Winter is Coming: House Stark Quest

[] Plan King of the Hill
@spudman Could you add these to the plan?
-[] Send ravens to make offers to the Reachmen if they flips for Stannis. Offer the Florents Highgarden and the Lord Paramountcy of the Reach. Offer Tarly the Wardenship of the South.
-[] To the Stormlander lords to get them to join our cause against the Usurper Renly.

How are we supposed to get the offers to Florent, Tarly, or any of the Storm Lords if they're marching with Renly's army?

As for Renly's forces...I am worried about them.

Stannis nearly took King's Landing very quickly. And the Lannisters are even worse off here. But if you're worried about Renly getting there too soon...

The Dawn Guard is an elite cavalry, perhaps they could harass Renly's host but not directly engage. The idea being to slow them down to ensure Stannis has plenty of time to take the city.

Added these bits to my plan.

-[] If they don't accept, storm the city and try to take it as quickly as possible.

Just in case it wasn't clear...we attack fast if the Lannisters don't surrender.

-[] Send the Dawn Guard to seek out Renly's army. Not to directly engage, but to harass them and buy time for you to take King's Landing and secure it.

Stannis nearly took the city very quickly with fewer troops than we currently have and against a more competent defender. We can take the city before Renly arrives. Still, if our cavalry can buy us some time to make it even more likely then sure, why not.

[X] Plan King of the Hill
-[X] You need to take King's Landing as soon as possible. You are already poised to do so, and besides knocking a side out of this war, it secures the Iron Throne. Possession is 9/10ths of the law and the Throne itself is a symbol of legitimacy. You'll take care of Renly, Aegon, and whoever else comes after that.
-[X] If your forces being outside King's Landing is no surprise to Joffrey and the Lannisters offer a promise to Joffrey, Cersei, Jamie, Kevan, etc. of guaranteed mercy if they surrender. This is the word of King Stannis Baratheon and Robb Stark, Eddard Stark's heir. Will they get the same kindness from the Tyrells or Aegon? This is a very limited time offer. If we can take the city without a fight all the better.
-[X] If they don't accept, storm the city and try to take it as quickly as possible.
-[X] Send the Dawn Guard to seek out Renly's army. Not to directly engage, but to harass them and buy time for you to take King's Landing and secure it.
-[X] By the time you would arrive at Saltpans by land or sea the Golden Company would be fully disembarked if that is their plan. You aren't stopping their arrival before it begins...if they're even still there. But you don't want to leave the Riverlands entirely to Aegon's mercy if he's there. Whether he's there or this is part of a larger gambit remains to be seen. Suggest sending a more mobile scouting force there. Perhaps with the Blackfish leading it. Find out what happened. If the Golden Company is there, harry them but avoid a direct fight. If he's not, find out what you can and get word back with all haste.
-[X] Send ravens to Father and the North, informing them of what we know. Ask him to keep a watch on both coasts, and mobilize all he can of the Manderly Fleet (in case the Golden Company decides to land in the North).
-[X] Send ravens to Seagard and any other coastal holding we have, asking them to scout the seas as well as they can, and immediately inform us of what they find.
-[X] Send ravens to Casterly Rock. Inform them of what we know of the Iron Fleet sailing past Seagard south if they aren't aware already. Their coasts may be in danger. You may have no great love for the Westerlands but you wouldn't wish reaving Ironborn on anyone. Also inform him of a possible Targaryen invasion (the Lannisters are their natural enemies, after Tywin's Sack of King's Landing), and tell him we may need his men once the coastal situation is resolved.
-[X] Send ravens to the Vale Lords, informing them of what we know about Saltpans, and advise them to be prepared for the option that the invaders may try to go through the High Road into the Vale. Unlikely, but not impossible.

Also inform him of a possible Targaryen invasion (the Lannisters are their natural enemies, after Tywin's Sack of King's Landing), and tell him we may need his men once the coastal situation is resolved.
-[X] Send ravens to Renly and the Lord of the Reach. Inform them of what we know of the Iron Fleet sailing past Seagard south, and advise them to see to their coasts. Remind them that the Iron Fleet has a shallow draught - if they break through at the Shield Islands, they could sail up the Mander until Bitterbridge. Similarly, they could break through at Oldtown and raid up the Honeywine.
-[X] Send another raven only to Renly, informing him of an invasion by The Golden Company, carrying Targaryen banners, and supposedly led by Aegon and Daenerys. Remind him of the Siege of Storm's End, where Stannis protected him and gave him his rations, when they were besieged by Mace Tyrell - on the Targaryen side. Remind him the Targaryen's will have no mercy for the usurping Baratheons, and advise him to be wary of Tyrell and the rest of the Reach Lords, who might still be loyal to the Targaryens.
-[X] Send ravens to the Vale Lords, informing them of what we know about Saltpans, and advise them to fortify the Bloody Gate and prepare themselves for the option that the invaders may try to go through the High Road into the Vale (unlikely, but still our duty)
-[X] Send a raven towards Saltpans - maybe the castle of Ser Cox held out? In any case, send a wide but closely connected net of outriders and scouts, aiming to discover what happened at Saltpans, where the Golden Company is now, where is it heading, and what are the forces at its disposal.
-[X] Send Stannis' fleet north, towards Saltpans - if the Golden Company did land there, the fleet could blockade the Bay of Crabs, or even attack it and destroy it, stranding it. So much the better if the ships are heavily loaded with provisions/men/horses/elephants. At the same time, advise them to be vigilant - the Iron Fleet might show up unexpectedly at their rear (who knows how many people stole Littlefinger's teleport machine?).
-[X] March north with our army towards Saltpans, aiming to rest the night at Harrenhall (I assume we can reach it without exhaustion, if we can reach the Ruby Ford with exhaustion). When we get there, set up a strong camp and vigilant perimeter.

-[x] Robb will lead a contingent of Cavalry up northwards, being sure to take a crossing that puts him north of the Trident, he will try to be subtle enough that Aegon won't know they are there and use our scouts to cover them under the command of the Blackfish
-[x] Stannis will lead the foot on a march to cross the river at the Trident, send ravens to the houses around the Saltpans, telling them that he is coming across the Trident and to resist the foreign Blackfire invaders. Be obvious in your movements and leave behind a strong garrison in Harrenhall, try to lure Aegon to attack you there, perhaps let some of your scouts be 'captured' to make sure he knows.
-[x] If Aegon contests you there have Robb smash him with the Cavalry when he begins to engage. Make sure to try and create stake pits ready for the elephants when you get there.
-[x] If Aegon doesn't meet you at the Trident try and harass him with your cavalry advantage and tear apart any forces that try to meet up with him, try to attack him in a weak position or trap him to make him fight you.

People, again, Randyll Tarly isn't going to turn on the Tyrells at this point. The Tyrells still have a reasonable chance of victory, and until their prospects look bad he's not going to turn on them - people don't turn on their liege lords unless they think they can get away with it. And as spudman points out we're not going to be able to contact them while they're marching with Renly's army anyways.

Any thoughts on sending the Dawn Guard to slow Renly down (but not outright engage)?

Maybe to sabotage the Roseroad however they can. I'll definitely add that.

-[] Send the Dawn Guard to delay Renly's army. Not to directly engage, but to harass them, sabotage the roads and bridges they travel on. Whatever it takes to buy time.

It might not even be necessary.

Or...hm...I'm looking at a map of Westeros, but it isn't clear if the Rose Road would require Renly to cross the Blackwater to actually get to King's Landing or not. If there is a crossing it would be right on the city's doorstep and the symbol for King's Landing on the map kind of obscures the river.

If there are bridges that Renly would need to cross then I could add a part about taking care of them to slow him down a bit...even if it would only slow him down when he's nearly upon us.

There's only 2000 of them, I don't think they could slow down at least 60,000 men by themselves unless Robb leads them. Even then it seems risky, I'd prefer to send them to harass Aegon's 10,000 and use scouts to keep track of Renly (Renly and the Reach are known for being slow and the opposite of subtle on the March) but aside from that I agree with your plan

Here's to hoping Cersei hasn't had time to prepare any Wildfire and Wildfire accessories. That woman just ain't right.

Added these bits to my plan.

Stannis nearly took the city very quickly with fewer troops than we currently have and against a more competent defender. We can take the city before Renly arrives. Still, if our cavalry can buy us some time to make it even more likely then sure, why not.

The issue here is that Kevan Lannister is guaranteed to be the Hand of the King, and in charge of the defenses of King's Landing by this point. Unlike Tyrion, Kevan is both intelligent and experienced, and while Tyrion managed to muster at least an attempt at a defensive, Kevan will be able to do far more than that. I fully expect taking the city will be vastly more difficult due to his presence.

There is also something we need to keep in mind. Without Tyrion to suggest using the Wildfyre in a fireship to cripple Stannis's fleet, Cersei was going to have it thrown from the Walls in the ceramic pots. Now, I don't expect Kevan to be that stupid, but he's not as innovative as Tyrion either, which means he'll likely use catapults to launch them over the walls. A direct assault of King's Landing has a very real possibility of seeing the entire city go up in unquenchable flames that burn everything they touch.

We need to force Kevan to come to terms and surrender the city as peacefully as possible. He's the best Lannister to negotiate with, as he's fully aware of the precarious position he is in, and he's not an ambitious or foolhardy man.

People, again, Randyll Tarly isn't going to turn on the Tyrells at this point. Ah, but in fact we do have means of contacting Alester Florent. His younger brother Axell is Stannis's castellan of Dragonstone. Not only that, he's loyal to Stannis through and through. Use Axell as our man to contact his brother Alester, by raven or in person if need be, and then contact Randyll through Melessa. Randyll isn't going to turn on them at that point, because Melessa will be complicit in House Florent's "plot".

I honestly do believe you're underestimating the degree to which Renly's support has changed. He no longer outnumbers Stannis 20 to 1, and Stannis is massively more experienced in terms of battle and ruling. People without a personal anchor to Renly are not going to be at ease with those odds, and the possibility of being on the losing side is much, much more dangerous with Renly than Stannis. Renly will treat every as if at court...Stannis will not. Ever. And everyone knows it.

I think Kevan would realize just how monumentally stupid using wildfire would be. That it's just as likely to burn all of them up. If it's used at all it would be sparingly. And our numbers advantage is much better than in canon. We take some losses as long as we keep up the attack.

As for the Florents, what kind of timeframe do you think we're on? If Renly's close to King's Landing, I doubt there's actually time to subvert the Florents or Tarly. If he's not close and there is time, then we have time to take the city.

Melessa and Alester getting a message doesn't make them complicit in anything on its own. They could just scoff at the offer and stay with the army they're already with.

Didn't Tarly kill a lot of the Florents in the Reach army after they tried to defect to Stannis? And this was after Renly was killed so they didn't even have a contender for the Throne.

Yes, yes he does;
Randyll Tarly

After the parley with Stannis beneath the walls of Storm's End, Lord Randyll counsels attacking Stannis to make sure he gains no strength while Renly is away.[11] Randyll and Lord Mathis Rowan discuss tactics for the upcoming battle. Before it can take place, however, Renly is assassinated.[12] Afterwards, Randyll continues to follow the Tyrells in forsaking Stannis's cause.[13] He captures Renly's stores at Bitterbridge and puts a great many men to death, mainly those sworn to House Florent, his wife's family.[14]

This is an indicator that Randyll Tarly is loyal to House Tyrell, not to House Florent. This idea to flip him isn't going to work out.

15. The Brothers Baratheon
It was a strange thing, not knowing what awaited you. You had grown used in the battles of yesterday to a certain excellent among your scouts, thanks in no small part to your mother's uncle and the band of Crannogmen he had made his own since your passage through the Twins. You knew nothing of the Targaryen invaders. Not where they were, nor what they intended. A tide of rumors seemed to come from every direction. They had sacked and burned Riverrun and Winterfell already (you snorted at such nonsense), or were not Targaryens at all, or planned to join with Stannis or Renly or the Greyjoys.

Un-bloody-likely.

And so you had marched. Uncertain but determined. Stannis Baratheon would rule over the Seven Kingdoms and no treasonous brothers or foreign wyrms would stand in his way. You would see him on the Iron Throne and wed his daughter as had been promised. And then your people could be safe.

---

The kneeling man was a dead one. Lord Beric Dondarrion had met his end at the hand of the Mountain. There had been too many accounts of the event for it all to be hearsay. Yet somehow here he was, with a few dozen men beside him. You recognized some of them, the survivors of father's guard. You had thought them lost.

"Your Grace," he greeted Stannis in a voice more tired than you had heard. On his right was a tall, fat man who wore a red cloak over his armor. On his left a boy with pale-blonde hair and strangely determined eyes. Thoros of Myr and Lord Edric Dayne of Starfall.

It was a fortuitous arrival. Not only because these survivors would join your ranks, not only because they had survived a great ambush and weeks in the Riverlands without friends, but because a Lord of Dorne was now in your custody. Ned Dayne would be treated with courtesy and respect of course, but none could deny he was a tool at this time.

Because the Martells were marching, and they did not pledge their loyalty to either brother Baratheon. Stannis had, on your council, sent the offer to House Yronwood. Betray the Martells, as they had again and again for the Blackfyres, and he would name them the Lords of Dorne. An elevation over their former foes few could resist.

Anders Yronwood had not resisted. He was not a rash or greedy man, you had heard from those who had known him, but perhaps the author was just too tempting as Prince Oberyn prepared to lead a host north through the Stone Way to support... someone. Obviously his so called nephew, whatever he had planned to say.

The Lord of Yronwood had prepared a trap for his liege lord's brother. To pin him in the Stone Way between the pass' walls and the host of the Bloodroyal. Instead the Red Viper had seen through his treachery and put a spear through the man's throat and set to finishing the job he had begun as a young man.

Prince Doran's firstborn son was Lord of Yronwood now, wed to his foster sister (the last of her House's main line).

---

Morale was low as you neared King's Landing. The Manderlys had dispatched their own fleet to reinforce Stannis' navy, but a storm had prevented any approach to the city by sea. And you still had not a clue concerning the whereabouts of the Greyjoys, Targaryens, and Martells.

And then you had seen it on the horizon. Smoke.

A great column of smoke so massive it could have swallowed White Harbor as easily as a bird swallowed a worm.

And beneath it a city in flames.

---

Outside the walls of what had once been King's Landing, you met with the court of Joffrey Waters and learned what had happened. You learned that Lord Kevan had received your offer and disregarded it. He had hoped, it seemed, that your host might meet with Renly's leaving you both sufficiently weakened for the city to hold.

The Queen had been equally disinclined. The dissenting voice had been King Joffrey himself. He had remembered the trial of Eddard Stark. He had remembered the fate of his grandfather's host, seen his uncle's ugly stump of a hand and no doubt pictured a similar disfiguration in place of his neck. And he had remembered House Stark's mercy.

And so he had ordered the city's surrender.

An order his regent and Hand had refuted of course. But by then it was too late. Word spread throughout the city that their king hoped to abandon them. That he wished to open the gates to another sack. Another rape of King's Landing, this one by consent of its monarch. That had been the start of the riots.

All of which might have been contained, if the King and his court had been in the Red Keep. But they had not been. Cersei had thought to present her son before the smallfolk to assuage their fears and dispel any "false rumors" of his wavering certainty. Seven Knights of the Kingsguard (including two newly named) had not been enough for the mob.

Joffrey had died quickly. And the fires had spread.

And spread and spread and spread. Spread until they had reached some remnants of Aerys Targaryen's legacy. You listened to Ser Jaime's story, gawking at the hideous burns which now covered most of his body. The Kingslayer had but one arm, but had grabbed his younger son and ridden so hard to safety that he had killed his horse doing so.

And he had left his sister to die to do so.

Tommen was unconscious, with a single ugly burn over his eye. It would never leave him, but he may live. The same could not be said of roughly one half of King's Landing's population. Hundreds of thousands of refugees would need to be located elsewhere or they would turn to banditry or starve.

Thus was the state of things when Ser Kevan Lannister (himself in decent shape although suffering from a twisted ankle and two somewhat mortified sons) formally renounced any claim of Cersei Lannister's bastards to the lineage of House Baratheon and surrendered the former royal court into King Stannis' custody.

As for the Kingslayer...

"Execute him," ordered King Stannis. "Whatever heroism he can claim, he is an oathbreaker and a traitor to every king he has ever served." You stepped forward, frowning. "A crime has had paid for with his hand, his sister, his son, and his skin. The innocents killed here today are on his head, just as those living are because of him."

[] You are right to execute him.
[] He should be showed mercy (write-in).

As King's Landing burned, the army of the northern kingdoms stirred. The city of kings had burned to ashes, taking the Iron Throne with it. More than that, almost three hundred thousand innocents had died screaming. Why? For the madness of the Targaryens. For the greed of the Reachmen, who had sided with Aerys then and with the usurper now. The usurper Renly, who had betrayed his oaths and his people to satisfy his inhuman greed. A greed he had learned from the pernicious and scheming Reachman.

The men marched. As they marched they sand a song of vengeance and heroism. The evil that threatened their country would be broken. They were the soldiers of Westeros, and Westeros was under the protection of King Stannis and Prince Robb (a title the men had adopted even if Stannis cracked a tooth to hear it).

Then had begun the defections. Lord Randyll Tarly had been first, accepting your offer when the Florents seemed too cowardly. Your spy had been found, confessing all under torture, but it had been too late as the Lord of Horn Hill and his army began to withdraw from Renly's host.

More would follow as news of King's Landing spread. Renly's host was horrified. They had never anticipated a tragedy of this scale, nor the masterful propaganda that had painted them as somehow responsible. The army began to bleed men. A small number at first, then dozens. When Ser Garth Hightower broke his ties to Renly and made for Oldtown with his father's men, the floodgates opened.

All while the Lord of Storm's End sat, paralyzed by shock and confusion. Frozen to the moment that Stannis' army slammed into a collapsing host which once had dwarfed any seen since the Dance. Renly did his best to rally the men, but they had been broken long before and the armies of King Stannis were beyond weakness. They had justice and faith on their side.

Hours later, you joined Stannis as he looked over two bodies found within the killing field. Lord Renly was handsome still in death, with the Knight of Flowers beside him. Among the captured was Ser Garlan Tyrell, Brienne of Tarth (heir to Lord Selwyn), Renly's former Queen Margaery, and a few dozen Lords of both regions.

"I do not know why my brother chose them over me, Stark. I do not wish to know what he thought as he died." His face was grim, even for him, and he would not meet your eyes. "I do not wish to look upon the Reachmen any further. See to it that the matter is handled. Then we shall move to crush the rest of our enemies."

House Tarly will be named the Lords Paramount of the Reach and Wardens of the South as per your promise (sucks to be a cowardly Florent shit who wouldn't join up), but the Tyrells remained in your custody. Perhaps the girl could wed Dickon Tarly (after a dose of moon tea). A part of you might feel inclined to mercy, for some members of the family and for some Stormlanders. A part of you also doesn't really care.
