Battle Chef: A Cooking/Dungeon Exploring Adventure

[X] Leviathan - Though currently small enough to wrap around her waist, fully grown this sea serpent will be hundred of meters long. With a power command of water and ice, it is a deadly monster in water and ice environments.

Best one to get fishes and other sea creatures, which is what we'll need most I believe.

@ObservingShadow, the combat skills have been posted! Please come take a look!

[X] Golden Rukk - It is presently still a chick and unable to fly, but he belongs to a prestigious lineage of legendary birds. With feathers of gold that crackle with lightning, at the very least it is a conqueror of the skies.

Air superiority, and it'll be great against sea targets anyway. And land targets.

... And air- look, there ain't much that can stand up to a couple hundred thousand volts of electricity.

You can pick now. I'm pretty sure you're going to put it in one of recipe creation attempts haha. Also in this one off instance I will let you do a write in for a recipe. It's not the fairest thing since I opened the vote before allowing this but I think no body would mind too much as it increases your chances of success
Hm...

Well, yes, I'd like to apply it to the recipe creation, and since you're kind enough to offer me a write-in- since we got all that stuff for the tuna poke, I can only assume that other spices and such are provided as well, and we already have shrimp on the same level as the rice, so it should be easier to work with than the tuna or the urchin, and grilling is already our highest skill... will "Garlic and Herb Grilled Shrimp" do for a write-in?

[X] Terra Lion - A kitten with a deep connection with the earth, even at its young age it could carry a man upon its back. When matured it is a physical colossus, capable of taking innumerable hits upon its thick hide while striking with enough force to destroy a fortress. Like all cats though it can be rather temperamental.

[X] Leviathan
If it was for me I would 100% pick the cat, but a giant sea serpent is far more useful for creating sushi.

While we're specialized in Sushi, I don't think we should be too specialized. Especially since we'll probably get in fights on land.

snek
Really big units are very useful.
Sushi means water.
Also, I'm pretty sure shed snakeskin will be useful for some form of equip. The only other one with usable parts without harming it is the bird, with shed feathers.
Cat and Dog would probably not react well to shaving their fur or skinning them.

As much as it breaks my heart to not vote for a big fluffy puppy, this is just pragmatically the best choice.

Sure that works!

For all the leviathan votes I wouldn't restrict yourself quite that much. The fire wolf has fire control which could help you cook too for instance or the rukk could help you identify and swoop down on ingredients. There's more diversity than just sushi it just happens to be what you're great at now.

It may not be able to go underwater but it'll have use on land and having air superiority is great for dealing with underwater titans if they deign to rise to the surface.

Give me the good puppo!

How many points would it take to unlock one of the ???? skills? Just out of curiosity, since I'm fairly certain that at this point those 2x5 blocks would be best going into dodge and trickery. Highest chance of survival and trickery might help on trapping food without damaging it too badly.

Also, this is currently how I'm thinking of the choices:

[ ] Scorching Wind Wolf - The cutest, fluffiest wolf puppy in history, it barks happily whenever it sees you. It has white fur with streaks of red and orange through it that glow like fire. A member of an ancient species of wolves, they are capable of extreme speed and a monstrous command of fire.

Cute puppy is cute. Seriously, though, it could be useful as a form of transport (if we can ride it, Princess Mononoke-style) and its control over fire will be an immense help with later recipes when we branch out (which we need to do). Not sure how fast "extreme speed" is, but don't think that it will be able to outpace a thunderbird.

[ ] Golden Rukk - It is presently still a chick and unable to fly, but he belongs to a prestigious lineage of legendary birds. With feathers of gold that crackle with lightning, at the very least it is a conqueror of the skies.

Once it is able to fly, it will be allow us to cover even more ground than riding the wolf. The ability to give us a higher viewpoint and greater field of vision will also inevitably be useful, especially with higher trickery. The ability to catch flying food is also quite welcome, though lightning = char broiled for the smaller ones. (Also, if reading through Kancolle quests has taught me anything about naval warfare, it's that planes/flying creatures that can look directly down on the water are a submarine's/submerged creature's worst enemy.)

] Leviathan - Though currently small enough to wrap around her waist, fully grown this sea serpent will be hundred of meters long. With a innate command of water and ice, it is a deadly monster in both environments.

Very useful for catching seafood, which is essential to us as a sushiya. If it can help us travel around underwater, then that's even better. Could be useful as an escape route, especially once it grows to huge sizes. (Once it gets big enough, could we travel around inside it, like Noah/Finding Nemo? If we could somehow build a mobile kitchen base or even just a storage closet, that would be fun as all hell.)

[ ] Terra Lion - A kitten with a deep connection with the earth, even at its young age it could carry a man upon its back. When matured it is a physical colossus, capable of taking innumerable hits upon its thick hide while striking with enough force to destroy a fortress. Like all cats though it can be rather temperamental.

Hmm... A connection with the earth would be very useful for finding underground animals, certain plants and buried treasure. If it can sense all things in contact with the earth in a certain radius, like earthbending, then that would also be useful for avoiding unpleasant encounters. I don't believe I need to mention it's capability as a tank. Least useful in my opinion, because cats aren't well known for following orders. You don't own them, after all. They own you.

For now, I believe I'll go with the:

[X] Scorching Wind Wolf - The cutest, fluffiest wolf puppy in history, it barks happily whenever it sees you. It has white fur with streaks of red and orange through it that glow like fire. A member of an ancient species of wolves, they are capable of extreme speed and a monstrous command of fire.

option, because of its future utility. Very tempted to go for the bird, though.

[X] Leviathan

Generalization is for the weak.

Specialization all the way!

(Also not necessarily tactically correct, but I like reading about specialized and pointed characters rather than jack of all trades.)

So... quick analysis time!

Pet options

[ ] Scorching Wind Wolf - The cutest, fluffiest wolf puppy in history, it barks happily whenever it sees you. It has white fur with streaks of red and orange through it that glow like fire. A member of an ancient species of wolves, they are capable of extreme speed and a monstrous command of fire.

Let's see... from the top:

Fire Doggo - Fire elemental beast. Depending on how big it grows, would be a fairly cool mount. Also, fire control would definitely help with some of our cooking. Unfortunately, fire element may not be good if we're going to be mainly hunting for sea creatures

Fawkes' Cousin - Thunder Bird. Best available mount - once it grows up, I expect we'll be able to zoom around like nobody's business. Lightning control would also be pretty cool to smite annoying people monsters

Not-Tentacle Monster - Water based monster. Am a bit sad we don't have a Kraken option, but this is still pretty cool. Doubles down on our seafood specialty, and its ice would provide an excellent way to capture rare beasties alive. Not sure if we can ride it properly unless we get some kind of water-breathing ability, though

Big Kitty - Earth element. Already big enough to ride, though I'm pretty sure it's the slowest mount available. It's definitely tanky as shit, though it's temperament may be a bit troubling. It'll probably sink like a stone, so I don't think kitty would be of much help against water monsters.

For me, the pet options are:

Golden Rukk > Leviathan > Scorching Wind Wolf > Terra Lion

Combat Skills:

Movement: 30
Dodge: 45
Light Armor: 10
Medium Armor: 25
Heavy Armor: 0
Block: 15
Sword: 15
Polearm: 70
Spear: 10
Greatsword: 10
Unarmed: 40
Throwing: 5
Archery: 10
Tactics - Preparation : 20
Tactics - Trickery: 45

Reconnaissance: 10
Disguises : 20
Combat Stealth : 0
????? : 0

????? : 0
????? : 20
????? : 0
????? : 0

Our highest combat stats are:

Polearm: 70

Dodge/Tactics - Trickery: 45

Unarmed: 40

We haven't actually gone into combat yet, so I'm unsure if we really need to git gud quick or if we're considered a decent fighter already. Might want to start raising Tracking or Reconnaissance soon if we're going to be a monster hunter, though.

For now, my vote is:

[X] Golden Rukk - It is presently still a chick and unable to fly, but he belongs to a prestigious lineage of legendary birds. With feathers of gold that crackle with lightning, at the very least it is a conqueror of the skies.

Just the normal five point block so nothing special you just don't know what it is. So it could potentially not help your build or it might uncover something worthy of early investment. That's where the dilemma comes from. For the foreseeable future you gain a +5 skill block for every rank up within a circle and 3x 15 point blocks upon a successful increase in circles.

Also I think I might eliminate culinary knowledge's impact and change into an achievement type Stat. So you get special bonuses and things like access to recipes and ingredients. Then I can expand the types without having to track it as seriously as a skill. Currently contemplating this but will accept some input.

I'm looking at that hidden skill that we already have experience in and thinking about our background... it's a stretch, gun crime is pretty rare in Japan, but am I right in saying that the hidden skill is us knowing how to dome a bitch?

How would we progress with culinary knowledge in an achievement-based system? Right now, it's simple, we cook, we progress by percentages, but in an achievement style system, the points of progression become... a little murkier, I suppose.

Would it be things like 'create a full course meal using this culinary style,' 'Earn 1000 wingwongs using Italian dishes,' so on? Because something like that might work for general progression, each achievement adding a static bonus for the style in place of , then you could add in some more difficult or impressive achievements for better boons like new recipes and ingredients. Overall, I think an achievement system for culinary knowledge could work just as well as treating it like a skill- I certainly don't think it would detract from the quest.

It's up to you, but I don't think there's any inherent risk in changing over, so it's just a matter of what you're most comfortable with.

Also, purely out of curiosity, if we'd taken the drugs option for our free time, what kind of benefits would that have given, and how hard were you gonna go there? Are we talking the odd, ah, jazz cigarette, or something a bit harder?
