Battle Chef: A Cooking/Dungeon Exploring Adventure

Is now a bad time to open a sweet shop? I don't think we have anything in the way of deserts.

I think you could derive some desserts from your existing products namely the rice. A lot of asian desserts use it as a basis. You don't have a good sweet component though, that will need some more work like a fruit or sugar or honey or something[/QUOTE]

if we really must have sweets, I suppose we could look into making rice pudding...

I see Mango w/ Sticky Rice at a lot of Thai places.

If you ferment rice in a specific and careful manner you get Jiuniang! And it's sweet and slightly alcoholic tasting and the taste is strong and delicious!

My mom occasionally makes it and I love eating it. I hate the taste of alcohol but Jiuniang is really good.

That's a tasty dish! A mundane version is easy but you don't have the right ingredients for a dish to make it on the menu. You need at least one ingredient with level one or higher.

For this the primary ingredients are sticky rice, coconut milk, and fruit usually Mango.

What flavour is this rice pudding?
Fish flavour.

I think you've just created an abomination.... A sushi pudding.

*looks at my sensible vote for fruit and beef*
*looks at y'all voting for egg and chicken*

Eggs are pretty diverse though and an important foundation for many desserts!

Hm...

@Emperor Toast , What basic herbs/spices do we have?

I didn't want cooking to be impossibly unruly but you can assume anything you can think of on earth is provided to you. The system does everything (in other words me >_>). You need at least one ingredient of rank 1 or higher to make a dish because Sera has no reason to chase mundane cuisine when she can make things even better. Your rice is very, very good. So things based off of that are certainly viable. The more spirit ingredients you use the more the dish is "complete". If you pair regular sugar and fruit with the rice it'll be great but it will feel like something is lacking because the quality of most components doesn't measure up.

So we can have a basic vanilla and cinnamon rice pudding :3 delish~ (and make other flavors later)

Edit: maybe ginger? mmmmm

Rasin! Rasin rice pudding always makes me think of winter for some reason.

Edit, looked up rice pudding and found that rum rasin rice pudding exists. I wants to haves it!

So, rum soaked raisins? I know soaking raisins in alchohol is a thing...

Edit: so how about this? Rice pudding made with ginger infused coconut milk, add in some golden raisins soaked in spiced rum, with a little bit of lime zest on top. I figure it'll be a good way to make it somewhat lighter in taste than plain vanilla and cinnamon, has the raisins in it, and will be a good base for fruit later on (like mango)

Also I found this link: Kiribath - Wikipedia

Just as a heads up I am expecting to do a shorter sequence of updates over the course of the weekend for the combat trial. I am aiming to have something out tonight which I will close the vote for at noon the following day and so on. I need to make sure your character sheet is up to date too including some points I am giving to the culinary skills.

Your egg and air creature choices have resulted in the following.

Steel Strider Egg Rank 1 - The eggs of a steel strider, a large, bipedal and vicious bird. It refines metal energy into its feathers and talons until they take on the properties of steel.

Hidden Mist Birds Rank 3 - A medium sized bird about the size of a large chicken, it earned its name from its ability to summon and hide within mist. Difficult to capture, they tend to live long lives and have a rich flavor. It retains moisture very well, which makes it hard to cook poorly.

@Emperor Toast I've been reading your codex alera ck2's and am disappointed that you stopped w/o even the decency of having a vord army open a portal above the empire.

But also this quest is better. More flexible, more novel, more delicious.

T_T my ckii quests always die. I have no idea why I struggle so hard with them. I kind of came into conflict with an author I really liked in that quest and my motivation evaporated.

CKII quests are quite rigid, imo. That might be one reason why.

I've been through that, though as a reader arguing w/ an author as voters in a different quest. It's really awful when it occurs.

I told myself I wouldn't let it get to me but it did and every time I tried to write it, I just couldn't make it work. Writing is hard

True, I can do poems but can barely manage to write 3-page short stories. If I had to do that w/ emotional stress in addition, I'd definitely turn it in at least 4 hours later than I can normally manage.

Generally, I think people recommend projecting your feelings onto the page, coming up with a relevant story, and playing it out there. That way you have something other than negative feelings.

Now we have egg....and peek into possible future foe. :3

Edit: also, Im decent at writing short stories I think....but suck at poetry.

Combat Trial Part 1
Combat Trial Part 1

Sera leaned back against the tree trunk and sighed. She was presently perched about five meters off the ground on a thick tree branch in a forest of tall trees. Solid, sturdy and at least partially obscured from view by leaves, it was as good of a hiding place as she was going to find.

This was the first break she had gotten since the trial had been accepted and the strain of being constantly alert had eaten away at her. The last twelve hours had been a marathon of sorts with lots of running interspersed with brief moments of intense combat and wariness.

Her enemies, so far at least, were manageable. Packs of shadowy dogs with glowing red eyes had attacked her within a few minutes of the start of the trial and had pursued her ever since. A quick whirlwind technique allowed her to scythe through them like so much chaff, but it was unfortunately not a skill she could use continuously. She was forced to reserve it for when she was prepared to break through and run, a strategy that had proven to be viable.

Sera was particularly glad she had chosen to buy the ironwood armor. It could take a hit and protected her well from the snapping jaws of her pursuers, not to mention it regenerated itself over time. The marks left behind by jaws and claws that had raked her torso had ceased to exist.

Withdrawing one of the onigiri she had packed, Sera took a bite, the seaweed cracking with a crunch as it release its saltiness and deep umami flavors. Savoring the rich taste of the sea from the uni and the soft but chewy texture of the rice in the next bite she allowed some of the tension to bleed out and relaxed.

Her physical body was honestly brimming with energy, as there had been a few occasions where she utilized consumer of all to devour a few of the shadowy dogs. The mental fatigue however was a whole different story. That had steadily built up through her journey. Luckily she had come up with a good plan to evade her enemies.

Tracking down a river, she had dived right in and swam away. A few dogs pursued, but they were not very good swimmers and were swiftly left behind. Others followed by running along the river banks. She had hidden at some points behind rocks and outcroppings, and dived to the bottom of the river at others. Steadily she lost pursuers until she managed to leave them all behind.

Exiting the river, she had activated the float function on her boots and moved away as quickly as possible in the hopes of obscuring her scent. So far it seemed to have worked, allowing Sera to enjoy her current break.

Drinking deeply from her canteen, she wished dearly she had been able to bring Yofune with her. His water manipulation abilities would have solved any potential problems with running out of water and he served well in creating openings for her attacks. The little serpent was good company too, always capturing her attention with his ridiculous antics. The system had blocked her pet from coming with her though, likely wanting her to struggle on her own.

Deciding to trust in the rudimentary alarm system she had created with string and bells, Sera opted to take a short nap.

______________________________

She woke up to the smell of smoke and was instantly on alert. Scrambling up the tree, she pushed past the branches to get a panoramic view of the forest. To the east was a raging fire that was rapidly getting out of control. Thick columns of smoke were blowing in her direction and she could see vague outlines of towering figures. To the north were a set of towering mountains with a narrow road cutting through it. Whether or not it lead anywhere useful was up in the air.

Far to the west was a dark shadowy land, filled with murky water and desiccated plants. It definitely looked ominous and she was unsure how dangerous it would be to enter. At the very least the fire likely wouldn't extend past it. To the south was a wide lake, a potential refuge but also quite open. She could swim but fighting water monsters would likely be beyond her skills.

[ ] Head north into the mountains
[ ] Head east into the fire and confront the large figures
[ ] Head west into the dark lands
[ ] Head south to the lake

Forgot to give the dishes for the new ingredients. In case you did not see the post the new ingredients are:

Steel Strider Egg Rank 1 - The eggs of a steel strider, a large, bipedal and vicious bird. It refines metal energy into its feathers and talons until they take on the properties of steel.

Hidden Mist Birds Rank 3 - A medium sized bird about the size of a large chicken, it earned its name from its ability to summon and hide within mist. Difficult to capture, they tend to live long lives and have a rich flavor. It retains moisture very well, which makes it hard to cook poorly.

Mist Bird Oyakodon - Japanese chicken and egg over rice.

As Oyakodon can count for either the egg or bird please pick one of the below recipes to represent the other half:

[ ] Korean Fried Mist Bird Wings

[ ] Coq au Vin

[ ] Soy Sauce Mist Bird

[ ] Tea Eggs

[ ] Egg Tarts

[ ] Chawanmushi

[ ] Write In

[x] Head north into the mountains

As for the next dish...I see your savory custard meal ( Chawanmushi) and raise you a odamaki udon by adding some frost udon into it and making it a chilled custard udon dish. :3

(or we can just make egg tarts)
