Arc 10: Post 85: Sweet Baited Snare New
Sweet Baited Snare

20th of Abadius 4708 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The bed chamber is connected to what must once have been a washroom, though only bare stone remains with greenish stains the only sign that once bronze fixtures were part of the whole. Anippe wonders faintly if they had been looted and you can see her try to summon the anger that is expected of her at the thought of the Founder's things being stolen, but her heart is not in it. Mina perhaps notices too as she points out that they had most likely not been looted, but reclaimed to use in some other function by the guardians. After all, its' not as though there is any reason for Nex to have seeded his refuge with ores.

Regardless, the the chamber makes her gasp and mayhap Sirim would have done so too, had he not been still riding around in Cob's head, for books uncounted line the shelves, some bound in gold or silver, some set with jewels, some draped in dragon's leather with the snarling visage of the wyrms upon their covers, and some stranger still: of slate the tomes of dwarves, cut so fine as to be translucent, and elven scrolls which seem to have been grown from a single leaf wrapped around a stem still green. Like fire burned the script of a thousand nations, all without doubt vanished from the earth, their contents precious beyond hope of reckoning, and all unguarded for why would they not be. T'was clear the master of this place had fled in haste and left only such insight in the mind of the constructs as would keep the dim things holding back the dead.

Anippe is the first across the threshold, eyes wide in more than childish wonder, for is she not a wizard too, hers the same arts as long vanished Nex? Mina settles in a chair, a book of black-leather in hand while Cob picks out what seems to be a bestiary, festooned with the savage grins. Even Oriel, who had been ill at ease since you had come here, seems to have found some assuredly holy text to peruse, though it's hard to pay attention to such things when the tome on the leftmost shelf there is not only written in the tongue of the High Realm, but promises 'The Secrets of the Stars and of the Fates'.

Akorian: 1d20+9 = 10
Anippe: 1d20+5 = 18
Cob: 1d20+10 = 15
Gorok: 1d20+8 = 17
Mina: 1d20+10 = 24
Oriel: 1d20+2 = 12
Sirim: 1d20+6 = 9
...
Pepper: 1d20+7 =
25

The feeling of small sharp claws digging into your legs wakes you as if from a feverish dream and you awake to discover that all your friends are sat upon cold stone benches in a room quite bare of any tomes, the shelves lined only with dust and chains of brass had coiled around your legs to hold you fast... other than Sirim that is, he has no legs to bind. Wait... when did his spell run out?

You had apparently been the last to wake up, with Gorok already measuring out his own chain for a blow from one of the adamantine blades. In the door beyond the library you hear the clank of mechanical constructs and realize the jailers of this place had figured out that their prisoners had exchanged one cell for another.

Number of Hours to Wake (1d6): 3
All PCs, beside Sirim, are Entangled and under the effect of Dimensional Anchor
Chains have a hardness of 20 and HP of 70

The sound of breaking chain is sure to summon them, sure as cave spiders to the sound of struggling prey, and you are all ensnared.

How do you get out?

OOC: Well... that was some bad luck. I wasn't expecting you guys to fail against that trap that bad. If even one of the spellcasters had made their save they could have used their magic to cast dispel to suppress the trap and hopefully get you out before the constructs arrived, Cob could have used his psionic powers to go around the enchantment to a degree, etc... but since the only person who managed to get through was a familiar with only the option to turn the rest of you into scratching posts to get your attention you got stuck here for several hours. Fortunately the constructs do not seem to mind this state of affairs, after all you are all bound, right?

Shit! That's a freaking high level trap. A DC 25 Will save is crazy, and it must have been completely hidden from magic if none of our people spotted any magical auras.

The caster level for this shit is going to be ridiculous. We would probably be wasting our energy trying to Dispel it.

Okay, we have some options here. Just got a think of the best way to handle it.

Well shit, that could have been our 'rocks fall, everyone dies' moment if that trap was more lethal, and even then it could still be.

I'm really annoyed we had no rerolls available to us, nor spot anything.

What is the idea behind dispelling the dimensional anchor? To teleport out of the cell?

It would allow those of you capable to teleportation which with Mythic powers is most spellcasters and Cob to just teleport out which is faster and quieter than hacking at the chains

It's more that the illusion worked by messing with their perception... including perception of magical auras, full sensory experience.

There is some stuff we could attempt to get out of this. Mina and Kori could cast Free Spirit spells on themselves:

They could also cast Liberating Command on Cob, the only one with a high enough Escape Artist bonus to make the spell worth trying as a target:

The problem with these options is that we have a lot of people Entangled, and each attempted casting forces a Concentration check that could burn Mythic power on a failure. There are also spells like Break and Liquefy that could deal with a single chain, but we have too many people who need to be free.

Sirim is not Entangled, though, and he can cast a very useful spell for this situation, Quieting Weapons. That will prevent the dagger from making any noise as Gorok uses it, and it lasts a very long time, meaning Gorok will be able to use it to free everyone.

[X] Gorok tries to sunder the chains
-[X] But first he attempts to cast Lead Blades on the Adamantine dagger, and Sirim casts Quietening Weapons on it to prevent the nearby Constructs from hearing any commotion.

So far Nex has proven himself a remarkably tolerant soul by the standards of arch-mages whose domain had been trespassed into, but who knows...
Nex seems pretty chill. But that's to be expected from a guy who offered his unsuccessful assassin a seat in his own government.

His page says he was fond of puzzles and riddles. I wonder if we get to see any of them here.

OK, lets see how good the constructs perception is. Vote closed.

In Ward's Light

20th of Abadius 4708 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

Sirim does, something to the dagger in Gorok's hand such that when metal strikes metal it does so not with a clang but in eerie silence. Once, twice, three times and four the iruxi strikes the chains wrapped around his legs and it seems like you are to once again slip though the eye of danger and into safe harbor, or some such nautical expression. Then the chains start to rattle, Gorok stops and looks up at Sirim who returns it with a almost offended glance down, his spell of course could not have failed... so it did not, but the works of Nex are not lightly deceived. It rattles again louder and without touch as the squat form of the spider construct, the same you had seen earlier or another you could not tell, lurches into the doorway.

Gorok is no longer Entangled
Construct Perception (DC 25*): 1d20+7 = 26 (Success)

*only residual enchantment

Anippe tries to say something, but the thing doesn't answer with words, instead each turquoise gem upon its surface flares with eye-searing light, so bright you swear you can see it even though your upraised arms, though that might just have been the after-image. No sooner had the spider done its damnedest to blind you that it scrambles up the wall and onto the ceiling, still afire like some bizarre chandelier in an Augustana parlor. Behind it through the door is a pair of more martial constructs, each bearing a weapon halfway between an axe and a longspear... one of which is aimed directly at you.

Akorian Reflex Save (DC 18): 1d20+8 = 17+3 = 20 (Success)
All PCs Dazzled

Yet where edged steel should have been carving through your flesh you only feel the air being forcefully expelled from your lungs as the constructs now begin to blare what you can only assume is a demand to surrender yourselves back into the debilitated prison, with its now broken locks. Part of you wonders if they would simply try to put Cob back into the cell he had escaped from once before. A voice in the back of your head insists that that's a better prospect than being slammed with that thing again. Between its whirring limbs you can see its fellow had managed to press Gorok into the wall opposite and with its clamp like hands tear the dagger from his hand.

Clockwork Soldier 1 Attack: 1d20+18 = 27 (Success)
You Take 19 Non-Lethal Damage
Clockwork Soldier 2 Disarm: 1d20+18= 27 (Success)
Gorok is Disarmed

Well, you console yourself, at least if we beat these ones we will have more weapons than just what Cob managed to smuggle up here. As comfort goes it's about on par with the hard stone bench you are still sitting on.

"They will continue to try to take us alive until some threshold of harm is passed," Sirim opines as he drifts up wards, though into the corner farthest from the spider. "My advice would be to arrange it so that as many of them as possible fall one after another before they can react to changed directives."

Gorok is obviously much too busy to argue, but from the look in his eye such as you can see it squinting though the light he would very much like to.

[] Write in combat plan

OOC: Hope you guys don't mind me using one of Kori's mythic surges there, it would have been a very short update to end it there but at the same time letting him get blinded would have made him much less able to contribute to the battle.

Ugh, if it wasn't for such bad rolls earlier this plan would have been going much better in general.

We're on a short timer now, and can't afford to be too stingy with our resources, not if we want to escape before reinforcements show up.

[X] Prison Break
-[X] Sirim uses Wild Arcana to cast Confuse Constructs on the attacking Constructs. Next, he casts Shadow Conjuration to resummon Avarice, this time as a Time Dragon.
-[X] Kori uses Inspired Spell to cast Liberating Command on Cob as an Immediate Action, allowing the Goblin to attempt an Escape Artist check as an Immediate Action with an additional +18 bonus, then uses Inspired Spell to cast Free Spirit on himself. Once free, he casts Searching Shadows, either to help restrain the Constructs in this chamber or to aid Pepper in distracting reinforcements, as the situation dictates.
-[X] Mina uses Wild Arcana to cast Free Spirit on herself. Once she is free, she casts Summon Monster IV to empower Pepper as a Guardian Spirit.
-[X] Gorok expends one Mythic power to use Fleet Charge as a Swift Action to attack the Construct that disarmed him, Power Attacking with his claws, then continues to attack it.
-[X] Cob expends one Mythic power to use Surprise Strike as a Swift Action to Sneak Attack the Construct attacking Kori, then continues attacking.
-[X] Pepper casts Grease through the open doorway the Constructs entered through. As soon as he is empowered, he uses his Greater Invisibility SLA, flies out of the chamber, and acts as a distraction, casting Grease and Create Pit spells to hamper any Constructs that are approaching the group. He uses telepathy to keep them informed of what is happening outside.

[x] Prison Break

Are we out of unfettered shirt uses?

Sounds like Sirim wants us to use disarming moves -- and we can arm ourselves in the process. Although those claws look pretty nasty all on their own.

Well either that or take them out in a single turn by alternating attacks until they are both close to death and then attacking one after another.
