"What about the King's Brand?" Winchester asks. "You do know that's part of it, right? Finish your training, swear fealty to Vale forever? You're just cool with that? Or are you gonna try to weasel out of it and run off back to daddy?"
Vale clearly has no Second Amendment lobby pushing for free Aura access.

Every citizen should have a transforming gun-sword-scythe in the home to defend against Faunus intruders!

Tap tap tap goes the tip of Ozpin's cane behind you. The whole class turns with you. The headmaster leans against his transformed cane a tad - seems he's had enough coffee - and drums his fingers on the finely-worked head. Scanning all of you one last time as he no doubt turns his evaluations over and over again in his head. There's a newcomer beside him, no doubt one of his aforementioned colleagues. Shorter than him by at least half a foot but the relative lack of stature doesn't fool you at all. You turn the quickest, catching her shooting Ozpin an absolutely filthy look. And then it's gone. She's looking out at all the students with a perfectly neutral-to-welcoming expression. She wears a rose-pink dress that looks like it belongs on a ballroom rather than the battlefield, shimmering and shining in the warm orange sunset. The neckline is cut low and square, a rust-coloured amulet the size of a compass hanging there securely on a silver chain, embossed in rose-thorns tangled around an unassuming keyhole. She's so very nearly picture-perfect - there's just a single leafy twig stuck in her wavy orange hair she missed.
Huh. Glynda got a makeover. New hair, new jewelry, and a new dress.

Also her surname is Gotthard, which apparently means "divinely stern". Got it in one.

Also there seem to be more than four staff members, and they have actual defined roles within the faculty. Amazing.

"Cardin Winchester. Sky Arvensis. Taube Bronzewing. Russell."
I'm sorry but a Team CRDL without stupid uninspired bird names is a game I'm just not interested in playing.

And there are no meaninglessly contrived acronyms to suggest they sorted the teams purely by what would make the easiest translation from names to colours! That's the very essence of RWBY, gone in an instant. For shame.

Also huh there are actual duties associated with the title "team leader" instead of it being a meaningless sop, that's interesting. I wonder if they rotate the role?

"Chin up, Miss Schnee," Ozpin goes on more softly. "Our aim is to broaden all of your horizons here at Beacon. The more richly-lived the life, the more potent the story! I promise you that by the time you leave this place each and every one of you will be shining beacons, both craved and desperately feared by all Grimm."

Semblances. Richly-lived lives. Potent stories. Words that at once mean nothing and everything to you. Semblance, that must be the strange and frightening powers sometimes wielded by humans. Story, self, everything that you hunger for in the pit of your shadowy core, must be what fuels it. And Dust, delicious Dust... where does that fit? You've never had cause to ponder that question before. Dust has always simply been... Dust to you. As ever-present and natural as grass or birds or water. The need to question and know everything all the time makes your head hurt. You just want to lie down again.
Wow Ozpin sure is talking like a Grimm here I wonder what that could mean :V

"And now, of course, we have our third and final team," Ozpin says, snapping you out of your reverie. The second team awkwardly makes their way over to the sidelines, Weiss and Blake refusing to get any closer than absolutely necessary to each other and the other half of the quartet. You, Pyrrha, Ren and Nora step forward. He looks at each of you in turn, weighing you carefully against each other in his mind, and comes to a decision-

"It's Jaune isn't it," Pyrrha says.

Ozpin blinks. "Beg pardon?"

"You're gonna make Jaune team captain," Pyrrha repeats. Jabbing her thumb at Ren and Nora. "You're not gonna make it either of them because they'll just play favourites and play fuckaround-"

"This is true facts," Nora admits readily.

"Hey," Ren protests half-heartedly.

"Shhh, no honey."

"Okay."

Pyrrha makes an exasperated gesture with the same hand as if to say 'see!?'. "And you won't make it me because I'm on your shitlist to teach lessons about humility and whatever. So you're gonna saddle Jaune with the job and see if he loses his goddamn mind trying to get the three of us to listen to a word he says."

A faintly bemused smile crosses Ozpin's lips. "Correct on all counts, Miss Nikos. You're quite perceptive."

"And I'd make a great captain too."

"Most likely!" Ozpin agrees readily. He turns on a dime to look at you instead. "Mister Arc, you are now captain of your team. I expect to see you and your fellow captains at 6am sharp tomorrow morning - we have a great deal to discuss about the syllabus. I suggest you get used to getting up early."
Can I just say how nice it is to have characters actually work stuff out on their own initiative, with actual comprehensible reasoning, instead of sitting around like dullards for the Wise Old Mentor to hand them a Mysterious Piece of Advice that conveniently explains itself at the eleventh hour with a helpful medley of voice-over clips to remind us of the friends we've made along the way?

also holy christ 6am

nice knowing you kids

[X] The dormitories. In this form you can properly snoop on them, sift through their belongings for clues and suchlike. Perhaps some of them aren't asleep yet. Any number of things you could glean about your classmates in confidence.

Even in Grimm form, it'd be best if we can keep our presence secret. Not alert the whole castle to the fact that a monster is lurking in their midst.

And no-one's going to believe a Grimm went on a panty raid.

"JAUNDICE?! SNOOPING AS USUAL, I SEE?"
...there's actually no other reason for this I just wanted to type pingas. i like old memes. i'm not sorry.

In retrospect, the teacher's lounge is probably also defended, and I'd rather not die night one.

Also, if my 'Ozpin is playing to stories' idea is correct, there should be level-appropriate (and some not, for dramatic tension) obstacles throughout the school.

"I- perhaps you simply weren't aware of my Semblance," Weiss forges on, hesitating only a moment before doubling down on her resistance. "But it seems more than perfect for the role of captain! I've had more-than-favourable tests using Schnee drones, if I were allowed to hone that ability in this environment-"

Man just a side-note but something I missed the first go around (or, well, thought about went "Hey that's cool!" and then forgot to post and never got my anonymous internet hair-rufflings): Weiss's Semblance is called Authority. It's a broad area buff (she was super keen on how it synergized with Jaune's) whose utility and efficacy seems directly tied to how many people are under her command. No wonder she fucking stampeded for the leadership role and no wonder Ozpin cockblocked her. No wonder she's really insecure too tbh, how strong she is is based on how many people listen to her and if nobody does she's got jack, which means people are less likely to heed her.

And Dr. Bigby is just sweeping that leg out nice and early.

Also huh there are actual duties associated with the title "team leader" instead of it being a meaningless sop, that's interesting. I wonder if they rotate the role?

Tbh I could 100% see Ozpin rotating the roles to fuck with create teachable moments for the teams. Like forcing Ren to step up and not just drift along, or Sky/Taube/Cardin to defer to an out and out social inferior, or make Blake actually give a shit about her team's feelings. Plus just assignments where a student has to guide others in their areas of expertise. Also so that the Captains get used to taking orders from others too.

Man is it weird that I'm legitimately excited for the team dynamics? 'Cause I kinda am.

In retrospect, the teacher's lounge is probably also defended, and I'd rather not die night one.

Nah I doubt it tbh. They're tired, Beacon's supposed to be well defended in and of itself, and when you live in a fortress you don't, like, slap a lock on every nook and cranny.

Plus tbh listening to teacher's unfiltered thoughts on our fellow students sorta hits a visceral, voyeuristic nerve 'cause man. We literally get a chance to be a fly on the wall in teacher's lounge dish sessions. Plus it'll help us blend in and shit: figuring out what the teachers are like when they're around peers, not their classes.

The truth is humanity lost a long, long time ago. Now it survives only to feed the eternal hunger of the demons who rule the earth.

Something, something, the Grimm are readers, an angry cannibalistic horde forever yearning for more stories to consume. The humans are the writers, grinding their lives away one deadline at a time.

"Perhaps we... got off on the wrong foot," Schnee says somewhat laboriously. "There was a great deal of tension from the examination, some things were said in the heat of the moment..."

"You had some fairly strong opinions about local Dust..." Winchester continues for her, distinctly unimpressed.

"The Dust was inferior! It was sabotaged!" Schnee protests. "And most importantly we can't allow ourselves to be divided over -aha- such petty squabbles. We're two of a kind, you and I! Descended from extremely respectable families, moments from receiving our leadership responsibilities. It only makes sense to maintain a cordial working relationship, doesn't it?"

And I thought Rostam had a severe case of foot-in-mouth disease.

"What about the King's Brand?" Winchester asks. "You do know that's part of it, right? Finish your training, swear fealty to Vale forever? You're just cool with that? Or are you gonna try to weasel out of it and run off back to daddy?"

"I did not come here to be interrogated!" Schnee retorts. "And- well, fine! If that's going to be your attitude then I see even my most hopeful estimates of Vale hospitality were grossly optimistic! Enjoy being stuck with a thief, a university student and a- a hedge-knight for a glorious Huntsman team!"

Oh, wow. That is a political hot button issue, isn't it? On both sides. Atlas/her family will never be able to properly trust her, because she has the Brand and probably came to Beacon against their wishes, and Vale will never trust her because she's Schnee. Maybe Weiss really is the loneliest of all.

You start forward. You know about Loneliness now. You may not understand it but you know enough. Jaune wished people would just look at him, acknowledge that he even existed. That's all Schnee needs, right? Once you do that she'll be friends with you, and you'll have one more ally for your assignment. Now all you have to do is figure out what to say. Something comforting. Friendly. Respectful. And confident, don't forget confident.

You know, I like this. It's not the monster encroaching on the human, it's the human encroaching on the monster.

"Professor Gotthard is being quite alarmist. The whole airship won't explode - just the fuel tank and engine really. Now!" Ozpin double-taps his cane against the flagstones beneath him. "We really must be putting you in your teams and sending you to bed! Rest assured you will be getting very well-acquainted with your professors soon enough. Step forward as I call out your names."

So, interesting thought I had. How much of the goofy professor thing is an act? Because leaning into it is a real good way of getting people to underestimate you/not realise that you are actually a secret Grimm that has turned good, or whatever's going on with Ozpin. It's a pretty traditional archetype as well, fits in with the Grimm preoccupation with that kind of thing.

So, apparently people know that Grimm hunger for stories? Interesting.

Pyrrha's smart. And also has no patience for shit.

"I'm also trying to teach young Mr Dark empathy and attachment with humanity. At least part of that involves coexisting with massive pains in the arse."

The sun's rays are practically horizontal now. Casting shadows so long that they seem to stretch from Vale all the way across the valley. Ozpin's shadow, too, stretches out east like a long black stain on the stone. Stretches out across you, over you, as if swallowing you whole. Painting the courtyard the colour of oil, triangular ears twitching-

Well. That's suggestive. Traditionally, the shadow/reflection of a thing is meant to show the truth of it.

Edit: Also, going by the wolf metaphor - maybe it's like Little Red Riding Hood or, more likely The Wolf and the Seven Young Kids. Ozpin put on the costume, or the flour, and when people let him in, he didn't go for the throat. He went native, so to speak.

"Good!" He turns away, releasing you from his gaze as a wolf would a fox from its jaws. You slump slightly, breathe a little easier. Ozpin looks out at the valley his school protects. "Do try to catch up to Professor Gotthard. And get a nice early night. It's not safe to be out all alone after dark."

The sun finally, laboriously drops below Vale and its high mountains. Plunging the clifftop into even, twilight shadow.

"Not even in Beacon."

"Yes, professor."

"Run along now."

"Why do I feel like I should say, 'I need an adult'?"

"Well, you only very recently became truly sentient. Likely, you're even younger, in terms of mental chronology, than the corpse of the young man you're possessing. This could be an expression of your subconscious acknowledgement of emotional and social immaturity. Though truth be told, it's probably because your host is what is colloquially referred to by the modern youth as 'a meme-loving fuck'."

Ozpin totally knows.

It's actually just going to be a bunch of bitching about the new crop of students. Or the old batch. Really, I don't think teachers, even ones at a school teaching monster hunting, are going to be that different.

Man, now you're making me want to see them interact. I wonder how Rostam would see her after everything that's happened so far?

Also, Ozpin totally knows.

Jaune Dark would make an interesting Servant to add to Rostam's cohorts.

I imaginge Rostam has seen enough feets in mouths to accept it as normal. :V

Oh fuck, you're right.

Combined with the wolf imagery later:
"Good!" He turns away, releasing you from his gaze as a wolf would a fox from its jaws. You slump slightly, breathe a little easier. Ozpin looks out at the valley his school protects. "Do try to catch up to Professor Gotthard. And get a nice early night. It's not safe to be out all alone after dark."

Ozpin might be The Wolf. Probably also the Big Bad Wolf.

I wonder if Grimm would love book stores? Imagine one of them suddenly gaining the ability to read, like our Shadow here. I'm sure that a books second hand story isn't filling at all, but it'd maybe be something like sweets?

Because it's significantly less risky than raiding the faculty even in fartgas modo. also i want to see what our fellow idiots students are doing. i want to know how everyone's a massive fuckup.
