The fuck is Ozpin, previous attempt at Grimmfiltrator? Scene with the shadow and inhumanity kinda hints at it in huge neon signs, but I am a bit at a loss since all that symbolism jazz was never my cup of tea, and I apparently did not read Andersons or brothers Grimm tales.

Let us first determine the layout of the battlefield... getting lost while attempting more important stuff later would be an unbecoming way to fail.

Nnnoooot sure. If he is an infiltrator/another Shadow-type then he's a really fucking good one because he's apparently been teaching for awhile and highly regarded. And he probably would have "defected" considering he's teaching people how to most efficiently slaughter Grimm. It's worth noting though that Jaune wasn't feeling sympathy with Ozpin himself, but likening him to the Snow Queen. Who is herself a. waaayyy more human than the other Grimm and b. fucked up and kinda crazy and c. heavily implied to be related to Weiss and to have started out as a human. On top of that we know that humans can cut deals with Grimm (like Torchwick) and get Grimmbits/abilities (also like Torchwick).

Also Zerban's probably not going with the body-jumping immortal pedobear plot so. Y'know. :V

Tbh my money's on "fucked up hybrid" but that just kinda raises further questions. Like "does Ozpin know"?

(He totally knows. But if he does know then why isn't he stabbing us? @@)

[X] The faculty accommodations. If you follow Gotthard's scent you should find these just fine. The other two teachers she and Ozpin mentioned must be back by now too. Forewarned is forearmed - and they could be discussing things they never would in front of students.

Oz knows, if that pause before "Jaune" is any indication. Not stabbing....maybe because there is some story about shadow growing more human?

Semblances are apparently stories, so, like, we are totally all Raksha or Fae or whatever here, Grimm just have different flavour. Or something.

Maybe Grimm->human conversion is well-known in small circles phenomenon of the setting? :V

Obviously he wants to eat us and learn more about the Snow Queen :V

Uh.

Ozpin's shadow, too, stretches out east like a long black stain on the stone. Stretches out across you, over you, as if swallowing you whole. Painting the courtyard the colour of oil, triangular ears twitching-

You whirl to face him once more.

The sun is so low as to be fully behind him. Backlighting him with its dying orange glow, the sky above turning a thousand shades of gold and red and pink and purple. Turning the man himself into a near-complete silhouette. When he turns to look at you, the only light you see is from his yellow-amber eyes.
Um.

Between his eyes glowing in ways that really can't be caused by reflection and the way his shadow doesn't seem to be a match for the physical shape of his body, yeah, there's certainly something up with Ozpin. I suspect the "releasing you from his gaze as a wolf would a fox from its jaws" line isn't purely metaphorical.

I wonder if the faculty have noticed anything about him, and if they have, whether they ever talk about it - 'cause this was less than subtle.

(Edit: Actually, I have to add to this. That metaphor? Since when do wolves release foxes once they have them in their jaws, really?)

Ozpin is terrifying, the students are probably talking about student stuff, and exploring is boring.

My interpretation of the Ozpin scene is that Shadow!Jaune is sensing that Ozpin is more than what he appears to be, just like the Ice Queen is more than she appears to be. He's the leader of the opposing forces, so to speak.

Because this place is all about stories. The grander the life, the better the tale. And Ozpin knows his stories damn well.

Basically, we're the monster from book 1 that the protagonists are expected to find and defeat, while setting the big bad for the future. Alternatively, ours is a tale of redemption, of the monster becoming a man. Or if he wants to get really active into things, it's the story of the apprentice (with him being our master), us serving as a backup for him. Or maybe he spends our life somewhere else, IDK. There's always going to be a martyr at some point, and damn if our thematics (at least, those that the students will be able to see) don't fit. No proper weapon, support, somewhat tragic backstory? We're waving our own deathflag.

Either way, he's not killing us because he benefits from our presence. While technically we're an opponent's pawn on the board, he can pretty much do with us whatever he wishes. It may even benefit us as long as we don't push too hard too fast.

Learn the layout while nobody cares. We need that groundwork

Since they just spent the whole day stalking everyone they surely already have enough material for some teacher gossip and version 1.0 of their student shipping chart.

"What about the King's Brand?" Winchester asks. "You do know that's part of it, right? Finish your training, swear fealty to Vale forever? You're just cool with that? Or are you gonna try to weasel out of it and run off back to daddy?"
Interesting. So Huntresses aren't even supposed to be answerable to humanity instead of nations here. Probably a sensible change, but it's interesting nonetheless.
"You're gonna make Jaune team captain," Pyrrha repeats. Jabbing her thumb at Ren and Nora. "You're not gonna make it either of them because they'll just play favourites and play fuckaround-"

"This is true facts," Nora admits readily.

"Hey," Ren protests half-heartedly.

"Shhh, no honey."

"Okay."

Pyrrha makes an exasperated gesture with the same hand as if to say 'see!?'. "And you won't make it me because I'm on your shitlist to teach lessons about humility and whatever. So you're gonna saddle Jaune with the job and see if he loses his goddamn mind trying to get the three of us to listen to a word he says."

A faintly bemused smile crosses Ozpin's lips. "Correct on all counts, Miss Nikos. You're quite perceptive."

"And I'd make a great captain too."

"Most likely!" Ozpin agrees readily. He turns on a dime to look at you instead. "Mister Arc, you are now captain of your team. I expect to see you and your fellow captains at 6am sharp tomorrow morning - we have a great deal to discuss about the syllabus. I suggest you get used to getting up early."
Ozpin delights me. He feels like a kooky teacher who manages to be both very kooky and very much a teacher, where many stories ignore the latter. Pyrrha also continues to be excellent.

- [X] With an especial focus on security measures and defences, anything that might reveal you or stymie the Queen's attack.

While the faculty accommodations are a tempting target, I suspect they are not meaningfully less well guarded than Ozpin's office. I don't trust our shadowy nature to be a perfect foil to any discovery, especially as Ozpin seems to have rumbled us so early.

Yeah I'm getting the sense that Ozpin knows.
