Winter is Coming: House Stark Quest

[X] Bow your head.
[X] Send North 10,000 men of the Westerlands under a lord recommended by Tyrion Lannister for his loyalty and military acumen (Crakehall? Daven Lannister?). Send North 10,000 men of the Reach under a lord recommended by Randyll Tarly for his loyalty and military acumen. Send North 10,000 men of the Stormlands under a lord recommended by Davos Seaworth for his loyalty and military acumen. Send 250 men with Greatjon Umber who is to command the entire force. Have their lords order them to follow the Greatjon's commands until they reach North, and upon joining with your father, follow Lord Stark's commands. There are reports of a huge wildling army coming to cross the Wall; their mission is to stop them. All the while, advise the Greatjon to be wary of the Golden Company landing on the east coast and the Ironborn attacking the west coast.
10,000 men of the Westerlands should keep watch on their western coast in expectation of a possible Ironborn assault. 10,000 men of the Reach should keep watch on their western coast in expectation of a possible Ironborn assault. 10,000 men of the Stormlands should keep watch on their eastern coast in expectation of a possible landing by the Golden Company. In case of a large force landing, they are not to engage, but rather immediately send out ravens with warnings, and attempt to regroup and slowly withdraw until a force with an experienced commander joins them, so that they outnumber the attackers 2 to 1.
All other soldiers of these realms should stand down, return to their homes, fields and castles, and focus on bringing in the harvest. The North/Riverlands/Vale force will remains with us, until we have definitve word on the intentions and place of both the Ironborn and the Golden Company.

It would be nice to know how much aid the North wants. Though it's hard to say if they would downplay how much they need or ask for more than they need.

As for kneeling or bowing our heads, I think we should kneel. It is Shireen's claim. We just borrowed the claim in part to keep order. It shows her respect and puts to rest any fear of Robb being a usurper.

As for why we should bow out head? I'm not going to go all Philip and Elizabeth here; I'm willing to compromise. We're not her subject, but we do offer her respect and the chance for a true partnership.

Most of the Northmen were already sent back North, weren't they?

The best thing we can do for Iron born is let anyone we don't think we need for Wildlings or Aegon go home to rebuild.

We need to rebuild and recover, but also send out agents in search of Aegon. If we can find him and have sufficient force to deal with him, we should.

@Charcolt

I think my vote was in the lead, but seems like the vanilla Storm's End vote went in the update.

I'm not complaining...especially since we're taking the time to vote on strategy now anyway so it doesn't really matter.

But any ravens from Winterfell or the Wall?

Looking back at your post with the tally...it looks like that tally was from before your deadline. Hmm, honestly not sure what the count was at 10 am yesterday.

This tallier really is quite awful failing to update. Regardless, I rolled for your Free Cities actions in the dice room (though they and the hunt from Dragonstone didn't succeed in any meaningful ways). That stuff I've incorporated into Robb's plan moving forward and will keep in mind the consensus there. This is the last update with Robb for a while.

I figured it was something like that.

The only nitpick I have is not knowing if things are bad in the North/at the Wall or not, which was the point of sending ravens to get word back.

Good to know you did do rolls for the Free Cities and Dragonstone, even if nothing came of it. But if my vote was/might have been in the lead could we at least get some information from ravens that would have been sent so that we have that information to better plan our strategy?

If not, I'll drop the matter. But I thought I would ask again in light of the tally being a shit.

The news you do have from the Northern lords (not from Ned, mind you) is that they're massing strength at the Wall on request of the Lord Commander and that an expedition has made its way north (including Jon Snow).

Okay, at least we know the Northern lords are mustering their strength at the Wall. Thank you.

Of course, if the Wall comes down they're fucked.

We should send some backup. The Wildling 'army' in canon was 100,000 strong. But that included women, children, and the elderly.

For the write-in that's gotten votes so far. Is Greatjon Umber even with us? I thought he went back North with Ned already.

I think we need more of a plan for Aegon than just 'watch the coasts'. We should be looking for him. Perhaps we could send out envoys for trade who will double as keeping an eye out for the Targaryen pretender? Once we do find him, we should have naval and army assets already ready to go and hunt him down if at all possible. That means setting those assets aside for that purpose.

We have the Royal Fleet, at least. We might have the Redwyne assets to make use of if they're still intact. The Manderly fleet is best employed to assist the North with supplies.

As for armies and who to send/where from...we're going to need more details. You mentioned we currently have access to 80,000. But what's the make up of that from each Realm?

The Dornish 'army' was soundly defeated by Tarly but that was a force of second sons and bastards. The Westerlands were still mustering a host when they withdrew from the war.

The Westerlands may have their own naval assets...or at least be able to buy sell sails, but they would also want to leave their coasts protected.

I've been trying to find just how many of the Northmen were sent back with Ned and how many they should be able to get to the Wall altogether...but I can't find that in this thread. Anybody have any ideas on that?

While I'm waiting on a bit more information, trying to dig in the thread for clues on how many men the North would be able to muster to the Wall on its own, and thinking of ideas for the North and Aegon...might as well also make a point or two about bowing our head or kneeling.

[X] Kneel.

We took charge because we couldn't afford delays or disorder, but Shireen's claim is the rightful one.

You could argue Robb won the war and therefore deserves the crown. He certainly has the power to back it up with the support of the Valemen, Riverlanders, and North. But it sounds somewhat similar to Renly thinking he should be king because he had the most support. If he kneels that shows that duty and doing the right thing matter, especially since Robb would be doing this when he has the power and doesn't have to relinquish any of it.

It's not like Robb would be giving up all the power. Shireen is nine. She'll listen to her advisers, and she would certainly listen to her future husband, who is the leader that won the throne for her.

Back to troop assignment for a bit...

Still looking for numbers on how many the North and Watch would have (between the veterans going back North with Ned and levies that Robb didn't have time to muster when first going South), along with numbers for each Realm and major naval assets...

But I figure we can at least work on an outline.

Going off of what @Charcolt said earlier, we have 80,000 troops. Though I'm not sure if that would change with completing the ceremony to Shireen. The Stormlanders would certainly be more loyal, at least.

The exact numbers available from each realm is unknown.

Northern relief effort:

Manderly fleet: sending supplies.
Troops: 10,000-30,000. Tarly in charge. Might as well have our best commander help crush the Wildlings.

Hunt for Aegon:
We don't know where he is at the moment. A part of this would be making sure the coasts aren't defenseless (which also helps in case the Iron Fleet starts raiding), but we can't just sit and wait, either.
We can encourage 'trade envoys' from the Free Cities to Qarth on behalf of the Seven Kingdoms, but they are also tasked with covertly seeking information on Aegon. I think Lord Velaryon could be put in charge of this?

If we do find him, then we should have a force ready to go after him if he happens to be in a place we can get to. Davos would be in charge of the naval part of things for any force sent after Aegon. I'm tempted to keep Tarly in reserve for leading things overall (instead of sending him North), but we might not even find Aegon. Anyone have any ideas for another competent commander.

Force held in reserve for killing Aegon: 40,000

That leaves 10,000 remaining (assuming the reserve force has already left) for anything else that might come up, like the Iron Fleet suddenly deciding to play. But that's if we send 30,000 North, and I'm unsure about sending that many. As I said, trying to find some numbers (how many the North would have between veterans and new levies) and waiting on others (how many from each realm).

There's also the naval assets to consider. If the Royal Fleet is held in reserve to deal with Aegon, and it is sent out, what else do we have in case the Iron Fleet arrives?

The Estermonts may have some assets, and the Westerlands will have them too. Not sure if we can really force the Westerlands naval forces to go where we want, though. That leaves the Redwyne fleet, if it's intact.
