Well there's two factors that this plan hinges on.
One Hida-chan really wants you dead, and two if she loses a duel, then her accusation is proven false. Jubei is wagering that once Kyoko or Yukiko says that Megumi is her champion that Hida Tachimiko will jump at the chance to kill Megumi once and for all...even if by status she has no real reason to.
Okay... but we're Kakita, and she knows we're Kakita. If we duel her, she'll straight-up die, and she knows that. She wouldn't walk into that seeking our blood unless it was actually her own death that she was seeking

We love her brother, and do not wish to cause him this pain, but if we don't kill her, she's going keep coming after us, and she *will* be a problem for the mission. Nothing short of death (or certain very specific kinds of grave dishonor) will stop her from hunting us. I suspect that this mission will lead to her death one way or the other - *especially* since she's started to go bad. Based on what I'm seeing, she'd absolutely throw in with the Kolat if that meant she had an opportunity to kill us.

I have a plan that I'd *like* to offer. We dangle some duel to the less-than-death in front of her, but make it so that she could kill us "by mistake" with a bit of effort on her part and deny it afterwards. She goes for it because it's an opportunity to kill us, but she's pretty much guaranteed to live herself. We leverage our ridiculously higher ability at dueling to defeat her soundly, and then somehow leverage that into getting her to leave us alone.

The problem with that plan is that any form that works would require leaning on her Honor pretty significantly, and I have a feeling that she doesn't have very much of that right now - especially when it comes to her hatred of us.

Really, this is two questions. "Do we try to cut her off the board right now", and "If you don't, how do you get out of the city?" I don't really have a good answer for the first right now, and am thus not prepared to answer the second.

Anyone else have thoughts on kill vs don't?

Well alternately, Tachimiko thinks that she has something that can defeat your Kakita ability...
Okay, sure, but this is Jubei's plan... which means that either he thinks she's going to just be dumb, or he thinks that she'll have some ability that will make her think she can win while *also* not actually making her able to win, or he thinks she has some ability and he's perfectly happy with the outcome that has one of his clanmembers kill us off and hopefully get on the road to recovery from the dishonor that her vendetta has dipped her in.

...not that any of this make it any *easier* to come up with a good answer to "What do we do about Tachimoko?"

Well Jubei does need Tachimiko to loose so his plan is a little more complicated than that.

If she's fallen........

Well, we have a duty to the Empire.

You know, if we do this right, she can die as an honorable woman.

Changing vote.

[X] Straight up duel Hida Tachimiko and get the accusation lifted.

Worth noting - if we have someone else set up the duel, and serve as their champion, it's putting their life on the line as well as our own. Also, it's going to be tricky for any bushi in the party to pull off claiming us as their champion without making themselves look bad.

-[X] Ask Bayushi-sama to set it up, with us as the hachet "man".
Questioning this subvote its not clear what you're expecting Bayushi to do. Normally you'd use Kyoko or Yukiko to set this up and we'd be their champion. So it seems either you forgot we can't champion for Sora or you've got something more sophisticated in mind.

Edited.

I removed the Sub-vote. It was stupid.

Still, I was thinking, Sora as a high ranked Scorpion knows and can advise us on the way to get it happening rather smoothly.

I did forget the Bushi thing, though. Also, given that it seems that Hida Tachimiko has fallen, and it could be seen as saving our ex-love's family, if we kill her in the Duel.

So... I don't recall how much she's been told about the mission, but we do know that she'd heard at least something of it, and has been training furiously for this. She's *probably* not able to advance as fast as we have with our unasked-for "burn your life for power" thing. The fact that we've picked up a couple more duel-supporting techniques (one that gives us a few more unkept dice to attack, the other which lets us spend a void to ignore reduction on that oh-so-critical first strike) is a nontrivial thing too.

yeah... I'm going to trust that Jubei knows how to make this happen. Given that... well, it would hurt Katsui terribly, but this thing with Hida Tashimoko seems like it's only going to end only in her death or ours. There's a lot of things here that could hurt him terribly. More to the point, we have a Duty here. Hida Tashimoko is not going to stop hunting us. Even if we get out of the city, she *will* follow us, and that sort of complication is going to make any attempt to get the princess to safety that much harder, especially if she loses herself enough to dishonor to throw in with the Kolat, which is a very real possibility. It'd be nice if this were the honorable thing, but it's not even that. Tempting a still-somewhat-honorable samurai into a duel so that you can butcher them isn't honorable, no matter what the school you were trained in likes to pretend. It's just ugly and necessary, and doing it now with a sham of a duel rather than on the road against whatever it is that she brings to bear against us makes it that much more likely that we can get this whole thing done successfully, rather than dying in a ditch with the others that we've drawn into this.

In traditional Samurai style, killing her in a way that conceals her dishonor, even if we loose face, is protecting the rest of her family, and is honorable.

Yeah... but we don't *know* that she's fully dishonorable. We've just seen some indications that she's not as honorable as she should be, and that we're her weak point vis-a-vis such things. We're not killing her for dishonor, or to save her family the shame. We're killing her because having a blood-crazed trained huntress after us is *inconvenient*, and there's a pretty good chance that she's going to attempt to kill us (again) at some point.

Now, it's not as ugly as it sounds, because in this case that "inconvenience" could lead to the failure of the mission and/or the death of our friends - and Duty is a thing, as is Loyalty. Still, let's not pretend that it's more honorable than it is. Honesty is also a thing, and it must begin with the self.

True.

So, let's investigate. Then, we act.

Can we vote for that? @gman391?

The investigation sounds wrong to me. What are we expecting to turn up in a day? Indisputable proof she's tainted? The identity of the true summoner?
Anything being turned up by our investigator less, courtier less group is extremely unlikely in just one or two days. However it's an extra day when the magistrates are hunting for our
Thrane.
This is the classic Rokugan Bushido paradox: get stuff done right or get it done honourably.

Okay first, there will be no update this week due to travelling and the fact that I got sick over the weekend when I planned to do the update early. (Better now though. So update next week, thinking Tuesday or Monday, sorry about that.

And now a tally.

Arc VI: A Rival's End
--Duel Hida Tachimiko

In the end, no matter how you turned it around in your mind, it came back to one thing. Hida Tachimiko, hated you with a pure and undying passion that would see her follow you through all nine realms in order to kill you. As much as you still loved Katsuie, there was no way that you could see that would have Tachimiko give up her grudge. Which, given the mission you were on meant that you had to deal with her sooner rather than later. To have the Empire break into civil war because you hadn't wanted to hurt your former lover? That was beyond selfish.

"Brother Jubei, do you think I can take her?" You ask quietly.

"I do...it won't be pretty but I think you can do it."

"Then get me into a duel with her, prove her accusations wrong, and the Gaijin can just walk out of the city....Iuchi-sama or Isawa-sama would work best."

Kyoko frowns, but in the end nods.

"I'm having Iuchi-san look you over and give you a clean bill of health first. Then you can go murder a woman." Sora says.

Murder...honourable murder...you wish Grandmother was here to tell you what to do, but she's gone, for the first time, you are truly alone inside your own head. You push that thought to the side and nod towards Sora.

"Hai Bayushi-sama"

Yukiko gives you a clean bill of health quickly, although she does think you should ease back into fighting, she does think you're ready to go if you need to. With that done, Sora orders Kyoko to go with you to piss off Hida Tachimiko, and likely the Shiba as well...but you'll get to that when you come to it.

Tachimiko as it happens is in a simple tea house nibbling on rice cakes when you approach her the heavy straw cloak and hat are unusual, but you never really cared for Crab fashion. When she senses your presences the Hida woman looks up and glares at you....and something is different, your senses can tell that, tell that there is something deep inside Tachimiko that has fundamentally gone wrong. She truly has fallen then...may Katsuie forgive you.

Kyoko moves to speak, but Tachimiko forestalls that with a single raised hand.
"I know what you're here for...let's get this over with."

She doesn't sound angry, she doesn't even sound upset, she sounds resigned. This isn't right, you know Tachimiko, not as a friend, not as a sister or even by reputation, but you know her as an enemy does, and that is almost as intimate. You know that Hida Tachimiko, should be leaping at the chance to kill you, restraining herself only through iron will.

There's really only one response to that.
"...Who are you?" You ask quietly.

"I am Hida Tachimiko, your executioner." She says simply.

She stands and moves outside gesturing you to follow her. While you're still confused, you do so, hand not quite resting on your sword, even as the tension ratchets.

"Hida-san...what is wrong?" You try again.

The other woman laughs.

"Tell me, what do you think is going to happen? That I'm going to tell you all my secrets just because you asked nicely? No Sakura, if you want answers, then you will have to win."

She pulls out a sheet of paper, and places on the ground by the building tossing her straw cloak and hat on top of it. Underneath, Tachimiko is wearing full battle armour, twin kanabo weapons sliding into her hands. Kanabo were something between a Tetsubo and a simple hand staff, lacking the power of the tetsubo and the versatility of staves, these short clubs were typically disdained by people who preferred heavy weapons. Yet it seems that Tachimiko is supremely confident in their abilities...and you note grimly that it makes her formidable defences even tougher.

"That sheet contains a full confession that I was wrong, that the gaijin is innocent...but you only get it if you kill me Sakura. Are you ready?"

You place your hand on Sakiyarumei.
"If there is no other way then Tachimiko."

This wasn't a formal duel, you wouldn't be waiting for to take her stance and the draw. No by taking out those kanabo Tachimiko had told you what this was. A messy brutal fight in the street that would end with one of you dead.

You had no intention of letting her get the first blow. Drawing on your inner chi, you release your blade in two quick strikes. The ground in front of you is cut as the invisible blades of air leap out to strike Tachimiko in the face...only for her to simply take the blow without flinching. True you hadn't put your full power into it...

Oh shit!

She charges at you swinging those twin weapons at your skull hard. You manage to block one with your sword...but the other clubs your shoulder as you try to dodge. It's not a wound that will stop you, but it is a wound that will slow you...damn.

You strike at her again, your katana scores a grazing hit against her, and then you make a calculated feint on the backswing. Your eyes looking towards her hand....and your blade digging deep into the slight chink in her armour around her waist.

With a grunt you push back, blood flowing on the street as Tachimiko looks down for a moment.
"Huh...that'd kill lesser samurai...but you'll have to do better than that Sakura"

She swings one kanabo against you, you try to block, but it gets through slamming into your skull. The world spins, as you feel the concussion take hold. It hurts, you can't focus. Why is everything moving upside down? You can't attack like this. Instead you slide into a defensive stance and close your eyes, relying on your other senses to block two more attacks.

Yet she doesn't relent pushing you back as you try and fail to block the next set of strikes. You reel back as the feeling of weightlessness sends you through the air. Landing a dozen feet away from her, you realize if you hadn't focused your chi just so, that would have killed you...you can't let that happen again.

So you draw deep, and unleash the full might of Kaze no Kami's lesson on her. The steel armour she wears, crack and buckle under the force of your chi, deep cuts erupting along her side and chest.
She charges forward again slamming her kanabo into your skull.

Yet...this time, this time you are ready for it and shake it off as you strike at her again. Your blades hurt her more now, but it's not enough, it's not nearly enough.

With a roar Tachimiko slams into you, trying to break your defence, yet, for all her seeming ignorance of her wounds...she still feels them, the steel studs hurt as they destroy part of your arm, but they aren't the world shattering blows that you know they could be.

Pushing back, you look at her, she nods, you both know this will be the last attack. The culmination of a vendetta one way or another. You charge and strike. Her blows never come as you collapse to one knee the fatigue of the battle finally catching up to you.

You turn around, raising your weary blade once more. Tachimiko is on the ground, with one blow you could kill her...the choice is yours. Yet it is no choice at all...you will not insult her by letting her live.
Sakirayumeri comes down on Tachimiko's head.

It is finished...and as you collapse on to Kyoko, you make sure to remind her to get the letter.
