now is "Investments" from your MBA. The PRO has some good stuff with her, but most of it is either A: stuff you can't use until you have a higher level Facility, or B: stuff that takes a decent chunk of change to set up. I can write it all out if you like though.

[x] Hire a Public Relations Officer. A PRO allows you to drum up public support for your product and mission, slowly increasing your reputation over time. (Cost: .2 wealth/year. Time: Variable)
[x] Make a press release, to advertise A: your existence and B: your product, soon to be forthcoming.

Investors may contact you because of the above actions.

[x] Begin research on the Orbital Factory design. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 0/360, cooperative with Engineering.)

[x] Assist with research on Orbital Factory design. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 0/360, cooperative with Research.)
[x] Design a better 3D printer for orbital use. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current progress: 0/180. Cooperative with Research.)

next turn, the current plan of 'double down on press release, and keep on going with everything we did last turn' is good.

Turn 2 - March-April 2025
[X] Make a press release, to advertise A: your existence and B: your product, soon to be forthcoming.
[X] Make a press release, to advertise A: your existence and B: your product, soon to be forthcoming. X2 (24,40=64+10=74)

[X] Continue research on the Orbital Factory design. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 88/360, cooperative with Engineering.)
[X] Assist with research on Orbital Factory design. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 88/360, cooperative with Research.) (71+18+10+20+88=207/360)

[X] Begin production of 3D printed parts, models and souvenirs for sale. (Time: 1 turn. Profit: Up to .5 wealth/turn. Awards manufacturing team with experience in manufacturing.)

March-April 2025
Over the next month and a half, you and your Public Relations Officer began brainstorming for an official press release to the financial sector and to the world at large. After some initial success, you began to feel as if you were holding her back more than helping, and stepped back to let her do her job. It turned out to be a wise move, for a few reasons. Namely, she managed to pull together something like a presentable, even decent, presentation and pitch to the world at large.

In the end, all you had to do was go out on that stage and do what you'd already done once before - make people believe in your product. Only this time, you were running on someone else's script. It seemed to run a little better than doing it off the cuff. It wasn't amazing, and you can't stop thinking that you should have let your PRO do the release as well, but at the end of the day it is your product, and no one else believes in it as much as you do.

A few people come to your office after the fact, and present you with investments. Not as many as you would have hoped, but some is better than nothing.

(Reputation gain: 1. Wealth gain: 5)

Your research and engineering teams chugged solidly along, making fine progress towards the first prototype for the orbital factory - namely, you're ready to send a miniaturized version of the printer into orbit on a small rocket from Firefly Systems to test it. It'll cost you a cool million, but it would provide valuable data for your people.

Do you send up the printer prototype?
[] Yes. (Cost: 1 wealth. Benefit: +30 Bonus to next research roll.)
[] No.

Your manufacturing crew hits a few snags - namely, your equipment gumming up unexpectedly, halting production for several days while the printing heads are cleaned, inspected - and ultimately replaced. Your revenues from precision part printing this cycle will be disappointingly low.

(Wealth gained: .1)

Business - Turn 3
Choose two or double up on one.

[] Attempt to attract more angel investors. The money you have right now is, objectively, a lot of cash. However, on the scales corporations run on, it's not near as much as you'd like. (Success is more likely with more work done to present a working product.) Time: 1 turn.
[] Upgrade your facilities to level 2. Level 2 allows for a manufacturing team size of 30, research and engineering team size of 15. (Cost: 10 Wealth; Time: 4 turns.)
[] Hire manufacturing team personnel. (Cost: Up to .2 wealth/year. Time: 1 turn. Number of personnel variable based on rolls)
[] Hire engineering team personnel. (Cost: Up to .2 wealth/year. Time: 1 turn. Number of personnel variable based on rolls)
[] Hire research team personnel. (Cost: Up to .2 wealth/year. Time: 1 turn. Number of personnel variable based on rolls)
[] Have your financial officer begin canvassing for launch options. (Cost: nothing. Time: 1 turn. Yields information on launch prices and providers.)

Research - Turn 3
Choose one.

[] Begin research on the Orbital Factory design. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 207/360, cooperative with Engineering.)
[] Begin research on 3D Manufacturing improvements. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 0/180. Allows for faster manufacturing of prototypes and products, which means you can make more in the same timeframe.)

Engineering - Turn 3
Choose two.

[] Assist with research on Orbital Factory design. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current Progress: 207/360, cooperative with Research.)
[] Continue production of 3D printed parts, models and souvenirs for sale. (Time: 1 turn. Profit: Up to .5 wealth/turn. Awards manufacturing team with experience in manufacturing.)
[] Begin printing the Orbital Factory. Unavailable until research has been completed.
[] Design a better 3D printer for orbital use. (Time: Variable, based on rolls. Current progress: 0/180. Cooperative with Research.)

some questions @Shadows

Could you update this number? i think it is 207 but i would like you confirmation.

Why does this take an action? No duration was specified, only a time to start. Might i suggest giving us a separate manufacturing action so that each of our teams has their own actions.

If we up our team sizes, does that give us more actions?

Thanks for the catch.

I specify it as an action so you can opt not to do it when you like.

More teams, not bigger ones. Bigger ones just let you do more.

So if we just do a ton of research this turn does that mean we don't get any profit from production?

Math for research:
Base value of project = 207
Wanted Value = 360
Needed RP To complete = 153
2d100+20+10 = 30.8% chance to meet or exceed goal
2d100+20+10+30 = 58.1% chance to meet or exceed goal
3d100+20+20+10 = 82.8% chance to meet or exceed goal
2d100+20+20+10+30 = 94.0% chance to meet or exceed goal

I am fine with the 58% odds, especially as we get very limited bonuses (possibly none) from overflow.

Finally.

The launch had been a brilliant idea - a costly one, but a brilliant one. As soon as the miniature factory started to get to work, three hundred miles overhead, your research team's instruments had started to record faults in their programming - and in the printer's mechanics. It was far better you found this out now rather than later - when your entire company would have been riding on the successful operation of the printer and all its parts. As it was, you now had time to correct the issues and even improve on the printer's operation before finally rolling out the full-scale factory-printer. The full-sized, semi-trailer-scale factory is, to you, a thing of beauty - containing an area for the processing of raw materials, a large storage area, and the moneymaker itself - the printer.

The media started paying more attention when you announced that Earth's first orbital factory was ready to be orbited. It might have seemed the most mundane of things, your humble little factory, but it was a logical step for mankind's exodus into the stars - and a necessary one. Your flight test of the prototype garnered you approval and credibility in the business and civil world, even as opponents to the industrialization of space began to rear their ugly heads.

"We don't need to pollute our orbit any more!" they said. "We have ruined things down here enough as is - don't start mucking up the solar system too!"

They, thankfully, were drowned out by hopefuls. Space nuts, scifi geeks, normal people - the thought of a factory in space put it into perspective for a lot of people. News outlets did reports on the feasibility and profitability of space-based industry, and suddenly a lot more people began to support the factory.

Which you really should have a name for. It is the first of its kind, after all.

[] Write in a name!

Meanwhile, your Financial Officer, James, used the media circus to run down a bunch of names and companies and prices for launching the rocket...

(Pick One; weight of the Factory stands at 53 tons)
[] SpaceX. Vehicle: Falcon Heavy. 116,000 lbs to LEO. Cost: 30 Wealth (reused), 180 wealth (new)
[] SpaceX. Vehicle: Eagle. 300,000 lbs to LEO. Cost 60 wealth (reused), 600 wealth (new)
[] OrbitalATK. Antares-R. 86,000 lbs to LEO. Cost: 25 wealth (reused), 100 wealth (new)
[] ULA. Delta V-Heavy. 114,000 lbs to LEO. Cost: 40 wealth (reused), 400 wealth (new)
[] Blue Origin. Cargo Shepherd II. 108,000 lbs to LEO. Cost: 28 wealth (reused), 130 wealth (new)

There are others, but they decided not to respond in a timely manner.

Now you simply have to choose whether to use a reused vehicle - and assume the (albeit small) risk that the booster will fail with your rocket on it... or attempt to go get enough funding to purchase an all-new vehicle and shrink that risk as much as you can.

Space is hard.

Didn't SpaceX just launch the new Eagle Heavy recently? Once we have the big contracts coming in we should upgrade with SpaceX

So I'm assuming once we are settled in we plan on marketing Wetdock modifications to spacecraft?
Swap them from Ground-Orbit rocketry to Interplanetary craft (cost being based on time and net material gain/loss?)
Wet docking, because Drydock OrbFacs are too big. They need to engulf rather than dock with their customers so would need an order of magnitude more mass, so the first generation has to be Wet
It's even environmental stuff, rather than having to jettison into orbit, those stages can be collected and reused immediately with no chance of bad re-entry (posing a danger, being unrecoverable etc.) or being stranded in orbit
