Turn 7:
Meanwhile in Japan:
(Masemune Sakura POV)
Saboro watched the sun slowly crest the horizon, its golden light spilling across the polished wood of the veranda. His silhouette was dark against the glow, his presence unwavering as he took a slow sip of his tea. The steam curled in the morning air, fragrant and deliberate, much like the way he conducted himself.
You stepped inside, your movements precise, measured, calm, but anxious. The reports he had requested rested in your hands, the weight of them heavier than mere paper. You bowed low, offering them forward.
"The Ninjas were called off," he murmured, almost absentmindedly, though you knew better. Every word was calculated, meant to pull at unseen threads. His gaze flickered toward you. "Who called them off?"
You inhaled, steadying yourself before speaking. "My husband." Your voice was quiet, carefully neutral. You moved gracefully to a seat, folding your hands in your lap, keeping your expression impassive. There was no need to say more—to risk provoking him.
But instead of anger, he chuckled.
"Do not lie to me." He set his teacup down with a deliberate
clink against the saucer. "He has been away from home, from his family, from his blood for far too long. He has been tainted by America—by
Night City." He turned toward you, eyes sharp, studying. "Why do you allow him to remain? Why do you allow your husband to dictate what happens to your son?"
The wind shifted. Cherry blossoms stirred from the branches outside, their petals dancing in the air before scattering across the floor of the veranda.
You did not answer immediately. Instead, you watched the sky, the morning still and quiet. There was no point in pretending ignorance.
Saboro exhaled slowly. "Did you really think I wouldn't find out?"
"No." Your voice was firmer now, edged with something unyielding. "But he is not your son."
Silence.
A flicker of something unreadable passed over his expression before he exhaled, a breath laced with quiet disappointment.
"A shame," he murmured. Yet there was something more behind those words—an expectation unfulfilled, a calculation that had not aligned with his desires.
Saboro reached for one of the reports you had brought, his fingers gliding over the fine paper as he flipped through the pages with methodical ease. The rustling sound filled the silence between you, measured, deliberate. Finally, he spoke, his voice even, though touched with something almost resembling curiosity.
"My sources tell me he is far more brilliant than you claim." He did not look up as he turned another page. "That he is capable—a strategist, skilled with a gun, and clever enough to surround himself with allies of his choosing."
At last, his gaze met yours. There was something sharper in his eyes now, something that cut deeper than mere disappointment.
"He trusts them."
The weight of those words settled between you, thick with implication.
Your fingers tightened slightly where they rested in your lap, but you willed them to remain still. "He is careful."
"He is foolish," Saboro corrected smoothly, his lips curling into something resembling a smile, though it never reached his eyes. "He is too young to understand the nature of loyalty. A child gathers companions for comfort, not strategy." He set the report down and folded his hands together. "But he is
not a child, is he?"
Silence stretched between you.
He studied you for a moment before leaning back slightly, his fingers tapping lightly against his cane. "Why have you stifled his growth by wishing him to be another one of you?" His voice was neither accusing nor harsh, merely observant, as if he had already long since decided the answer. "I can gain a million like you… but not one whom I believe can lead this company to the ultimate goal."
He lifted his cup of tea, taking a slow sip before exhaling in satisfaction.
"Do you think he has any other skills?"
You nodded once. "No. Not skills that weren't taught to him by your hired hands and Kenji."
For a moment, there was silence. Then, Saboro chuckled a low, dark sound that sent a chill down your spine.
"I would have hoped he would have gained more from his own ambition, his own skill. Perhaps he
does have something." He paused, his fingers tightening slightly around his cane. "Perhaps he has simply learned to keep it hidden from all of us."
The way he said it made your stomach twist.
Then, as quickly as it came, the thought passed, dismissed as if it was no longer relevant. He let out a quiet sigh, shaking his head.
"It matters not," he said finally. "Soon, he will reveal who he truly is."
And the way he said it made you realize—he did not intend to wait for that revelation.
He intended to
force it.
"I thought we were here to talk about what you desired… not my family?" You asked.
"Indeed." He then pressed the button.
As soon as the prototype doll chip activated, the world around you shifted.
It was subtle at first—like stepping into a room where the air was too thick, too still. Then came the pressure, a suffocating weight pressing down on your mind, wrapping around your thoughts like silk spun too tightly. Your limbs did not feel any different. Your breathing remained steady. But inside, beneath the surface, something had changed.
A wall had risen between your will and your body.
You could still see. Still
think. But you were trapped—locked behind glass, watching yourself move, watching the words slip from your mouth as if they belonged to someone else.
And in this moment,
you were nothing more than a passenger.
"Now… what have we been hiding?"

"Good night my friend." He said with a smile.
