Winter is Coming: House Stark Quest

Ned may have lost a step or two between age and his injury.

Jon probably has better odds if it comes to a physical challenge.

Sending Cat may keep it from being a physical challenge since I doubt their king would fight a pregnant woman.

Unless we take control of Cat for a bit if we choose get.... @Charcolt ?

She is a Stark...

Or she might just roll well for diplomacy for a change if left to her own devices.

But yeah, Ned is better off organizing the rest of the army.

Cat would do her duty but suspect this was some sort of weird plan to get her killed... and she wouldn't be wrong. I know you people. Ned's needed to keep the North from melting down before the CHUDs get here. And Jon already has experience with wildlings and the giants are wildling-adjacent so...

That depends on who is making the call on who goes there. I think the decision is Ned's.

Ooc I have no intention of sending Cat to her death. In fact, she may be best suited for this.

Ned is the Stark of Winterfell, but the Lady has important standing as well.

Jon could be sent....but him being with the army could make working with the Free Folk there easier. Him working with Ygritte would help. They know this crow gives a crap, at least, and is good for his word.

Cat is the one that wouldn't help organizing the army at all. So she is available.

But I feel like we don't know enough about the Giants to make a well-informed decision.

Bobby B quest we arm wrestled them into submission.

@Charcolt

Would Ygritte or the Magnar of the Thenns be able to tell us if they would speak and negotiate with women normally? Can't have the pregnant lady arm wrestling.

That said...depending on what insights on the Giants we might gain, Cat might be the better choice for diplomacy.

The Giants are bitter about past conflict. But this is about the future for Northerner, Free Folk, and Giant. And if you're talking about children in Planeos, that's a mother's wheelhouse.

I think they could be persuaded to help in the fight. What might need renegotiation is where they settle and the issue of fealty. Finding them a more remote location where they can keep to their own business entirely might be more agreeable.

She can't wrestle the Giants into submission, but she does have a strong will. Negotiation is within her skill set...yes, she flubbed the Baratheon talks in canon, but that was a very different situation. Speaking as the Lady of Winterfell with her husband's authority backing her up is something she can do.

[X] You're in a rush. Send for Catelyn Stark and have the army depart already!

You know what sure why not.

Obviously, the smart option.

I'm not sure about that.

I know I argued that it could be the best option, and am not trying to mess up the negotiations or get Cat killed...but it might not be the best.

Some of it hinges on Charcolt's answers to my questions.

Also...are the Giants with the rest of the Free Folk in the tunnels or are they above ground closer to the Wall?

If they are with the rest of the Free Folk anyway then sending Snow doesn't really hurt in regards to him being near to make the transition easier.

Heh...maybe suggest a SnowxGiantess marriage.

It'd be a rather unconventional move, and the giants do tend to be a patriarchal band, but they've been following a woman this far so they don't appear outwardly sexist. And they might be hesitant to cause conflict with a pregnant woman even if they call her husband a little bitch for not going.

Ned would be readying the armies of the North and the Free Folk to fight. A fight the Giants are currently sitting out of, so who's a little bitch for not going to what? :p

Still, something to consider.

I guess this fight is going to be coming up very soon...how long has it been since Robb sent that force North/how close are they? There must be word that they're on their way by now?

Edit: re-read the previous update. I forgot the talks were taking place at Castle Black. The Giants must be nearby. Either Jon Snow or Ned talking to them shouldn't be too much of a delay.

Realistically, neither Jon or Ned are likely to win a fight against a giant. We're probably not pulling a Bobby B here and convincing them that way. Tormund apparently killed a giant, so I guess it's possible to beat one 1 on 1. But Jon is young and Ned is still feeling his injury. At least I think he is. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Jon hasn't had all that much more interaction with the Free Folk than Ned, actually. Just with Ygritte. Though being the first one to extend his hand and try for peace is something.

But Ned is the Stark of Winterfell. That in itself is saying 'yes, we're taking this talk seriously'.

Cat is back at Winterfell anyway, right? And even though this is a crack quest (and I was hoping for a way for a Cat pov)...the more I think about it the more I have trouble seeing Ned sending a pregnant Catelyn to talk to possibly hostile people who are also 12 feet tall.

So either Jon or Ned. Kind of leaning towards Ned for his greater authority, though I'm wary of him being away and not leading the army.

Going with this for now, but may change if talking to the Giants requires a trip or not.

Confirmation on that @Charcolt

The leader of the giants, Mag the Mighty, is so by virtue of being their best warrior. Ned was certainly up there for fighters from the North...

Though I'm not sure if he has recovered from his injury by now. If he is still recovering...

Though we can probably persuade them without a challenge.

I'd prefer to send Jon Snow, but it's better than the Cat vote winning and it was currently tied.
