The Lighthouses and the Pit (Fantasy Mage Quest)

Fleshcrafters are basically immortal, since they will also de-age themselves constantly?

Fleshcrafters can't craft their own flesh. Thunderfists are personal biomancy, Fleshcrafters are other-biomancy.

2nd Ascension - Does it also improve one's base magic or so, so a mage of the 2nd Ascension would naturally be a better Fleshcrafter than a mage of the 1st Ascension (For example)? Even if the 2nd Ascension Mage had just become a Fleshcrafter.

All the Second Ascension mages you've ever heard of are tremendously powerful, capable of fighting ten or fifteen regular mages with ease if combat-oriented. Whether this is just skill synergy or actual magical power is something you don't know, though.

I'm curious - The state of the world as it is.. Why would Cancellers or Mindscours be valued at all?

Cancellers can weaken Darklings. A powerful Canceller is essentially a force multiplier for an entire battle, and some of the more epic-scale Darklings are pretty close to unkillable,. Also, there are really obvious social problems that stem from having the most oppressed people in your city pushed into (as far as the cities know) magical black boxes that kill or maim 90% of them and make the other 10% superhuman.

Mindscours aren't valued so much as they're powerful. Not only can they read minds and replace memories (meaning they're almost inherently at the top of any social hierarchy), they can steal skills and knowledge, meaning if you can find enough experts, you can potentially be expert-tier in everything. Even if you're limited to regular human skills, having a few hundred years of subjective skill honing is pretty huge. Presumably in terms of raw administrative and diplomatic skill they're pretty good, as well.

They're not well-liked, and they rarely leave Rosolin. However, Rosolin is also the most organised of the Three Cities - it has a regimented military of Longshots and Breathtakers who can slaughter Darklings en masse, and who possess tremendous co-ordination and mobility. It also happens to be the only city with mind mages, which seems awfully coincidental.

Conversely, Everett barely has a government (powerful elemental mages defend the walls, plant mages feed the populace, and the food can always be tuned to only support a certain number of people), and Madalgia is more like an amalgamation of two to three groups that hate one another, with one group using the poor as a meat shield and defending the outer walls properly only if it's really necessary.

Lastly, since people don't get to choose what power they get, there's no reason to ever turn away a mage.

Probably the most munchkin combination is mind mage first, runesmith/alchemist second. Mind magic will let us gather knowledge how to do the second ascension much more quickly, and when we're a skill-based crafter mage, we can steal (or buy) skill from more experienced magic users.

Hey, just a brief update-ish thing. Been moving house, and threw out my back pretty unpleasantly, so I'll be laid up for the next two or three days most likely. I'll get back into posting once it recovers

I can't say I'd disagree with either leading choice.

I like this quest. It's already quite fun, with all the worldbuilding.

It's pretty close, but Helped the Wounded is the winner.

As an aside, keep in mind that all emotional traits have pluses and minuses. Hopeful might lead you to make bad choices. Compassionate means you're less likely to accept rewards from people in need, and so on. Being a little bit of a dick isn't necessarily a bad thing in a harsh world.

Choice of Lighthouse
On your fifteenth birthday, you were not expected to choose your fate, as such. That being said, making it to another Lighthouse beyond the Yellow was difficult, and you only had one choice beyond it. The Purple and Blue Lighthouses you had already decided against, and the others belonged to the other cities. As it stood, you were determined to choose either Orange or Yellow.

To make it across the continent to the Orange Lighthouse, however, required you to be dedicated to the notion, willing to ask and ask again at the orphanage, to sign up for a trip that was effectively a death sentence if you failed. The Shaderunners would not help you return home if you came out of the Lighthouse maimed and powerless.

[ ] You Aimed for the Orange Lighthouse

To travel this far would require bravery, as well as impressing a Shaderunner with your conviction in the matter. You would need to work hard at convincing a Shaderunner to take you, or at least make you part of the group that was spirited to the Orange Lighthouse. To do so meant giving up other things that you could be spending your time on, trying merely to stand out in your willingness to die. In your willingness to do this, you would find your stubbornness growing as well.

Become more Stubborn. You will enter the Orange Lighthouse on your next turn, gaining the powers of a Bladebound, Fleshcrafter, or Tremorfoot. (The quest will choose the powerset, alongside the associated emotional trait).

[ ] You Aimed for the Yellow Lighthouse

After helping others in the Darkling siege, you felt something go out of you. An anger you didn't know you had, your compassion overwhelming your frustration at the situation that existed. Most orphans carried anger within them, but seeing the horrible deaths of so many didn't fill you with rage, but instead drained it from you, making you calmer, more dispassionate. It was peculiar, and people remarked upon it. You spent the year simply understanding what had happened, and while hopeful you could succeed, you spent your time understanding yourself, coming to terms with the possibility of death.

Become less Angry. You will enter the Yellow Lighthouse on your next turn, gaining the powers of a Shaderunner, Glimpse, or Spellthief. (The quest will choose the powerset, alongside the associated emotional trait).

Interesting. Think I would be fine with either choice, but I like the calm dispassionate one a little bit better.

[X] You Aimed for the Yellow Lighthouse

On the one hand, powers I like. On the other, character choices I like. Darn and double darn, @occipitallobe , why couldn't you make this an easy choice? =P
