Finding the Spark (Pathfinder 1E Quest)

Akorian Perception: 1d20+1 = 10 (Critical Failure)

Now I am going to be curious for a long time to come. Oh well.

Don't want to send the man away. I'd like to know what his interest is and whom he reports to, but if he is staking out the house instead of us, the visitors, it'd take a long time to follow up on this lead. Do we have an in with them through captain Caulker's recommendation, or was it only for a job offer back in Augustana? He said they could use people like us.

It says that who is a foe is dependent on the perceptions of the caster and Kori does not think of the knight as a foe so no it would not break invisibility.
Hopefully the knight is worried and nervous. That will probably have his thoughts racing with all sorts of relevant info.

Arc 7 Post 22: A Face in the Wind
A Face in the Wind

20th of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

What are you thinking? the question is a silent jab into the 'knight's' thoughts... just as solidly repelled. A mantra, an Oath.

We are the wings furled to guard all good folk, we are the talons that tangle the whips of the slave master, we are the clever beaks that unpick the locks of the lowly!

Eagle Knight Cadet Will Save: 1d20+2 = 18 (Success)

His eyes snap up looking around for the source of the attack, though of course there's nothing for him to see. After a moment's hesitation he takes out a green stoppered potion and drinks it in one long gulp, a subtle warding aura clinging to his form. You've a fair guess what that was, for all the good it will do. Another heartbeat passes, three as you slip back and then you simply weave the magic anew from far enough away that the boy had not a prayer of hearing you.

HOLY Talmandor, GUARDIAN of ANDORAN, protect those who walk in your FOOTSTEPS!

Eagle Knight Cadet Will Save: 1d20+2 = 20 (Success)

This time he doe not reach into his pouch for the dubious protection of philters and potions, he starts to walk away, steps too hurried to be casual, not that you imagine he is worried about that at the moment. It's not like a third time's going to scare him any worse than the first two already did. You burn through the last of the band's magic for the day.... only to be rebuffed again.

BEFORE THE NIGHT OF BLOOD AND IRON I WILL NOT FALTER!

Eagle Knight Cadet Will Save: 1d20+2 = 17 (Success)

All attempts at subtlety abandoned, the young knight breaks into a run. He should have closed the belt pouch beforehand. Halfway across the busy street a piece of parchment flutters in his wake unnoticed in the rush to get away from the unseen danger... from you that now catches it. At least that's something to show for this whole sorry chase.

Eagle Knight Cadet Will Save vs Fear: 1d20+3 = 8 (Failure)

Drawing back away from the street into the shadow of a peach tree to inspect it you realize that it's not a note as you had at first suspected, but a sketch. The young woman in it is adorned with all the accouterments of wealth that one might see wandering these very streets, though she does not seem particularly pleased for them.

Underneath are only two pieces of script: Elenora DeVorge, Ninth of Lamashan

'De' means some kind of noble you vaguely recall, either foreign or of one of the deposed Andoran noble families. The date is recent, if it's this year at least. Is there a spell to guess the age or ink or parchment?

"Ah, Akorian, there you are," Gavhaul's greeting draws you up. "What do you have there?"

Somewhat ruefully you recount the whole sequence of events, trying and failing to get into the watcher's head only to be left with a sketch and a mystery.

"An... interesting riddle to be sure," he seems for the moment caught between amusement and idle interest. "Give that here."

As you do so he frowns down at the parchment. "My guess would be the knight was looking for her. A shrine to Sivanah would be just the place for a woman of noble blood to make herself lost, though with Breolia mayhap she found more than she bargained with. Odd that the Eagle Knights are looking for her, they are not usually ones to chase after undutiful daughters or absconding wives. Perhaps they are doing so as a favor to someone of high standing. I doubt it has anything to do with us, we will be gone from the city in a few days regardless."

"But if someone were to find her, or news of where she might be...?" you ask the obvious question.

"That would likely be worth coin or favor with whoever is looking for her, the Eagle Knights certainly if one is not minded to wade into the swamp of whatever petty intrigue is afoot," he answers, amused again not annoyed in the least as one might have feared. "Thinking of testing your sight?" To judge from his tone the merchant seems to approve of ambition, or maybe he's just curious to see if you are the kind of person to take side-jobs.

Perhaps that would have been the last thought you gave the woman in the sketch of not for the what awaited you on your return to Portside that evening, Mina fuming at the absurd dismissal of Gorok's petition.

"'Chelish citizens,'" she fumes. "Did that... that bean counter think the iruxi pay taxes to the Imperial Treasury? That they send recruits to the Red Legions?"

For his part Gorok is quieter, but no less disappointed in what he had found, a poor showing compared to what he had been promised. Yet... the mention of 'sponsorship' among Mina's ranting does recall the parchment tucked in your belt pouch. Gavhaul's words from earlier come back to mind: 'a favor for someone of high standing'. Maybe that would be enough to get the Office of Land Management to reconsider. The five of you had been successful solving the problems of people with more gold than skill or courage back in Augustana.

Does Kori propose investigating Elanora DuVorge?

[] Yes, for money or favors it's sure to be worth it

[] No, it is not worth the trouble to wade into whatever intrigues are at the root of this

OOC: Eagle Knight Cadet, makes three DC 16 will saves in a row with a +2 Bonus. Also Eagle Knight Cadet, does not make the DC 10 Will save vs Fear not to drop things running away even though he has a +3 bonus for that. Dice are going to dice, what can you do?

Haha, I kinda feel sorry for that kid. We accidentally scared the crap out of him. That makes up for the fact he resisted three attempts to use Detect Thoughts on him in a row. Talk about good luck going hand in hand with bad.

A potential monetary reward would be nice, but I'm much more interested in getting a favor from someone in high enough standing to help Gorok and his people bypass the Andoran bureaucracy more quickly.

This should be easier than going around gathering favours

This was the funniest thing I didn't expect to read today.

We should do it more often. People watching from under invisibility sounds like a ton of fun.

And yes, totally taking the side-job.

Hope we can get Gorok and his people that sponsorship if we are successful.

Arc 7 Post 23: Catching Whispers
Catching Whispers

21st of Lamashan 4707 A.R. (Absalom Reckoning)

The smoke of Garundi tobacco mingles with that of locally sourced cable-weed and even what you are told is the far more potent flayleaf, hated by sobriety advocates as it is loved by the smugglers and pirates that run barrels of the stuff from Riddleport and beyond. In all those kinds of smoke, who is to notice of one particular wisp of it it darker or moves against the flow of air?

"He's going to get caught... they're going to notice." Mina whispers urgently, gripping the wooden goblet in front of her as though she's about to club someone over the head with it.

"People see what they expect to see," you counter as you watch profile of the 'brash young nobleman' who had appeared on one of the seats nearer the door in a show of illusory prowess. That last part may be true, but not as the patrons anticipated, the colorful visage festooned with scarves and handkerchiefs was designed to hide the lack of small sounds that accompany most people, which unlike the voice Sirim cannot provide from his hiding place among the rafters. "Especially when there are free drinks to be had."

"Sneaky snake," Cob agrees impressed. "If they try to stab him for silver, he's not there."

"That's not..." Mina cuts herself off. "Most people wouldn't want to talk to a spirit like he is."

"Why?" Cob scratches one ear.

"Those who see poorly in the dark come to fear it," Gorok answers. "It's as true of those that walk on two feet as four."

It takes a good seven hours, with a pause in the middle for the four of you to eat lunch while Sirim recalls his magic but in the end in a tavern in Mask's Row Sirim finds a fellow who knows more than common gossip about the DeVorges, since he used to be a valet for Eduarmot DeVorge, three times delegate to the People's Council. In among all the anecdotes about forgetting his cravat by the bedside of ladies of negotiable virtue, drinking to excess and sleeping though votes for important legislation emerges the figure of a 'politician' rather more adept than his rakish persona allows. "Oh, he'll wear spirits like a woman wears perfume, but he won't put anything stronger than Drumish Beer in his mouth. It's a show he puts on, man of the people out to fight for the little guy, and never mind that his family was all dukes and barons going back eight hundred years."

"How could one not know his heritage given the name, a mark of old imperial blood, yes?" Sirim asks, tipping the head of the figment in askance.

"Oh to be sure, but the Timber-folk, that's what we call them that live in Timberton, Eduarmot constituency love him for being able to 'curse the sods in their own mother-tongue', he knows which rules to break you see. Since he's a real blue blood he can embarrass those that put on airs from their great-grandpa having owned a lumber mill."

"I had thought Andorans had no love for hereditary nobility," the shade prodded, his present guise a perfect fit for purpose.

"Not when they take all those hoity toity airs seriously, but a fellow who tips his hand ruffles his collar turns his wrists just so to flip the bird from a pile of ivory lace cuffs, that we love, especially when it comes with a reputation for charity..." the former valet takes a big gulp of his beer. "Even when he can't afford it."

"Oh?" The figment leans in as though to listen closer.

"Ever since the People's revolt the DeVorges have been big spenders on charity, especially for navy and army veterans, but with Eduarmot all distracted up at the People's Palace and the run of bad trades he's had recently the family's been struggling for coin. There was talk of marrying his sister Elenora off, but now she's up and vanished, probably eloped with some Varisian wheelwright if you asked me Eduarmot's probably fucked. I ain't out here looking for a job because my last one weighed me down with silver, I can tell you that much."

Sirim Bluff: 1d20+12 = 16 (Success) -> Sirim Diplomacy: 1d20+12 = 17 (Failure)
Sirim Bluff: 1d20+12 = 32 (Success) -> Sirim Diplomacy: 1d20+12 = 27 (Full Success)

"Good thing we are looking for influence and not coin out of the fellow," you muse.

"If she is already pair-matched, would Edu-ar-mot still pay us?" Gorok's thinking one step ahead, looking to Mina for confirmation.

"Probably, just knowing she's safe should be worth something to him." She makes a face as she tries to work though the unfamiliar intrigues. "He got the Eagle Knights looking, his plans can't be too nefarious. Maybe he'll try to shame her into a marriage for the family's sake, but it's not like he can marry her off by force. The old Taldan law code was against it and I'm sure they kept that, not to mention how it would look to the public."

"So none of our concern, we just have to find her," you conclude. And hope she's not dead, you think but do not add aloud.

***

Later that evening, sketch in hand, you ponder the missing heiress as you turn the pendant between your fingers: "Where is she?"

Divination (DC 10): 65 (Success)

Again four verses show themselves, a riddle weaving its way between broken symbols, nonsense rhymes. No rivers here, no blades fallen, no judgement cast. Still alive, though for how long you could not guess.

Bloody veils pierced by sight
Of one who did not fear the night
And lost down well in darkness ringed
Upon her face still beats the wind

"Didn't you say the diabolist you spoke to yesterday is pretending to be a priestess of Sivanah?" Mina asks as she reads over the lines. "That fits the bloody veils, maybe she knows something?"

Mina Knowledge (Religion) DC 11: Automatic Pass

"Well I don't think she'd be inclined to tell me anything after I put my foot through her floor," you shake your head sheepishly.

"Who says we have to ask nicely?" Her answering smile would do Cob proud.

What do you do?

[] Try to question Breolia about Elenora's fate

[] Sneak into M. S. Laundry looking for clues as to Elenora's whereabouts
-[] Write in party composition

[] Inform the Eagle Knights of your suspicions

Going to the Eagle Knights probably wouldn't help much, since they already seem to suspect Breolia may be involved, and questioning her isn't likely to amount to anything but alerting her that she is a suspect, if she isn't already aware and prepared for such. We could try going directly to Eduarmot if we had more time in the city. We'll be gone in a few days, however, and I don't think we have good odds of getting in contact with him and making anything happen in that timeframe, not if he's as important as he seems. He probably gets all sorts of folks trying to inform him of his sister's whereabouts for a reward, whether they know anything or not.

I think we should go for the recon option. Our party is built for it, after all. Instead of sending in the whole crew, however, it should just be Cob and Sirim. They have the best Stealth abilities and between them they can cover all the bases; Cob can check for traps and manipulate physical objects, while Sirim checks for magic and hidden spaces. Sirim can also facilitate silent telepathic communication between himself and Cob, and the rest of the party if they're nearby.

[X] Sneak into M. S. Laundry looking for clues as to Elenora's whereabouts
-[X] Cob and Sirim will attempt to sneak into the building.
--[X] Before the pair move to infiltrate the laundry, Kori cast Invisibility and Protection from Evil spells on them.
--[X] Mina will prepare two Hermean Potential and Heroism spells so she can cast one on each of them (in place of Sleep and Dispel Magic).
--[X] Sirim will prepare an additional Invisibility spell in place of Mirror Image in case he and Cob need their spells refreshed before they are done in the laundry. He will also prepare Ghost Sound in place of Prestidigitation, in case he needs to use it to alert the rest of the party outside that he and Cob need assistance.

We get to loot the house after all!

For clues, of course. Cob is our best bet to get in and dig around the place, but he isn't that good at interpreting his findings. Also, at staying focused. Sirim sounds like the ideal companion.

I am unsure whether Kori needs to come with. His Searching Shadows could be useful, as well as Darkness-related spells if we find ourselves needing to retreat.
