He's like Ichigo, remember that Ichi got so good at fighting because he was bullied in school because of his orange hair? He could have dyed it black to lessen the bullying and the teachers getting on his case, but he refused because it was his hair and he was proud of it.

He's a prideful guy and he is actively straining against being sealed as he doesn't like it, it's not going to instantly win him over and make him love Ichigo but it is going to make him less cranky.

While he could be the type to want to show off a bit...I also feel he'd rather stay sealed until a worthy foe, he did say call out his name when you need a real sword (which can be taken as to actually hurt, defend himself or kill something strong).
Also likely helps control with our energy I believe.
