The Architect of Anarchy: A Cyberpunk Crafting Quest

The Crafting Begins.
I was going to start reviewing this story earlier, but illness, work and studies got in the way. Well, no more excuses. Let's get to it.

You always loved discovering how things worked
Science is what truly changes the world. People like Senji are revolutionary figures. And unlike people who claim to be tech pioneers but in fact are just mostly grifters who massively overblow the value of their products, Senji is the real deal. His guns work.

Something special. Something uniquely yours.
I'm going to take a guess and say that Senji doesn't like China very much, and not just because he's Japanese.

That was how you learned. Not from school
You don't go to a school - any school - to learn anything. You do it to acquire a piece of paper that will hopefully increase your chances of building a career. If you want to actually learn something, you'll have to do it yourself. Senji seems to have caught on to this quick. Good for him.

I'm currently in university (part-time). I'm not impressed by it. But again; actual learning isn't the point. I'm just after that piece of paper.

Math, literature, reading comprehension—it all felt like static noise compared to the hum of a soldering iron or the satisfying click of components snapping into place.
Hm. And yet Senji does enjoy some literature, and he has to be skilled in mathematics to some degree.
To be fair, he IS a genius after all. He must be so bored in school.

It wasn't the theory of things that called to you; it was the making
"If you want something done right, do it yourself."
- Napoleon Bonaparte

That was when you knew: this wasn't just a hobby. It was your calling.
"You go into the restaurant business because people are always going to have to eat. That was the day I learned that my destiny lay in fulfilling another basic human need."
- Lord of War (2005)

the gearheads who tinkered in dark corners, forgotten by the rest of the world
Anyone who says that engineers are "losers" should be forced to live in the wilderness with no technology whatsoever.

"I can do more damage on my laptop sitting in my pajamas before my first cup of Earl Grey than you can a year in the field."

"Any idiot can make a sword."

the Megabuildings...those sprawling vertical cities within cities that housed everything from corporate elites to the poorest gutter rats
Mega City One.

Senji is now moving from firearms to armor.
He may be approached - or may decide of his own volition - to start working on vehicles.

fixing their cyberware, tuning their weapons, or crafting armor that might just let them survive a firefight
There is so much more than just a skilled combatant. How many personnel are required to support and supply just one clandestine field operative?

arming them, outfitting them to stand toe-to-toe
I love the idea that being too successful (getting nat 20) can have consequences.

Hope was the most dangerous drug, and you were its dealer.
If Senji were just a genius mechanic and smith, that would be one thing. But he has more than that. He has charisma. A force of personality. He draws people to himself and puts them under his spell, often without fully realizing it.

kept building. Kept dreaming. Kept surviving. Because here, that's all anyone could do.
Never let go of your dream, Senji. Never lose hope, and never stop fighting.

A Lonely Rich Kid...The Street-Smart Scavenger...The Crusading Homemaker
So these are the three possible origins/backgrounds for our current protagonist, and in the end the Lonely Rich Kid was selected.
I'm curious if there is a Street-Smart Scavenger and Crusading Homemaker somewhere in this story.

Your parents are mid-to-high-level corporate climbers in Arasaka, laser-focused on their careers and the endless pursuit of power
Do they even know what it is that they want? What were their own childhoods like?

they handed you over to nannies and robot caretakers
A major theme of the Yakuza game series, across all of the games, is parenthood.

grow up in the cold, sterile halls of a luxurious megabuilding apartment.
Senji's background may ensure that there will be people who will not trust him no matter what he says or does.

They rarely visit, and when they do, it's out of obligation rather than affection
I'm going to say that there are far too many cases in real life in which it would be better for the child if their particular parent (or even both parents) were mostly absent from their lives.

broken gadgets and discarded tech piling up in the building's maintenance tunnels and trash chutes.
And this is supposed to be a luxury apartment. Imagine what the other residential areas are like.

guides like The Anarchist's Cookbook, and a treasure trove of street-level techie manuals
Authoritarian parents should be very careful of what they allow their children to read. My own parents should have never allowed me to actually read the Bible page-by-page when I was little. That book is one hell of a trip. So much murder in it.
Anyone who's actually read the Bible won't be able to attend an evangelical church and keep a straight face throughout the songs and sermons.

Before long, you weren't just fixing things, you were crafting firearms, ballistic armor, and strange little gadgets
So he is self-taught. No one trained him to do this. Senji was born to be a techie.

With so much equipment moving through their systems, one or two missing boxes won't raise suspicion
Had he not turned out to be a techie himself, Senji could have made a living by being an illegal supplier.

that are normally inaccessible to most
Malcolm would undoubtedly have disassembled and examined the new weapons that Senji provided to him.

virtually impenetrable without a coordinated and dedicated assault
I would be more afraid for Senji if it is just one person who is attempting to murder him as opposed to a whole team.

You've grown up rubbing shoulders with the next generation of Arasaka's elite
He's got Stella and Malcolm now, as well as Kenji. But in my opinion Senji needs to build his network. At the same time, the more people he gathers to him, the greater the risk of exposure and/or betrayal. Choose your partners and allies carefully.

Your tinkering hasn't gone unnoticed at school.
Who are the faculty going to find to replace you as the person who is keeping the school from falling apart? By the way, I find it hilarious that practically every day, something needs to be done just to keep the school running.

Your parents have no idea what you're up to
It's not just Senji's parents. Others are now taking note of him, concerned of his having met the person only known as Ghost.

the unsanctioned kind that have you do something crazy like leave the apartment for more then a burger and fries
Everything in the Family. Nothing outside the Family. Nothing Against the Family.

a soulless engineering school that churns out corporate drones
Russian drone design and production is highly centralized, while Ukrainian drone design and production is the opposite.

Outside the corporate bubble, you're just another spoiled corpo brat in the eyes of Night City.
In a way this works in Senji's favor. People aren't going to suspect that this silly little corpo kid swaggering around with a revolver could possibly be the now-legendary Ghost.

Start with zero reputation among all Night City factions. Gaining their trust will require significant effort and proof of your abilities.
Honestly, this may be Senji's greatest hurdle in this story. I don't think he could ever fully escape his background as one of the 'corpo elites.'
The people of the streets despise them, not knowing that for many of these elite-class youths, they too are suffering in their own way.

The Street-Smart Scavenger
Magoose, for my own personal headcanon, I like to imagine that somewhere in Night City, there is a young Polish woman named Miroslawa living a very difficult and unforgiving life on the streets, struggling just to survive day-by-day as a techie. Polish History Be Like.

You learned early on that survival wasn't about having the best—it was about making the best out of whatever you could find.
Growing up on the streets of this place...you'd have to be hard as nails.

You've built your reputation among the street gangs and small-time mercs as the one who can fix anything, or make something deadly from nothing.
Nice, so in this background, the Street-Smart Scavenger already is well-known to the gangs and mercenaries, which is both good and bad.

While others buy shiny new components, you turn scraps into treasure.
Makes me think of the plot of Iron Man 3, where Tony Stark had for some time no access to his lab and needed to make do with what he could find.

a unique ability to "MacGyver" useful tools out of minimal resources or even nothing
How to make a knife.

Living in the streets has given you connections everywhere. Fixers, gang runners, and small-time hustlers owe you favors, and you can always trade your skills for information or supplies.
I'm now imagining Senji coming into contact with the Street-Smart Scavenger; someone who is very similar to him and yet also very different.

Your rough upbringing has honed your instincts. You're hard to surprise and even harder to kill, knowing how to handle ambushes, bad deals, and sudden fights
Senji has done surprisingly well in the concert, but that is clearly not his area of expertise. He is a craftsman, not a fighter. Had he been forced to claw and struggle in the streets of Night City from a very young age, he would be a very different person.

Gain bonuses for surviving raids on your workshop
"Is that a Z-140?"

Your creations work, barely. They're effective in a pinch but prone to breaking or malfunctioning without regular maintenance.
Unfortunately yes. As a street scavenger, you make do with what you can get.

if they fail during missions for contract work, reputation loss is more noticeable
Your name is all you have. I think honesty and frankness is important in that line of work. Make it clear to your customers and clients that your products are short-term effective and that they should not expect them to last very long.

Growing up in the shadows of the corporate towers, you've seen the destruction they bring firsthand. That's left you with a chip on your shoulder
Can't blame them.

corporate clients don't trust you either
Darn it, I just love the idea of Senji meeting the Scavenger and the two of them never liking or trusting each other.

you have no permanent base. Your workshop is wherever you can find space, constantly shifting to stay ahead of rival gangs or local authorities
Again; hard as goddamn nails. Someone who lives a life like this? You gotta respect them just for surviving this far.
But survival may not be the only thing that they want.

Your base/workshop will be constantly raided, not only by corpos and gangsters, or just random people. Every turn you will have to stealth-check if anyone finds your space, and attacks you.
This city is a terrible place. People die all the time. Or worse.
I suspect the Scavenger may be someone who lives by a code; trust no one. Absolutely no one. There are no friends, no allies. Only interests. The Scavenger may have charisma of their own...but they may also be a despicable person who won't hesitate to shoot or stab an erstwhile ally in the back. This isn't someone living in a luxury apartment. Out on the street, it's kill or be killed, and you cannot hesitate, not for even a second.

Senji can find the time to go to class, attend a party, enjoy a concert. I'm guessing the Scavenger doesn't have time for that stuff. Every day is a struggle to survive.

The Crusading Homemaker
In my opinion this is the most optimistic of the three backgrounds, but it also has the most glaring weaknesses/cons.
I see the name given to the person of this background is James Hamilton. That's it, my headcanon is that it's not his real name.

In a city where life is cheap, loyalty is rare, and every relationship feels transactional, you're an anomaly to anyone who has given up hope. Your world revolves around protecting and providing for the people you love.
Having very close personal bonds is both very good and very bad. It's not just your own life that you are responsible for.

You didn't set out to become a gunsmith or armor maker, it was just something you had to do to survive.
Interesting. So the Homemaker may not be as passionate about being a techie as someone like Senji who takes so much pride and joy in his work. Heh, that may tick off Senji; that the Homemaker is just as talented and skilled and brilliant as him in the same field of work, without being anywhere near as passionate about it.

to protect your family or a neighbor
Love is one hell of a motivator...it can make people do wonderful things, as well as terrible. There may be no low that the Homemaker will not sink to, in order to protect the people he loves.

"No one f-ks with my family."

as the dangers of the city grew, so did your determination. Now, you've turned your home into a fortress and your skills into a business, arming others who need to defend themselves against the horrors lurking just outside their doors.
Interesting. So the Homemaker mostly sells security measures? And they seem to sell to people who are more defense than offense-minded.

You're not here to get rich or famous. You're here to make sure the people you care about can live another day.
That is an admirable motivation.

Start with max reputation the local borough you live in, which is randomly chosen
Now I'm imagining Senji being about to enter a borough in Night City, and is told that there is this person who watches over the entire area. Raise a hand against anyone in there, and he will ensure that you pay dearly. Terrible examples are made of anyone who threatens the inhabitants, and even the roughest and meanest gangs now steer clear of the place after he stated - in no uncertain terms - to a group of gangsters that this borough is under his protection.

turning household items into deadly tools and reliable defenses
Now I am terrified.

Your home isn't just a place to sleep; it's a fortress. Reinforced walls, automated turrets, and hidden escape routes ensure it's a safe haven in even the worst circumstances
Hm. But what happens if the Homemaker or anyone else has to leave the borough?

Their safety takes priority over everything else, limiting your ability to take risks or leave Night City behind
Some may say that they are holding the Homemaker back.

You're focused on your local community, which means your reputation doesn't extend far beyond your neighborhood. (Start with zero reputation among major factions or corporate clients.)
So not many connections beyond the borough, be it on the streets or among the elites. Seems like this borough is rather closed off, almost isolationist. They are very close-knit and tribalist and mostly look out for their own. Can't say I blame them. Senji may have great difficulty in just trying to approach them, never mind win their trust.

Between running a business, managing your home, and protecting your family, your time and energy are constantly stretched thin.
It seems that the Homemaker has a limited client/customer base, and will not sell to people they do not trust. Meanwhile, I doubt the Street-Smart Scavenger has as much choice in choosing and picking their customers.

someone even paid for the privilege for me to do it.
This made me smile. I'm so glad this story exists.

While I wont be sad if You Won't Even Know Your Wearing It wins, I think that Trauma Response is more versatile than Reactive Plating. Plating is focused on kinetic damage while Trauma Response covers a broader range. Now admittedly you have to get hurt to get use of it, so that is a minus.

If Senji were just a genius mechanic and smith, that would be one thing. But he has more than that. He has charisma. A force of personality. He draws people to himself and puts them under his spell, often without fully realizing it.
Yep. Its kinda the thing that you are all seeing with the younger Arasaka Kids.

They are following him like moths to a flame. And lets just say that, while he is trying to make things for himself, the high craftsmanship...

THere is a little something else that I think he wants to do. Offer freedom for those that deserve it.
Never let go of your dream, Senji. Never lose hope, and never stop fighting.
I don't think he ever will.
I'm curious if there is a Street-Smart Scavenger and Crusading Homemaker somewhere in this story.
Scav might be there, but the crusading homemaker might not be. That charecter is far to heroic for a world like Cyberpunk.

but hey, I might decide to add that in if I decide.

But the scav is definatly here...
Do they even know what it is that they want? What were their own childhoods like?
All I will say is that dad was a nepo baby with very bad anxiety and other issues...

While mom is just pure evil. Like legitimately has no empathy in her and desires nothing but power, and control over what she wants. Killing her would be doing a favor for not only the family, but maybe cause your family to not be so fucked up.

Grandpa is the only one whom I can call good... but we don't talk about the shit he got up to in Nam. The Vietnemies have horror stories about him and the supposed chemical weapons he used.

Everything bad in this family comes from two things. Your mother's evil.

And your father's inability to show weakness to anyone, especially himself.
I'm going to say that there are far too many cases in real life in which it would be better for the child if their particular parent (or even both parents) were mostly absent from their lives.
Senji has turned out alright, given all the circumstances. Sure he's raised by a Yakuza assassin, but there are worse role models in this city.
And this is supposed to be a luxury apartment. Imagine what the other residential areas are like.
Yep. One mans trash is another mans tresure.
Still a good book to read though.
Malcolm would undoubtedly have disassembled and examined the new weapons that Senji provided to him.
He has... and he does it religiously, because he wants to know how his weapon works to the point where he can use it without even thinking about, blind or disorented.

He's that kind of professional when it comes to his work.
I would be more afraid for Senji if it is just one person who is attempting to murder him as opposed to a whole team.
Even one solo merc like V would have trouble getting through our defenses.
He's got Stella and Malcolm now, as well as Kenji. But in my opinion Senji needs to build his network. At the same time, the more people he gathers to him, the greater the risk of exposure and/or betrayal. Choose your partners and allies carefully.
I mean, we're about to join a big network of mercs that want weapons.

And lets just say, that we will be spoiled for choice.
Who are the faculty going to find to replace you as the person who is keeping the school from falling apart? By the way, I find it hilarious that practically every day, something needs to be done just to keep the school running.
YEp. Why do you think it was a required action for awhile.
Honestly, this may be Senji's greatest hurdle in this story. I don't think he could ever fully escape his background as one of the 'corpo elites.'
The people of the streets despise them, not knowing that for many of these elite-class youths, they too are suffering in their own way.
Doesn't matter about how they suffer... no one on the streets will think a Corpo brat will have suffered. And they would be right.
Magoose, for my own personal headcanon, I like to imagine that somewhere in Night City, there is a young Polish woman named Miroslawa living a very difficult and unforgiving life on the streets, struggling just to survive day-by-day as a techie. Polish History Be Like.
For most of the street scavs... I just put them in, and if they feel narrativly appropriate... I will use them.

Or I kill them.
Makes me think of the plot of Iron Man 3, where Tony Stark had for some time no access to his lab and needed to make do with what he could find.
Yep.
I'm now imagining Senji coming into contact with the Street-Smart Scavenger; someone who is very similar to him and yet also very different.
If that happens they will be trying to kill you. You are competition.
YEp.
Senji can find the time to go to class, attend a party, enjoy a concert. I'm guessing the Scavenger doesn't have time for that stuff. Every day is a struggle to survive.
I wouldn't say that, they can find time to do things. They just have to be far more careful.
I see the name given to the person of this background is James Hamilton. That's it, my headcanon is that it's not his real name.
Or the name he uses like Walter White used Heisenberg.
You would be surprised what it takes to be a home owner in night city.
Now I'm imagining Senji being about to enter a borough in Night City, and is told that there is this person who watches over the entire area. Raise a hand against anyone in there, and he will ensure that you pay dearly. Terrible examples are made of anyone who threatens the inhabitants, and even the roughest and meanest gangs now steer clear of the place after he stated - in no uncertain terms - to a group of gangsters that this borough is under his protection.
welp, now I know how I'm going to start an adventure now. THanks
Hm. But what happens if the Homemaker or anyone else has to leave the borough?
Bad things happen.
I wouldn't say they are isolationists. But they are... cagy of outsiders.

Seeing how close the vote is, lemme try and plug my plan some more. The top plans are all light armor, so the armor is never going to be the absolute best at protection anyways—it's giving a bonus to dodge rolls, not damage reduction. Reactive plating would be better suited for medium or heavy armor that together might be able to stop even the most ridiculous caliber borg guns (mechanically, reducing damage even further). Light armor with trauma response is trying to not get hit, and recovering if we do.

[X]Plan: Healing Second Skin

As soon as I saw the trauma response I wanted to make a" life jacket". This plan but just a torso. This full body one for our own people and a torso to sell would be good too.

I know people are just thinking about the mission but a piece of armor that's designed to save your life would be revolutionary. How much good this could do, how much money we would make.
