Shimmer, Glimmer, & Gleam - A Quest of Loss & Gain

] This slate can be wiped clean, maybe. Ask each of the accused not volunteering to die or leave for their oath to not repeat their crimes and support their new community; exile those who refuse.

i'd like to add that this should be dependent on any *still here* victims being willing to accept them into the community. one should not be forced to share a table with their abuser, we got that one in the posts twice

I'm not sure this can be a hard rule at this point. It's pretty clear that's not going to go for all of them, and that means we just go right back to the same problem for whoever's left. We can't go round in circles on that forever. Although you could write in that the slate gets wiped clean unless a victim present demands blood. That... probably doesn't have more downsides than every other option.

I mean, ultimately every approach here is doomed to fail because all 3 of them are overly simplistic hard rules , any policy of nuance has been eliminated, and the hard line will crack fast.

A system that knows only non-punishment and (quasi)-death sentence is no system at all.

Well, we're not trying to build a system here. I agree, none of these options are workable as a system. None of this can go further than ad hoc. But what we need right now is to sort out ad hoc integration. Yeah, it'll set precedent, but part of that precedent will be 'you talk to people and try to figure out what works as best you can'. Everything ends, everything fails, but Orchid's not got the luxury of eventually right now. Right now what's important is deciding how many of these people are going to be breathing come sunrise, and how to make that number as high as is acceptable.

Well done, Morrowlark! This must've been quite a writing challenge for you. You certainly rose to the occasion. Thank you for incorporating my Hannah into the update.

Actually, I think I'm gonna change my vote to a write-in.

[x] Maybe the slate can be wiped clean, but it can't rest on the honour of the accused. Ask each of the accused not volunteering to die or leave for an oath not to repeat their crimes and to support their new community, but also ask the crowd for sponsors for each accused. A sponsor swears to keep an eye on their charge for a year and a day, to ensure they keep their oath and become joined with the community, and faces an equal share of punishment if they turn a blind eye to any repeated crimes. Any accused who will not swear, or for whom no sponsor can be found, are exiled.

This may indeed pass muster.

seconding that

Been plucking up my courage to actually participate in this quest for a few days now, and now seems as good/bad a time as any.

Fortuna you are cooking. I think that's a very fun narrative shape, and more satisfying than the other options presented.

Ive been reading for a while now and I have to say I love this story so much! Especially the characters and the world, they feel so vibrant and alive.

You're gonna make me blush. Welcome to the party, and I'm glad it's been fun for ya so far! I'll admit I had my doubts when I was getting it going; this is something of a throwback to older days in the format.

Yeah, I'd be willing to do this once per Threshold but no more.
I'd second Kermie here - it's just a lot to deal with. Thanks for putting Threes in there!

This is a good way to do things, I think. At least this time?

It is! And there's trying to honor the spirit of the write-ins, not to mention the work y'all put in to create those write-ins, etc, etc. But on the whole I'm quite happy with how that went. I've often described QMing as the meeting point between running a tabletop game and just writing a damn novel, and sometimes you get an idea that can really...invite people into the roleplaying aspect, as it were.

This is... the only real way it can go here. A sponsor to tie them to the accused, a watcher to help them rise, and both to be sunk if they enable instead. It puts trust here, that those worth a chance are given it by someone, and prevents most of those who cannot at all be trusted from having that branch. From there, its a matter of seeing what happens, and being ready if something breaks.

Well done Fortuna

Damn, I missed the writing exercise.

[X] Stay the course. Marie asked you to kill them, and you're already on a thin limb there. What would she think?

Marie asked for a loving home. And if you don't remove the rot, the entire thing comes down.

Just in time to change my vote!

My warnings summon the voters like opening a can in a house full of cats. Pavlov is rising from his grave to study this.
