You arrive in the game right when it opens. As the game lets you choose what you look like, you decided to style yourself after the ancient mongols, as you share a love of horses with the ancient people. You, and several hundred others are placed near the gate of a medieval-looking city. You look around and see it is full of stone buildings, most of which have NPCs inside of them. The gate is made of stone, and looks very heavy to move. You notice that you and the others are standing on a field of grass, with a curved bridge leading to the rest of the city over a small river. A gaudy dressed man quickly runs to the bridge and announces "I, Horatio Blakesley, shall be your king! Bow down to me, peasants!"

Someone else bites back, "You don't even know if this city is a kingdom! I read the informational guide, and there are four government types. I bet we are going to be a republic, and then none of us will vote for you."

"I don't care if it is a republic, I shall reign superior to all." Horatio replies, and you decide that you can't let this idiotic man continue.

You begin to speak, but are interrupted by a robotic sounding voice, "Greetings, players. You have landed in the city of Prares. Prares is a kingdom, which means one of you will be the king by the end of the day. You will notice your UI has a 'support' counter on the top-right, as well as a 'support' button. You may select the support button to choose who to support for kingship, and whoever wins the majority of the players currently online in the city will become king." Sure enough, glancing to the top right of your vision reveals an empty bar with the text "0%". You quickly click the support button and select yourself.

You walk to the middle of the crowd and begin to speak, "I will put myself forward as a candidate for king. We will have to fight the nearby cities, and I know both archery and fencing, making me the clear most qualified candidate to lead us to victory against the other cities." You finish your short speak by putting your hand in the air and covering it with glowing blue magic, a sharp tip at the end making your message clear.

"You? Become king? Don't make me laugh, you are an uncultured swine. I will become the king, as I am the best person here. You are nothing but a peasant! Kneel down to me!" Horatio shouts from across the field before anyone else can nominate themselves.

You become red with rage. You run across the field towards him, shouting, "Fine then! I challenge you to a duel!" You begin with a punch to his side, pushing him back. You notice the realistic sounds from the stream below the bridge you are on, but ignore it in favor of the fight. You use your martial arts skills to dodge his attacks while hitting him back, before his feet suddenly erupt in blue light and he jumps over you in a backflip, and then punches you in the back.

"Ha! I am victorious!" You respond by grabbing his next punch and throwing him to the ground. He utilizes his earlier trick again though, destabilizing you as you weren't expecting him to suddenly be on the other side of the bridge. Not having learned from his mistakes though, he charged at you with all his might. You dodge, and use his weight against him to throw him down and you step on his chest to prevent him from getting up again, as he lies exhausted and beaten.

You look around, and notice that your fight was being watched. Hundreds of players look at the first fight of the game, and when you look at your support counter you notice it has gone up to 30%. You begin to speak, "As you can see. I am very capable in a fight."

"Too scared to finish the fight though, huh? You only won because of luck. Let me go, and I will finish you!" Horatio one again taunts. You let him get up, and the fight begins once again. He runs towards you, and this time you don't go easy on him. You ignite your opened hand with magic, appearing to the observer that a flickering fire has covered it, and cut his arm off with the deceptively sharp edges.

"This ends!" you shout, and cut his head off. As his bloodless body fades away, you hold up his head by the hair to show the audience. You notice that exactly as his character dies, your support jumps from 30% to 45%, but a few seconds later it lowers back down to 35% as people react. Your level increases from 1 to 2 with a chime. "Support me for victory!"

Standing on the stone bridge between the players and the rest of the city, you notice they have begun to group in three groups as while you were busy with the fight the others were not idle. There are your supporters, standing in front of the bridge. To your left, there is a group of around equal size to yours around a posh man wearing purple robes. And to the right, there is a smaller crowd gathered around someone wearing cheap-looking clothes.

"Support me, Theodore, and I will make our city rich and powerful!" the purple-robed man proclaimed, "I am a verifiable genius, and will help make our technology the best in the game. As we are on a river we should be able to use boats to trade with other cities to make us the dominant economy."

"I am Bradley the Bandit! Support me and we won't need to be rich or victorious, we'll just steal it from everyone else!" the man in the group to the right professed. You noticed the players around him had less elaborate and thought out clothes.

What will you do next?
[] Have your followers attack one of them and their followers. (Pick which)
[] Challenge one of them to a duel. (Pick which)
[] Offer your support to one of them, giving up your chance to become king... for now. (Pick which)
[] Write in. (You can also use the write in for a specific plan)

AN: If you were wondering, if you didn't have the hubris malus then you would not have fought him before having a vote on it. Since you leveled up, here is some more information of the mechanics of it: The amount of experience you need is equal to your level squared, and killing a player gives you Exp equal to their level. This means that although there isn't a level cap, after a point it becomes exceedingly difficult to level up, and when you die your character is lost so you get restarted back to level 1. Your skills do not get lowered when you die, however, so the permadeath isn't as bad as it seems.

Alakhai's doing well already! That was a good show of her strength. If we're to duel anyone, I'd suggest the Bandit guy. Better we run under the pretense of law and order for safety, than to debase ourselves to complete banditry.

An alternative would be working with Theodore, we do need a good researcher for our Cavalry, and a strong economy will certainly support that.

Bradley most likely has a few tricks up his sleeves, he might even be able to match us in melee, but at the end of the day, he is a bandit and bandits aren't known for their stellar performance in holding their ground when they don't have a overwhelming advantage. When he turns his back to us to flee, we can turn him into a pincushion.

You got me with that colored text.

That, and talking about Law and Order when the player groups just started smacking each other around, with us going "Law of the Jungle baybee!" on Horatio might turn some of our followers off of us.

Bradley doesn't seem like the type to go with Honor and Justice, but his refusal will just paint us in a better light.

With the other guy we can just form a duel kingship like Sparta had.(If the GM's fine with that of course)

Edit:Which might acutally work since we could be the military-based king and he can be the civilian-based king.

"Bradley the Bandit! We will be a city of honor and justice, not just pathetic bandits! I challenge you to a duel. Meet me halfway between us, and let us do battle!"

You see the aspiring bandit whisper to someone near him, then loudly accept. You and him walk towards each other, leaving your respective groups behind. You face him standing on almost too green grass, preparing to fight. He stands in a strange martial arts pose which clearly came from a movie. Someone begins counting down, "Three! Tw-"

The count is interrupted by Bradley rushing towards you with his hand covered in magic energy. You quickly do the same, and you clash, magic sparks flying through the air. You quickly gain the advantage, as he is merely swinging wildly and you cut him on his sides several times.

Right as you are about to deliver the finishing blow, two of his henchmen run up and start fighting you two on one. You spin to the side of one of them and stab him in the side, leaving him lying in the grass clutching the hole in his abdomen. The other you quickly disable with a kick, leaving him bent over in pain.

You suddenly feel a sharp pain as your arm almost gets chopped off. Bradley was not idle while you were busy with his flunkies, and he had snuck around behind you and stabbed your arm in an attempt to cut it off, but lost focus and lost control of his magic.

Now able to fully focus on him, you know you need to finish the battle quickly. You surround your feet with magic and jump over him, doing a flip so you are upside down while directly over him, and cut his head off before falling back down to the ground. You absently notice a notification telling you that you got +1 Exp, much more interested in the fact that your wound has already noticeably healed.

When you turn around, the two bandits have disappeared back into the crowd. However with your kill of one of the two other remaining candidates, the support bar jumps from 40% to 60% and then disappears.

The robotic voice from earlier announces, "Alakhai has gathered over half support. She is now the king and will have full control over the city." You see there is much cheering from your supporters, and visible disappointment from the bandits and Theodore's followers.

Theodore approaches you and begins to speak, "Hey, new king. I may have lost the kingship, but I would be willing to work with you if you make me the prince. That means if your character dies I become the new king, and I can choose some policy. So how about it?"

How will you deal with the 'bandits' who attacked you?
[] Demand that anyone who knows where they are to bring them to you so you can kill them.
[] Ignore them and don't mention it again
[] Write in.

How will you deal with Theodore?
[] Accept his deal. He becomes prince, and should you die will become king. He will also have some influence on policy.
[] Deny his deal. You don't want anyone who might be opposed to you to have so much power.
[] Write in

[X] Write in - Declare clemency to all who attack you so long as they come before you and beg for the opportunity to perform a service of some kind. Make clear, however, that such a policy will not lead to clemency in battle nor the serial forgiveness of serial offenders.
[X] Write in - Speak thusly, "While I admire a man with vision for what we as a nation may one day become, the weight of such a vision must in part be based on who the man offering it is. Speak further on what knowledge you have to offer, on these policies you dream of and how they will affect my city, and on why I should trust you."

[X] Umi-san

Sounds good to me.

While we know Theoder went the Econ and Tech route, it'd be much better if we hear the specifics from him.

Now that we're King, technically Queen because Alakhai's a woman, what's the maximum tech level a city can reach? Is it like Civ where we can go up to Sci-fi, or more along the lines of Total War with gradual advancements in tech but never reaching beyond Ancient/Medieval tech?

Tech in this is less like IRL tech and more just different ways to utilize energy. So you won't be seeing normal guns, but you might eventually get hover boards.
