Virtual Reality Civilization

a) I, too, would rather not do the watchtower and do research instead. But this plan is a compromise plan. I would furthermore direct your attention to the "[] Join a raiding party to attack traveling NPCs of another city so you can level and gain money." option. Clearly it is possible, and perhaps likely, that the PC's of our neighboring city will seek to assault our own NPC's. The Watchtower would provide our own PC's and NPC's with forewarning of such attempts.

b) In regards to your write-in, while it sounds like a good idea it also would take an action. We only get 3 controllable actions. At present, we are doing the village (to foster more income), the research (to foster more income, and martial and non-martial versatility), and the watchtower (to protect our income, to make our own raids easier, to have a good idea of the surrounding land). Next turn we will likely be doing an Upgrade to our Stabilizers, possibly establishing an NPC shop or instituting a set of taxes, and one or two research actions. We probably should establish the information bounty, but it will depend on whether other people agree that it's worth delaying research/item-gain opportunities. I would put limits on it and make the rewards for people after the first individual or group decidable per instance. Also, to some degree it's simply better to be proactive.

Edit: I think we have room for like... 3 villages, max, where we are now. We'll have to invade the city across the river sooner rather than later.

We should probably make a bridge across the river first, and then start building villages on the other side or something.

The bounty idea I had was about substituting the Watchtower by it, and have the Watchtower built in the next round, as I don't see ourselves getting attacked so soon. See, we are a kingdom, chances are the other city will have a different type of government and therefore slower to act.

Besides that, I mostly agree with you. By mostly I mean that I don't agree with attacking caravans already. It would build a bad rep of us, and also give a warning to the ONLY other city close that we are enemies.

If anything I think it would be a good idea to scout the city and if it seems unlikely that it will attack us, we let the status-quo stands as it is while we make use of our space to build all the villages that we can and to generally progress and train. When there's nothin' more to gain by waiting we attack.

Also, by having a village between us and the world, we have a buffer in case the next village is both aggressive and competent. Have them spend soldiers battling this village.

AND, should the village next to us be likely to attack us soon, we should take over it as soon as possible. For this, we should plan. I personally have a preference for bounty systems, as this world, currently, is one that everybody is kind of squishy.

I guess I should be more clear on this. Unless you use a city action to stop people from raiding or if you publically ally another city then they are going to do it, and the same for other cities. Using a personal action to raid just means you are joining in on it.

Edit: There are not yet ways to gain money and experience other than that. There will eventually be ways to do so, but to unlock those options requires some city upgrades.

It isn't the kingdom/republic/etc. attacking us, it is the *citizens* who are, i.e. the players who have their own initiative.

I am generally in agreement with creating villages and so forth, but it will depend on the answer to my question below and the reticence of our neighbor. I would note, however, that I quite certainly do intend to attack and suborn the neighboring city, so to some degree assailing their caravans and weakening them by depleting their income is only sensible.

Also, please note that the neighboring city is a city, and not a village. We can create villages; we cannot yet create cities.

@GilcuruLend Are there other ways to gain $ and experience than by assailing traveling NPC's?

Edit: Ah, hmm. So our players will be attacking regardless. *shrug* Well, we don't have the spare actions at the moment while we're getting set up, but we will soon enough. This renders the bounty system pointless, and makes more clear the value of the watchtower.

@GilcuruLend So, can players cross the river next to the city or do they have to go up and around?

So... there are NO neutral villages - besides the ones out of reach?

EDIT: New just made plan, we scout the city just next to us (city A) and the next (city B), see if they are likely to attack each other. And act according to these situations:

1) If B is going to attack A, we wait for B to attack and we ourselves attack. Regardless of who wins, it will be an easy take-over and soon another take-over of B.

2) If A is going to attack B we try to coordinate to attack A while A's troops are attacking B

3) If A is going to attack us, and B is going to attack A, try to gather what will happens first
---3.1) A will attack us before B have time to attack A, if B will soon attack A, we play on the defensive and try to conserve forces to later deal with B. If B will take time to attack A, we mix defensive with ambushes to damage A fast enough to scare them, but not enough so that when they run back they can fight with B
--3.2) A is planning to attack us but will take more time than B will take to attack A. We act according to situation (1)

4) If A is going to attack us, and B is NOT going to attack A. We either wait for A to attack us first and take him down HARD on our home-field, or we attack A before he can attack us. Depends on what seems better at the time.

5) We failed at gathering enough information to decide what is for certain the scenario. In which case we assume the worst, and plan accordingly. What IS the worst is up to debate, but I feel like the situation 4 is it.

Would you mind just assuming that we want to build the watchtower wherever it would provide the most protection for the city and our future village to the more sheltered west?
There isn't really a best spot. No matter where you put it they will be able to go around it, though it will still be useful by making them avoid the area or potentially killing the more foolhardy players.

Edit: @Michel Leopold
Yes, there are no neutral villages. Right now there are only the starting cities, and later whatever villages they build.

All cities are neutral, with neutrality being a status of city-state rivalry and raiding.

To be honest, I'm not very interested in complicated scouting plans, at the moment. I just want to grow our flock of attendant villages (and thus our NPC's) and eventually conquer the city near us through the sheer strength we possess as a powerhouse of martial skill and magical innovation.

I mean, is it more likely that players will cross the river or go around to the north? Will our own players prefer to cross the river, or go around to the north?

The only way to progress in this game is combat so 'neutral' here is something like a Cold War. The city itself isn't represented in Raids, but everyone knows who's responsible for who and what.

Remember, the only way to progress in this game is by fighting and farming your fellow PCs for that sweet XP, if wr stay neutral too long, everyone else will powerlevel and crush us.

I don't like the guy but i like the rest of the plan....

[X] Plan To Defend A Village
-[X] Agree to let him become prince, he has convinced you.
--[X] We shall see if his boasts can be backed up with words.
-[X] Personal
--[X] Training
---[X] Practice Forming Magic
---[X] Practice Swordplay
--[X] Social
---[X] Theodore
--[X] Shop
---[X] Stabilizer ($100) 2x
---[X] Lvl. 5 Sword ($150)
---[X] Lvl. 5 Bow ($150)
-[X] City
--[X] Would it be possible to shape magic into objects for something other than weapons? ($500)
--[X] Build a watchtower. ($500)
---[X] At the northern edge of the River, near the unknown city.
-[X] Build a village, which can serve as a staging point and has a NPC shop. ($5000)
--[X] Build it in the unoccupied territory to the west, away from all other known cities
--[X] How many NPCs to move there? (2% instead of 1% growth)
---[X] 800

And on the other hand, if we do attack other people we have the great advantage of having no one to the west of us, which means that the city to our east is likely fighting us and their eastern neighbor while we're fighting only them. And once we've conquered them we're fighting only their eastern neighbor, and so forth. Until boats are invented, at which point our coastline is at risk. Which makes it good that Theodore is pushing to invent boats first.

Yeah... it can work too. I guess I am more of a 'Cloak and dagger' kind of guy.

How do you find images? I'm looking for some so I can have pictures of characters but I have trouble finding any, and I see many of you seem to have (easily?) found images for the first vote.

The Fallen King
I'm 100% a "turtle and crush them with an infinite wave of elite troops" guy.
Our character, however, is an honor-bound nomad who accretes power through glorious victory.
So both of us will adapt.

Or, we mix things.

[OMAKE]
Title: The Fallen King (I'm open to other names, should someone thing this name is not good.)

When the game started, I soon became a king. The king of our little coastal City. On the same day I let Theodore - a supposedly genius guy - to become my prince, my second hand, my Right Hand even!

Things were going well, I trained and used city resources to war-related things, Theodore used his limited control of the city to economic-related things, and all was well. We were developing both economically and we were strong.

In our first fight, with the city just next to us - that didn't even have time to decide upon a name, as they were a democracy and there was no agreement what the name should be, we curb stomped them. There's no other way to define how things happened.

Every time something that was important to the whole city was called a vote upon, all the city needed to stop their training, hunting, and research to go vote. Such constant disruptions - as there were a lot of important matters to any city at the start of a government and here, in a new, unknown world, even more - kept their citizens from reaching their full potential in all areas.

Then, only a month into the game, we attacked. They were totally blindsided. Only a few of them was capable of fighting at the same level as our general population - level 5 - and our elite teams were unstoppable.

At the end of the day, a new city was under our - my - thumb.

Then things started to go wrong.

We then thought that we were the strongest at this stage of the game, and should take advantage and keep conquering cities as soon as possible. Problem is, 2 weeks later, when we attacked the next closest city to us, we were met with warriors as mighty as us, with technology and magic just slightly worse than ours.

If it was all, we would have a hard, bloody, war and we would - probably - be able to manage a win in the end. It was not all.

Our enemies were well informed, they had inside information from my Kingdom. Knowing us, they had two cities collaborate to eliminate a dangerous foe - us. One city concentrated their all training their warriors. The other, on support - research and spying my Kingdom. When the time came for battle, they knew our formations, our plans, and when we would attack.

And they prepared accordingly. Our vanguard, with their high defenses, was met with traps and guerrilla tactics before we even came close to them. But still, even with our vanguard in disarray, we kept advancing. After all, we were supposed to be the strongest around here.

Then, as we came close to the city, a shower of arrows came from the walls. Without the vanguard to water the damage, our warrior troops - that was focused on swordsmanship - suffered damage. Not enough damage for us to give up, but enough to make us take time destroying the gate.

Having little success destroying the gate with our warriors, we called upon our mages.

Then, we discovered that they were holding up their archers. That they only did not exterminate our warriors because they wanted to exterminate our mages. And so they did at this point in the battle.

While all of this was happening, a second army came from our back and cut our escape route. Then the impenetrable gate opened and from it came another army. And, without a vanguard, and without an organized mage troop, our warriors became easy pickings and soon we were exterminated.

Only me and Theodore survived. Me, because they wanted to humiliate me even more. Theodore because he was their spy from the beginning. It seems he was it from the start.

The leaders of both their 2 cities and Theodore came from the same clan from the real world. They, with another 1000 of their clan, planned to enter this game, become the leaders of all their villages, and should they fail, become a spy.

Their plan was to conquer the world between themselves, and THEN fight between each other. A guaranteed Win to the clan as a whole.

And I was utterly blindsided by their plot. And paid the price.

If only I had made spies of my own, I would be at least a little more informed. And, perhaps, win this battle. Or at least, not lose as badly.

If only we took our time to keep strengthening ourselves, and SLOWLY conquer whoever was in our path, like a well-shelled turtle.

If only...

In the center of the city we just tried to attack, my head rolls at the screams of joy of its inhabitants.

@GilcuruLend

Do we gain anything from omakes? Such as training/research bonuses?
Also, how they work? Dice Roll based?

A tad too parable-esque, for me. But I agree that we can't wholeheartedly obey the nomadic mode.

Edit: Yeah, omake bonuses would be nice. As would occasional irl interludes.

Yeah, you can add 10 to a roll that would have failed or would become a crit. You can tell me what type of roll you would want it added to if you want, too. (Like training or social or combat (combat rolls are mostly for determining casualties in battles) or research etc.)

And if you give the omake a name I'll add it to the apocrypha thread marks.

Title added. I don't know if its a good title, but I'm open to suggestions.

Also, I want my bonus into any research to create an artificial crit.
